Useless.......2006-05-12
The status of this book is unknown: It's not a technical book, it's not an equipment guide, it's not a photography book neither...
Reading it is just having a conversation with the authors you met in a street cafe. They talk to you for 2 hours, they show you your equipment and say "you have to move beyond 35mm for better pictures" and they leave. But you're not convinced...
Why?
The most important reason is: The pictures in this book are awful. Maybe 2 or 3 are aesthetically OK, but the rest is just mediocre. When you see them, you say "If I'll have photos like these, why to buy medium or large format equipment?". It seems like the authors like travelling from time to time, and when you see the pictures they made aronud the world, you say "well they spent their money for nothing", the photos are so uninteresting.
The second reason: Technically, the book is near to level zero. Even the camera movements, which are the main advantage of large format, are not really explained.
All you can find in this book is a couple of tips and tricks, if you already know someting about the topic.
Why I wrote this review?
BECAUSE I WANTED TO CONVINCE YOU THAT YOU MUST MAKE MEDIUM OR LARGE FORMAT PHOTOGRAPHY. Believe me, it worths. When you print your first pictures from a 2 x 3 negative, you understand why. When the camera movements allow you to play with depth of field, sharpness etc, you understand how much you were limited with 35mm or digital. GO TO MEDIUM OR LARGE FORMAT, YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED. THE 2ND HAND EQUIPMENT PRICES ARE SO LOW NOW THAT YOU CAN OFFER YOURSELF SUPER CAMERAS! GO, AND TRY!
But not with this book... No.
Demystifying medium and large format photography.......2006-02-12
If you ever wondered about cameras professionals use, this book will demystify medium and large format photography. For anyone who is serious about photography, you must know all the equipment options out there. This book introduces reader to a subject largely unknown to amatuers. There is a wealth of information in the book and it is very well organized. This book will make you think about very important part of camera; the recording medium.
Authors cover different films, formats and cameras in very easy to read order. They make compelling argument for moving up to medium or large format even if you are not a professional photographer. I was delighted to know that moving up need not mean any more expense than using regular 35 mm equipment. This book is full of insights authors have accumulated over their long professional careers. You will realise why your expensive 35 SLR could not give you professional picture quality no matter how hard you tried.
Some readers may get overwhelmed by the information on a lot of makes and models. However this is very valuable information at one place and as your interest in MF and LF photography grows, you will keep referring back to these details.
What distinguishes large format from other type of cameras is the ability called 'movements'. Movements is what gives large format cameras the ultimate edge. It is not just the large size of negative. It is important to know this to understand LF cameras better.
You will realize that even with the advent of digital cameras, MF and especially LF cameras will retain their edge for a long time to come.
Don't wast your time!.......2005-12-21
This is unquestionably the most worthless collection of pages I have ever read. It consists of very brief factoids strung together with meaningless chatter.
Do not buy this book if you want to learn anything about how to make large or medium format photographs.
Great Book.......2005-12-11
For anyone contemplating moving into either Medium or Large Format Photography, this is a book well worth buying. I have a couple of other books by the duo of Hicks and Schultz, and have not been quite as enamored. With this book, they have hit a home run. Not only is there a great deal of practical information, the photographs and illustrations are all well done and printed with a semblance of quality. It has always amazed me that many books on Photography, are put out into the market with such poor quality paper and printing, that it belies the effort.
Good Medium Format Overview.......2002-01-04
This book contains a good overview of the various medium & large format cameras currently available on the market. It is however, a little dated in that it does not contain some of the newer 645 autofocus models. This book is highly recommended for those who are considering the purchase of medium or large format equipment,as it describes the strengths and weaknesses of popular rollfilm formats & brands.
Customer Reviews:
Out of Date.......2006-06-06
Hard to believe this book's still in print. The author apparently died before the book was published in 1991, and it badly needs updating as the MF camera information dates from that era. Nothing on recent MF cameras, digital, Russian Kievs, etc.
It's pretty light in the information department as well. A casual review of camera models and the author's use of a few of them on a trip here and there do not make for an intensive education in the field of medium-format photography.
Medicore.......2003-02-09
Between digital and lack of acknowledgement of Soviet equipment I found this book medicore in the classes I taught. Wish I'd saved the money for a new camera
Not too bad, but very good for beginners.......2001-10-17
Lief Ericksenn has created an interesting introduction to the medium format field. Many of his pictures are excellent - especially those centering around the space program. The text is a little light, possibly designed for a beginner like myself. Still, there is a great deal of information about composition, darkroom and manufacturers. Perhaps an update to the text is in order. However, considering the number of books written on the subject, I would consider this a must-have for those interested in MF photography.
An initial look at Medium Format.......2001-06-24
This is a good reference and primer for those wishing to explore the medium format world of photography. The logic and language of Ericksenn is easy to read and understand. It is obvious from his work shown, that he is a professional and earnest about this topic. Most serious photographers would not find this text challenging or "new" enough, but a novice may. Some helpful references are the scenics pictured, taken with different lenses and film sizes to demonstrate perspectives etc. Most of the information about the cameras discussed is basically correct, but much of it is dated as of this writing. Some brands of equipment are largely ignored. I found this book "okay", but then I have been deep into this hobby for decades.
Don't buy this book if you need real information!.......2000-04-21
While this book boasts excellent print qualities, along with top notch photo reproduction, it lacks any real information of substance. If you are looking for a book to help you learn the ins and outs of medium format, keep looking. It will not help you with the intricacies of lighting, composing for medium format vs. 35mm, or any other "important" information for the neophyte medium format photographer. I was looking for this type of book, and I was sorely disappointed after reading this title in one evening. Please Mr. Ericksenn, try again.
Book Description

