2 out of 5 stars Textile design.......2007-05-13

This book has simple line drawing of Italian textiles but unfortunately there is no documentation to indicate the specifics of each primary source. I found it of limited usefulness as I am looking for where a source pattern came from, what year it was used (approximately), and ideally what the original material used was. For the price, it is fair if you are just looking for design ideas.

2 out of 5 stars nice drawings but no information.......2006-06-23

Aaccording to the back cover of this book this has "authentic designs" based on textiles of the Italian Renaissance. We will just have to take their word for it, because there is no information on what century, what type of textile each design is from, etc. These are an artist's reinterpretation of design motifs, so if you are looking for information on Italian Renaissance textiles (say, for costume research) look elsewhere. Try "Full-Color Historic Textile Designs" by M. Dupont-Auberville; while it does't have photos of extant textiles, it does provide information on where and when the original textile was produced, along with a larger scale drawing of the fabric design. If you can find a copy of "A Treasury of Great Italian Textiles", an older book by Antonino Santangelo, that would be even better, as it provides actual photos of extant textiles from the period.

3 out of 5 stars hard to get, but not bad.......2007-03-31

Considering the specialization of the subject, it is well done. I would have liked more emphasis on the history of velvet, though. However, I think it is a good addition to the fiber enthusiast's collection.

3 out of 5 stars If you love velvet..........2002-09-13

Lots of detail and some fascinating details.

4 out of 5 stars Fashions, furnishings and more.......2001-07-11

Lots of fun for the costume historian, and inspiring for any home sewer, this book shows velvets from about 1450 C.E. to the present and how they were used in fashion and interior decoration. There's also a nice section at the end on the techniques of weaving and dyeing. While the content is great, I do have some complaints about the quality of the book: the captions needed to be proofread, as there are a lot of misspellings and typos; and some of the color reproductions are just muddy enough that one cannot see clearly the details of the fashions. But I don't know of any other book like this one, so it gets my recommendation for costumers and fashion historians.

Had we but time enough ... and money, all of our creative dreams could be realized. Enter Artists & Writers Colonies, which contains detailed listings for some 200 opportunities that provide "the time, space, or money for you to work on creative projects that the conditions of your everyday life prevent you from completing." The listings include application requirements, provisos, facility descriptions, and historical information about the colonies. One residency program (the Anderson Center) is located at the former home of the man who discovered the process of puffing cereal grains; another (the Watershed Center) offers free brick clay to artists. While Nebraska's Art Farm requires 15 hours of labor a week from its residents, New York Mills requests that its residents share their creativity with the local, rural community. Sheds at the Norcroft writing retreat come equipped with thesauruses and rocking chairs; artists at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center work in "hay lofts, barns, and on outdoor patios."

When the author of the first edition of this book was unable to do a second, a group of hard-working interns jumped in. They did a fine and diligent revision, though one can't help wondering whether a more experienced editor would have gotten more out of the six writers and artists whose essays about their artist-colony experiences accompany the book's listings. Regardless, the book succeeds at its ultimate goal, which is to inform artists and writers about the opportunities available to them, so they can approach the colonies best suited to their needs. Still, say the authors, no matter how well you plan your creative immersion, "there will certainly be surprises." Not to worry: "the unexpected can be a source of inspiration." --Jane Steinberg

I was not very impressed by this book as it was more elementary than I expected. It is however, a great resource for artists that have little experience with composition. The book shows both good and poor composition examples and of a variety of subjects too.

This is a book about good composition. A good composition is not only stereotyped proportions or perspectives.
A good painting is the fruit of patient composition planning combined with painting skills.Improvisation can never get better results than carefull study and research.
This book will help the serious student to break through the composition barrier.
The author, in the preface ,recommends : "This book should be read, marked, learned and inwardly digested by re-reading."

5 out of 5 stars Writers and Artists Yearbook.......2002-05-26

I found the book invaluable. A friend of mine bought it for me for my birthday. I moved to Canada. Trying to negotiate the international book publishing market from Canada has been very difficult. When I was in England I just looked up the publishing agents or literary agents and off I went... into the post with my manuscript, but here, I find that things are so tricky over the internet and you can't look up information fast enough to get started. It can take all day and still you don't know if you have connected with a good agent. Writers and Artists Yearbook is a gold star in my book and always will be. I need my Writers and Artists Yearbook - but I left it in England. I miss it so much and need a new one. Please send me one to Canada soon...

