Book Description

The popular Mary Kay Andrews delivers a tasty holiday treat as she brings back the winning characters from Savannah Blues and Savannah Breeze for a little Southern cheer.

It's the week before Christmas, and antiques dealer Weezie Foley is in a frenzy to do up her shop for the Savannah historical district window decorating contest––which she intends to win. She throws herself into putting up a Graceland/Blue Christmas motif, with lots of tinsel, an aluminum tree, and all kinds of tacky retro stuff. The project takes up so much time that Weezie is ready to shoot herself with her glue gun by the time she's done, but the results are stunning. She's sure she's one–upped the owners of the trendy shop around the corner. But suddenly, things go missing from Weezie's display, and there seems to be a mysterious midnight visitor to her shop.

Still, Weezie has high hopes for the holiday––maybe in the form of an engagement ring from her chef boyfriend. But Daniel, always moody at the holidays, seems more distant than usual.

Throw in Weezie's decidedly odd family, a 1950s Christmas tree pin, and even a little help from the King himself, and maybe there will be a pocketful of miracles for Weezie this Christmas eve.

3 out of 5 stars I kept wanting to like it more than I did!.......2007-08-06

It grabbed me right from the start, then went sort of flat. Like I said in the title, I really did want to like it. This was my first book of hers, and will probably be my last. I like fluff, but this was too much fluff.

5 out of 5 stars Blue Christmas.......2007-07-24

As with all of Mary Kay Andrews books this one was a great page turner and read in one day. Can't wait until she writes another book as I have read all she has written up to date.

3 out of 5 stars Easy Read .......2007-06-09

This book was a really cute, easy read. I finished it in a day. Definetly a rainy day read!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not my favorite but a good little read.......2007-05-05

I have read all of MKA's books and really enjoyed her stories. This one was a little slow and silly at times but she does make you care about her characters. I would recomomend her other books first over this one.

3 out of 5 stars Predictable, but cute.......2007-04-05

I loved the characters from her previous two novels (Savannah Blues and Savannah Breeze) and thought this would be another great book expanding on those characters. While the characters were still great, the story lacked a little "ooompf". Weezy and BeBe were still the wonderful women from the previous novels, but their escapades weren't nearly as interesting. The "mystery" was quite weak, but hopefully the lack of a real ending will lead to another great novel about Weezy and BeBe. A very short novel (another disappointment), but not a short read as the story line sort of dragged.

5 out of 5 stars read this if you want smart southern fiction........2007-10-04

Southern fiction tends to be cliche. I enjoyed reading this mystery-romance. Funny, smart and best of all, it is well written. Characters are believable and Savannah culture of food antiques and parties is believable and fun.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better.......2007-08-06

I really enjoyed this author's book Hissy Fit. So I decided to read this book also. It was an okay read, but I will not suggest it to any of my friends. It took me forever to read. I usually read a book within 2-3 days, but this book took me almost a month. I could not get into it, and I found myself deciding to do other things beside read my latest purchase. The author spends a lot of time detailing Weezie's "finds." I was not interested in the furniture, so I skipped paragraph after paragraph. I'm not sure if I'll read any of her other books.

5 out of 5 stars fun!.......2007-07-07

This was the first book that I read by Mary Kay Andrews ~ I loved it!! Maybe because she is a "dumpster diver" and reading about Weezie's adventures really inspired me to be creative! Again, it is simply a fun book to read and it is very easy to get lost in the lives of the characters ~great for the imagination!!

5 out of 5 stars Love this book!.......2007-06-20

When I was reading this book I have to day it reminded me so much of what the true south is like. This book is roll in the floor funny!!! Yet it is also a mystery. I love Mary Kay Andrews.

4 out of 5 stars Dated, but the best of the Blues Series.......2007-07-23

The Savanna Syncopators is a primary source in Deborah DeSalvo's "The Language of The Blues: From Alcorub to Zuzu". After reading DeSalvo's work, I started to collect the primary sources listed in the back. The first one that I was able to collect, Savannah Syncopators, has been the best by far.

While some of Oliver's thinking is dated, the facts presented are very solid and far outweigh that material. I also have to say that Oliver's own work is far better than the other works in the Blues Series. Having read all four, the next best in the series would be "Blacks Whites and Blues". Again there are a few shortcomings in the thinking there, but that is more of a symptom of the year of publication than of the authors. If written today, the blues series would strongly benefit from some post-colonial analysis.

