A Fabulous Guidebook for Art Lovers.......1998-07-31
I just returned from Paris and I used this terrific guidebook more than any other. It's perfect for any art lover and is easy to use. It covers all of the museums of interest in Paris, major ones like the Louvre and the Musee D'Orsay and the more minor ones like little gems such as the Musee de l'Orangerie and the Musee Marmottan. For each museum it gives a photo and a one page description of each of the major works of art in that museum. It also covers major places of architectural interst like the Eiffel Tower. Included also are maps, a seven day touring plan of museums and monuments and a ten page introduction to the art history of Paris as well as museum opening times.

Funny and thought provoking.......2007-09-03
Wallace shows the reader that closing oneself off to new experiences can lead to many missed opportunities.
This book is an account of a year in Wallace's life. He has broken up with his girlfriend and is despondent that he has lost touch with so many of his friends during the ensuing depression. He has nothing to do . Thus, he resolves to say yes more and see where life takes him. Like Wallace's other book, Join Me, he becomes a hapless observer while his new directive guides his life for him with hilarious consequences.
Wallace's writing style is crisp and fast paced. Though he makes a few jokes here and there, it is the increasingly outlandish situations he finds himself in that provides so much amusement for the reader. But, between the laughs, it made me see the value in saying yes. Ultimately, Wallace shows that by saying yes, his life became immeasurably better.
Fans of Wallace's books may also want to check out Henry Alford, his gay American counterpart.
This book is a very fun and fast read. Recommended to all.
He does what we'd like to but don't have the nerve to.......2007-09-02
I highly recommend this book for laughs. But beyond that, this guy lives a life many of us, me included would love to. He gets these zany ideas, then he acts on them! Kind of like George Plimpton's inside view on sports, this is vicarious pleasure. In this book, Wallace pledges to say "Yes," to everything. The results of this simple, yet profound manifesto, are hilarious, amazing and even moving. We not only follow Wallace's adventures, but the journey of his conscience, his internal battles as he fights to stay true to his commitment. I alternated between thinking the guy was certifiably crazy, with bouts of wishing I had his nerve. A totally fun and engaging read.
A very funny book that could change your life.......2007-08-15
This is one of the funniest books I have ever read. I found myself laughing out loud while reading it, in public (possibly to the annoyance of the people around me), multiple times. I haven't done that since I read the Hitchiker's Guide when I was a kid. It also really highlights the possibilities in life that are available to all of us, if we are just willing to take advantage of them.
In short, this was a highly entertaining book I could hardly put down, and reading it really could change your life.
Brilliant, and easy to read without having been written for children........2007-08-04
Just finished Yes Man by Danny Wallace. Absolutely brilliant novel about a guy who decides to say Yes to every opportunity and offer that he gets, and what effect this has on him.
Often books with premises like this are written badly, but his style was perfect - one of the easiest books to read that I've ever come across, despite a rather unfamiliar vocabulary(ok, well not so unfamiliar, as I am aware of all the British slang used but it is strange to read it) the book flows extremely well.
I also think it is a much more life changing book than regular philosophy. It has interested me in trying out this "yes" thing. I wonder where it will take me if I do decide to give it a shot.
I'd suggest it to everyone, whether you only read fantasy or only read non-fiction. It is also absolutely hilarious so if you're just looking for a very funny book, it fits that as well.
Inspirational and funny.......2007-07-16
If you feel like your life is in a rut, read this book. It shows you what can happen when you start saying yes to everything (the good and bad). It's a very feel-good book. Also if you also need a good laugh, check out this book.

The Church's supreme magisterium and representative of the Church's most penetrating theological reflection combine to provide for all the faithful a rich and concise compendium of the Mother of the Redeemer. Not for the uninitiated -- still a valuable treatise.......2007-01-16
I turned to this encyclical as a sort of introduction to Catholic ideas about Mary, the subject being one of those which former Prostestants, especially former Fundamentalists like myself, have a very difficult time understanding. My ever-growing pro-Catholic sympathies are such that I found much here to enlighten me: an understanding of how Mary might be considered the best example of the Christian faith, for instance, and some of the hows and whys regarding Marian devotion. I found especially helpful and charming that those scenes in Mary's life the Pope focuses on are those which form the joyful meditations of the Rosary (annunciation, visitation, etc).
However, I'm not sure this was the best book solely about Mary for me to read first, and I'm sorry to say that I found the main text (that by John Paul II) to be a difficult read. Not because I couldn't follow it, but because the text is so quote- and symbol-heavy that it became repetitious and rather nebulous (both the intro by Cardinal Ratzinger/Benedict XVI and the commentary by von Balthasar, on the contrary, were succinct and helpful). I can't offer objective criticism here, having come to the book from a very particular perspective. So I'll simply say that it's probably not an ideal introduction to the topic--not for the uninitiated. I certainly wouldn't be so presumptious as to call it poorly reasoned, as another reviewer has done, because it is not intended to be a pro-Mary argument for non-Catholics.
Not so helpful for a non-Catholic.......2006-03-09
I admire the three authors, and I was curious how they would present the ideas. Maybe one has to be Roman Catholic to follow the thread of these writings, because it struck me as poorly reasoned. As a tool to serve ecumenism, I think it fails. It does provide insight into the affinity these men have for Mary, and it frequently includes references to other works that would be of interest to serious students. It is nevertheless heartening to witness such emiment scholars treating the person of Mary with care and reverence.
Compelling, interest description of teaching on Virgin Mary.......2002-10-15
As a young man in the process of converting to Catholicism, I found "Mary: God's Yes to Man" to be a very compelling, deep, and driving study of the role of the Blessed Virgin in History, in Tradition, in the Church, and in the lives of the modern believer. I went into this book with very little knowledge of who the Church says the Virgin Mary is, and coming out of it, I feel like I could comfortably explain the doctrine to anyone. The use of Biblical exegesis, and the style of Biblical interpretation was quite interesting for this former Protestant Evangelical. The Holy Father is an excellent writer, and both Cardinal Ratzinger and von Balthasar offer interesting commentary on his writings. A good read, seeing as it took me less than 36 hours to do so.
