Fun and beautiful!.......2000-06-17
i am hardly an expert in Hawaiiana, but this book seems exhaustive in its documentation of the Hawaiian shirt. It's hard to believe that so much "ordinary correspondance" still exists from 70 years ago. In addition, the book is just gorgeous. Hundreds of pictures of the most interesting shirts.

The history presented in this book is better than what you find in the Steele book, but again the dates presented in relation to the development of Hawaiian fashion are often way off. Collectors and others need a historically accurate book. Lets hope some historian out there is listening...
Complete, beautifully photographed and written........1998-07-29
In addition to its beauty, Schiffer's book is complete and historically accurate. This is a book you will read over and over again.

I agree with the other reviews so I won't duplicate that. The author really should've gotten his facts -- and spelling -- right before publishing. He had a great opportunity to put out a good and wanted product, but he blew it. I was thinking maybe it's better than nothing, but no, I'd rather have nothing. Thank goodness there are more things available now.
Pretty pictures; not terribly informative.......2002-02-19
I've been told Steele's take on history is somewhat spotty; I'm not an expert so I can't confirm or deny that. To be honest, I've never even read the text. But the photos are numerous and great; there are over 125 full shirts in full color, many of them full-page as well. That makes the book perfect as an painting resource, which is what I use it for. If you're a fabric designer, costumer or artist, or just dreaming of the islands in their jet-set days of Lana Turner and Elvis Presley, this book is a good resource.
Great pictures, bad historically.......1999-12-15
Apparently the author was a collector on the US mainland since he apparently did not do much historical research in Hawaii. The dates are usually off about ten years. Also from his book you'd think all Hawaii produced were rayon shirts when cottons, in Asian prints, have been most common!
Historically, this is terribly inaccurate.......1999-02-17
Unfortunately, many of the dates presented in this book are wrong, and this book has perpetuated several myths and inaccuracies with regard to the history and evolution of the Aloha shirt. I am a historian who does research on Hawaii, and am curator of the world's largest collection of Hawaiian apparel. It is sad to say that this book and others written by collectors have proven to be a real problem because whatever research Mr. Steele did, was not only incomplete but flawed. As the first book published on the topic of Hawaiian clothing, this book is often cited and the inaccuracies are accepted as correct when they are not.

Finally a historically accurate book on Hawaiian clothing!.......2000-03-12
It's about time that someone finally did real research into Hawaiian clothing, including the aloha shirt. This book is historically accurate. Much of what has previously been published is erroneous. What most of the world knows about Hawaiian clothing comes from the use of aloha shirts after WW2. While our beautiful environment stimulated the production of bold and beautiful textiles, these were used in more than just shirts. Arthur covers womens' wear as well, and presents hundreds of beautiful pictures along with an interesting to read description of the history and culture of Hawaii. Aloha attire is more complicated than many would understand. This book covers the clothing that has been produced in, and worn by people in Hawaii in the 19th and 20th century. Truly a wonderful book!

A WONDROUS CONFECTION OF TALENTS.......2006-06-06
This is a winning book on many counts. I suppose that it could be called "cute," if one is determined, but what's going on in this illustrated narrative has such resonance that TEKELDEN goes far more deeply than cute.
Dawnay is brilliant with the expressions, both bodily and facial, of these winning dogs. Also, his borrowings from master paintings are very well-selected and capture the spirit and style of each. Dawnay is truly a whiz at appropriating artistic styles--while evolving his own. Finally, the story-line is great: it perfectly mimics the high and low points of families with long (sometimes, impossibly long) histories.
When I read this, I couldn't stop: I was fascinated, impressed with Dawnay's multiple arts--and laughing at his wit.
This book would please almost anyone, but, for dog lovers and art lovers, it's an extraordinary treat.
Dachshund Dogma.......2006-03-31
This book is great for all dog lovers but is a MUST for dachshund people. I bought several copies to give as gifts to friends. Not only is the story charming but the illustrations are exceptional. I highly recommend it.
The Cutest Book Ever Written.......2006-02-22
Following the history of a sometimes distinguished, sometimes naughty, always well-dressed family of dachshunds through the centuries is always amusing, always delightful. I plan to buy copies for many occasions for dog (not necessarily dachshund) lovers of all ages.
