Anthony Marx brings a short history of the South African anti-apartheid movement in a descriptive, enriching way. Marx starts his time frame in 1960, but he does provide a brief history of the origins of the country and its harsh segregated policy of apartheid. the book deals with the evolution of domestic groups in their aims to reform the state. this is done, obviously, chronologically, stopping along the way for descriptions and analysis of the groups' activities and actions against the government. his stance holds him from giving an objective view of both sides of the historical picture in South Africa. the anti-apartheid groups discussed, such as the Black Consciousness movement, the ANC-aligned United Popular Front, and a myriad of trade unions, all are adequately described, analyzed, and reviewed, however the government's understanding of apartheid (even though it was catagorically WRONG) as well as the white minority's jaded thoughts of the non-white peoples of South Africa are not discussed for me to have seen their reasoning for holding on to the apartheid policy. nonetheless, if the reader wants to see how black movements succeeded and the an evaluation of their actions towards success, this book will be beneficial. i enjoyed his thoughts of each period in the thirty-year timeframe, and his ability to intelligently weigh the positive and negative outcomes. other respected persons (such as Tilly and Skocpol) credit Marx's ability to communicate the opposition movements development and evaluate their effectiveness.

How does democracy fare when the people governed insist they live in a world with witches? If the government of a people afflicted by witchcraft refuses to punish witches, how does it avoid becoming alienated from the perceived needs of its people or, worse, seen as being in league with witches? In Soweto, South Africa, the constant threat of violent crime, the increase in black socio-economic inequality, the AIDS pandemic, and a widespread fear of witchcraft have converged to create a pervasive sense of insecurity among citizens and a unique public policy problem for government.
In Witchcraft, Violence, and Democracy in South Africa, Adam Ashforth examines how people in Soweto and other parts of post-apartheid South Africa manage their fear of 'evil forces' such as witchcraft. Ashforth examines the dynamics of insecurity in the everyday life of Soweto at the turn of the twenty-first century. He develops a new framework for understanding occult violence as a form of spiritual insecurity and documents new patterns of interpretation attributing agency to evil forces. Finally, he analyzes the response of post-apartheid governments to issues of spiritual insecurity and suggests how these matters pose severe long-term challenges to the legitimacy of the democratic state.

I think this book is a great book for mature people to read. This book deals with interviews with the KKK and Neo-Nazis. Dr. Ezekiel is a elderly brave man who dares to interview the world's best known hate groups.

I can't imagine anyone not finding this funny, but alas, there are some out there, bless their hearts. Yes, some of the chapters aren't necessarily about the south so sue Celia - my God! You may have to take yourself a couple of rungs of the perfection ladder to laugh at this - but it IS funny!

This is worth reading if only for the chapter "Screw the Wisdom of Menopause." I laughed so loud when I read that one (at bedtime, in bed, with my folding fan sitting nearby ready for my next hot flash) that my dog became alarmed, flattened his ears, and needed to be hugged. I even read select passages to my husband, who wasn't amused -- no surprise there. But just one thing, ladies (because that's who's going to read this, dontcha' think?), this is not "southern literature" (per a previous review), and it's not even specifically southern. It's a collection of humor essays (except for one that is what I would call a "feel-good piece"), that offers wry observations about being a Mom, a wife, a woman of a certain age, *and* a Southerner. Rivenbark's language is occasionally rough, but then she spent years in a newsroom, so that's to be expected. The only reason she gets four stars instead of five from me is that she occasionally lets her writing get sloppy and her humor lapse into nastiness. Apart from those brief lapses, this was a lot of fun to read. Yes it was.

I thought this was going to be a book about the south and how cute and funny we are. It's not. It's about the new south that has had the south beaten out of it and homogenized beyond recognition by someone who has been not raised by parents but by a big screen TV, magazines and what she has bought into that passes as women's lib. This unnecessarily potty mouthed woman has every tired joke, reference and scenario that you have heard before. The book is outdated and I hardly cracked a smile the whole way through after about the 2nd chapter. If you love being grossed out and think everything your play group does and your gal pals talk about especially their children then this book might be funny to you. If you are looking for sophisticated humor it won't be here. There is very little to relate to here if you actually are Southern, and don't just happen to live here.

Unless you want an entire waiting room full of people (actually patients, but not very....) looking at you, don't read this book there. I snorted in public and am forever humiliated. This book makes you laugh out loud. Yeah, it does!!!!!
