Book Description
An inquiry into emergent media's rich lineage, Devices of Wonder explores the artful machines humans have used to augment visual perception.
The encyclopedic cabinet of curiosities serves as a model for this study of the archaic instruments lurking in state-of-the art technology. Featured in Devices of Wonder are android automata, lunar landscapes, perspective theaters, vues d'optique, microscopes, magnetic games, magic lanterns,
camera obscuras, boxes by Joseph Cornell, Lucas Samaras's Mirrored Room, Suzanne Anker's Zoosemiotics, Mark Tilden's UniBug 3.1, panoramic works by Jeff Wall and Giovanni Lusieri, paintings by Jean-Baptiste Chardin and Joseph Wright of Derby, projections by Diana Thater and James Turrell, and a
pop-up book by Kara Walker.
Barbara Stafford's introduction weaves these fascinating artifacts into a provocative narrative analyzing the complex links between old and new media. Her wide-ranging investigation is complemented by thirty-one short essays in which Frances Terpak tracks the often surprising connections among
individual items. Like the cabinet of curiosities, Devices of Wonder functions as an analogical instrument, reframing the beautiful "eye machines" that continue to mediate our encounters with the world.
This book is published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Getty Museum from November 13, 2001, through February 6, 2002.

Devices of Wonder: playful, engaging, instructive........2001-11-22
The book, "Devices of Wonder: From the World in a Box to Images on a Screen", is the catalog for an exhibition that has just opened. The first two reviews provide perspectives and understanding that are quite different from those offered in the preceding review from Publishers Weekly.
Leah Ollman (LA Times, 11/18/01) comments that, "We want to know the world and have experiences beyond the ordinary. We want to extend our vision beyond its familiar capacity. These are timeless desires, born with the species. They thrive on wonder, ... 'Devices of Wonder' traces those impulses and the technologies designed to act on them during the past 400 years. Full of serious toys, marvelous instruments and art resonant with the theme of discovery, the show [and catalog] track a history of visual thinking, 'from the world in a box to images on a screen,'..."
Speaking of both the exhibition and the catalog, the hard-nosed and insightful reviewer, Christopher Knight (Los Angeles Times, November 19, 2001) remarks that, "The Wunderkabinett is back, their show asserts--bigger, now nearly ubiquitous and considerably more far-reaching than any Baroque prince could ever have dreamed. Today's Wunderkabinett is sitting on your desk at home or in the office, or perhaps it's resting in your briefcase or on your lap." "Looking at wondrous things in a Wunderkabinett becomes the launch pad for the wonders of looking. Sight connects with insight. Mirrors facilitate reflection. Images are themselves ideas. ... Playful and unexpected connections get drawn. ... The show [and the catalog] is filled with these sorts of surprising delights, which can send your mind off in unexpected directions."