If I lost this book, I would gladly buy another one to replace it. Also, if you are interested in the Blues, I strongly recommend DeSalvo's work.

      5 out of 5 stars Sheila!.......2007-06-01

This is a fine publication about Savannah's historical jazz community. World famous musicians have passed through Savannah. These people have shared their experinces in print, from Louis Armstrong to Etta James. Savannah is a southern town with a lot of charm. The "Pretty Lady With the Dirty Face" is clean now in some ways. And all it's greatness is being put in print for everyone to enjoy.

Of course we know the south is the south, but black Savannahnians have always held their own. Places that I remember were mentioned in this book. I remember the Star Theater. I remember the Flamingo Lounge, a big beautiful pink building on Gwinnette Street. The old city auditorium is another place that I remember.

My brother Joseph Q. Johnson was a part of this. He played the saxaphone in the Beach High School band from 1954-1956. I can remember my bother marching along West Broad Street with the school band. I also remember him playing the sax in Bobby Dilworth's band. And he played in bands with some others like Claude Roberts and some I can't remember. My brother was a part of Savannah's jazz community. He left Savannah in 1961 and lived for a while in Washiington D.C. Joseph Johnson now resides in Newport News, Virginia. The book does not make mention of him. I don't see him on any pictures in the book. But as his sister, I feel obligated to let the world know, that my brother played the sax as well as the piano in several jazz bands in Savannah, Georgia. He was also a musician in the United States Marine Corp. Bigger and better things beckoned him to move on. He is now retired from the Board Of Education in the city of Newport, News Virginia.

5 out of 5 stars Evolution of Savannah Jazz.......2002-06-21

I loved this historical piece on the development of jazz in Savannah (that's Georgia USA ya'll). The text is well-documented. The author, an experienced researcher, had extensively searched the tomes of Savannah periodicals and dug up names, dates and events of yesterday - and interviewed knowledgable jazz aficionados. The pictures, posters, advertisements are absolutely incredible. This is a must for anyone interested in jazz, music, history - or even the social development of the beautiful lady called Savannah.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Platform for Parent/Child Discussion.......2003-01-24

This is the 2nd book in the series, and it is as wonderful as the first. Savannah Blue, the Great Dane, provides an insightful perspective on what it is like to be sick and to face scary things like doctors and poking thermometers. The book is gentle and comforting, with Savannah's questions, (such as "When you get sick do have to take icky medicine? Do you get a treat afterward?") providing the perfect chance to discuss difficult topics with your children. It makes me think back to when I hated visiting the dentist (especially for fluoride treatments) as a child, and my parents would promise to get me a strawberry milkshake afterward if I was brave.
However, the book would also be appropriate for discussing serious illnesses with your child. Savannah's child-like honesty could prove helpful in discussing the illness of a pet, friend, or relative.

Then her human suggests she write to Calla Roo, to keep in touch, & this is Savannah Blue's first letter.

DEAR CALLA ROO...LOVE, SAVANNAH BLUE is a little too sweet for me, although I enjoyed Sudie Rakusin's energetic illustrations.

          Book Description

Wollie Shelley, the plucky amateur sleuth Kirkus Reviews called “funny, brave, smart, and altogether the fetchingest crime heroine since the early Stephanie Plum,” returns to face suspect lovers and unlovable suspects in this hilarious sequel to Dating Dead Men.

Wollie Shelley is a greeting card artist struggling to keep afloat financially and to pursue—despite a series of recent disasters—the search for the love of her life. She reluctantly agrees to be a contestant on the reality television show Biological Clock. The show’s premise: Six eligible singles date each other, and the audience votes on which couple would make the best parents. Alas, Wollie isn’t having much luck finding a man she’d like to date “off the air,” much less father her child. As her own biological clock ticks away, Wollie gets caught up in a much more pressing demand on her time. Her friend Annika has vanished into thin air, and Wollie is convinced that she’s in grave danger.

When Wollie reports the disappearance to the Los Angeles Police Department, however, the detective assigned to the case seems more interested in dating Wollie than in finding her friend. So Wollie springs into action—and lands right in the middle of an FBI investigation into an international drug cartel. She soon finds herself being stalked by an assortment of threatening characters, including her fellow television contestants, who will stop at nothing to beat the clock.

With Dating Is Murder, Kozak delivers another sparkling treasure, a laugh-out-loud-funny, literate mystery for readers of Janet Evanovich and Sue Grafton and for Kozak’s own growing legion of fans.

