Book Description
A scathing and incisive critique of the contemporary art world, in an updated new edition.
This extensively illustrated book is a lacerating account of the new British art scene which emerged in the 1990s, its legacy in the 21st century, and what it tells us about the fate of high art in contemporary society. High Art Lite takes a critical look at the phenomenal success of YBA, young British artists obsessed with commerce, mass media and the cult of personalityDamien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Marcus Harvey, Sarah Lucas, among othersand questions whether their success is at the price of dumbing down and selling out. In a new chapter, Stallabrass explains how YBA lost its critical immunity and explores the ways in which the leading YBA figures have altered their work in recent years.
Customer Reviews:
Very Intelligent and Thorough Exploration of Recent UK Art.......2002-01-16
This is a (very) critical look at the art produced recently in the United Kingdom, particularly that of "young British artists", those artists made into stars in the 90s by collector Charles Saatchi. It is intelligently written, and explains well the historical background that led up to this type of art. Stallabrass is no fawning fan of these artists by any means, and has no time for accolades or flattery; he dissects the yBa phenomenon completely and leaves its bones for the culture vultures.
New British Art.......2000-12-18
This is the best and clearest text on the YBA [Young British Artists] phenonomenon of the 1990s - required reading for anyone who is interested in Damien Hirst, Jake and Dinos Chapman and their peers. A little spoilt by a certain Marxist rigidty of attitude but highly intelligent and frequently amusing as well.

From the supplier: Document design can be made more effective as a communication tool when all possible design elements are carefully planned prior to actual work on the project. Headings, examples, screen images, tables, bullets, headers and footers are some of the design elements that should be considered.

Customer Reviews:
Analysis is great.......2007-10-03
I like that he has a full page to show the drawing and on the facing page he has a smaller version with commentary. He places capital letters on the drawing so you can see exactly which line or shape he is discussing.
Definative.......2007-07-13
Robert Beverly Hale was one of the masters in teaching figure drawing. A must for serious students of figure painting.
Not written by an artist..........2007-05-08
Although this is one of the best compilation books of old master drawings
available on the common market, I would not put too much stock in what
the author says. The author is correct in saying that many of these
great artists had to learn and understand anatomy in order to "make it up"
(e.g., a figure of a rearing horse drawn by Titian, impossible to be
taken from life), but he goes overboard in trying to get the student to
learn about anatomy. For example, he says "Please buy some bones". That's right--the way to paint like Rubens is to...buy some bones. I don't think so. Even if you learned how to draw the figure well, after perhaps 10 years, you'd still have to tackle drapery and then learn how to compose your figures in a painting and, well, be an artist. I have learned after much figure drawing study that after a while, "studies are
useless" (Rubens said that also). It is better for the true artist to simply plan painting after painting, and ignore all this wasteful "study effort" as if art is a science. This is not to say any knowledge of anatomy is bad. But you need to know only as much as it takes to know that
a head looks too big, or a shoulder "doesn't look right", esp. if you are already working from life. I have studied anatomy and tried to draw from my memory, and although my drawings have all the attendant parts, you cannot "guess" at how the aspect of a vastus medialis changes when it is in 10 different positions. It's much easier and quicker simply to draw a model from life--it will look more correct, even WITHOUT a knowledge of anatomy. And if you are a figurative artist, you may even want to "clothe" your figures at some point (Watteau made a name for himself for knowing how to do just that) so knowledge of anatomy, although not to be entirely discounted, should run second to drawing from life, having artistic vision, and working on a plan to make a nice painting instead of engaging in hours of fruitless "studies." After you die, do you want to have a bunch of academic drawings with correct anatomy laying around?
Only the art matters. This book, although much better than those awful books which use hack artists as models of excellence, still falls short
of what you really need to do to become a strong figurative painter. And that is, "draw from life". Pose your friends and family and draw them.
That's what the masters did.
This is one of the best books ever!.......2007-01-25
This is a must have book. No matter what your subject matter you can benefit from reading and doing the exercises in this book. I read it with a highlighter and a pen. I don't usually write in my drawing books, but this one was too good to simply read I had to study it. I will be using this in my current class to help me draw people better. Lots of excellent examples. It doesn't matter what you are trying to learn to draw this book helps you think in terms of mass and shape, not legs, arms, faces, etc.
Must have book for all fine art students!.......2007-01-05
Robert Beverly Hale is the undisputed master of not only artistic anatomy, methods of drawing and the masters' techniques; but he is also a master at conveying ideas in clear concise language. He was the best lecturer on artistic anatomy. I attended his 10 session lectures twice before he died. The book reflects much of what he taught in his lectures, so it's the next best thing to having him in the room.