This desktop reference contains hundreds of pages of information that writers and artists need for their professional work. The hints and tips are useful especially for newcomers or beginners.

Although the book provides details of U.S. agents and publishers, it doesn't cover other U.S. information that would have been useful, for example, literature festivals, prizes, etc. UK information is covered reasonably well. Recommended for artists and writers interested primarily in the British market.

4 out of 5 stars Only in the UK.......2001-05-25

This looks like it would be a very useful book -- if you live and work in England, Ireland, or elsewhere in the United Kingdom. It specifically does NOT include information pertinent to the United States.

For the UK and Ireland, it lists newspapers and magazines, book publishers and packagers, TV/film/radio resources, publishers of poetry and plays, literary agents, societies, prizes and festivals. It also has chapters on writers and the Internet, copyright and libel, finance for writers and artists, art and illustration, and photo and picture research.

It is a practical and well-organized guide. But ONLY for the UK.

4 out of 5 stars FINE YEARBOOK: WELL-VERSED AND VERY DYNAMIC.......2003-04-05

For those who already own the previous edition of this book, there is little here that should arouse your envy. However, for intending first-time buyers, there is a lot to gain by investing on this yearbook.
Its well-illustrated generous pages brim with assorted information. From writers to publishers, film makers to photographers, information is complete in this single-volume. They are well-presented too! The reasonable price-tag of this book ensured that it is affordable to anybody who may need it.
Regardless of its publication date, a typical "Writers' & Artists' Yearbook" takes the place of a mini-encyclopaedia. A good chunk of its information is timeless. Authors, journalists, historians, teachers, students, and many others would benefit from the authoritative information it provides. It is a capable reference, which should satisfy the quests of most versatile readers.

5 out of 5 stars Organized around the four Ps--Planning, Producing, Polishing, and Presenting.......2006-10-07

The planning section covers word clusters, venn diagrams, and outlines.

The producing section covers building paragraphs, dialogue, clarity, passive voice, headings, audience, citing sources, footnotes, generalizations, and an interesting "use of poet's tools" section. The poet's tools include metaphors, similes, imagery, onomatopoeia, alliteration, personification, and rhyming patterns. I especially appreciated the footnotes part of this section as it was very thorough and is usually not covered in pre-college style books. The end of the producing section covers writing plays and scripts, which was interesting to me.

The polishing section covers common grammar mistakes, punctuation, verb tenses, spelling mistakes, and word misuse. I found this section very well-done and thorough.

The presenting section covers uniform formatting, spacing, pagination, tables, headings, sections, and an extremely thorough coverage of bibliographies and citations.

This is one of the Scholastic writing guides, which are very concise, take up little shelf space, but are presented clearly and in an easy-to-read manner suitable for children and adults.

This arresting collection of photography features work by both Helmut Newton and his wife, actress Alice Springs. Newton's coolly elegant and sexy studies are splendidly counterbalanced by Springs's warmer and more vulnerable pieces. The book is divided into three sections: two "Us" sections, in which Newton and Springs alternately photograph themselves and each other, and a final "Them" chapter that features subjects photographed differently by each photographer. The cast is a glitzy mix of Riviera-style celebrities. Catherine Deneuve is especially sultry shot by Newton, dressed in a black negligee with a cigarette dangling from her lips just below her bedroom eyes, while in the facing portrait taken by Springs, her torso is concealed within a black turtleneck and she stares confidently and directly at the camera. Karl Lagerfeld is here before he went gray, and Gianni Versace is posed not quite languidly naked on a leopard-skin sofa. The self-portraits are revealing and occasionally disturbing. Springs is often in various states of undress in front of mirrors. Newton is most often with naked models, occasionally cross-dressed, and when he is naked is oddly wired up to various types of medical equipment such as EKG machines. Aside from a very brief introduction by Newton, there is no accompanying text in the book--not even captions--but this is a book of images, not words, and nearly all these fine photographs are worth at least a thousand of them. --Nick Wroe, Amazon.co.uk

5 out of 5 stars Great Visual Autobiography.......2006-03-16

This book is a great visual autobiography into Helmut's private life. There are different sections of the book where he does have photographs of selected celeberties but the main focus of the book are photogrpahs of Helmut and his wife. Very well done edition of some B&W images.