good solid intro to general photography.......2003-08-15
The strength of this book is its coverage of many areas. Those wishing to know about setting up thier own studio and printing color and black and white photos will find it here. Very useful for providing information on diverse topics from composition to meterering, travel to wildlife, lens choices, differences in print and slide film etc. The photos are also good references for ideas and concepts that were previousily explained.
There are Better books.......2002-05-30
Sure it covers a lot of areas. But its all from 50,000 feet. After done reading it, you may gain an general understanding of different subjects and area of interests of photography. There are not enough technical details to show how the result would be acheived. Don't expect this book to help you improve your photography skill. The pictures look like they come from the early 70s and certainly not creme of the crop. Many of them while relevant but not doing a good job showing the concepts.
After reading other books, I've found this book a complete waste of money. 2 stars for the vast coverage.
Full of Joy.......1999-11-22
It gave me the full concept of 135 photography. From using wide range of lens to dark room photography. In addition, it gave me the idea to take a wonderful and detailed photos
The best photography book I can find.......1998-11-27
After having reading and buying so many books on photography, I would say that this is the best book. This is really a very thick book, I find that instead of having buying a few books, this book give a very good in depth and wide coverage in all area.
It is very ideal book for all who are into photography.
Best, easiest to read photography book around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......1998-08-24
This photgraphy book by Kodak is the easiest book about photography that one can read. They put all the terms in an easy to read way so just about anyone can understand the how to take good pictures with any kind of camera. Great Book!!!!!!!!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
I love his observations!.......2007-07-22
Robert Fulghum finds delight in the daily details of life. He paints a wonderful picture from a simple scene and adds a philosophical twist. He cracks me up. His style is one of my favorites. Uncomplicated, observant, joyful. Delightful!
Right On Robert!.......2005-07-25
Much like the late Charles Kuralt, RF shows us what is right in America by going deep into the heartland, talking about everyday things and making them seem extraordinary. Fulghum, a Unitarian minister, reasons that most people are good at heart and his writings reflect his gentle ways and his comprehensive love of humanity. I could hear him speak for hours and hours.
a very worthwhile read.......2004-04-24
First, let me say that I read this book in one day, which is a feat in itself with my short attention span. And when I was finished, I honestly felt sad that it was over. Second, I'm not one to take the time to review books online, but this is one that is worthy of all the praise I can give it. This book is fantastic. It's the best book I've read in a long while. One moment, Fulghum is making you ponder some very deep subjects, and the next, he's got you laughing those really good, healthy belly laughs that are so few and far between. His insight on so many ordinary subjects is astounding. You will find yourself relating to some of the stories and touched or delighted by the others. My mother encouraged me to read this, and I've encouraged everyone I know to read it. Get this book. It's really worth the read.
How can I describe this work?.......2004-03-20
Imagine, if you will a Sunday evening, with everybody still in their church clothes after having eaten a delicious Sunday dinner. Everyone's sort of lazily sated and they all meet on the porch to hang out for a while: they wave and smile at neighbors passing by, perhaps they bask in the evening sunset. Then, someone let's out the loudest, longest burp. Making every one burst out laughing...that's a bit how Fulghum's book on everyday observations, inspirations from happy accidents, and the many, many people he has run into is like. Some of the stories are tenderhearted like his experiencing culinary delights (Jelly Bellys in Cheerios) with a grand child or his gaining a reluctant love of a neighbor's ol' dawg. Other stories are of the making lemonade out of lemons type...a good, good cigar gets swiped by someone who perhaps appreciated it more...the bride is plagued with hiccoughs in the middle of the wedding ceremony....old VFWer's crash their pals' funeral with an anemic 10 gun salute and a stripper...all done in Fulghum's easy-does-it style. Do I like the book? Of course I do. Does it make me smile? You bet. My only problem is waiting long enough to forget all about the book and how much I love it, so that I can read it again like a 'new book' and enjoy it some more....does that sound like a Fulghum scenario to you? Anyway, get it and read it one lazy Sunday afternoon. You will thank me for the suggestion.
I fell asleep with this book clutched in my arms.......2003-02-02
Amazing...I didn't want it to end. It opened a new fronteer of book reading in my life. It changed me. This man, Fulghum, packs so much emotion into his words. How I wish I could live like him, or at least write like him. Definintely inspritional and touching and funny. I can't say it enough! Read it! Nothing out there compares to Fulghum's sensitivity about everything in life. I don't know how to say it any other way. If I had even half as much truth and insight as this author has, I would be happy.

