    Book Description

The Virgin of Guadalupe is known throughout Latin America-and indeed the world-as the patron saint of the downtrodden and oppressed. Since her miraculous apparition before the humble laborer Juan Diego in the countryside around Mexico City in the 16th century, millions have prayed to her and decorated their homes, churches, cars, and even their bodies with her saintly image.

In this vibrant and whimsically designed book, Marie-Pierre Colle brings together more than 125 color photographs revealing the many manifestations of the Virgin, from majestic oil paintings to brightly colored keychains. The passion and faith of the Virgin's followers provide ample inspiration for art of all varieties. Here is a shocking-pink neon altar by a contemporary artist, as well as sequined representations that brighten the banners celebrating the Virgin's Feast Day on December 12. Running alongside these images is the "Nican Mopohua," a famous poem written after her apparition. A beautiful counterpoint to the illustrations, it describes her encounter with Juan Diego and is featured in both Spanish and English. AUTHOR BIO: Marie-Pierre Colle, the daughter of a French father and a Mexican mother, was a great admirer of Mexican arts and crafts of every period. Her previous books include Vendome's Houses of Puebla and Latin American Artists in Their Studios.

            4 out of 5 stars Fascinating Read.......2002-10-29

This book is definitely worthwhile for anyone interested in hunting, conservation, or just American history. Roosevelt was an astute observer of animal habits and habitat. He was concerned with wildlife conservation long before it was popular. You get a real sense of what a hunting trip was like back in the late 1890s.

What's more, he's not a half-bad writer. Unlike all of the modern politicians who "write" books--but actually just give some notes to a ghost writer who then does all of the real writing--Teddy actually wrote this book himself.

5 out of 5 stars Outdoor Pastimes of and American Hunter.......1999-12-24

I have a copy of this original work, it is still as exciting now as when it was printed (1905). The chapter of wolf and coyote coursing alone is worth the price of the book. Read of the man who caught wolves and coyotes with his bare hands (ok he wore a glove). The hunts for sheep and goats in the Rocky Mts. as well as the chase of the deer in th badlands are all brought to life. Roosevelt was a keen sportsman and naturalist, he provides us a look at the American west at the turn of the century. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to know what hunting in the old west was like.

If you like puzzles, this would be a fun book if it weren't for one very big problem. However, it is plagued with editing mistakes that quite simply should have been caught prior to publication. Don't waste your money on this book, instead choose a puzzle collection that has been checked for mistakes, as this one should have been.

Pencil-packing puzzle fans with a taste for novelty will enjoy these uncommon word searches. In his latest brain-buster, puzzle pro James F. Minter offers such delights as tangle words — word searches in reverse, where each word must be filled in a straight line without crossing any black squares — and cube searches, in which words are hidden diagonally, horizontally, or vertically on all three sides of a cube-shaped diagram.

For those puzzle solvers who enjoy the Dell Pencil Puzzles magazine, this collection is for you. Although it does not state that these puzzles are collected from past issues of the Dell magazine, they are the same types of word puzzles with exactly the same names (Kriss Kross, Figgerits, Cryptoquizzes, Bowl-A-Score Challenger, Spellathon, etc.) that Dell puzzle solvers are familiar with.

This collection includes plenty of good-quality medium difficulty puzzles. One reason I gave this book only three stars is because it has no table of contents, so if you enjoy one particular type of puzzle over the others and want to tackle those first, you have to thumb through the entire book to find them. Another reason is that it is hard to justify the price when you can buy an almost identical collection as a Dell Vacation Special issue for half the price. So unless you simply can't get enough of these puzzles, or unless you want a more durable cover than the usual thin one that graces a magazine, I'd buy the magazine instead.

Baseball and board game collectors alike will be thrilled with this wonderful new book. Illustrated in full-color, it contains nearly every baseball board or table game produced from the 1860s to the 1960s. With the games reflecting the evolution of the National Pastime, this is a visual history of the game. Information about the games is included in accurate captions, and the context for the games in the history of the professional game is provided by the helpful text. There is a wealth of information for collectors, including tips on the dating of games and rating their condition. There is also a price guide to help the collector assess a fair value for the games. All in all this is an important new book for collectors and historians of the game. In a time when board games are giving way to the fast pace of computers, this is a delightful reminder of simpler times. Baseball Games is a very basic effort: the captions give minimal information, the pictures are just satisfactory, and there's no narrative to put the games in any context. And the price is outlandish !

5 out of 5 stars Great Coffee Table book.......2001-08-29

This is simply a picture book of a bunch of baseball games with some organization and text fill. The games are organized by century (18th & 19th), and by type (player-endorsed, non-endorsed, card, action and coin-operated). There's a bit of baseball history, but what you'll want this for is the attention to historical detail in the games themselves. There are hundreds of games photographed in a reasonable (if not exceptional) amount of detail; most of the text is just a description of what's in the pictures. Many versions of popular games are compared, with information on how to tell the versions apart, which will be invaluable if you're a collector. For some reason there's four pages on Cadaco, but neither APBA nor Strat-O-Matic get a look in, nor do more contemporary games from 3M or Sports Illustrated or Avalon Hill. Don't expect a forty-dollar art book with prose that'll entertain you into the night. The printing quality, photo quality, and text-quality are only so so. I'm still waiting for the book that compares how the different games are designed strategically and how they play. This one's aimed more at collectors.

