Book Description

The fourth edition of Design and Analysis continues to offer a readily accessible introduction to the designed experiment in research and the statistical analysis of the data from such experiments. Unique because it emphasizes the use of analytical procedures, this book is appropriate for all as it requires knowledge of only the most fundamental mathematical skills and little or no formal statistical background. Topics include: single- and two-factor designs with independent groups of subjects; corresponding designs with multiple observations; analysis of designs with unequal sample sizes; analysis of covariance; designs with three factors, including all combinations of between-subjects and within-subject factors; random factors and statistical generalization; and nested factors. This book lives up to its name as a handbook, because of its usefulness as a source and guide to researchers who require assistance in both planning a study and analyzing its results.

2 out of 5 stars Low quality stats textbook.......2007-01-18

If you are a professor looking at this, do your students a favor and don't use this book. It is confusing, difficult to follow, boring, and a waste of money. Every student who has used this book says about the same thing, "I tried reading it for the first couple weeks but I stopped when it became obvious that I wasn't getting anything from it." I bet there are many copies of it out there with the first 100 pages highlighted but nothing after that. If you are a student buying this book for a class, I am sorry. I recommend buying supplementary material that is more approachable.

5 out of 5 stars hard cover and softcover.......2005-09-23

I remember I odered this book with a hardcover, but what I recieved is softcover. I am using this book, and won't return it to you. But I hope next time, it won't happen to me again. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Design and Analysis: A Researcher's Handbook.......2005-08-15

This is absolutely one of the best statistical analysis reference books that I've ever seen. It's easy to read, easy to follow and doesn't skip the minor steps that people several years out of the academia environment tend for forget. I highly recommend this handbook for anyone that is wanting to do Real Work in Real Time.

5 out of 5 stars Intuitive, yet rigorous.......2001-11-20

This is probably the best experimental design and analysis text available out there. Unlike other texts (e.g., Winer et al.'s), it is writen as a book to be read rather than as a reference to be consulted sporadically. My graduate students all praise it for being just at the right level of intuitiveness-rigor. I suspect that it covers about 85-90% of the analysis issues that behavioral researchers face with respects to experimental data (e.g., from one-way ANOVAs to three-way mixed-design factorials, contrast analysis, elementary ANCOVA). For the rest (e.g., fractional designs, random-effects models), researchers should consult more technical (and less readable) texts such as Kirk's and Winer et al.'s. I only wished that the author would come up with a new edition--the current edition (the 3rd) was published in 1991--and that he would use a broader range of examples (e.g.,from social psychology as opposed to cognitive psychology only). Overall, however, it's a great reference.

4 out of 5 stars Business students who want simple "why" & "how" of technic.......1998-11-01

A business student interested in multivariate techniques seeks a book on regression and ANOVA that does not have involved/advanced mathematics. This book is an answer to that.

An earlier edition emphasised the Behavioural Sciences. I expect that this edition attempts to speak to a wider audience

1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2007-04-28

I took a class that used the text book "Design and Analysis" by Keppel and I naively bought this thinking it would help. It may seem an exageration, but I honetly did not find anything useful in this "outline". I would sell it back, except for the fact that I know some other unfortunate student would waste money on a useless "outline" of a great textbook.

1 out of 5 stars Design and Analysis: A Researcher's Handbook.......2007-03-08

This product was not what was expected. It is actually a detailed outline and overview of a book called "Design and Analysis: A Researcher's Handbook". The description did not make any clarifications that this was a supplement to the book. It was misleading and I ended up returning the product.

2 out of 5 stars just notes.......2007-03-08

This is not the real book. It's only the vocabulary definitions and some practice pages. Could be a helpful study guide, but it's definitely not the full text!

1 out of 5 stars Unexpected.......2007-02-21

This book is essentially a book of notes that is supposed to be used to supplement the text book. When viewed on the Amazon website it appears to be a soft copy of the text and not a whole different text. Actually, w/o the text copy, this book is useless.

              Book Description

Children love to write stories, but, influenced by the media, they emphasize action and dot placeless landscapes with flat, one-dimensional characters. The Whole Story addresses these issues and provides a practical and innovative model to help teachers guide young writers to find the whole story - and to tell it well.

Karen Jorgensen takes you inside her classroom, demonstrating how - over the course of a school year - she gives lessons, conducts conferences, and facilitates shares to help writers develop and refine stories. Basing these interactions on a combination of "inquiry" and "modeling," she guides students to observe how people move, talk, and feel. She helps them explore everyday landscapes, examine event logic, and then revise stories in consultation with other writers.

In the first section of the book, Jorgensen outlines procedures for running a successful workshop and introduces the technique of scene writing to help writers move from action to character-driven fiction. Subsequent sections focus on the craft of characterization, first guiding youngsters to observe the world as writers and then showing them how to use these observations to rewrite characters in their ongoing fiction. Jorgensen also introduces methods for refining stories, discovering setting, clarifying plot, finding themes, and evaluating craft. The appendix provides student handouts to support lessons.