What Do You Do With A Potty? An Important Pop-up Book
ASIN: 0812065646 |
Book Description
Twenty-seven humorous vignettes are cleverly captioned illustrations designed to help parents and kids cope with the challenges of toilet training. Toddlers will laugh when they see Mark picking out a potty at the toy store. And back at home, Toby didn't quite make it to the potty this time. He'll have better luck next time. Jordon waits till the last minute too-but hooray! We see him in the bathroom, and we know he made it on time. Alison is proud because she uses a grown-up toilet, and Amanda reads a picture book when she sits on her potty. Neither parents nor children need to take potty training too seriously, because sooner or later, everything works out just fine. That's the message at the heart of Bob McGrath's cheerful book-and boys and girls will enjoy seeing their own potty experiences repeated on these pages.
Customer Reviews:
Waste of Money.......2001-12-19
I bought this book and was very disappointed. My daughter is 3 years old and has no interest in the potty. This book doesn't teach any basics or gives them any motivation. It is one-liners and children don't get the jist of the toilet learning process, my daughter finds it confusing and never pays attention when I read it. Just a waste of money, in my opinon.
Didn't impress me.......2001-11-27
I bought four books about potty training and this was the worst! Made no sense (must admit I am no child psychologist) and my child remembers and understands the other three books and wants to read them over and over again unlike this one. I wouldn't recommend it at all.
27 Chilling Tales of the Potty.......2001-10-18
Bob McGrath is a literary genius. His chillingly accurate portrayal of life on the potty from the perspective of 27 very different people will keep you riveted till the last page. Coupled with the gritty realism of Shelley Dieterichs' illustrations, this should be on the top of everyone's Must Read List. A story that particularly struck me was that of little Jacob Malloy, a boy who discovers the potty's magical ability to "flush the bad stuff away." His initial offerings to the potty are innocent enough, such as candy wrappers and plastic cowboys, but things take a turn for the macabre when his little sister eats his half of a candy bar that Daddy told them to share. I don't want to spoil it, but it has a plot twist the likes of which I've never read before or since. McGrath's "Uh-Oh! Gotta Go!" is a masterpiece that is destined for the top of Amazon's bestseller list.
The author is Sesame Street's "Bob" and he knows!.......2001-07-22
This books helps teach kids about different ways children and their potties go through this rite of passage together. My 2 and 1/2 year old LOVED this book and I truly appreciate the diverse group of children on its colorful and vibrant pages. From have potty, will travel, to wanting it in the bedroom, each child has a signature and singular experience with their potty which culminates at the end with the same result for everyone: underpants! (Our ultimate goal, don't you know.) There is not a plot but if you are a parent who asks comprehension and extension questions when you read to your child, this will be perfect!
Motivating the Child is the key!.......2001-01-12
I have used this book through training 3 children. We read it while the child sat on the potty and there was so much discussion from each page, each child lingered a little longer on the potty with many successes. There is a page using the potty as a drum, and I would ask, "Do we do that?", a page singing - "Can you sing a song while sitting?" Make the book INTERACTIVE! It does not have to be a story of 1 character. The book certainly does go through steps: purchasing a potty, teaching animals (demonstration), visting with your potty, wearing underwear. I immediately put the photo in the back with my first child but being a baby photo - every child since - insists it is their own, and waits in expectation of that page! Don't pass over this book!

ASIN: 0689811608 |
Book Description
Meet Providence Traveler. Providence likes to make things. Not just ordinary things like macaroni pictures, but things that have never been made before. So it is not surprising that her hero is Leonardo da Vinci, the great sixteenth-century artist and inventor. One day at the library, when Providence is taking out her favorite book, Leonardo da Vinci: Boy Was He Busy, she finds a scrap of paper covered with interesting designs for what looks like a mechanical mouse with a key coming out of its back. Diligently she follows the instructions on the paper and builds the intricate mouse. Just as she is putting on the finishing touches, in barge her brother and the meddlesome McMuzzin twins, who turn the key in the mouse's back. Suddenly there is a sound like thunder and a flash of light...and the four find themselves transported to Florence, Italy, during the time when Leonardo was alive. Will Providence get to meet her hero?
Gifted artist and storyteller Robert Sabuda introduces young readers to an extraordinary new character -- Providence Traveler -- whose curiosity and excitement will match their own. Providence leads readers on an exciting adventure, full of fun and fascinating information.
Customer Reviews:
Sabuda's Artwork is GREAT!.......2007-07-19
Pop-up collectors need to take a serious look... While not a pop-up, you'll surely appreciate the artistic value!
Great Book!.......2005-07-21
I used this book in a summer session with K-2 graders. We did it in four segments...vocab words etc... I stopped in spots which kept them in suspense for the next installation. The kids really liked it!
Time Travel + Invention Delights.......2004-04-03
Use this one with fifth graders on up, get out the Leonardo books, a map of Florence, and hang on to your hats. Lots of little detailed pages on cathedrals, printing, and daily life and the storyline's frantic quality (Providence has to find the twins who have the windup key for Topo, the time travel machine/mouse that got them to 1504. When you've read it three or four times, maybe the students will want to take Providence Traveler to other long ago and far away locations and write their own adventures of this fearless mousette who loves to invent things.

Uh-Oh! Is awesome.......2003-05-24
As a preschool teacher, we have used this book to the great delight of the children. It has become an instant favorite. The children love the rhymes and the "uh-oh" that happens when the milk is spilled, the balloon pops, etc. It illustrates that we all make mistakes and we are loved just the same.
