5 out of 5 stars Flashman and the Charge of the Light Brigade.......2006-12-18

In this fourth packet of the Flashman Papers, our man Flash finds himself in the thick of the Crimean War, including the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava. Flash endures the regettable Lord Haw-Haw, the Earl of Cardigan, who led the Charge (although Lord Raglan deserves at least some of the blame for that fiasco). The reader is introduced to William Howard Russell, the famous Times of London who invented modern war reporting (the generals didn't like having a reporter around then either).

Harry also spends some not altogether unpleasant time in captivity in Russia - although a near encounter with the Russian knout leaves him with severe dyspepsia. Later Flash escapes, but ends up in in a Russian dungeon with Central Asian chieftain Yakub Beg and the warrior Izzat Kutebar. Rescued by Beg's people, Flashy shows some shocking signs of acting entirely honorably and contrary to his self-interest, but his odd behavior is soon explained.

If you are unfamiliar with the Flashman series, each book is a packet from the supposedly historical Flashman Papers. Flashman is a character of fictional history twice over, first in 'Tom Brown's Schooldays' published in 1857 and now in the George MacDonald Fraser's rediscovery. Fraser makes Flashman not only a cad, but also a reluctant and serial war hero. If you ever start to think Flashman has turned over a new leaf, just keep reading. If this kind of thing interests you I do suggest that you start with the first book in the series, 'Flashman', although each book stands on its own.

The Flashman series weave historical detail together with spell-binding stories told with frequent hilarity. Highly recommended for fans of British historical fiction or a good ribald tale of any kind.

Frazer keeps his series alive with yet one more finely written installment in the Flashman series.

Our Flash Harry is a rotten sort of fellow, but amicably so. Keep him out of harm's way, give him some undeserved glory, warm him with a bottle and a trollop, and he's happy. But in this episode, he meets someone far more rotten, the chilling Count Nicholas Ignatieff in chilly Russia, where Flashman is held after being captured during the Charge of the Light Brigade. Ignatieff is merely the nastiest aspect of a nasty land. Even Flashman, appalled by serfdom's cruelty, sees no difference between it and slavery.

Flashy maneuvers to avoid service during the Crimean War, but has the misfortune to be assigned as mentor to Queen Victoria's German cousin who can't wait to go to the front. Flashman somehow stumbles into three major actions on the same day. After capture, he is held in genteel captivity by a medieval Cossack lord who alternately fascinates and repels Flashy - and who details Flashman to impregnate his married-to-a-weakling daughter. He escapes during a serf rising in a thrilling nighttime sleigh ride, accompanied by his lover clad in nothing but furs, and the priggish Scud East, a fellow officer, prisoner and former classmate obsessed with notions of duty. Flashman is recaptured and watches in horror as Ignatieff has a random prisoner beaten to death with the horrifying knout, merely to intimidate Flashman. After being hauled off to Central Asia in chains to aid in Russia's planned invasion of India, he busts out with local rebels who draft him into yet one more life-risking but glory-generating escapade. He meets another notable babe, the Asian rebels' half-Chinese princess known only as Ko Dali's daughter, a chilling manipulator whose seduction has a deeper motivation.

G. M. Fraser's Harry Flashman is a brilliant vehicle for examining Victorian social mores and military history. For the uninitiated, let me explain that Flashman, a rake, craven soldier, and toad-eater, survives and prospers-not without difficulties, mind you-while innocents and idealists are stomped beneath the boot of history.

This is my fourth Flashman novel. While the others-FLASHMAN, ROYAL FLASH, and FLASH FOR FREEDOM!-were exceptional, FLASHMAN AT THE CHARGE offers, word for word, more of Fraser's amazing action writing. YOU ARE THERE at the Battle of Balaclava (the Crimean War for you Yanks) as a petrified Flash holds his ground behind the Thin Red Line and participates reluctantly in Scarlett's Charge and the Charge of the Light Brigade. There are also sensational action sequences as Flash, a prisoner of war, escapes from Russia and supervises the bombardment in the bloody battle at Fort Raim. These spellbinding action sequences go on for thousands of words and their emotional power, in my opinion, exceeds that of any adventure movie.

This time, Flash is in mid-career and is an experienced man of the world. Occasionally, this Flash, a realist with a poetic bent, speaks completely in character and provides wonderful descriptions and insights. These are another great pleasure in this terrific novel. Here, for example, is Flash describing the Russian landscape (page 121 of my Plume edition):

"I've seen big countries before-the American plains on the old wagon-trails west of St. Louis, with the whispering grasses waving away and away to the very edge of the world, or the Saskatchewan prairies in grasshopper time, dun and empty under the biggest sky on earth. But Russia is bigger: there is no sky, only empty space overhead and no horizon, only a distant haze and endless miles of sun-scorched rank grass and emptiness. The few miserable hamlets, each with its rickety church, only seemed to emphasize the loneliness of that huge plain, imprisoning by its very emptiness...It appalled me as we rolled along."

