Type in Motion: Innovations in Digital Graphics is a high-energy, brilliantly colored coffee-table book--and a serious exploration of the latest trends in type design in commercial and fine art as well.
The book is an intensely visual guide to the variety of type designs in today's media. It examines movies such as Prospero's Books and The Pillow Book, where beautiful calligraphy plays a large role, and movies such as Mission Impossible and Good Will Hunting, where the titles are produced with careful attention to typography. The writers also explore type design in commercials and documentaries. A variety of pieces they present were originally delivered on CD-ROM, Web site, video, book, or other medium--there's even a sculptural toy--and include interactive press kits, experimental design showcases, digital opera, interactive calendars, and scientific research on type.
Throughout, captions explain the design, interface, and animation of each project, and pictures illuminate the nature of each. If you're a serious artist who enjoys manipulating type in ever more creative ways, this book will serve as an inspiration for your own work. And even if you simply dabble in art and appreciate the lovely ways in which typography and script can deliver a message, Type in Motion will be a source of great reading and viewing pleasure for you. --Kathleen Caster
Book Description
The most advanced typographic work from around the world, from one-person experimental studios to university-based research groups.
It has been six years since the publication of the internationally successful Type in Motion, the first book to present an overview of animated digital typography. Six years is a long time in the digital world, and creative innovation in motion graphics continues unabated.
Over eighty projects are presented here in detail and arranged into five chapters that address particular issues facing today's designers. "Identifying" looks at kinetic typography's role in branding through media such as television identities, program titles, and transition sequences. The delivery of information about a product, service, or event through a typographic message is considered in "Informing." Stitching together word, image, and sound to create stories and establish a context, "Storytelling" addresses issues of narrative, in which the designer establishes the framework but the user creates the story. "Traveling" focuses on the user, from Web site navigation to chat rooms. "Speculating" features a wide spectrum of experimental projects in type and letter design, exploring new ideas, functions, and methods of communication.
Type in Motion 2 raises visual communication and motion graphics to new levels and captures the true spirit of innovation and imagination in the contemporary design scene. Over 300 illustrations in color and black and white.
Customer Reviews:
Good addition to design knowledge.......2007-09-30
This is book is an addition to the motion design workflow where you can get to know how to use typography in your day-to-day work related to broadcast and motion graphics animation. It certainly has good tips if you want to improve upon the area of typography usage in animation.
Not at all useful........2006-11-29
Having seen Matt Woolman's "Moving Type", which is a great resource, I had hoped for similar and updated content in covering this design area. This is a very disappointing book as it seems it is a compendium of advertising for the motion design houses out there with very little to offer aside from screenshots of various projects. You are better off just visiting the websites of the companies covered for free with the added benefit of seeing QuickTimes of the TYPE IN MOTION.
Ok if for free.......2006-03-16
I saw the first Type in Motion book, and it looked pretty interesting, so I bought the Type in Motion 2 because I thought all this cool stuff has happened between the first and second book. Well, the examples aren't that exciting and the layout of the book doesn't make them more so. If you're looking for inspiration, you won't find it here.
A great resource.......2005-12-14
Type in Motion 2 is the follow-up to Mark Woolman's original Type in Motion, the first book to present an overview of animated digital typography when it was published over six years ago. In this volume over 80 projects, from the most advanced studios around the world, are presented in a beautiful book bordering on sensory overload. Over 1300 images of animated typographic images from the Internet, film and television almost come jumping off the pages at the reader. With the sections "Identifying," "Informing," "Storytelling," "Traveling" and "Speculating," the author exhibits numerous projects specific to those topics - frame by frame in most cases - and explains what was needed by the client, the concept to be produced, the process of creation, and the end result. For a designer like myself, specializing in static graphic imagery, Type in Motion 2 is a great lesson in considering the option of potential movement in an image being creating, how that motion might be executed, what movements could be applied, and how the final imagery will impact the communication of the client's message. Those with experience in motion graphics, or desiring a career in the field, will find many examples of challenging concepts, incredible design solutions, and inspiring "eye-candy" in this book of innovative work. - Jeff Fisher, writer of bLog-oMotives and "Logo Notions" on CreativeLatitude.com
This book is missing a key component.......2003-08-29
The title of this book is "Type in Motion," but it's missing just that - type in motion. In order for this book to be really useful, it should have a DVD or CD with image files that can be reviewed. Instead there is nothing but screen grabs, which is interesting but not especially helpful.
I wouldn't bother.

Book Description
The nineteenth century was a remarkable period in art history during which the practices of painting, printmaking, and photography intersected in new and unexpected ways. Massive changes in the technology of reproduction took place, and France in particular became a leading testing ground for new printing and photographic techniques. This abundantly illustrated book investigates for the first time the complex and lively interactions between painting, printmaking, and photography in France during the 1800s. Cultural historian Stephen Bann explores why rising reproductive media did not supplant traditional modes and how, instead, printmakers, photographers, and painters influenced and inspired each other's work, together creating a visual culture of unique richness and breadth. The book focuses especially on pictorial reproduction involving painting, printmaking, and photography in combination. Bann includes in the discussion the interweaving careers of Ingres and such contemporary painters as Vernet and Delaroche, such printmakers as lithographer Nicolas Charlet and engraver Luigi Calamatta, and such pioneering photographers as Niépce, Daguerre, and Robert Bingham. Setting the nineteenth-century issues of reproduction in the context of art history and theory, Bann also offers insights into the nature of art reproduction in our own era of radically changing reproduction technology.