The Guide to Losing -- or Finding -- Your True Soul Mate
Did you know: Capricorns are cowards when it comes to public displays of affection? Aries get amorous in unusual places? Leos love to be serviced? Cosmo's Bedside Astrologer, Hazel Dixon-Cooper, reveals all this and more in this sexy, uninhibited guide to love and romance, the follow-up to her hip and hilarious Born on a Rotten Day. In Love on a Rotten Day, Dixon-Cooper walks the wild side of the zodiac, delivering the goods on which sign cheats and who's a manipulator, a bully, a brat, a nutcase, or a nympho. Lovers, would-be lovers, and ex-lovers will rejoice in advice on how to:
- Safely dump a Scorpio
- Convince a Virgo to have spontaneous sex
- Snag a romance-phobic Aquarius
An honest and uproarious guide to losing and finding your true soul mate, Love on a Rotten Day is this century's answer to the timeless query "What's your sign?"
Customer Reviews:
An entertaining book!.......2007-08-01
It has a funny way of explaining your love life with your sign with other signs. The book definately gets you thinking and like thats so true!!!
Another Attempt From Hazel Dixon-Cooper.......2007-04-25
I have never been impressed with her works, and I believe that Cosmo's Bedside Astrologer has greatly suffered since Hazel started writing it. This book is no different. She doesn't know what she's talking about and she relies on generalities and astrological stereotypes to fuel her books. Her humor is cliche and downgrading where it doesn't need to be. She needs to study her subject more and to conduct her own research.
I recommend reading Judith Bennett's Sex Signs: Every Woman's Astrological and Psychological Guide to Love, Health, Men and More!, Rowan Davis' Ex Files: A Zodiac Guide to His Former Flames(which you can buy now even though Amazon has its sale date May 1), Liz Greene's Astrology for Lovers or Bridgett Walther if you're interested in relationship astrology.
Good Insight.......2004-11-26
This is a very cute book, and actually does successfully illuminate points about the signs that you might not otherwise know. Additionally, the author includes Moon, Venus and Mars charts in the back, so you can quickly and easily locate what sign someone falls under. The delivery is very tongue-in-cheek and has a certain crassness to it; this isn't a book that sets out to impress more literary types. However, it does what it sets out to do - enlighten you to the love aspects of the signs. I would recommend this book with one MAJOR CAVEAT: this book is very repetitive of Born on a Rotten Day. I found that much of the information overlapped, and that this book was not a compliment for the first title. If you already own Born on a Rotten Day you won't be overly impressed by this new title and won't find anything new in it.
The Truth Is Out There.......2004-04-14
In the "Truth is Funnier Than Fiction" arena, Love On A Rotten Day hits the bulls eye of astrological love sign quirks. This book not only had me laughing until my sides ached, I realized that it was right-on as far as dating characteristics go. In looking back over my history, I recognized several traits that played a significant part in my own makeup and that of my dating partners. In retrospect and after reading this book, I was lucky to escape in one piece from some, past relationships.
This book is an apt sequel to Dixon-Cooper's Born On A Rotten day, and takes us one step further to the arena of love, a topic closer to our hearts. Great work, and I can't wait to see what's coming next.
just too funny--and right on.......2004-04-14
I loved her first book, Born on a Rotten Day, and this is just as funny and true. People laugh out loud when they realize that she has got them pegged, whether they like to admit it or not.
