Book Description

Magnificent collection of handsome plates, meticulously reproduced from rare portfolio by Art Nouveau master that illustrated the application of animal forms in decorative art. Not only traditional, appealing shapes of graceful swans, peacocks and dolphins, but also finely detailed depictions of creatures seldom associated with beauty and ornamentation: bats, mice, lizards, and insects.

5 out of 5 stars Review of The Complete Guide to Beading Techniques.......2007-03-09

I found this book to be very helpfull. I am a beader and it was helpfull to go back and review techniques and ro learn some new ones. I think this book will be very helpfull to new beaders and other beaders.

1 out of 5 stars WASTE OF MONEY.......2006-12-31

After reading other reviews I couldn't wait to receive this book and try some new techniques. I was VERY disappointed with the instructions -- there is no way I could complete even an "easy" sample project. The instructions were sooooo basic that they were incomplete. This is definitely NOT a book for beginners.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-10-13

Personally I found this book rather dissapointing. The instructions are very perfunctory and often incomplete. Better instructions on most of the included tecjniques are available free on the web with a bit of searching. It is an interesting book to read but don't expect too much practical help.

5 out of 5 stars Best beading guide ever.......2006-05-02

This is the most complete guide to beading techniques I've ever seen. It covers everything you could possibly want to do with beads, especially seed beads. It covers everything from beadweaving (peyote, brick, herringbone, netting, etc. stitches) to knitting, crocheting, and tatting with beads, to wire work, to bead embroidery. The instructions are wonderfully clear and well-illustrated. There are 2-3 projects to make with each technique, including a small sampler project to get your feet wet. The book is also an invaluable resource for tips and tricks and information on beads and beading.

This is not a very good book for the rawest beginner, nor does it cover the basics of actual knitting or crocheting (but you can easily find basic knitting and crochet stitch directions online or in other books). But if you've had some experience with beading, this book is great, and it will take you to the most advanced beading stages. I'm an intermediate/advanced beader, and am constantly finding new information in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Titled appropriately.......2006-03-13

The book is wonderful. The illustrations on how to do the various stitches are enlarged enough to easily see what's going on. You don't need to puzzle out stuff. Besides the size of the illustrations, they are clear cut with each step having its own picture along with clear written out instructions.

As the title said, its complete. All of the techniques I could think of are in there, plus some I never heard about.

With all of the techniques shown, there are very well written and diagramed instructions, a sample to do to try the technique, and a project that uses that techniqe. There is even a sampler project using all of the samples of each technique at the end.

The photographs are beautiful. The projects they depict are bold, vibrant, and useful at the same time. The pictures of bead crafts that are show as examples of what can be done with beads are stunning.

Besides all this, the section where the tools and wares of beading are mentioned is good. This section also has a how to do basic beading stitches section as well - including the looom.

The instructions begin with the basics: how to light the torch, wind and cool the bead, and shape the glass into barrels, cones, and discs. As beadmakers' skills develop, they can expand their horizons by experimenting with enamel; using mica dust to form an iridescent sheen; and applying silver, gold, and copper leaf to layers of glass. The most advanced projects are truly remarkable, from floral and sculptural beads to beads that encase images of stars, rainbows, and faces. A Selection of the Crafters Choice Book Club.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars I echo the above reviewer..........2002-04-09

This book explains knotting fairly well. But as a beginner beader, I found the rest of the instructions confusing and incomplete. I ended up going out and buying the Klutz book (you know, the ones usually found in the Children's section) to beading, which was able to explain things like attaching clasps and making wire loops and the like. It won't get you very far beyond the basics, but at least it gets that far.

2 out of 5 stars From a novice beader.......2000-02-21

I found this book a little skimpy for the price. As a novice, I found a lot of information that was useful but still didn't feel ready to start a project. The glossary of "standard terminology" was exactly 11 items, including the information that a bracelet is 7" long and goes on your wrist. In a book only 44 pages long, I think there is more important information to include.

I think you'd be better of surfing the web for instructions.

That said, there were some nice illustrations of the standard tools and clasps, etc. Overall, this book was useful but in no way complete.

3 out of 5 stars Bought for a First Attempt at Beading.......2000-02-11

As a novice, I found the knotting portion of the book clear enough, but there wasn't enough information on attaching clasps - I had to purchase a book by another author.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Too many duplications in this book.......2001-12-14

This book did not meet my needs at all. They claim to have all these listings and many of them are duplicates. You'd be better off buying the magazines and getting your sources from them. I do not recommend this book and would not buy future editions.

1 out of 5 stars Helpful... but definitely not "complete"..........2001-05-26

Okay, so call me picky. When someone calls a book "complete" I expect them to at least put a disclaimer somewhere visible that says "NEARLY complete". Maybe this book should have been titled "The Nearly Complete Work-In-Progress Bead Resource Book".