How new technologies enhanced these mediums.......2002-02-05
Stephen Bann's Parallel Lines focuses on printmakers and photographers in 19th century France, when practices of printmaking and photography began changing. This considers relationships between painting, printmaking and photography during the period and how new technologies enhanced these mediums.

Book Description
For half a century after its introduction in Europe, printmaking remained the province of a specially trained group of professionals. What changed this situation was the invention of etching, which allowed for print designs to be drawn directly onto a plate so that any competent draftsman could try his hand at it. Many artists did, and as a result, we now have a wide-ranging corpus of major Renaissance and Baroque graphics made by artists who, though famous in other fields, were novices in the print medium.
Featuring essays by Michael Cole, Larry Silver, Susan Dackerman, Graham Larkin, and exhibit co-curator Madeleine Viljoen, The Early Modern Painter-Etcher spans three centuries, roughly from the time of Dürer to that of Goya, and looks at works executed by some seventy painters for whom printmaking was primarily an experimental field. The book accompanies an exhibition that opened in April 2006 at the University of Pennsylvania and will travel to the Ringling Museum of Art and to the Smith College Museum of Art.

Book Description
When three friends find a golden crown on a rock in the forest, they argue over who should wear it. Written on the rock is the message: "For the mightiest." But who is the mightiest? When a tiny old woman comes along, Bear, Elephant and Lion agree to take turns to see who can scare her the best. But their contest goes awry when a GIANT appears to claim the crown for his own. Is he the mightiest? Not if the tiny old woman has anything to say about it: she's his mom. And she's not too happy about her son being such a bully!
Keiko's latest charmer plays with size and power, in her inimitable style, with adorable animals, perfect pacing and hilarious understatement. As any kid knows, there's no one mightier than Mom.

Follow Joey Price on the adventure of a lifetime through the Stuffed Animal Kingdom in this epic all-ages odyssey! When Joey's worst fears, The Beasties, come crawling out of his closet in the middle of the night, he finds out his new stuffed animals, the Night Pride, are more real and more needed than he ever could have imagined.
Customer Reviews:
You have to get this book!.......2007-01-30
I had the privilege of meeting Mike Bullock at the Phoenix * Cactus Comicon, and not only is he a great guy, he's a fabulous writer and has created a world that any kid would love to dive into head first. How many times have you had nightmares about monsters under your bed, or creepy beasts lurking in your closet? Were you ever so terrified that you couldn't so much as move to run out of your room? Mike has created a world where the stuffed animals come to life to protect their owners from those evil creatures. The art in this book is simply gorgeous, and the story is a blast. Whether you're 10 or over 50, you won't be able to put it down! It's obvious why Hollywood has come a callin'.
A Classic Tail... er Tale!.......2007-01-17
I love comic books, and I love children's books! So Lions, Tigers, and Bears by Mike Bullock and Jack Lawrence was a dream come true for me!
Bullock and Lawrence draw us into a grand adventure with a child's eye view! Young Joey is given a set of stuffed animals by his grandmother. He's told they'll protect him. Little does he suspect how true this is! When the beasties come to get him, Joey's stuffed guardians spring to life and protect him! What follows is an incredible and touching story that leads Joey through the Stuffed Animal Kingdom!
Between Bullock's vivid writing and Lawrence's stunning visuals, Lions, Tigers, and Bears is as near perfect as any all-ages comic out there! There is no denying this comic is destined to be remembered and treasured for generations to come.
BRILLIANT all-ages read.......2007-01-01
This is one of those comics that I found relatively late. I didn't read it when it first came out, and now I've caught up and can't wait for more. Jack Lawrence and Mike Bullock have crafted a story with a very simple premise: stuffed animals are really alive, and have been charged since the beginning of time with the task of protecting their children from the "Beasties" (literally the monsters in the closet). This story focuses on two children tied in to this ancient symbiotic relationship, charged with its future, who have come under the Beasties' wrath, and the noble stuffed animals -- the Night Pride -- charged with their protection.
The story is wonderful -- the characters are vivid and there's plenty of action and fantasy to go around. The artwork is equally as good -- Bullock's art leaps off the page, full of energy and vibrant colors. If nobody in Hollywood has tapped this yet for an animated film (a TRADITIONALLY animated film), then everyone in Hollywood is out of their minds. I absolutely love this book, and I can't wait for more.

My daughter loves Lars.......2004-07-29
An adult might find the storylines a bit repetitive but my 3 year old loves all of the Lars books. We got her some at xmas and she was so pleased that we bought all the others for her birthday 5 months later and she wants them read to her over and over. She even 'reads' them to her younger brother!
Lars Is On Another Adventure.......2000-08-04
It's hard to resist this beautifully illustrated series about Lars, the Little Polar Bear. In this edition, Lars meets Sasha, a tiger, and they both have to find their way home after stowing away on a Russian train. Along the way they discover each of their natural talents, and there's a nice message about appreciation for parents, the ocean, and each person's unique abilities. Not sure how accurate the geography is, but it doesn't really matter. The introduction of different animals and scenery is what makes the books so appealing. All of these stories have a happy ending. My son likes to roar and point to the tiger and bear on each page.

OOH OOH AH EE! A GREAT BOOK, YOU'LL SEE!.......2001-06-11
This is a great book for young kids!!! My daughter is absolutely captivated by the rhyme of each page only to be followed by her mesmerizing stare at the pull out tabs of each animal. This book uses a four line rhyme to ask children which animal they are describing and then you pull the tab to reveal...WHO LIVES HERE?. Monkeys have bananas, giraffes eat from trees, alligators have sharp pointy teeth, elephants have long noses, and the king of the jungle, the lion, roars! This book is a must have for any parent who loves to see their children enjoy a book!!!