"Dirt for breakfast, dirt for lunch and dirt for dinner! Dirt, dirt, dirt! And look--now there's even a hair in my dirt! The final insult--I can't stand it any longer! I hate being a worm!" It isn't easy being an earthworm, and when one little guy gets mad at a hair in his dinner, Father worm decides to tell him a story. What follows is an ecological fable that combines environmental lessons with the kind of off-the-wall humor that could only come from one man: Gary Larson. Fans of The Far Side have been waiting for Larson's latest work since January 1995 when the final Far Side strip appeared in newspapers around the world, and they won't be disappointed. Father worm tells the story of Harriet, a beautiful but stupid maiden who frolics through the forest enjoying the beauty of nature, but completely failing to understand it. The young earthworm learns that nature is not a cute and cuddly theme park designed for the entertainment of stupid humans, but a complex, fragile, and sometimes violent system where every creature plays a vital role, even the lowly worm.

Larson is never preachy, the text is hilarious, and his illustrations are filled with wonderful sight gags. It may look like a children's book, but there's enough here to keep the most sophisticated adult chuckling for hours. You might learn something, too. --Simon Leake

                      Book Description

Once upon a time in a place far away, lived a man named Gary Larson who used to draw cartoons. It was a cartoon that appeared for many years in daily newspapers and was loved by millions. (And was confusing to millions more.) But one day he stopped.

Gary went into hiding. He made a couple short films. He played his guitar. He threw sticks for his dogs. They threw some back.

Yet Gary was restless. He couldn't sleep nights. Something haunted him. (Besides Gramps.) Something that would return him to his roots in biology, drawing and dementia--a tale called There's a Hair in My Dirt! A Worm's Story.

It begins a few inches underground, when a young worm, during a typical family dinner, discovers there's a hair in his plate of dirt. He becomes rather upset, not just about his tainted meal but about his entire miserable, wormy life. This, in turn, spurs his father to tell him a story--a story to inspire the children of invertebrates everywhere.

And so Father Worm describes the saga of a fair young maiden and her adventuresome stroll through her favorite forest, a perambulator's paradise. It is a journey filled with mystery and magic. Or so she thinks.

Which is all we'll say for now.
What exactly does the maiden encounter?
Does Son Worm learn a lesson?
More important, does he eat his plate of fresh dirt?

Well, you'll have to read to find out, but let's just say the answers are right under your feet.

Written and illustrated in a children's storybook style, There's a Hair in My Dirt! A Worm's Story is a twisted take on the difference between our idealized view of Nature and the sometimes cold, hard reality of life for the birds and the bees and the worms (not to mention our own species).

Told with his trademark off-kilter humor, this first original non--Far Side book is the unique work of a comic master.

Now Larson can finally sleep at night. Question is, will you?

4 out of 5 stars More of the same from Larson (thank goodness!).......2007-09-02

This parody of a children's story features a worm family, a young maiden and Gary Larson's twisted sense of humor and love of science. The illustrations are great, filled with little "Far Side" scenes as well as a larger storyline. If you are a fan of "Far Side" you know that Larson is a master of one panel, one-liner jokes. He can also use his twisted sense of humor and love of science in a larger, ongoing plot as well.

Be prepared - this is a quick read. It took me about 15 minutes. Also, it looks like a little kid's book (K-3), but it is not. There are language and thematic issues that you should be aware of before handing it to your first-grader. On the other hand, your middle schooler will love it!

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but probably not intended for younger kids.......2007-05-24

I enjoyed reading the book, in particular the small humorous details scattered throughout (ie: the eagle carrying the poodle to the nest, Harriet stepping on the ants she just praised) that gave me flashes back to both Larson's Far Side cartoons and the small Sergio Aragones cartoons sprinled in the margins of old MAD magazines.

I had intended to read it to my kids (aged 7 & under), but I think the ending is a bit too creepy for those ages. (But I do think it's a perfectly fitting ending).

4 out of 5 stars Good but too short - where's the follow up, Gary?.......2007-02-07

It's really about all the misconceptions we have about nature and the environment and (eventually) how we are interconnected with both the problem and the solution. If you take the time to read all the little notes on each page (and you should) you will be tickled. For education, I'd only rate it 2 stars, but for (what has been coined) "edutainment" I give it four stars. Would've given it five but its way too short.

5 out of 5 stars The funniest book ever!.......2006-08-24

I first purchased this book at the museum of natural history in DC. It has been circulated to all of my friends and family and somewhere it "suspiciously" got lost. It is one of the best Gary Larson books I've read and I would recommend it to anyone over 10 years old.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for a sermon!.......2006-08-03

Yes, this book has already made it into one Sunday Sermon, I was there! That is how I found out about this great book and realized it was not just for kids. What a moral lesson. See you real soon!