5 out of 5 stars Writing Workshops: Young Writers in Progress.......2002-04-04

I thought this book was very interesting, detailed, and very instructive. I think with all its techiques it provides, it promotes students to enjoy writing stories. Not only that, but it also links their writing to reading as well. Being that the children are always on one side writing the story, I think they will be more eager to read books or stories in order to get a feel for what is needed in their own writing. I thought one of the techniques used in the workshop, the Peer Response Record, was very interesting because the students have an opportunity to become better writers themselves as they work and respond to their peer's writing. Writing workshops are rarely used where I am from, which is very sad to say. After reading this book, I feel that these workshops are the best methods in student writing and revision. I plan on hopefully using a workshop similar to Jorgensen's in the future when I become an elementary teacher. All the materials I will need are provided in the appendix of the book, which will become a great and helpful tool.

What if you wrote to the Baseball Hall of Fame offering to donate a full set of Mickey Mantle's toenail clippings? Why, they'd be glad to have 'em--even if you are "a Level 4 bed-wetter." Cooperstown is only one of many institutions terrorized in Letters from a Nut, a collection of crazed correspondence by Ted L. Nancy. The name is a pseudonym, perhaps for Jerry Seinfeld, who wrote the introduction. Seinfeld never comes clean, but the yocks sure sound like his material. And the letters have his prints all over them--who else would write the L.A. Lakers posing as a rabid fan who wears pants with a see-through back end, "for medical reasons"? Whoever wrote it, the book's a real lark. Where else can you meet "Pip, the Mighty Squeak," a man who gambles in a giant shrimp costume, or a corn that looks like Shelley Fabares? Only inside the fevered brain of Ted L. Nancy--whether he's Jerry Seinfeld or not.

He is, in reality, a twisted prankster -- a supremely off-kilter alter ego who sends patently ridiculous letters and queries to (and receives surprisingly earnest responses back from) corporate honchos, entertainment conglomerates, national publications, politicians, celebrities and heads of state to everyone, in fact, from the president of the Bon Ami Cleanser Company to U.S. Vice President Al Gore.

Letters From A Nut is an insanely inspired, truly madcap collection of Nancy correspondence, a laugh-out-loud-in-public-places aggregation of official -- and officially certifiable -- requests, complaints, fan mail and questions that could not possibly have been taken seriously...but, amazingly, were!

4 out of 5 stars Some VERY funny material.......2007-10-03

Let me start by saying: I get where some of the negative reviews are coming from. There is a lot of repetition in LFAN. This sort of thing has been done before. Some of the gags don't quite work. Few of the respondants really "fell" for the gags. In spite of all of this, however, LFAN did have me laughing out loud...a lot. Being no fan of spoilers, I won't highlight any of my favorite lines here. Suffice it to say, there are some extremely funny letters in this collection. If you're not howling after 10 minutes, put the book down. It won't get better. The humor's not for you. If you are howling after 10 minutes, read on! There's plenty more where that came from...

                            4 out of 5 stars Good Fun.......2007-07-01

I first read parts of this book years ago. I finally bought my own copy, and I'm glad I did. "Letters from a Nut" will not cause you to become sick from laughing so hard, but it will put a smile on your face.

The concept of writing ridiculous letters to businesses and corporations to see what kind of response will be given is an entertaining idea. There are some letters that will not make the reader chuckle, but over half of the letters were worth a slight chuckle. Some even made me laugh outloud and ask someone else to take a look at the intitial letter and the response letter.

This is also a good book to go back and re-read once in a while.

                            Give it a try.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised by "Letters From a Nut".

                            See ya next review.

                            5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Hysterical.......2007-06-11

You may find it hard to believe that anyone could be so amused by a book. I had to buy this after laughing myself to tears in a bookstore. I was literally doubled over with laughter after reading the first few pages of this book. This is pure, side splitting humor at its best. I don't think I ever laughed so hard at something I've read. Even a person with the dullest sense of humor can find at least one letter in this book that will make it well worth the purchase price.

5 out of 5 stars A Book Without Which You Will Not Want To Be .......2007-04-25

From the time I picked up Ted Nancy's book until I put it down several hours later,I was convulsed with laughter. Someday I intend to read the book!

5 out of 5 stars As great as I thought it would be.......2007-02-17

Before I tell you what I think about this book, I'd like to address an older review for this book. The review I am referencing was a spotlight review, and the only thing it seemed to illuminate was the complete ignorance of the person who left the review. This reviewer gave this book two stars! And if that isn't incredible enough, he goes on to say that "Nancy doesn't have talent," as well as saying, "We can all write stupid letters, but if we can't catch the victim in our trap what's the use?"