5 out of 5 stars Russian Flash.......2005-08-31

The most surprising thing about this installment of adventures of Harry Flashman (most famous officer, gentleman (well, quite doubtfully) and hero (well, not exactly) of Victorian England) set in Russia, that it is not even popular there, it is absolutely unknown. The Crimean War, together with serfdom, is quite an embarrassment for the Russians and George MacDonald Fraser spares none of his literary talents describing the 'beauty' and 'excitement' of Russian life in the middle of 19 century. Well, Flashman definitely enjoys certain aspects of it (you can easily imagine which ones). What catapults him into the Land of Tsars was, first of all, the Crimean War (which he skillfully tried to avoid but as usual getting himself into the pickle) and, as it happened, an unfortunate Charge of the Light Brigade, where he earns hard a status of a POW through his yet again outstanding cowardice. His life on the estate in a beautifully described southern rural Russia (or Ukraine to be precise) turns into yet another amorous affair with a beautiful daughter of a Cossack noble (with another surprise there too, mind you). Such fabulous captivity is abruptly interrupted by this foul Russian institution -serfdom- which catapults him into another adventure now in Central Asia (which was fighting not to be Russian at that time) where Flashy meets East again with more shocks and surprises for a reader (and Flashman). Prepare yourself for a Russian steambath, eavesdrop on the enemy's secrets after a passionate date and think how to make your sled lighter when you are on the run with a beauty because the chase is on and Cossacks are on the way!

5 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant.......2005-07-20

George MacDonald Fraser is simply brilliant - the Flashman Papers are part historical fiction, part bodice ripper, part humour. The intrepid Harry Flashman, a "hero" by all accounts is in his own words, a coward, a cheat, a liar and a womanizer. In spite of this, he continues to receive accolades, praise and a chest full of military decorations and titles.

In _Flashman at the Charge_, Flashman (in an attempt to avoid active service), ends up in the Crimea where first he joins "the thin, red line" in preventing the advance of the Russians, before rushing over to lead (farting all the way, incidentally), the charge of the light brigade.

Captured by the Russians, Flashman learns much about serfdom, Cossacks, "the Russian soul" - and of course, their attempts to invade India.

For all the show of cowardice, however, Fraser may be having a joke on us - that is to say, perhaps Flashy isn't the yellow-belly he would have us believe ... after all, the only difference between a "hero" and a "coward" is timing... and no one can doubt that Flashman has had an excellent sense of that.

Back to the days of the Crimean War and the Steppes of Russia; savage hordes to the right of him, beautiful females to the left of him. Historically accurate, and meticulously researched even to the tiniest detail. From the lay of the land to a description of the uniforms worn by various regiments of various armies, to the weapons and ordnance available to each; from the subtle nuances inherent in the languages he encounters, to the slang routinely used by Englishmen; it is clear that Mr. Fraser has a unique and thorough understanding of England and the British Empire in the nineteenth century. The reader gets the sense that he is in the hands of a master; there is nothing here which strains credibility. In short, the Flashman novels provide everything the lover historical fiction dreams of: exciting and historically accurate plots, careful attention to detail, a thorough knowledge of the subject matter, and, perhaps most importantly, a witty and delightful guide to show us the way.

                    Book Description

For more than thirty years, the case has remained stone cold -- the brutal murder of a local Papago girl, her butchered body found stuffed into a large cooler that was left on the side of Highway 86. No one ever paid for the horrific crime ... except, that is, the victim's loved ones, who suffer to this day.

Brandon Walker, once the sheriff of Pima County, Arizona, no longer feels he has purpose. A reluctant retiree living in the long shadow of his wife, Diana Ladd, a successful author of true-crime books, he is bored with golf, and more so with life. Salvation, though, comes with an invitation to join the ranks of The Last Chance, an exclusive nationwide fraternity of former cops and forensic experts who look into unsolved murders that have baffled local law enforcement agencies. And one such case is staring Brandon in the face with cold, dead, entreating eyes -- a murder investigation that may have been mishandled by his department when he was a young lawman.

The trail of a sadistic, calculating, and blood-chillinglyefficient killer soon leads Brandon into a strange world at the unlikely border between forensic science and tribal mysticism: a place where evil hides behind a perfect facade. Now the seeds of terror sown three decades earlier have bloomed and are bearing awful fruit. A forgotten homicide in the Arizona desert is only the beginning of the nightmare that is about to ensnare a diligent ex-cop and his family, for Brandon Walker is the only one still alive who can unravel a blood knot of terror and obsession that will free a dark truth more frightening than he ever imagined.