In this guide, the techniques that make medium format photography so popular with professionals are explained in language that even hobbyists can easily understand. All aspects of medium format photography are explored, including equipment selection, composition techniques, and the differences in images produced by single lens reflex and twin lens reflex medium format cameras. This is a great resource for beginners as well as those who wish to improve their medium format photography.

Absolute beginners book.......2005-10-07
I bought this book because I was a serious 35mm amateur photographer who wanted to move into medium format because of the increased quality. I was totally ignorant of the basics of medium format, such as the difference between 120 and 220, so anything I read was helpful. I agree that this is a book for absolute beginners. If you are interested in camera models and history and want a book to add to your photographic library in this category, then you will find this book useful. I really wanted a book with more artistic content, such as extensive discussion of composition in various medium formats, especially 6x6, but was disappointed. In hindsight, I would not buy this book. One would be better to study books of photographs by outstanding medium format photographers in order to enhance understanding of the creative aspects of the medium.
Very informative for a novice........2001-09-08
I read this book because I wanted to move from 35mm to medium format but had no knowledge of or background in it. I really found this book to be helpful to me. It explained the very basics of medium format, cameras, TLR, accessories, metering, etc. very clearly and in terms I could understand. For someone who doesn't have a clue and wants to learn more it really is a great book to begin with. I agree that anyone with a working knowledge of medium format would look for something more advanced, but, for the novice it's perfect.
a book for beginers in medium format.......2001-08-24
I've found the book is writen in a very simple terms. For beginers can be useful, but if you are not a beginer, you won't learn much thinks reading it. As a conclusion, if you want to buy a medium format camera and you don't know anything about it, you can buy this book, but if you are not a beginner, don't spend your money with this book.

Wildi is conservative but makes his point.......2001-06-24
I am a big Ernst Wildi fan! That said, some observations should be noted: Wildi writes lucidly, logically, and tries to teach the reader in every one of his works. His photography is excellent and he really does not hide the fact he is a Hasselblad guru! Perhaps, he assumes that some of his points that are written and diagrammed to demonstrate, are obvious to all readers, and does not go into great depth. Yes, I got it! People wanting more from Ernst on techniques should check out his book, "Achieving the Ultimate Image." These 2 works could have been combined into one; re-titled "The Ultimate Image in Medium Format" or similar.
More focus on Medium Format please!.......1999-08-15
Ernst Wildi's book was quite a disappointment to me, as the title made me believe, that it would be a competent appraisal of the different formats and a recommandation of fields of photography where the size of medium format would win the game. But after a couple of chapters concerned with different formats, cropping and camera types the rest is just an ordinary photography primer with really no news. Additionally the illustrations are often handdrawn and really not of the quality you would expect to find in a book like this.
I feel seriously misguided by the title and wonder if I dare order the other wellknown Ernst Wildi title on a specific medium format brand...