While I realize that stores do come and go in this industry, I have found quite a few stores (six to be exact, and counting) in the San Diego area that are not in this book... wonderful stores with TONS of beads that have been in business many years in the same location... yet... they are not included in the "The Complete Bead Resource Book".

If you're looking for an all-around general listing of bead resources, it would be way cheaper to search the internet, or your local yellow pages.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this Book!.......2000-06-22

When I was in high school I bought this book at Disneyland, and read it from cover to cover on the plane-ride back. It's absolutely the funniest, most memorable book I've ever read, and even now, 7 years later I still share anecdotes with my friends, such as "How to take your vest off without taking of your jacket", "Fooling the 3-card Monty", and various other tricks and stories.

I too have lent this book out to my "friends" and have never had it returned to me. It's really a shame the book is out of print, because I really wanted to buy it all over again.

5 out of 5 stars Don't loan this one out!.......1998-06-15

If you find a copy of this book, BUY IT! If you own a copy of this book, don't loan it out. It will not return to you. (If you borrowed this book from me, I want it back.) This book is fun, enlightening and educational.

3 out of 5 stars Look like a professional con artist........1997-11-06

Harry Anderson is one of my favorite magicians. His style and presentation are outstanding. It's a shame that this is the only book he's written. This book starts out showing you some fabulous cons you can pull on people. The first 92 pages teach you exactly what the book says. Unfortunately, the last 70 pages are about "Games you can't win" and tell you all about casinos and carny scams. It's a shame that the book starts out so good, then fizzles like it does. It's still worth the money and will make you look quite sly around your friends.

As opposed to offering up typical magic tricks, this hilarious collection of scams, swindles, bets, and stunts features everyday objects and requires no special skills—just nerve. Some of the scams presented include how to drink from a champagne bottle without opening it, guess the date on a coin as it spins on the table, and pull a 10-dollar bill out from under a beer bottle without touching or knocking over the bottle. This amusing guide claims that a cheater, armed with the right skills, always wins and provides a crash course in conning at cards, pool, bets, and pretty much any activity where a sucker can be cornered into taking a chance.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-09-07

I first read "Games You Can't Lose" by Harry Anderson over a decade ago. This book sparked my interest in gambling and betting (maybe not a good thing...). That having been said, "Games You Can't Lose" is an amusing little overview of games of chance which is chock full of proposition bets and tricks that would work perfectly at the local tavern to win you a couple of drinks. Anderson has amusing games, such as playing poker by picking the cards you want right out of the deck! (Read the book for the angle.) When you see Anderson playing Judge Stone in Night Court or the recurring bit part in Cheers as "Harry the Hat" you will realize that he really was not acting!

                2 out of 5 stars It's called "A Guide for Suckers".......2006-03-06

You probably are a sucker to buy this book. I enjoy Harry Anderson and the book is amusing, but pretty thin on actual games you can't lose. In fact, it gives more coverage to games you cannot win. I was hoping for a book on what Harry Anderson calls "Cunning Stunts" but there are only a few in the book and a couple of those require cheating. On the other hand, if you think you can win at a casino or at 3 card monte, this book is a fun and simple way to show you just how wrong you are and will easily save you twice what you pay for it.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and quick read.......2005-05-12

Harry Anderson won acclaim as the affable judge in Night Court. He was also well known for his cameos on Cheers, where he swindled Norm, Cliff and crew with relative ease. Harry Anderson was also a successful magician, and has hosted several cable specials on the subject.

Before all of that, Harry Anderson was a con man, and a good one at that. In this little volume, Anderson sets forth a number of entertaining cons, and strategies that can be used at the bar. For the most part, these swindles are not going to make you rich. In fact, these cons are immediately apparent for most people. If they are not apparent from the start, they will be apparent at the conclusion. It is because of this that Mr. Anderson declares that you must perform these tricks in an entertaining way, or else you might run into some well deserved violence.

This book is not supposed to be a definitive list of street crime. What this book really represents is a system of thinking, a system that you can use to create more of your own games that can provide some fun at the bar.

Anderson also has a decent field guide to avoiding scams. Casinos, carnivals, and street cons are all described. For many people, this should be required reading.

This book is extremely entertaining. Harry Anderson writes in a quick and witty style that gives the reader the sense that Anderson is a throwback to the speakeasies and mobster era.

If you're looking to make money scamming John Q. Public, don't buy this book. If you're looking for a quick and entertaining read that is fairly informative and will provide you some interesting time killers, get this book.

5 out of 5 stars a good way to get money.......2002-05-14

this book has a lot of very cunning tricks you can do to other people and you are guaranteed not to lose at any of them ,which leads to collecting a lot of bets.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books!!!.......2001-05-10

This book is great. The guy who gave it 2 stars is misguided. The bits in this book are priceless. There are several bar bets, stunts, gambling advice and cons. The best part is that it is such a fun read. Definitely read this book some day before you die!!
