Customer Reviews:
Interacting With Nature.......2007-01-10
This Revised and Expanded Edition of Hands-On Nature is an engaging how-to activity book--for children and for anyone looking to bring them before nature, whether at home, school, camp, playground, hiking, a workshop, or other pursuit. Here is a practical guide for the environmental enthusiast. Page after page it exhibits a wide range of detailed illustrations in black and white, many that appear as works of art. The text is well-written and easy to follow and understand with keywords that are highlighted in bold type, easily directing the attention of the reader to an order of valuable terms and particulars on nature. The book is divided into chapters, namely: Adaptations, Habitats, Cycles, Designs of Nature, and Earth and Sky, with related subjects like birds, insects, plants, flowers, streams, earth, deer, logs, and clouds. The chapters are organized into two sections, starting with an informational essay to introduce each chapter, followed by an activity and experiment segment that may include a brief script for a puppet show or play, and a suggested reading list. This book was made possible with the help of a large group of teachers, professionals, students, and volunteers. It should be included in every family's collection of books to read and share.
If you like Project Wild you will love this book.......1998-09-05
Any Environmental Educator or Scout Leader who has ever gone to a program like Geosphere, Project Wild, NatureQuest or Project Learning Tree will LOVE this book.
Everything is organized by lessons and activities that are coded to match certain skills like Predation, Plant Succession, etc.
I have used this book for years at Boy Scout Summer Camps and I know the American Camping Association recommends this book for anyone involved in teaching Environmental Skills & Nature at a camp setting.
Perhaps the only draw back is the plain colorless sketches of the book. A teacher would appreciate the book's content but I would not get this book for a kid. Having said that, this book is a great pick for any leader, summer camp, or school where teaching an understanding & appreciation of nature is a priority.

Exploring Pastel with Barry Watkin.......2006-08-16
Barry White has succeded in telling his reader, in a very understandable way, as much about pastels that one can learn from a book. He includes many examples of his wonderful work (usually to illustrate a point), as well as ample demonstrations (also illustrated, in a "step by step" style). His work itself is an inspiration.... just knowing that it's possible to do fairly detailed landscapes in pastel (that look like oil paintings) was exciting for me.
One of the best pastel books.......2003-08-02
It provides clear and simple instructions in using pastel to create beautiful paintings. Most of the instructions are focused on landscape paintings with a couple of flowers and still life. Basically, it is one of the best pastel books I ever had.

Book Description
Learning Journals in the K-8 Classroom is the first comprehensive presentation of how to use academic journals effectively for elementary-level instruction. The text outlines the theoretical foundations for using learning journals and provides step-by-step suggestions for implementing them in every content area and at all levels of elementary instruction.
Learning journals provide resources and support for reading aloud, independent reading, mini-lessons, cooperative study, individual research, workshops, and the portfolio system. The type of interactive writing students do in learning journals helps them explore complex ideas in the content areas, using their own strengths of analysis and response; the journals then become resources for future learning, group discussions, individual conferences, learning assessment, reports, and progress.
Four introductory chapters show teachers how to create their own journals, introduce journals to students, integrate them with cooperative study, and use them for assessment. Additional chapters focus on the individual curriculum areas of literature, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. The text includes sample entries from student journals at all grade levels and in every content area, and appendices of annotated resources to support journaling and interviews with teachers who use journals in their classrooms.
Customer Reviews:
Teacher Friendly, Very Rare and Valuable Resource.......2000-12-02
This text is a resource that can be used over and over. The insights provided and the teacher friendly applications have proven to be one of my most important learning tools in the classroom. Other books on this topic cannot compare with its intuitive organization as well as the ease of practical use in the classroom. I highly recommend this to any K-8 teacher - I can't imagine where my teaching would be right now without it.

Exploring Math with books kids love-- a must for teachers!.......1999-12-17
Finally a middle school level book that integrates the curriculum. It is full of ideas that can be put to immediate use in the classroom. Having the NCTM standards listed with every lesson is also benefical. I find myself planning more often with the Language Arts teacher to see how we can work together to integrate our subjects.

Customer Reviews:
Really, Don't Do It.......2007-06-27
This book was so funny for we culinary types. I really enjoyed reading it, and learning new and funny things about some of my favorite chefs.
What not to do in the kitchen.......2007-02-13
This is one of the funniest books, I have read. I have lent it to many friends and we have had a good laugh at many of the stories. It's nice to see that professional chefs can also have disasters in the kitchen.
Fun read!.......2006-12-14
This book will make you chuckle!
This book is broken down into short chapters, --- each chapter written by a famous Chef and his/her experiences in kitchen mishaps.
Fun read!
This just makes the rest of us feel better..........2006-10-12
This is a must have for home cooks, would-be chefs, and people who just love the kitchen. In this humorous collection of stories, many chefs that have no reached the pinnacle of their careers share tales and snippets of life that include moments they were less than perfect. How many of us have ruined a dish by putting too much salt in the pot, or burned a turkey (or served one raw)? Turns out those sins are mild compared to some of the things these gods of food have done.
So many of the stories are just funny, you'll find yourself laughing out loud.
Sometimes when you watch cooking shows, or eat at a 5 star restaurant, it's easy to be intimidated by Chefs that seem to have perfected this craft. But this book will remind you that they have their off days as well, and that the gods of cuisine are just as human as the rest of us.
Highly recommended for everyone. Even if you don't cook, or aren't a foodie, this book is just funny.
Mixed Plate.......2006-09-21
Some of the pieces in this book are really funny, such as a tale of what happened when a hollandaise delivery met up with LA rush hour traffic. Many remind the reader than even the greatest of chefs is still human. Some of the pieces will amaze you with chefs' creativity in the face of diaster (one chef, for example, stuck with a ruined wedding cake, calls in the dogs). Unfortunately, some of the pieces are just plain boring. In one, for example, the "disaster" is that the narrator gets yelled at for throwing away some onions. I'm sure it was painful to him, but it's just not that much fun to read. In total, I'm not sure the good parts of the book make it worth shelling out money for. I borrowed mine from the library.