This book is better than the first. I am really looking forward to the next book.

4 out of 5 stars better than the first in the series.......2007-08-23

"Dating is Murder" is a HUGE improvement over "Dating Dead Men". The behaviors of the characters were more believable (or easier to suspend disbelief for?), especially Wollie's. I had far fewer "huh, why on earth would they do that?" moments than I did while reading the first in the series (only one that I can actually put my finger on. What was with the deal with Detective Cziemanski???). I think the story is better, more clearly plotted, and Wollie's anxiety about Annika really drives the story forward. I do think the author seems to write female characters a bit better than men, especially Harley's love interests. They seem to be rather two-dimensional. The world Wollie inhabits is interesting and well-drawn and her friends are a lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars Frogs, Au Pairs, Babies, Reality TV and More.......2007-06-08

What a wondrous, unusual, complex and surprising book. I was carried along into Wollie's world, quite pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this tale. The characters were fun to spend time with, the frog-ish asides were interesting and provided depth to the story, the ending surprised me, and all in all, I enjoyed this world. I will be backtracking to read Kozak's first novel out of order, although I see that readers aren't quite as crazy about it. But I'll try it anyway, since I enjoyed this one so much.

5 out of 5 stars FUNNY and wonderful!.......2007-05-23

I really liked Ms. Kozak's first book (Dating Dead Men), but this one is ever better. I love the heroine, the hero is great. And this is one of the funniest books I have ever read. Ms. Kozak's humor is fresh and creatives and have me laughing hard.

5 out of 5 stars Frantic in L.A>.......2006-02-24

Harley Jane Kozak gives us a clever plot, fast action, and, best of all, lots of good laughs in this second book of hers. Besides lovable Wollie, the book is packed with quirky characters and comical situations. As soon as you fall under good gal Wollie's spell, you find yourself rooting for her as she tries to cope with the likes of the LAPD, or SMC, and the other difficulties of life in L.A. As she tries to make a living with her art work and a role in a reality TV show, she is also compelled to search for her missing math tutor, Annika, even more mysterious than mathematics itself, which baffles Wollie. Forget all about Doc, Wollie's love of the previous book! Now it's Simon, a new mystery man.

            Book Description

From the pen of Margaret L. Carter..."When I first read Dracula at the age of twelve, my spontaneous reaction was to wonder how the vampire saw the events in which he was portrayed as the villain. One of my first stories, at age thirteen, was a 33-page, single-spaced saga from the viewpoint of a man in the process of transforming into a vampire. I've always found the non-human perspective, as well as relationships between human and non-human persons, fascinating.

"The tales in this collection span the past ten years of my writing career. Most can be described as romances, and all involve love and passion in some form. Here you will encounter vampires, elves, ghosts, and at least one human-monster hybrid. The vampire stories in the first half of the book belong to an ongoing series based on 'Vanishing Breed,' a story by my husband in my first anthology, Curse of the Undead (1970). 'Vanishing Breed' (which also appears in Tomorrow Sucks, edited by Greg Cox, still in print) postulates that the creatures we know as vampires belong to an alien species secretly living among us. You can get better acquainted with them in my novels, Dark Changeling, Sealed in Blood, and Crimson Dreams, and two novellas, 'Night Flight' and 'Tall, Dark, and Deadly' (which stars Claude from 'Voice from the Void').

            Book Description

For the first time ever, there are female law partners, vice presidents, head chefs, and account executives in their early thirties, and women in their twenties are heading up the ladder right behind them. While working women have always struggled to balance life inside and outside the workplace, this generation is facing a new set of challenges. Midlife Crisis at 30 reveals that many twenty- and thirty-something women have distorted well-intentioned empowerment messages, and they're blaming themselves when they fail to overcome the very real obstacles that still exist, despite the unprecedented workplace opportunities they inherited. Raised to believe that they could 'have it all' in every part of their lives, these young women are exhausted, confused, and desperate to find the middle ground where they can claim and enjoy full, well-rounded lives before it is too late. Midlife Crisis at 30 provides compassionate and street-smart guidance on how to avoid panic and avert a meltdown. Through the candid and revealing stories of women who have been there, it delves into the social and psychological costs of the current crisis and shows how they affect both life at work and relationships with family, with friends, and with men. Taking on the all-important question, 'Where do we go from here?' it presents pragmatic strategies and realistic suggestions from dozens of famous and ordinary women who have successfully solved the work/life/love puzzle. Feisty, fun, and totally on-target, Midlife Crisis at 30 gives women the guidance they crave from the ultimate Dream Team of mentors.

