Art critic Jed Perl has a theory about the state of the contemporary art scene. He believes that the art world--which he defines as an ideal community of dealers, collectors, curators, and viewers who support artists over the long term, regardless of market or other forces--is on the verge of extinction. Primarily he blames the art-market publicity machine and the complicity of major magazine editors and crowd-hungry museum directors. Together, they overhype already-successful artists like Cindy Sherman and Julian Schnabel to the detriment of the "different, unglamorous, half-buried scene" composed of emerging artists and denizens whose work has consistently evolved over the course of long, quiet careers. Eyewitness is a collection of Perl's essays, written over the last decade or so, in which he single-mindedly pursues his definition of a healthy art world and the perils that threaten its existence. His writing on wide-ranging subjects such as the 1995 Whitney Biennial, the audio component of Bruce Nauman's sculpture, the building of L.A.'s Getty Center, and a 1997 exhibition of Braque's mid-century masterpieces is filled with predictions about the trajectory of the art world, many of them dire, some of them worthy of serious consideration. Readers will likely react strongly to Perl's occasional rants, but what cannot be refuted is that, as art critic for the New Republic, he is extremely knowledgeable about his topic. He writes simply and accessibly and suggests interesting ideas for consideration. Eyewitness is a relevant read for anyone connected to the art world, including even the occasional museum visitor or gallerygoer. --Jordana Moskowitz

Book Description

A provocative look at the contemporary art scene by one of the country's leading art critics

As art critic for The New Republic, Jed Perl is renowned for combining a passion for art and a skepticism about the current art establishment with an ability to write about art in the context of our larger culture. In this collection of essays, including two written especially for this book, he delivers a brilliant mixture of first-rate art criticism and politically informed insight into the true workings of the American art world.

Perl offers incisive analysis into the marketing mentality that dominates today's museums, the poverty of academic criticism, and the changing expectations of the gallery-going public. He re-evaluates the old masters, and turns an avid, unprejudiced eye on the works of his contemporaries. He laments the collapse of a gallery culture that once allowed artists to develop slowly, and argues for a radical reassessment of the way art is presented to-and is viewed by-the public.

1 out of 5 stars Perl is a Post-Modernism Hater.......2004-02-13

If you hate everything that has happened in the popular art world since the day you were born, you will love this book. Perl has the cliche conservative's idealized vision of an art world that never existed, and he is trying to drag us back to it. He provides no more insight than every other reactionary critic longing for what art used to be. The author is the same kind of person who wanted to jail Manet for Olympia. He blames commercialism's influence for moving art away from what he wants it to be. Sorry, Jed, art would have moved on anyway.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent survey of contemporary art & the art world........2000-07-03

Eyewitness deserves ongoing mention as an excellent survey of contemporary art and the evolution of an art world in crisis. Almost thirty essays examine this modern art world and the place of contemporary artists within it, lamenting the collapse of an instructional system which allowed for artistic evolution and examining how art career have changed.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended reading for art lovers and professionals........2000-04-04

Over twenty essays provides the thoughts of contemporary artists who reflect upon trends in the art world. Eyewitness charts the collapse of institutions and traditions and their replacement with new systems in the art world; showing how the influences of major institutions have affected the content and display of art around the world. Insights on a market-dominated art world are particularly well done and revealing.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book by a Great Iconoclast.......2000-02-21

I hadn't read much of Jed Perl's previous work when I picked up a copy of this book. I was amazed at the acuity of Perl's criticisms. I did not agree with his assessment of each individual artist, but I thought his general philosophy of viewing art was right on, and should be required reading in high schools across the land. I note that much if not all of this book was written before the SENSATION fiasco in New York; Perl certainly saw it coming.

A truly magnificent book.

    Product Description

For those who "still crave the thrilling experiences that only art can offer," New Republic art critic Jed Perl brings to this collection of twenty-six essays his uncompromising critical engagement with the contemporary art world. Perl presents bold, amost novelistic explorations of contemporary artistsincluding Balthus, Jasper Johns, Bruce Nauman and Joan Snyderwithin the braoder context of a lively discussion of museum and gallery goings-on. Anointing the '90s "The Age of the Deal Makers," Perl laments the collapse of a system that once enabled artistsand especially painters and sculptorsto develop slowly over time. Sparing no one in his examination of the way our culture looks at art, Perl investigates how those charged with the responsibility of fostering artists' careers have deferred matters of taste and quality to the marketplacewith disastrous results. Eyewitness offers a generous survey of the last decade of museum and gallery going, paying particular attention to the cultural context in which art is made, exhibited and discussed. Perl focuses on developments at institutions such as the Guggenheim Museum and the Getty Center in Los Angeles and shows how hype and context have conspired to exlipse tradtion and content. He details the artists and exhibitions that have thrived in the current market-dominated art world, as well as the deserving work which has received far too little attention. Eyewitness is the product of a rare critical mind. Jed Perl offers both a passionate engagement with art and a critical assessment of its social context. This book, and its stirring belief in the power of art, will inspire a new understanding of how we look at art and what that says about our culture.

