This volume, the most comprehensive work to date on Chinese film, explores the manifold dimensions of the subject and highlights areas overlooked in previous studies.
In the essays in this collection leading scholars take up issues and topics covering the entire range of Chinese cinema. Their cross-cultural engagements with individual films, accomplished with an acute sense of chronology and history, tackle questions of issues related to historiography, poetics, aesthetics, genres, and directorial styles; at the same time, they address the economics of film production and consumption as well as the cultural politics of globalization, identity, subjectivity, nationality, citizenship, and gender formation as embodied in filmic texts. They offer insightful, detailed analyses of films by such internationally renowned directors as Zhang Yimou, Hou Hsia-hsien, Ang Lee, Wong Kar-wai, Zhang Yuan, Jia Zhangke, Tsai Ming-liang, Lin Cheng-sheng, Jiang Wen, Ann Hui, Sylvia Chang, Wu Nianzhen, Eric Koo, and others.
Chinese-Language Film makes a significant contribution to international film studies. It will become required reading for all those, whether student, specialist, or general reader, who are interested in Chinese cinema and international film culture or concerned with questions of nationalism, transnationalism, globalization, and multiculturalism.

Extremely helpful.......2002-07-25
While trying to identify some slides that I shot during June of some wildflowers in Colorado, I tried to use Peterson's Field Guide to Rocky Mountain Wildflowers. I had a very difficult time trying to identify anything. I picked up Guennel's guide (for both prairie and mountain) and within minutes I had EVERY wildflower slide identified. I'd like to see more information about each plant, such as when it indicates 'poisonous' for the plant, is it for the whole plant, root, petals, ??? But the ease in identification more than makes up for the lack of additional info. I definately recommend this book.

As a botanist who loves hiking and flowers, I was thrilled to get the chance to "field test" this wonderful guide to Colorado's high mountains. It is organized by elevation so you can follow spring up higher as summer progresses. It clearly states the hike length, the terrain, the location, gives directions AND best of all - lists what flowers you will see! I found this book to be an extraordinary guide to the region and it helped me tailor my vacation and plan my hikes. The photos of the mountain scenery were very good and the close ups of the flowers were terrific. I think I actually bumped into the author on a hike (I recognized her from the photo in the back!). Terrific book!

Most of the hikes in this book are simple hikes as well, so it is great if you have children with you. The book also serves as a reference guide for the different flowers you will see on your hike. The book shows the best time of year to hike the particular trails in correspondence with when the flowers are in bloom. Nice book to have on hand.

I've taken a number of the hikes in this book and been very pleased. Very useful for wildflower photogs or anyone who enjoys nature. Directions and descriptions are easy to follow and accurate.

I grew up and live in the summer in a Colorado ghost town at 9,000 ft. altitude surrounded by 13,000 ft. mountains. This is the best guide for Colorado alpine flowers I have ever seen. Great illustrations, fine explanatory notes - a must have for alpine flower afficianados.

This book is just what I was looking for a reference book in the field and home. It has both photos and drawings of each plant. One plant per page and the pages are nicely grouped by flower color which is visible on the page edges as well. The indexes, as usual in nature books of this type, have both common name and Latin name of each plant. Included are black and white diagrams of leave types and flower head patterns with glossary. Each item listed has a synopsis of flowers, leaves, what"~ kind of immediate environment it grows in, "Life Zone(s)" i.e. foothills, alpine, etc., and flowering time.

I'd expected a series of wildflower pictures, scientific names and other factoids in these pages. I was pleasantly surprised to find each picture accompanied by a well-matched poem. The combination of good photography and verse makes this a very enjoyable work, exercising different areas of the reader's brain.

Excellent Introduction for new wildflower enthusiasts.......1998-04-12
This small book provides attractive color pictures of every wildflower that it covers. The first time or sometime enthusiast will enjoy this book much more than the more broadly focused Jaeger and Munz classics that have fewer color plates and devote most of their coverage to the Mohave Desert. 1998 has been an extraordinary spring wildflower year. I have attempted to use all three books and found that my success with this one was such that I was able to find and identify about 3/4 of the flowers in the book just from my trips to Borrego Springs, Mecca Road (Box Canyon), Joshua Tree and the Colorado River.

This book is filled with information on flowers and where they grow and the bloom times. The clear close up pictures of the flowers and leaves make it easier to identify them when I'm on hikes. And, the book is small and easy to carry in most pockets.

I got a lot of laughs from the book. The "facts" are not always true -- kind of like what you'd expect from a cocktail party flippant sort of reply. Great book for 2 truths and a lie or just for making the reader or other go "I wonder if..." and rush off to look up the information.

The Answers to the questions are wrong!! For Examples - they state the largest lake in the WORLD is Lk. Superior.. Nope, Caspian Sea. (Please look up the word lake!!)
Don't believe everything you read.......2002-10-29
This book is a fun collection of obscure "facts", but shouldn't be taken too seriously, as there are errors on almost every page. The Philco Predicta wasn't the first TV set made (it dates from 1958)... Those of us who watched Howdy Doody on NBC in 1950 will be surprised to hear that Captain Kangaroo was the first network TV kid show in 1954... Napoleon certainly didn't appoint Louis Pasteur to a committee to study food preservation for his invasion of Russia in 1812, since Pasteur was born in 1822... Nor is chi a letter of the Hebrew Alphabet.
My favorite entry is the one for the legendary Betsy Ross, alleged not only to have made the first American flag, but to have designed it (!), and to have been born with a full set of teeth in her mouth (!!).