4 out of 5 stars 30 is the New 50..........2007-09-03

My daughter, not yet 26, suggested that her Mom, not yet 55, should read the book to understand some of her concerns and issues. I laughed when she said the words "mid life crisis", although now that I think back nearly 3 decades and recall that at 26, I was seriously questioning my life's path also.

I raced through the book in one weekend as if it were a homework assignment. The authors struck a chord with their comments on the lessons that we Baby Boomer moms taught our daughters: "Anything is Possible", "You Can Have it All", "Waiting to Marry is the Divorce Insurance Policy", etc. We feminists burned our bras, rallied for change in the corporation, assaulted the glass ceiling, brought home the bacon and fried it up in the pan.

But not all of us had it all, and the unachievable goal of having a Perfect Life has created Alpha Moms, Martha Stewart-esque Domestic Goddesses, pervasive anxiety, and, according to the authors, melt-down among this striving generation. Achieving education, career, marriage, and children doesn't happen for everyone at the right time in a strictly linear fashion (or at all).

Part One of the book defines why this generation is so stressed, redefines the new glass ceiling, discusses how "happily ever after" needs to be revised, and describes how all of this change is affecting men. This section of the book was most useful and interesting to me, and can best be summed up by "each woman will have her own definition of having it all".

Part Two offered profiles of successful women at 30 and later in life, with the suggestion that their experiences could be used as a sort of virtual mentoring. The subjects of the profiles were many high-achieving women in medicine, publishing, entertainment, politics, law and business. While the stories of each woman's journey through career, marriage and children (or the decision to not have children) were interesting, laudable and inspirational, they didn't seem particularly applicable to the typical middle-class young woman. There just isn't enough room at the top for every striving young woman to find a place there.

The value of this book will be its contribution to the ongoing dialogue that young women need to have among themselves, with their spouses and bosses, (and even with their Baby boomer moms...), to help them chart a course to success and happiness through the years that are filled with challenges and choices.

            3 out of 5 stars OK.......2007-06-15

I read 3-4 chapters. I felt a lot of the so-called problems that they were describing were very stereotypical "white upper middle class" ones. The writers are privileged people who indeed have good choices in life. Balancing work, career, when to have kids, etc affects all socio-economic groups, but maybe it was the tone they were taking. If you take a high-powered job, there will be costs to your family life, etc. I stopped reading because I grew impatient with the writing. Did they intend to identify the real problems later on? What about solutions? Moreover, the book sounded as though it was written for a college class. Maybe there were gems later on in the book, but I put it down because I was in fact a bit bored. I had heard all of this before.

5 out of 5 stars Wow - Has the Pressure Cooker Ever Amplified!!.......2006-05-31

30 is the new benchmark of where are you in life. This places enormous pressure on people as young as 17 or 18 to get into gear before they even know who they are. With the average post-secondary graduating age around 22 ... that is less than a decade for women (more pressure than men) to begin having something to show for themselves. Life can be navigated but there are factors beyond one's control. No wonder the rat race is so compelling to teenagers.... you are behind before you even get started. Isn't life something to enjoy at least some of the time. Excellent analysis of why the world (at least in the West) has only gotten more unrealistic and disregarded the need for young people to just be happy some of the time that they are alive and well.

3 out of 5 stars Good book if baby-making is your main goal in life........2006-04-11

This book is for women who have or want to have children. Period. I am 29 years old, and do not hear a biological clock ticking. In fact, the older I get, the less I want children. I knew the book would touch on motherhood, but I was hoping it wasn't the main drive of the book. Instead I read page after page of women whining about how to juggle a career and a family. If that is something you're struggling with, then by all means, get this book. If you're not thinking about motherhood, and especially if you are child-free by choice, don't waste your time.

I loved this book, but the title is really misleading. Makes it sound like a self-help book and I really don't think it is. A friend recommended this otherwise I probably wouldn't have picked it up based on the title.

Provided a lot of interesting perspectives on the struggles both women AND men go through in our society when trying to maintain a work/life balance. Doesn't really provide any guidance, but does make you realize that this is a social problem, not just a personal problem. I've recommended it to many friends.
