    Book Description

The Arte Povera movement, similar to other movements of its time such as Conceptual Art and Process Art, brought about a radical redefinition of art itself, and provided an alternative to the increasingly hegemonic art trends of the day. Arte Povera: In Collection examines a significant nucleus of historical works of the Arte Povera movement from three important collections: the Museum of Contemporary Art Castello di Rivoli, the Galleria d'arte Moderna in Turin, and the recent acquisitions of the Fondazione CRT in Turin. Included here are 90 works by the leading protagonists of the Arte Povera movement: Giovanni Anselmo, Alighiero Boetti, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Luciano Fabro, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Marisa Merz, Giulio Paolini, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, and Gilberto Zorio. The book focuses on these artists' legendary works from the 60s and 70s, but also includes some recent work from each artist. In addition, the book features new, unpublished essays by each of the artists--except for the deceased Boetti--as well as historical texts by major art critics Tommaso Trini, Harold Szeemann, Jean Christophe Amman, and of course Germano Celant, who coined the term ''Arte Povera'' in 1967.

    Book Description

Which is more important, the coffee you drink or the cup you drink it from? The choice is a difficult one for any aesthete to make, and it is only highlighted and intensified by famed Italian coffeemaker illycaff , which, since 1933, has been producing one of the world's greatest espressos, and which, since 1992, has been commissioning limited-edition coffee cup designs from internationally renowned and emerging artists, musicians, and filmmakers. If the story of the coffee begins with Francesco Illy in Trieste, the story of the cup begins in 1990 with architect and engineer Matteo Thun, who designed a white espresso cup to the exacting specifications of the Illy family. The volume and diameter had to be just so, the rim had to accept resting lips in a most practical manner, and the all-important bowl at the bottom of the cup had to conserve heat effectively. Once the prototype was approved, the family set about having it transformed with original work by the likes of Sandro Chia, Nam June Paik, James Rosenquist, Robert Rauschenberg, David Byrne, Francis Ford Coppola, Joseph Kosuth, Jeff Koons, Marina Abramovic, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Michel Comte, Jannis Kounellis, and Louise Bourgeois. Good to the last drop--unless coffee isn't your cup of tea.

4 out of 5 stars A must for any ILLY COLLECTION fan........2005-10-03

Illy to some is the best coffee in the world, I can't say that since I have not tasted them all but I do love Illy, especially their espresso pods, but Illy is more than just coffee, they represent the most advanced and yet the most simple of pleasures... and their cup embodies that. This book is all about that, It covers the creation and a good decade's worth of artisitic varatations on the Illy cup.

I have been bitten by the Illy Collection bug and own a few of the sets, it's nice to have this book as a guide to the "expensive" past. The only problem is that the collection is only through 2003, so it is missing the 2004/2005 cups. Espresso has never been so stylish!

                  Book Description

Having made a name for himself in the Roman art scene of the early 1960s, Jannis Kounellis resurfaced, with extraordinary intuition and creative force, in the Arte Povera movement--the first Italian art movement to be recognized on an international level. Using materials that were initially considered unusual, such as wool, coal, live animals, plants, and theatrical sets, and endowed with a keen sixth sense, Kounellis worked to eliminated the ideological boundary that separates life from art, ethics from aesthetics, creation from production, the social and the political from the individual and the anarchic. Kounellis's intense artistic odyssey, his more than four decades of fervent and impassioned activity, is here richly illustrated on the occasion of his first large-scale exhibition in Belgium.

                        Book Description

To think of Egypt is to summon up images of pyramids, temples, and tombs. Perhaps the palm-fringed Nile springs to mind, or the exquisite Islamic monuments of medieval Cairo, or even the overgrown mega-city of today.
Yet Egypt is, before all things, desert. Were it not for the Nile, this immense territory in the east of the Sahara would be perhaps the hottest, driest wasteland in the world. In this solitude, vegetation is scarce and animal life scarcer. The life of the people of Egypt has always taken place against the backdrop of this contrast between fertile land and the desert.

Machiavelli would feel at home in industry today. You don't need a birthright to be a modern prince--just an impulsive ruthlessness such as he described four centuries ago while trying to get back into the good graces of a Medici nobleman. A clever guy like him could really go places. Stanley Bing, a columnist for Fortune, is also a clever guy. In real life he has another name and works for a media company (a very, very clever person could probably patch together the clues he offers and figure out the company, if not the actual person), and as such he's been our spy behind corporate lines since he first started writing for Esquire back in 1984. In What Would Machiavelli Do? Bing gleefully offers hard-boiled Machiavellian advice about whom to fire in a downsizing (consultants first, secretaries last), how to make employees love you ("Give them perks.... When they're spending your money, you own them"), and why it's important that you also kick ass (one of the ways: "cutting them off curtly when they speak") and take names (so people know you'll not only hurt them, you'll also go after their friends). The overriding lesson of this book is always to love yourself, never apologize for anything you do, and when all else fails, recognize that the truth is flexible, and so can be bent any way you want. What makes all this amorality funny is that Bing plays it straight, putting his ruthless advice into an easily digestible how-to format. Sometimes the only way you can tell it's satire is when he mixes the musings of Adolf Hitler and Pol Pot in with those of modern business figures such as former Sunbeam CEO "Chainsaw" Al Dunlap. Firing people, killing people--same rules, different game. --Lou Schuler

