Book Description
The first three decades of the sixteenth century represent, visually and intellectually, the most exciting phase of the Renaissance in Venice—when Giorgione and the young Titian, together with Sebastiano del Piombo, Palma Vecchio, and others, were working alongside the older master Giovanni Bellini. This beautiful book presents an innovative survey of sixty Venetian Renaissance paintings of the caliber of Bellini and Titian’s Feast of the Gods in Washington and Giorgione’s Laura and Three Philosophers in Vienna.
Unlike previous surveys of the period, this book refrains from dividing up the artists represented and instead explores the interrelationships between them. Through a series of thematic sections, the authors trace the rise of secular subjects—pastoral landscapes, female nudes, and romantic portraits—and the transformation of religious ones as well as innovations in style and technique. Cutting across genres, the book also focuses on the overarching themes of music, love, and time.
Featuring essays by leading scholars, detailed entries on some of the most renowned pictures of sixteenth-century Italy, and revealing technical information, Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, and the Renaissance of Venetian Painting is an essential volume to own.

The Renaissance at its finest........2007-01-11
A must for the student and lover of the Renaissance and Venice in particular.
High water mark of renaissance painting.......2006-07-29
This remarkable show (and catalogue) is a summary of Venetian painting from 1500 to 1530, allowing a side by side comparison of the work of Bellini, Giorgione, and Titian in what was one of Venice's astonishing high water marks of artistic creativity.
Once you have been bitten by the bug, these paintings are with you for good. Seeing this work firsthand, one can't help be seduced by the ravishing, luminous beauty light and layers of glazing that makes these paintings unique. The stillness in some of these works suggest the real subject here is light and color -- something these Venetians seem to have captured like no other group of artists.
The reproductions in the catalogue are quite good, and there are a very generous amount of close detail shots of the paintings too -- something particularly useful in illustrating the intricacy of detail in Giorgione's work. The essays are interesting, but my favorite is one I almost missed after the technical photographs of xrays in the back: an essay which describes how the Venetian painters were at a remarkable crossroads of shared experimentation in color including glassmakers, creators of fabric dyes, and other tradesmen that contributed to a new world of color effects in paint. For example the painters would use finely ground glass mixed into the oils to give the glazes a more bright, refractory quality.
This is a captivating show and a great catalogue to accompany it.

Book Description
Katherine Crawford Luber examines twenty-five paintings by the German artist in an effort to reevaluate his relationship to contemporary Italian art and his status as a painter. Luber explains how DÜrer appropriated Venetian techniques and suggests that the artist was engaged in the exploration of an atmospheric, coloristic perspective. She argues that this exploration unifies DÜrer's work and necessitates a reassessment of the critical division between his painted and graphic work.

Book Description
This up-to-date, well-illustrated, and thoughtful introduction to the life and works of one of the giants of Western Painting also surveys the golden age of Venetian Painting from Giovanni Bellini to Veronese and its place in the history of Western art. Bruce Cole, Distinguished Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University and author of numerous books on Italian Renaissance art, begins with the life and work of Giovanni Bellini, the principal founder of Venetian Renaissance painting. He continues with the paintings of Giorgione and the young Titian whose work embodied the new Venetian style. Cole discusses and explains all of Titian's major works--portraits, religious paintings, and nudes--from various points of view and shows how Venetian painting of this period differed from painting in Florence and elsewhere in Italy and became a distinct and fully-developed style of its own.
Customer Reviews:
Masterful Introduction to Titian.......1998-12-15
Bruce Cole, the respected historian of Renaissance Italian art, has brought forth yet another highly compelling book, this time illuminating the achievements of the great Venetian painter, Titian. Cole, author of more than 10 books and a connoisseur of the highest order, offers clear and interesting commentary on the style of one of the masters of the Italian Renaissance. By placing Titian in the general context of Western art and the specific context of the golden age of Venetian painting, Cole makes Titian's achievements shine through his discussions of Titian's portraits, religious paintings and nudes. He shows how Venetian style differs from that in other parts of Italy, especially Florence, and how it grew and developed in its distinctive way. Cole explores Titian's contributions to portraiture, his sophisticated use of mythology, the question of drawing in Venetian painting, Titian's use of color, and the artists he influenced.
This book is an elegant and engaging introduction to Titian; it is full of fascinating information and observations not only about Titian but about his times. Cole's explanations of Titian's great works are lucid, sensible, and accessible to general readers and scholars alike. Definitely worth a close look. It is beautifully printed with luscious reproductions. Those in color are reproduced with great fidelity.
Book Description
The paintings produced in Venice during the Renaissance include some of the most visually exciting works in the whole of Western art. This handsome book surveys painting in Renaissance Venice from Bellini to Titian to Tintoretto and sets the art against the political, social, and religious currents of the time.
Book Description
Ludovico Dolce's Dialogo della pittura first appeared in Venice in 1557. L'Aretino, by which the work is known today, consists of a three-part dialogue between two Venetians, Aretino and Fabrini, on the particular merits of works of art and artists, including Michaelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello. It is based largely on Aretino's letters.
The edition is presented in the original Italian with English facing-page translation.
This study of early art criticism serves to reveal something of how aesthetics were judged based on classical sources (especially Aristotle) and contemporary writers like Vasari.
Book Description
This study aims to clarify Venetian Quattrocento Orientalism, which affected Durer and thus Northern Europe, and to define the sources and practitioners of its Oriental motifs.
At the end of the fifteenth century a large number of paintings were produced in Venice that depict exotic animals and figures set against the backdrop of Oriental architecture.
It was Europe's earliest attempt to portray Muslims in a Muslim habitat, but it was more than a vague and ill-informed evocation of the East. Realistic in many of their details, these Orientalist pictures reflect the Serenissima's political and mercantile links with the fifteenth century Islamic Empires of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Book Description
In the first contemporary single-volume survey of the three arts of Venice—painting, sculpture, and architecture—Norbert Huse and Wolfgang Wolters offer an important counterbalance to the traditional orientation toward painting as the city's preeminent art by focusing on architecture as the essential Venetian art. They begin their study in 1460, when Venice was one of the key powers of Italy, and end with the death of Tintoretto in 1594, a period of waning international power. In the process, they define the distinctly Venetian terms by which the city and its culture should be understood. With over three hundred illustrations and an exhaustive bibliography, this volume makes an impressive contribution to art historical scholarship.
"The historical aspect of this book is splendid, but where it excels is in its fearless and thought-provoking critical judgements. . . . it will lead both beginners and experts to new joys."—David Ekserdjian, Times Literary Supplement