      Book Description

Otto Pächt's studies of the Early Netherlandish painters are the fruit of a lifetime's research. Following his book on the brothers Van Eyck and their circle, this volume deals with the next generation of artists, the great figures of the 15th and early 16th century: Rogier van der Weyden, Petrus Christus, Aelbert van Ouwater, Dieric Bouts, Justus van Gent, Hugo van der Goes, Geertgen tot Sint Jans, Hans Memling and Gerard David. In the tradition of the Vienna School, Pächt's approach put emphasis on formal analysis and on direct contact with the works of art themselves. Taking certain key works by each artist as examples, he discusses every facet of the work including style, mood, iconography, symbolism and construction of space. The chapters are linked by the theme of imitation and continuation: the author compares the same subject as treated by various artists and shows how artists adopted developed ideas and motifs first employed by their predecessors. Although his touchstone was the evidence of his eyes, Pächt was always responsive to the theories of other scholars, and this volume is a gateway to an influential period in the history of art. The proximity of the illustrations to the text enhances his account of the great figures of the period, and there is a folding plate, in colour, of Rogier van de Weyden's Last Judgement alterpiece for the chapel of the hospital, the Hôtel-Dieu, in Beaume.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT FLEMISH ART INFO.......2001-06-28

Unlike just a few years ago, today there are many books about Netherlandish and Flemish art of all periods. "From Rogier van Der Weyden to Gerard David" is a beautiful book filled with excellent color and b/w illustrations of the works being discussed. The authors are experts who give adequate details about the artist and his immediate circle, as well as the wider European influence on him and even the artist's effect upon the art world at that time and afterward. While the style is sedate and professional, it's never stodgy or overly academic, the authors being quite good at balancing the two. There are few gaps or unincluded details or individuals, so I can heartily recommend this for anyone who already loves Flemish art or those who want to learn more and to see clear, sharp reproductions of these incredible artists' work.

I LOVED this book. it was great. all of the Melanie Martin books are great. In this one she goes with her parents to Spain. her dad has business in Spain to do so her mom used frequent flyer miles to have the whole family go with him. In Spain Melanie's mom meets up with her old boyfriend Antonio. When there. melanie falls for Antonio's son Miguel. In this book many adventures come in with love between Melanie and Miguel. Also surprisling Matt the Brat helps out to keep Melanie and Miguel alone or gives Melanie tips, like when Miguel's cousin comes and Melanie thought it was Miguel's girlfriend. I bought this book from amazon.com and read it the day it came. It's so sweet to see Melanie in love! Stocked with bullfights, fireworks and of course, ROMANCE, this book rocks! It's almost like being in Europe yourself! This book is a must-read!

5 out of 5 stars Go On A European Adventure With Melanie Martin.......2005-06-21

The Martin family band together for a two-week Spring break vacation as seen through the eyes of 11-year-old Melanie. Readers join Melanie through the pain and confusion of first love as she fills her senses with the compelling Spanish landscape. This is an amusing linguistic travel adventure written in diary format. Because the author phonetically spells the Spanish words Melanie learns, I found myself saying some of the words aloud and learning quite a few things along the way. An appendix of all the foreign words Ms. Weston used would have been an added benefit to the book. With Love From Spain, Melanie Martin will make you want to take your kids on a European adventure of your own, no matter where you live in the world! The potential for this book is it's "that's me" value for Tweeners making the transition beyond being big kids.

                        5 out of 5 stars "Oh-lay "and a whole lot more!.......2005-04-27

Carol Weston has proven once again that she can entertain and educate at the same time. Her latest children's book, With Love From Spain, Melanie Martin, provides an amusing linguistic travel adventure for kids ages 8 and up. Adults will chuckle and relate to the main character of Melanie, who feels the pain and confusion of first love while filling her senses with the compelling Spanish landscape.

The Martin family band together for a two-week Spring break vacation as seen through the eyes of eleven-year-old Melanie. The author offers her readers a consistent, even tone throughout the book. Melanie's sometimes childish, sometimes teenage view of the world sets the stage for all that the Martin family experiences. From art museums to foreign cuisine, the author takes the reader with her wherever she goes. An additional plus to the book is that she phonetically spells the Spanish words that the fictitious Melanie learns. I found myself saying some of the words aloud and learning quite a few things along the way. An appendix of all the foreign words Ms. Weston used would have been an added benefit to the book.

You can almost smell the musty old four-hundred year-old paintings and taste the fresh pescado in the various bars and outdoor restaurants in which Melanie and her clan dine. One of my favorite lines in the book comes in the section "Angel's apartment, incredibly late". The author writes: "Spaniards don't believe in bedtime. They believe in nighttime." The cultural differences are fascinating to the reader, made all the more real by Melanie's enthusiasm and joie de vivre.

Luckily, Ms. Weston does not harp too long on the lovesick side of Melanie which could, to the adult reader, have become tiresome fairly quickly. Nonetheless, the reader is satisfied with the outcome of Melanie's relationship to the Spanish Migue who is 1 ½ years her senior. Readers will be relieved to know that they can read more about Melanie and Miguel in the fourth book in the series: Melanie in Manhattan.