What Would Machiavelli Do? Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars It pays to be bad --- or does it?.......2007-10-02

I enjoyed this short read. It's funny. While we read what, in the opinion of the author, Machiavelli would do in the course of most all business situations, he ends the book saying, "But evil does have its limitations, ones that even the biggest, baddest Machiavellis around should keep in mind. That may be the very best --- and most useful--- lesson of all."

So one is left having to decide for himself how far he wants to take his Machiavellian ways. The author leaves it to the reader to make that decision.

You get no real answers in the book. It's not really a book of instruction. But there's a lot of truth. And, I think, a few lessons. I'm a bit surprised Leona Helmsley wasn't given as an example. Surely, the Queen of Mean deserves a place in a book of this sort.

I saw one major flaw in the author's take on what Machiavelli would do, however. Yes, he may have done everything the author claims he would have done. But he would have done one more thing. He would have appeared to do the opposite. That's the key to being a true Maciavellian.

5 out of 5 stars Stress relief using sarcasm and humor........2007-09-25

What Would Machiavelli Do? The Ends Justify the Meanness is a is full of sarcastic humor that anyone who has had a "bad" boss can identify with 100%. Stanley Bing describes the many characteristics of tyrant and/or mean bosses with humor and sarcasm. So much is true and easily identifiable. Very fun book to read. Will help relieve any work stress you may have. I recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars The Truth Hurts.......2007-06-08

On the eve of completing my first decade in the business world, I came across this book. Having read Machiavelli's "The Prince" in high school, I picked it up with great zeal and hopes that the master would be made intelligible to me. What ensued was the funniest, and unfortunately accurate, descriptions of corporate life I have read to date. I laughed out loud every time I picked it up.

Bing does an amazing job of faithfully interpreting the lessons of "The Master", and updating them with anecdotes from modern corporate life. And his ability to walk a frighteningly thin line between truth and sarcasm leaves the reader wandering how much to take to heart.

Young manager? Old veteran? Either way recommend this book both as a vignette of how bad it can be, and as a release valve for how funny it is when we take ourselves too seriously.

                        4 out of 5 stars funny.......2007-03-27

I laughed, hard. And gave the book to my very good friend who always had lots of bloodsuckers around him. Believe it or not but he learned a lesson and quickly weeded out the ones that did not offer anything in exchange. I don't think this was the intent of the book but it made me (and evidently the friend of mine) to think about things in a new context. Thanks Mr. Bing! Another great one from you.

5 out of 5 stars Irresponsibly Vicious - Did I Say That? I Meant, "Humorous".......2007-02-25

Your time is valuable, so I'll try to make this review brief.

                        - "WWMD" is not a self-help book, so don't take it too seriously. If you did, you'd quickly become a reclusive success, incarcerated, or both. Try to resist the urge when it comes upon you.

                        - This is a cautionary tale about the lack of ethics for which we all love the business world and Fox News stories thereof. One reason I'd recommend this book: you might actually want to admit to having read it while standing behind your overflowing gin and tonic. That's much better than admitting to having watched Fox News.

                        - Above all, "WWMD" is funny. Much funnier, in fact, than "WMD", and not intended to be a stuttering rendition of the latter. The anecdote about Vanilla Ice alone is worth the price of admission.

Accept no substitutes. Buy it already.

                        Book Description

Two business classics, or one business classic and his new book, or two business books - however you want to describe it - here is Stanley Bing at his best - giving you the ying and the yang of the business world. If What Would Machiavelli Do? was the meanest business book in recent history - Throwing the Elephant provides the yang to that yin.The focus of What Would Machiavelli Do? is on what works and how to get it done. Machiavellians may not get to heaven, but on earth they have a significant edge over the competition. The goal is to learn how to approach problems in a manner that is at once creative, geared toward achieving financial success, and refreshingly amoral.Throwing the Elephant: Zen and the Art of Managing Up artfully, clearly, and concisely provides a thorough grounding in the Zen Buddhist attitude you will need in order to move forward and control the people you work for. This book guarantees personal enlightenment while providing literally dozens of helpful, specific exercises and solutions to the most common problems of professional life.