Book Description
From turn-of-the-century novelties and Depression-era distraction, through wartime comfort, to Hello Kitty and Jeff Koons, cuteness has thrived in the fertile soil of American modern-age media and pop culture. What is it about fluffy bunnies with bows, baby ducks splashing in puddles, kittens snuggled in baskets, and little lambs on their way to school? Happy Kitty Bunny Pony celebrates America's "cult of the cute" in all its campy, kitschy, ironic glory.
With more than 200 images from the print and advertising archives of the Charles S. Anderson Design Company, this collection is an amazingly rich testament to America's fascination with cute things. The hilarious commentary by Mystery Science Theater 3000 host Mike Nelson, spiked with fun and curious facts, bits of sarcasm, and dry and not-so-dry wit, is as surprising and bizarre as the images themselves. So go ahead and join the fun-everyone from art students to your grandma is already shouting the cult-of-the-cute battle cry: "Happy Kitty Bunny Pony!" AUTHOR BIO: The Charles S. Anderson Design Company is ranked by Graphis magazine as one of the world's 10 most influential design firms. Their clients include Ralph Lauren, Warner Brothers, Coca-Cola, Levi's, and Nike. Michael J. Nelson, an actor and writer, was the head writer and on-air host of the legendary television series Mystery Science Theater 3000. He is the author of Mike Nelson's Movie Megacheese, Mind Over Matters, and the novel Death Rat.

Funny and Handy.......2007-09-17
This is a funny book, but the humour for me is a bonus, I really bought the book to use for reference and inspiration.
It's super kitch photos are mixed up with some other cool & crazy pages of graphic design.
I just knew it.......2007-06-08
I picked it up, unknowing, thumbed through it for a minute or two, and thought "MST3K." But without the cleverness.
The lethally sweet pictures are cute (ever notice that "cute" is a four-letter word?) and added captions funny enough, for the first two pages. Maybe three. Then I started wondering, "OK, I got that joke - what's next?" There is no next, just the same joke again and again.
At one point I was hospitalized and on heavy painkillers. I tried to watch the Flintstones, but turned it off when I couldn't follow the plot. If you know someone in that state, for medical or recreational reasons, they'll experience all of the book's humor for the first time again and again. They'll love it. That's not me, though, at least not today.

Dry humor for the weiner joke masses........2007-01-30
Mike Nelson of MST3K fame was a better writer than a host. I liked him on MST3K, but he really made an imapct when he was crafting the jokes as opposed to delivering them. Here, we see his brilliant, wry humor in all its glory. This is a rip on every marketing image so sickly sweet that it makes you physically ill. I would recommend you do some Sudokus as well as other brain excercise first: An IQ of 115 or higher is recommended to catch the funniest bits he delivers. That could also explain why my wife lughed harder than I did. Hmm. Back to the Sudoku academy, I guess.
Not as sweet as it seems.......2007-01-17
Because of others' comments I checked this out from the library instead of rushing to buy it like I was tempted to do. The images are of course super cute, but I found the ironic comments to be annoying distractions, and the whole book is much more shallow and dissatisfying than I expected. If you're looking for a real book of advertising and pop culture iconography steer clear! Instead check out some of the books put out by Taschen like "1000 Extraordinary Objects: Colors by Taschen." Happy Kitty Bunny Pony is more on the level of teenage girls who like the sarcastic cuteness of Emily the Strange and Happy Bunny.
Pukey Sweet.......2007-01-05
Ok, I just have to say that this book is by far the cutest thing I have ever seen. It is very funny and a good converstaion piece for your coffee table. Lots of pictures to keep those "non-readers" happy and plenty of comedy throughout. Keep it up Pop Ink!
