One of the most powerful and moving biographies.......2001-04-27
You may have read many memoirs, and biographies about people affected by the Holocaust. However, do not think this is similar to other stories, or be put off by a topic that is upsetting. The journey through this book will be more than rewarding. Mary Felstiner has a deep, historical knowledge of Charlotte Salomon that she relays in a moving, and powerful style. You feel that you intimately know the people she writes about. Salomon's story is not one that is widely known, but it should be. She painted her life story during the Nazi years in the form of an operetta. Her paintings recently on display in the US tell a painful, vivid story of her, her parents, and her lover. This book is about what happened to Charlotte Salomon and her family during the Nazi years, but will also be of great interest to people interested in art, and in the human condition. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Book Description
With its fittingly dramatic design, Courbet and the Modern Landscape accompanies the first major museum exhibition specifically to address Gustave Courbet's extraordinary achievement in landscape painting. Many of these carefully selected works produced from 1855 to 1876--gathered from Asia,
Europe, and North America--will be new to readers.
The catalogue--which accompanies an exhibition at the Getty Museum to be held from February 21 to May 14, 2006--highlights the artist's expressive responses to the natural environment. Essays by the curators examine Courbet's distinctly modern practice of landscape painting. Mary Morton's essay
situates his landscapes in relation to his work in other genres, his critical reputation, and his role in establishing a new pictorial language for landscape painting. Charlotte Eyerman's essay investigates how later generations of nineteenth- and twentieth-century artists responded to Courbet's
example. The catalogue also includes an essay by Dominique de Font-Reaulx, curator of photographs at the Musee d'Orsay, on the relationship between Courbet's work and landscape photography of the 1850s and 1860s.

Book Description
It's 1894. Charlotte and her American family have been living in France for two years where her father has learned the new way of painting called Impressionism. Now her father's paintings are going to be featured in a show in New York and the whole family is going along. New York is a hustling, bustling city like no other in the world, and Charlotte records it all in her colorful journal.
Illustrated with striking museum reproductions, beautiful watercolor paintings, and collages, the book also includes biographical sketches of the featured painters. Charlotte's exciting journey to the city that never sleeps will make any reader shout, "I love New York!"
Book Description
In 1927, the French designer Charlotte Perriandthen only twenty-four years oldwon instant acclaim for her design for the "Bar sous le toit" (bar in the garret), shown at the Salon d'Automne in Paris. The project brought her to the attention of Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, who asked Perriand to join their atelier. There she was put in charge of the furniture and fittings program and worked on such legendary designs as the sculptural "chaise lounge," the "grand confort" chair, and the "fauteuil à dossier basculant" (sling chair).
Her autobiography, "Charlotte Perriand: A Life of Creation"published in France in 1998is the first mahor English-language volume on her career and personal history. In addition to her association with Le Corbusier, Perrieand recounts her experiences in Russia, the Far East, and South America; she also discusses the projects she worked on after leaving Le Corbusier's atelier in 1937, ranging from a vast ski resort at Les Arcs to the "espace thé" (tea area) in the UNESCO garden in Paris. Perriand's fascinating memoir is unique not only in its firsthand depiction of the goals and tenets of the heroic period of modern architecture but also in its portrayal of a century of life in Paris.

Book Description
"Moser's [book] does a splendid job reconstructing Connell's artistic pilgrimage in stunning color photographs of sculptural groups and separate pieces and in the thoughtful, succinctly-written text that places the sculptor's life and work within a cultural context . . . what Moser has offered us is a sensitive and comprehensive study of an artist whose work is as deeply rooted in region as it is in contemporary international art." --Southern Quarterly "Clyde Connell is no naive Grandma Self-Taught-Artist. This study of her work will be quite essential for the art world to see how significant work can be produced outside the myopic world of New York, Chicago, Los Angeles . . ." --Lowery S. Sims, Metropolitan Museum of Art Louisiana sculptor Clyde Connell observes, "I don't stay still in art, in life, in thinking, in feeling." In this study of her life and work, Charlotte Moser traces the changes that have led Connell from a proper plantation upbringing to civil rights activism and to the creation of nationally recognized art. Influenced by such modern movements as abstract expressionism and minimalism but also by black culture and religion and by primitive art, Connell's work reveals a mystical relationship with nature and a southerner's strong sense of place. Her growing national reputation has brought numerous awards and inclusion in several prestigious exhibits, including the exhibit Different Drummers at the Hirshhorn Museum of Art in 1988.

A great introduction to Whiteley.......1998-01-03
Any book which attempts to analyse the art and the life of an artist of Whiteley's magnitude has to fall short. However, this book is a good attempt and has been written by two experts on the great man's work: his former wife Wendy and Barry Pearce, curator of the Art Gallery of NSW. It contains fairly good plates of some of the artist's best work, although much is of course missing. I'd recommend this along with the aritst's own catalogues as the best place to start in any attempt to understand the artist and his work.