What's incredible is by saying everyone can write "stupid" letters, he is including himself in the group. So He thinks he can write as well as Nancy does? HA! What he fails to realize is these letters aren't "stupid", but are in fact quite brilliant as they stretch the imagination way beyond the normal limits. But he is right about something: he is quite capable of writing stupid things, such as the review he left for this book. There is not a single thing in this world that everybody can do, least of all display genius on paper. Now, on to what I think of this book.

Very simply, this book is hysterical. If you enjoy the musings of a chaotic mind, then you will find this book very enjoyable. Ted Nancy is quite a character, and his letters reflect a certain brilliance. Anyone with a sense of humor will find this a highly memorable read. So what are you waiting for? Order it. But don't take my word for it, take all the people's word below me. They loved it, I loved it, and I have no doubt that you will love it also.

Seinfeld.  For more than 33 million viewers, the Emmy Award-winning television show has become a Thursday night ritual.  Now, even though the show has ended, Jerry Seinfeld's distinct brand of humor can still be yours.

Ted L.  Nancy's first book, Letters from a Nut, with an introduction by Jerry Seinfeld, now has more than 225,000 copies in print.  In More Letters From a Nut, master-prankster Nancy shares even more sidesplittingly funny letters he has written and the unbelievable true responses he has received.

                            5 out of 5 stars Simple Comedy.......2006-11-30

Having already read Ted L. Nancy's first volume, I was more than excited to read more outrageous letters. Similar to the Laszlo Letters (but much better), Ted L. Nancy writes zany letters to all sorts of organizations (companies, governments, the military, hotels and more) to make his hilarious requests. Though they are, of course, outlandish, but that's the entertainment.

Equally as entertaining are some of the response letters. Because most aren't totally sure that Ted L. Nancy is fake, they have to diplomatically word their letters -- great stuff.

Jerry Seinfeld has written the forward to both books by Nancy, causing many to speculate that he is the real author. Check out the wikipedia page on Ted Nancy for more details, but I'm not completely convinced that Seinfeld is the real author. Nevertheless, More Letters From a Nut continues the great tradition from before, and also makes for great comedy when read aloud. Enjoy it!

                            5 out of 5 stars Another Winner.......2006-08-01

More hilarious satire (in letter form) from "Ted L. Nancy" who writes these jaw-droppingly unbelievable letters to corporations, governments, businesses and individuals, and the most remarkable part is, more often than not he gets a reply from these poor souls who try to piece together the meaning of Nancy's deadpan inquires about such inanities as the wearing of costumes on public buses, a hotel's policy on dealing with a chronic bedwetter who wishes to check in. A very funny book in a goofy collection.

                            3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2006-06-25

More Letters from a Nut was fairly funny. There were a few laugh out loud moments (like the inquiry as to whether the US Treasury was going to be putting Lincoln's bottom half instead of his portrait on the five dollar bill - gotta love that!) Overall, though, I thought the letters were too far fetched to even be slightly plausible - and being plausible (to a degree) is what makes a premise like this work.

I felt Paul Rosa's Idiot Letters was much funnier. I haven't read the first Letters from a Nut, though. Maybe it will be better...

Letters from a Nut is clearly without a doubt the funniest book ever writtern.

More Letters from a Nut is hugely funny, but not as funny.

Either way, this book will give you hours of belly laughs.

Ted L. Nancy (if that is your real name) strikes for a third time with his mischievous Extra Nutty! Even More Letters From a Nut! edition. These are more frivolous correspondences posing some of the most whimsical requests and awkward commentaries imaginable to unsuspecting recipients. He goes a bit further in this book than he did in the first Letters from a Nut publication, so expect the laugh meter to increase by a few decibels. Again, the victims respond, clueless of the gag just inflicted upon them. Some, however, respond with whimsical correspondence.

This is a great book that ,unfortunately, after you've read it once, you probably wont want to revisit for sometime to come. Nonetheless, it is worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Funny book and series!.......2006-06-14

This book was just as funny if not funnier than the original title. I'm the kind of person who doesn't laught at TV shows or movies unless I'm with a group, but when reading alone, I found myself cracking up quite often. Ted has quite a random mind and comes up with the wierdest, akwardest, funniest letters ever; to which the companies actually reply! Usually, I don't enjoy reading, but this book just brought it to life. Probably in my top 10 of all time.

4 out of 5 stars Nutcase giving the Chills.......2006-02-21

I liked the Concept of Ted Nancy way of thinking. I found that after reading the first 20 letters, I already knew the rest of the book. I expected to see some companies respond with a nutty answer, which doesn't happen to often.

5 out of 5 stars Funniest thing i have ever read.......2005-10-06

I bought all books in this series within a few weeks after discovering them. Hands down the funniest stuff I have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars THE funniest book that I've EVER read!.......2005-09-10

Need I say more? My only complaint is that he is now too popular to write any more letters and too many people will catch on and try and send humorous letters back (that would undoubtedly pale in comparison), instead of a serious response.
