I found this book to be a bit confusing, I think the author combined about four short stories into one book. The character Reed was so sick and twisted that at times I had to skip through his parts. This was truly a disturbing book and I should warn you the title is much better than what the book truly is about. I haven't given up on the author though I will try one more of her books and then if it's like this one.... Well let's just say it's a wrap!!

New Allison Hobbs Fan..........2007-08-22

I was interested in this book due to the Zane affiliation. I enjoyed this book and I can now say that I am a fan of Allison Hobbs. I looked forward to seeing what wild and crazy things Reed would do next, he has major issues. I read this book in about a week, there was enough going on that made me WANT to keep reading. I look forward to reading other books by this author.

Allison Hobbs is a wonderful writer! If you haven't read at least one of her books, you don't know what you are missing. I have read every single one of her books, can't wait for her to write more! This book was a great book that totally engaged my attention and kept me on the edge of my seat.

I was so happy for Dayna in the ending. Reed was CRAZY!! This story could be anyone's story. A definite must-read. Loved it! Can't wait to read Hobbs' next book, "Bonafide Golddigger." I am RUNNING to the bookstore to get it her writing is so good! No disappointments here!

Took a while to get through it!.......2007-08-08

This book was an ok read although it took me ahwile to read it! The characters were great ( Reed was a trip).But I would reccomend that you pick it up from the library.

Wicked............2007-07-29

Ms. Hobbs is an excellent author that has a very unique style of writing. She captures her readers in tales that go above and beyond the average mind and enters into the devious and yet oh so wicked minds of her characters.

"Dangerously In Love" was a great novel and for some reason her character Reed made me think of some type of sci-fi storyline. She gives African Americans a touch of Stephen King in the urban world!!

Same old same old.......2007-06-27

I like Anne Perry in general. Don't read too many in a row because they are all essentially the same... not entirely great mysteries surrounded by extensive social commentary. Excellent social commentary, very interesting, insightful, etc... but it slows down the plot to a snail's pace. Reading one once in a while is nice... but don't indulge in many at a time or you'll be disappointed in the plot and pace and rather bored with the social commentary. (at least, I was... and it was one of the selling points early on in the series...)

not just crime, but a crime that may also be treason.......2007-06-07

I had been working my way through Anne Perry's William Monk series and had not read one of her Charlotte & Thomas Pitt novels for quite a while. In my effort to learn from other authors and editors, however, and thus become a better novelist myself, I was reading Donald Maass' Writing the Breakout Novel.

Maass, who is Perry's agent, refers to "Silence in Hanover Close" as her "breakout" novel, attributing her increased sales from that point forward to the enlarged premise of this story --- not just crime, but a crime that may also be treason.

The murder of an important employee of the British Foreign Office, and the disappearance of documents which might be relevant to important negotiations with the Germans about dividing up Africa (this in the late 1800s), certainly provides the higher stakes. Perry takes this possibility and develops an exciting detective story.

The unorthodox work of Charlotte and Emily, while Thomas is "otherwise detained," was a pleasure to savor, and of course there are all the period details that make reading Perry's work so much fun.

There's also a major surprise at the end, one that I did not intuit, which brings together all of the unexplained threads that had me properly puzzled. If I have any criticism of the book, it's that the ending comes about a little too quickly. But it's a good one.

LEW WEINSTEIN

Big surprise?.......2005-11-16

Perhaps I have read and heard too many Perry books. This one finally came out in audiobook. Not to be passed up. However, fairly early in the book I knew what the big surprise would be. Knowing Perry's writing goals, it was obvious, despite the major plot distraction. I knew none of the three "detectives", and friends, would stumble to it until the end of the book. (More than half the book passes while they wonder and wonder, not exercising their usually efficient brain power.) But they never did. I can't even belatedly feel pleased about someone's cleverness. So it's really a disappointing effort.

My favorite yet.......2005-09-01

The 9th in the Pitt series, this is my favorite so far. I love the image Pitt gives off "In fact he was downright scruffy, clothes all a mismatch, pockets full of rubbish." I forget that he looks like that because he's so good at his detective work. I'm sure him a Charlotte are a bit of a mismatch. I don't get the impression Charlotte is anything but neat and tidy.
This book had both Charlotte and Pitt in it, the lovely Aunt Vespasia and Charlotte's sister Emily, all my favorite characters.
Pitt has his own brush with the law and it's left up to Charlotte and Emily to solve this mystery.
If you only read one of the Pitt series, I'd make it this one.

So original.......2003-11-21

Having been a big fan of Agatha Christie all my life, I found Anne Perry to be comparable and just as original. Especially in this book. From the first word to the last, she had me hooked and I read this book in record time.

Sadly, against the advice of others, I read this book first instead of starting the series with "Cater Street Hangman." I was just so eager because I heard this was the best of the series. While that might be true, I also found that because I read this book first, I kind of ruined it for myself with the previous books becuase I knew how things would turn out. So my advice is read this, but start with "Cater Street Hangman" if you are new to the Pitt series. (And believe me, after reading this one, you'll WANT to read the others.)