In this fascinating account, the young singer shares her amazing true story. Customer Reviews:
GOOD voice ,BAD writing........2005-12-28
Charlotte Church can sing. what she Can't do is write. in fact I'm not all that sure she wrote all of this book herself. I think its more then likely that she had a ghost writer to help her. this book does give some good info about charlottes life and early career, but there is really WAY to much about her family. she also says that she read wuthering heights by Jane Austen. right. bottom line: get her CDs not her book. our get this book from the library like I did.
It's cute but the publishers erred.......2005-06-11
I bought this book recently at the Dollar Tree for $1 because I was curious. I read it and thought it was cute. BUT, that having been said, I believe the publishers really erred in how they originally released this book; they took it FAR too seriously for a "biography" purportedly written by a 15-year-old!
First of all, the book as released was too expensive. The audience to which it should have been geared was pre-teen girls, unlikely to pay $22.95 for a (thin) hardcover book; it should have been released directly to paperback. Secondly, since the book was written in a chatty diary format, it would have been appropriate and more entertaining to have had portions of it in Charlotte's own handwriting (assuming it's not too dreadful), and other portions done like a scrapbook, particularly the tales of her travels.
Given how Charlotte's life has changed since she wrote it, this book is also a nostalgic read. The "angelic" little girl with the lovely clear soprano voice seems to be long gone at this point, replaced by a "pop tart" who appears to want to be in the mold of a Britney Spears or a Christina Aguilara.
Music does flow in her blood.......2004-03-25
After reading this book, you'll know what music is to Charlotte; it's in her. I thought the book was well written. I don't know why some people seem to be passionately against her. One reviewer says Charlotte doesn't write about her music, but that's not true. Most of this book IS about her music! As a matter of fact, I bought "Voice of an Angel" after reading this book. I only wish she showed her Welshness more in the book.
Well Written And Enjoyable To Read.......2003-09-08
I too am a classical singer, and I must admit that Church might not be as wonderful as the World has made her to be. I do also have to say that I very much enjoy listening to her music and I think she has a lot of potential. Those who give her such low reviews, in my opinion, are jealous and unfair to Church.
As for the book? I thought it was very well written and I thoroughly enjoyed every chapter! I'm 15 and it kept my attention through the whole book. I found her life to be not that of a rich and famous singer/star, but that of a regular teenage girl. Sure, she's got about a million times more than most regular people will ever have, but she lives in a semi-regual way compared to other stars. It tells a lot of interesting facts about how she got started, her family, her home and travels.
In all, I have to say that this was very entertaining. I would recomend this book to those of you who are not jealous of this teenage star and for those of you who like to read about famous people.
Wow, no talent and no brains either!.......2003-01-23
I'm sorry, but this is ridiculous. Can someone please tell me why so much hype concenring this "child prodigy"? Yes, at 12 years old she was good, however not as amazing as America percieved her to be. Now, years later she's gotten worse, and still everyone fusses about her! and now the next thing i see, we have to read about her life so far? please! she seems very shallow according to this book, to tell you the truth, she doesn't seem interesting enough or have enough depth to her to write a book. she just seems like a one-dimensional money-making machine that once showed potential and now is just something to make money off of. I'm sorry if this is cruel, but that's the price publishers risk when releasing nonsense like this.

A strange and moving masterpiece .......2007-02-09
I saw the pictures reproduced in this book in a special exhibition at the 'Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Museum' in Jerusalem. I was in the company of a professional artist who was astounded by the insightfulness, intelligence and even humor of Salomon's work. She tells a harrowing and tragic family story in this work.
This is what Wikipedia has to say about her work.
"This series of gouaches is an extraordinary and unique document. In great detail it tells the story of Charlotte's family and friends, her own internal life, the political background, and her obsessive love affair. Charlotte Salomon had an artistic training and her household was highly cultured. The way she tells this story is full of tragedy, but the telling also reveals Charlotte's sly humour and wit. The series starts out with highly detailed and multi-layered images of the life and relationship between her mother and father. As the story unfolds the style gets broader and more expressionistic. The last 'chapters' are almost violent in their expression, as if Charlotte is aware of her impending fate and can hardly wait to write and paint the details of her story as the Gestapo close in on her life.
A large part of Life? or Theater? is about her obsession with 'Amadeus Daberlohn', a voice teacher she met through her stepmother 'Paulinka Bimbam' (Charlotte gives all her characters humorous, often punning, pseudonyms). These sections are honest and compelling accounts of her passionate relationship with Alfred Wolfson - the one person who took her artistic work seriously. It is not possible to know if Charlotte's version of her relationship with Wolfson corresponds with reality, but he was undoubtedly her first love."
The work also has indications for original scored music. And there are captions with each of the drawings make it into a kind of fascinating cartoon -like narrative.
Salomon and her husband were murdered by the Nazis. We cannot know the work she might have done had it been given her to live.
Life ? Theatre ? You are the director.......2000-04-05
It's a journey into time... I have bought after seeing the exhibition of Charlotte works in London. The book, which is a collection of her paintings, takes the visitor through her animated 'play' into her life, the destruction withing her and around her. But the beauty prevails.