5 out of 5 stars Multidimensional Perspectives of Photography.......2001-03-21

This book has one of the most interesting premises of any photography book I have had the pleasure to examine. Spouses, Helmut Newton and Alice Springs, share their photographic perspectives of each other, themselves, and the same models. These different views echo around in your mind to help you understand the personalities, purposes, and methods of two interesting photographers. In the process, you get a better understanding of the photography itself . . . and how it changes the models in our perception. By providing images over many decades, you also get a time-lapse view of a relationship and the aging process.

Before going further, let me note that this volume contains many nude images of men and women that would be past the "R" rating if this book were a motion picture.

The book has a few brief comments by Helmut Newton to set the stage. "The book shows the work of two photographers . . . [who] have lived together for fifty years." " . . . [B]ut neither is usually present at the other's photographic sittings." " . . . [N]either one has in any way influenced the other's way of approaching their subjects." "I can see the truth and simplicity in the portraits of Alice Springs." "[She has] been an actress and a painter before she has taken up the camera seriously if somewhat sporadically." "As for myself, I recognize the manipulation and editorialising in my photographs."

Alice Springs looks for the core of the person, and captures the realities of daily life and aging very well. She shows you the joking and self-absorbed sides of Helmut Newton that help explain the stylized and challenging images that he is famous for producing. Helmut Newton obviously adds a gloss and a pose to everything, that gets his editorial position out. But it's fun in this context, much more so than in his other work. I found myself reevaluating his work after seeing these images by Alice Springs.

Here are my favorite images in the book by Alice Springs:

          Of Helmut Newton -- Spain 1956; Rue Aubriot, Paris 1971; Ritz, London 1976; With Sylvia, Ramatuelle 1981; Monte-Carlo, 1987; Hollywood 1988, 1991

Of Alice Springs -- Ramatuelle, France 1975; Vail, Colorado 1996

Princess Caroline and son, Monte-Carlo 1985; Karl Lagerfeld, Monte-Carlo 1983; Rudi Gernreich, Los Angeles 1985; Tina Chow, Beverly Hills 1986; Angelica Houston, Hollywood 1983; Antonio Lopez, Paris 1977

Here are my favorite images in the book by Helmut Newton:

Of Alice Springs -- June as Hedda Gabler, Melbourne 1960; In our kitchen, Rue Aubriot, Paris 1972; Hotel Volney, New York 1982; Rue Aubriot, Paris 1974; Ramatuelle 1976

Of Helmut Newton -- Photomation, Paris 1970s; With wife and model, 1981; Clinique St. Jean, Cagnes-sur-Mer, 1997

Birgit Nielsen, Monte-Carlo 1987; Gianni Versace, Lake Como, Italy 1994; Donatella Versace, Off coast of Antibes, 1990; David Hockney, Los Angeles 1988; Peter Beard, Paris 1996

After you see this remarkable book, I suggest that you have some fun with your family. Take a day, bring a camera for each person, and make photographs of each other and the same subjects. Do this once a year to develop a better sense of your perspectives and relationships. Then comment on each other's work, and create a scrapbook or album out of this sharing. You'll have a lot of fun looking back on these images in future years.

Take a good look . . . and see more!

Alice Springs -- in reality, June Newton -- emerges just fine from the shadow of her legendary husband Helmut.

Springs' portraits are simple and straightforward, never romantic or conceptual. A nice change from the photos we usually see of the well known celebrities presented here.

This is one of the great books of black and white portraits, and the photos are beautifully reproduced in the classic gravure process.

I'm so glad I bought this book. It's the perfect book to read while on the can.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-04-06

This is a great bathroom book! I have learned so much from my trips to the bathroom now. Everyone that comes over and has to use my bathroom now has to know where to find this book because they have to have it. It's great for all that "everything you ever needed to know but never thought about" kind of stuff.

                5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!!.......2007-04-02

Ive read this book front to back; I love facts.
It's a tad nerdy, but if you like to know things that are obscure that make great for awkward silence or everyday conversation starters, this book is for you.

We have a few of these series and really enjoy the reading while sitting in the bathroom. It is amazing what you can learn. I am very anxious to purchase the one on National Parks. Great series of reading.