A novel that bristles with electrifying intensity and is alive with the breathtaking atmosphere and rich characterizations that have become J. A. Jance trademarks, Day of the Dead is a gripping and extraordinary journey into the darkness -- a welcome return to the shadow world of the sensational New York Times bestseller Kiss of the Bees -- and the author's most spellbinding and powerfully resonant thriller to date.

                    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-09-07

I am a huge fan of the Joanna Brady and J. P. Beaumont series, so I was looking forward to curling up with this book. I never read the first two of the Walker series but I was sure I was going to like this one. My goodness! What a horror! The description of the torture perpetrated on the orphan was so disgusting that I had to leave the book alone. I never went back to it. I like to read for pleasure and this was no pleasure. I will only read the Brady and Beaumont series from now on unless they get very gory.

Day of the dead was an entertaining crime novel. I didn't care for any of the characters very much. It is a B mystery.

3 out of 5 stars Caution: Too Scary for Joanna Brady Fans!.......2005-10-08

This series is several shades darker than Jance's Joanna Brady and J.P. Beaumont books, so if you're a fan of those books, just be warned that this series is different. I chose this book because I was attracted to the Native American spiritual themes and because I liked those other series. For me it was a mistake--I was looking for some light vacation reading, but this story was so creepy that it cast a pall over my whole vacation. Maybe I should have known better, but it's hard to tell from the cover blurbs--all mysteries seem to try to make themselves sound scary!

Unlike some other reviewers, I thought the parts about Indian family life and spirituality were the best parts. The ending was disappointing--too much shoot-'em-up, too many bodies dropping too fast. It would have been more satisfying, and less trite, to me to see the evildoers--especially when they're as evil as this--exposed to the community and brought to justice.

This is the story of Brandon Walker who is a retired Sheriff in Arizona. He gets a letter from another retired police officer telling him about a group of retired police officer who work on cold cases & ask him if he wants to join. He saids yes. Then he takes on a case that happened in 1970. It was the murder of a young indian girl that no one bothered with. What he finds is a serial killer who in 2002 is still killing.

Take mobsters and tommy guns. Add demons, monsters, and a small-time fixer with a very interesting curse. Shake well, season with a femme fatale, and voila, you have The Damned: Three Days Dead. It's hard-boiled with spiky bits, and a great deal of fun. If you like noir with a little bit of a twist, you're enjoy the hell out of this.

5 out of 5 stars Damned good read!.......2007-09-12

Crime, greed, murder, the living dead. What's not to love about this new comic by Cullen Bunn? When the late mobster, Eddie, is dug out of his grave to find a missing bookkeeper, he is forced to continue his work as a gangster against his will in order to release the curse keeping him alive. This is a fast-paced, action-packed read you're sure to enjoy.

                      Book Description

Based on the stories by Lucy Maude Montgomery, the Story Girl series tells the ongoing story of Sara Stanley, a young girl who earns the name of the Story Girl. The Story Girl keeps her cousins and friends spellbound with her tales, and a strong Christian message is woven throughout. In Winds of Change, everything seems to be happening at once to the King cousins. After Miss Reade and the Awkward Man’s wedding, Bev and Felix receive a startling letter—their father is coming back to them soon, but he is also bringing with him a woman he met in South America, whom he plans to marry. To add to the changes, the Story Girl receives a surprise of her own when her father comes back from Paris. As their time together on Golden Road grows short, the King cousins and their friends must make the most of their time together, before it runs out.

In another attempt to continue making money off of the amazing Lucy Montgomery - her estate (or editors) have decided to split the books "The Story Girl" and "The Golden Road" in to 4 or 5 separate books - or they have watered down the actual content. No doubt charging full price for all 5 books. The original stories are wonderful and beautifully written. Mrs. Montgomery herself, indicated that these books were closest to her heart. So, in order to read the stories in the correct chronological order and save yourself some money - just buy the two previously mentioned novels and enjoy!!

these series of books are excerpts from lmm book "the story girl". it is a misnomer to say "for girls only" as it is a group of friends with their stories to tell. my 10 year old son enjoyed the read, but, sadly, because the title has "girl" in it, it is not well recieved by boys!, even tho a boy actually recounts many of the stories! so, go ahead, young and old, girls AND boys- read this series and enjoy! :)

Sometimes a writer has to revisit the classics, and here we find that "gonzo journalism"--gutsy first-person accounts wherein the author is part of the story--didn't originate with Hunter S. Thompson or Tom Wolfe. Aldous Huxley took some mescaline and wrote about it some 10 or 12 years earlier than those others. The book he came up with is part bemused essay and part mystical treatise--"suchness" is everywhere to be found while under the influence. This is a good example of essay writing, journal keeping, and the value of controversy--always--in one's work.