Customer Reviews:
Your guide.......2006-12-19
This superhero guidebook is brought to you in first person narrative by 'Dr. Metropolis'. You're given a breakdown into the 8 power classes of superheroes (Flight, Super Strength, Psionic, Magus, Invulnerability, Super Speed, Transmutation, Energy Projecting, and Crimefighter) as established by the fictional Bureau of Meta Human Affairs. The Dr teaches you how to pose correctly, establish your headquarters, choose a costume, find a sidekick, join a league/team, and choose your archenemy with the help of quizzes and personality establishments. You also get a bonus chapter on the possibility of turning evil/villainous.
This is a better detailed book than some others and filled with humorous lines throughout. The writing style in first person is quite good and I kept imagining John "J. Peterman" O'Hurley as the narrator's "voice". It adds to the book and you can imagine the sideblock helpful hints being voiced by John Ratzenberger or Kelsey Grammer. A vivid book for one with imagination. Possibly the best "How to be a superhero" book out there. The art could have been better though.
The Greatness is Almost All Potential.......2006-11-14
With an exciting premise, and with other hilarious similar books, "Government Training Manual for New Heroes" and "How to be a Villian" I had high hopes for this book.
I was a bit disapointed to be frank. The quizes weren't very clever and the jokes rapidly staled. I'd recommend one of the other books... (but in my superhero obsession, I'm still not giving this away...)
Jokes from all quarters.......2006-04-01
The best thing about HOW TO BE A SUPERHERO is its refusal to settle for a single type of joke. Sometimes it's a business book, dedicated to helping superheroes refine their evil-battling business plans and making cost-effective additions to the home (or secret lair). Sometimes it's a self-help book with suggestions for those who don't feel as "super" as they used to. Sometimes it's a set of gags for comic book insiders, taking sly potshots at WATCHMEN and other classics. Sometimes it's a mock Zagat's guide, with reviews of supervillains based on customers' "ratings." And then there are just plenty of finely tuned costume-based cracks (which I won't repeat for fear of spoilage). Dr. Metropolis (not his real name, I assume) isn't afraid to dip into the erudite or the vulgar for a joke, but he never strays far from the heart of the matter: that the whole concept of superheroes is hilarious if you don't take it too seriously.
Needs better illustrations!.......2006-03-24
Book is kinda funny, but could have seriously benefitted from the attentions of a better illustrator. The gag just get's old without some more exciting visual support. *yawn*
An Invaluable Aid To The New Enemy of Evil.......2006-02-24
Cosmic Guy, Paragon of Power, my superhero mentor recomended this book to me shortly after careless use of esoteric knowledge turned me into the Avatar of an Ancient Egyptian Goddess. Doctor Metropolis' Guide helped me find my feet in the high rolling, fast moving world of super-crime fighting and I heartily recommend it to the newly super-empowered.
The uninitiated might find the chapters on name creation, costuming, headquarter seeking and hooking up with your very own archnemesis a bit of a giggle but these are things you absolutely *must* know if you're to get ahead in the demanding field of super-crime fighting.