With Love From Spain, Melanie Martin will make you want to take your kids on a European adventure of your own, no matter where you live in the world! I highly recommend the book for its witty, yet educational quality.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Book Ever.......2005-04-14

With Love from Spain Melanie Martin is written by Carol Weston. The book is about Melanie Martin and her family's vacation; her mom Miranda and her dad Marc have some business in Spain so they bring their daughter Melanie and her son Matt with them. While they are there they make plans to see Miranda's old boy friend from Spain and his son Miguel, and Melanie meets Miguel's cousin.
I like the book With Love from Spain Melanie Martin because it's about a girl I can relate to. For instance Melanie is ten and I'm ten; she's in fourth grade and I'm in fourth grade. She keeps a travel diary just like I do and we both travel a lot. I also like the book because Carol Weston includes interesting facts in the book. For example, Picasso painted the same painting many times in many different ways and they're all hanging up in a museum in Spain. I recommend the book for readers age 9 to 15.

This man is a genius, as much as for what he leaves you to imagine as for what he writes. Great entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars 'Pass out laughing' funny.......2005-01-09

I have always thought that Patrick McManus is the funniest writer on the planet. I read his stories when I need to laugh or relax. Sometimes I irritate my wife by reading it in bed. I try not to laugh out loud, but I only succeed in sounding like I am trying to muffle continuous sneezes.

However, not everyone gets it. I have been shocked by watching people read McManus without so much as a smile (though most start snorting like wild pigs on acid) . My only guess is that getting McManus requires a couple things. First, it requires some understanding of his experiences. He absolutely nails all of the stupid things 'outdoors men (outdoors people)' do and think, but don't want anybody to know about. Second, you have to see the self-deprecating aspect of his humor. Third, you can't look for great literature in integrated books. Patrick McManus is an excellent writer, if you see these as independent stories simply collected in a volume. They are meant for adults who want to laugh at themselves. So, If you are willing to or already meet the above three criteria, you will love this book.

By the way, I am a professor of clinical psychology and (other than worrying a little about McManus) I sometimes recommend this and other McManus books. I do this with people who have racing thoughts and anxiety at bedtime, and when I believe they have the necessary experiences to find it funny. It often works quite well. I think of his stories as little pieces of happiness. (Oh, that even makes me sick to hear. Sorry)

5 out of 5 stars No Comparisons This Time.......2003-01-12

This is the second collection of stories by Patrick F. McManus that I have read, and while he is compared to many notable names on the jacket, and I compared him to other humorists I like the first time I read his work, he deserves to stand on his own. It is not an issue of his being as good, nearly as good, or better than another humorist. He is unique and very special, Mr. McManus is an original.

I think the title of this collection, "Never Sniff A Gift Fish", is unfortunate for no such activity takes place within the book. Not unlike the dozens of stories on hunting and fishing, all he generally brings back from an outing is new humor; he apparently catches and shoots virtually nothing. As I mentioned after reading his first book, his friends will stop by and ask that he not even think about whatever it is they are off to hunt or fish while they are off doing it. He has said he is so bad entire states have banned him, as he can single handedly destroy tourism for a state, and no one will lend him small motorized machines as he invariably causes them to cease to function.

This collection is much earlier than the first that I read, and the stories contain wonderful bits about his childhood, and also as a new husband and a father. These are great stories, many that include his young family and virtually everyone is G-rated, place them on film and they would probably be made by Disney. This is great reading, great fun and wonderful humor totally lacking in pretense or show. If this man records his stories on tape I might break a rule that has never been broken, that of listening to an author as opposed to reading his book. And I don't hunt or fish, neither activity is necessary to enjoy these tales as they are about human behavior, his humans are just generally outside.

                          NEVER SNIFF A GIFT FISH
                          By: Patrick F. McManus

Have you ever heard of a great outdoorsman? You know, the one whose fly-casting technique can be compared to an old lady fighting off a bee with a broom handle. Or maybe the one whose attempts to pitch the family tent terrorized entire campgrounds. Well, for those of you who haven't heard of him, this book, will give you a little insight into the life of the great outdoorsman. Never Sniff A Gift Fish, is a great source for those useful camping phrases. Here are some of them.

Corn Flakes: A common camp food. Often eaten dry with salt and pepper since no one thought to bring milk.

Camping manuals: Books filled with ingenious camping tips which are forgotten the instant the camper sets foot in the field. "I read about a way to cook a chicken with a camera lens and a wire clothes hanger, but I can't remember how," he says. "Better just fry it."

Downwind: Whichever side of the campfire you happen to be on.
And who could forget "When hell freezes over": An expression used by wives and mothers to indicate the next time you'll get them to go on another camping trip.

This book is a hilarious combination of philosophy and fishing, all rolled into one. I loved the book, and I would definitely recommend this book to any outdoorsman, great or not, that has a sense of humor and a sense of what the author is going through.