                                    Book Description

Two classic complete books -- The Doors of Perception (originally published in 1954) and Heaven and Hell (originally published in 1956) -- in which Aldous Huxley, author of the bestselling Brave New World, explores, as only he can, the mind's remote frontiers and the unmapped areas of human consciousness. These two astounding essays are among the most profound studies of the effects of mind-expanding drugs written in the twentieth century. These two books became essential for the counterculture during the 1960s and influenced a generation's perception of life.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Purple Haze..........2007-07-26

I have wanted to read Huxley's THE DOORS OF PERCEPTION for quite some time and purchased it from Amazon about a year ago. However, I didn't get around to reading it until this past week, when it made its way to the top of my book stack. Not knowing if I was "ready" for the subject of hallucinogen use, I opened the thin volume and it hooked me immediately.

What was most impressive to me - others have described Huxley's clinical/intellectual approach to the drug experience - was how this work delicately projected the difference of drugs being used to escape TO something, rather than FROM something. This seems key to Huxley's "experience" versus other's entertainment, excitement, boredom, or addictive purpose for experimenting.

The second book of this thin volume, HEAVEN AND HELL, was, I'm quite sure, directly impacted by Huxley's previous drug experiences, as he argues, somewhat circularly, that drug use inspires appreciation of things produced via drug use.

I enjoyed both of these short works, presumably published together because of the William Blake connection in their titles. Despite reviews to the contrary, the ideas presented within seemed entirely accessible, if somewhat dated.

5 out of 5 stars A gifted writer sheds light on a difficult subject.......2007-06-16

                                    The Doors of Perception

This book is written in the form of an essay and recounts the experiences of the author after taking mescalin for the first time. It is a fairly short read, about 80 pages, but the philosophical reflections require time to fully grasp. Huxley volunteers to be the guinea pig in a controlled experiment to observe the effects of mescalin. The resulting experience gave cause for Huxley to reflect deeply on the nature of reality and how humans shape this reality through perception. What is perceived in one state of consciousness as real can indeed become something altogether different in another. Huxley explores this intertwined relationship and places it in a larger historical context recalling the works and deeds of the visionaries and mystics of the past.

This work is a must for anyone interested in boundless possibilities that arise from hallucinogenic substances. The fact that Huxley is a very intelligent scholar as well as a gifted writer allow him to tackle a difficult subject and tell it in words that lend themselves to the initiated. Those interested in the remote frontiers and the unmapped areas of human consciousness would do well to read this.

*Side note: The band the Doors took their name from the book. The title of the book actually refers to a line in the poem The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, written by William Blake in 1793. "If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite."

                                    Heaven and Hell

Another rather short essay (about 100 p.) from Huxley in the vain of The Doors of Perception. In it Huxley takes on the fast unknowns of Mind at Large, examining the basic properties and functions of visionary experience. This essay is basically a philosophical discourse on the possibilities that exist for visionary experience. The contrast between the positive and negative experience are characterized in the contrasting realms of Heaven and Hell. What makes this an incredibly interesting read is that all arguments made are based on plausible grounds and quite often on scientifically sound grounds. Although written over a half century ago, this work has proved a classic that stands out in a field that is still insufficiently investigated. Together with The Doors of Perception, Heaven and Hell shows that Huxley is as much a force in the world of nonfiction thought as he is in fiction. Read what this man has to say and think about it. There is a lot there to digest.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Not easy.......2007-05-12

I had an idea to find out about the use of drugs and its effect on the consiousness. I have found Aldous Huxley on the Wikipedia and bought this book. I am not native english, and it took me quite long to get through the book, because its language is so difficult to understand. It is obvious that Huxley is a writer with a very broad range of vocabulary to express things. If you are not native, prepare yourself with a huge dictionary to read the book However the contect was fabulous.

3 out of 5 stars Aldous Huxley and mescaline.......2007-02-15

Huxley is a very erudite individual, and hallucinogenics were novel for the time (1950's). What we can say now is that even well educated and intelligent individuals are not very far from psychotic thinking.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for anyone intersted in the psychedelic movement.......2006-12-27

Huxley reveals his thoughts on psychedelics and philosophy in "The Doors of Perception"--all while experimenting with mescaline. This book is not for the uneducated and brain-dead stoner, though. Huxley, an accomplished novelist ("Brave New World" and "The Island"), was the father of the psychedelic movement. He laid the foundation for philosophical experimentation and had an enormous influnce on later advocates like Timothy Leary, Ken Kesy, and (more recently) Daniel Pinchbeck. Those who are fans of "The Doors" will be interested to know that this is where the band recieved its name. The reading can be arduous at times but well worth the effort for anyone who is researching psychotropic drugs.