Good But Not the Best Perry Mystery.......2007-10-07

I havae read many of Perry's "Monk" novels and like him so was unsure
how I would like Insp. Pitt and wife, Charlotte. I love both
Hester Monk and Charlotte Pitt. They are really alot like. In this
novel, Pitt is investigating a 3 year old mystery. Seems a member
of the foreign office wants to marry a young, beautiful widow whose
husband was murdered 3 years ago. The foreign office wants to make
sure no hint of scandal is tied to the widow. Her reputation has to
be spotless. Charlotte,s sister Emily moves into the house of the
young widow as a maid to try to find the murderer. It is interesting
how Emily manages to fool the family into thinking she is a maid
as Emily ordinarily is a very wealthy widow. I think Perry does tend
to go into too many details as times-too many thoughts of the
characters when you want to say, "let,s get on with the story".
As with other Perry novels, there are some shockers to deal with.
No matter any faults in her tales, I still cant put them down.

Excellent tool on your path to understanding - with one small problem.......2007-04-27

When I decided to break off the relationship with my partner, it was truly the most difficult decision of my life - emotional, heartbreaking, and gut-wrenching. The worst part was feeling the guilt of knowing I had shattered someone else's heart. This book was an excellent way to begin the journey to healing for myself, through understanding what I need to do to prepare myself for the road ahead -- whether alone or coupled. My only disappointment is that while this book did mention that it was targeted equally to couples separating, regardless of who did the deed, the stories clearly focused on the difficult time of those who had their partners leave them, rather than on those who had difficulty coping with a decision they had made to end their relationship. Overall, however, a fantastic tool for those going through a separation or divorce.

An Insightful View.......2006-03-09

Interestingly, most books on the subject of dealing with the aftermath of separation and divorce are aimed towards a female audience. Of all the titles I browsed, this was one that struck me as non gender specific. In purchasing the book and reading it, I found that the book was wonderfully applicable to both men and women.
Personally, I gained a great deal of insight into the things I have been experiencing since my wife announced that she wanted to separate. I started to read the book feeling that I was the only one in the world in a similar situation that was feeling the things that I was feeling. Very early into the book, I found that not only was it true that others were feeling these very same things but that these feelings were actually normal.
I took great comfort in being able to place myself in the process that the book describes. I also derived certain comfort in the knowledge of what is to come as I continue through the process. After all, if the author has defined the parts of the process I have experienced in such a correct manner, is it not logical to assume that the remainder of the process will be much as he has described in the book?
Without reservation I can say that this book has helped. It is informative, insightful and full of very true observations. If you need to come to grips with the things that are associated with being suddenly on your own as the result of divorce and separation, this book will most assuredly assist you.

On Your Own Again.....words of comfort and patience.......2002-11-09

This is a wonderful book with words of comfort and patience that are as up-to-date as any thing else out there. This author writes from the point of view of a therapist AND a person who has been there himself. He does not seek to explain the why of a breakup...but rather how to move on. I found the section on the most common mistakes people get into in the acute stage of breakup wonderfully "right on time." While this book focuses heavily on marriage and heterosexual relationships, I think anyone just out of a committed relationship will find it helpful.

Not helpful to me!!.......2002-05-02

My boyfriend recently broke up with me and broke my heart in a second.I'm 27 years old and never felt like this before. I searched and bought many books trying to find a way to make me feel better and find answers to the tones of questions and ifs that were bothering my mind.This book didn't help me a lot. The writing feels distant and it is difficult to see the author as a friend or at least as someone close to you and your feelings.It can be useful only if you were married and now divorced but not if you had a relationship and lived separately.It has a lot of chapters concerning how to raise your children after a divorce or how to split the money and the invstments, things that can't concern people who had a serious relationship,who loved the other very much but who haven't been married or lived together for a long time.Also I found its advice old-fashioned and out of date.

Soothing words during a rough time.......2000-08-24

When I read "On Your Own Again" just a few months ago, I still wasn't sure I would reunite with my love. In fact, we remain separated but hope that over time we can come together again - but not right away. Healing takes time. "On Your Own Again" helped me to understand from a healthy perspective what I need to heal in myself, regardless of whether we come together again or not. I discovered that "working things out" means learning how to care ABOUT myself (and someone else), versus caring FOR them, and hoping to be taken care OF. As a woman, this was a big obstacle to overcome. I now understand realistic expectations and I feel free to discover what makes me a productive, full and responsible person. And a healthy one. I realize that all of the things I want from a partner are virtues and characteristics that I must own, develop and BE for myself. I AM on my own again and when or if my love and I get back together, I will be a full, complete partner to him. If we permanently break apart, then even through the painful sadness, I will at least know that inside, I'm growing and sustaining myself. This isn't a "how-to" book (there isn't a quick remedy for this kind of thing). It's a guide that gently teaches you that you can be your own trusted friend and that no other person can be for you what you can't be for yourself.

A nice concept, but far too saccharine for the real world.......2001-05-29

I enjoy most interactive decision-making books. Throughout the book, the child or young teen reader is confronted with difficult decisions. The reader's choice influences the outcome of the story. Unfortunately, I felt that this particular book is considerable weaker than the "Decision is Yours" series.

In this book, a girl is struggling to come to terms with her parents' divorce. Although the reader is offered a brancing plot based on choices, most of the decisions seem to end up with a similar happy ending. The daughter always seems to quickly come to accept her father's remarriage. I think that this sort of book works better if you have the option to come to an unhappy ending. Children may benefit from trying out several different scenarios and different types of endings. This book does not give the child this option. I found myself getting frustrated when each time I chose a different path, I still ended up in the same warm cozy place.
