Roman Signer (Contemporary Artists)
Gerhard Mack , Paula van den Bosch , and Jeremy Millar Manufacturer: Phaidon Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0714844454 |
Book Description
First Monograph on theExplosive and Prolific Swiss Artist Though Roman Signer (b. 1938) identifies himself as a sculptor, his work iswithout boundaries and doesn't fit into an artistic mold.He is interestedin fire, water, wind and time, inspiring unique and witty artisticexpressions that cross and include many different artistic mediums.ROMAN SIGNER, by Gerhard Mack, Paula van den Bosch and Jeremy Millar, theonly monograph to cover the scope of this, literally, explosive artist. The Swiss artist is best known for creating events in which simplematerials (rockets, balloons, rushing water) react with natural forces tocreate surprising lyrical results.Part mad scientist, part sorcerer'sapprentice, part Buster Keaton, Signer often appears in these actions, sometimes at considerable risk to himself. Since the mid 1970s, Signer has examined the forces of elements - air, fire, earth and water - in a combination of performance (documented byphotography and video) and sculpture (the physical remains of his acts). With a Dadaist love for the absurd, his artworks include Race (1981), inwhich the artist races a rocket across a field (hopelessly behind from thebeginning, the artist loses by nearly the entire length); Action at HotelWeissbad (1992), in which an ordinary table is shot out a hotel window, theresulting photographs showing a table flying incongruously over a sleepySwiss village; Power of Rain (1974), in which rainwater gathers slowly in afunnel until its force shatters a block of plaster; and Bicycle withRockets(1991), the photographs of which show a fiery bicycle flyingthrough the gallery like a demon comet. Often Signer will exhibit the remains of an event not witnessed by thepublic, such as four empty barrels and a violently splattered wall, theremains of an explosion of paint in the gallery space (Portrait Gallery,1993), or four sand piles with perfectly round craters on each, the neatresult of four simultaneous explosions at their peaks (Cones of Sand,1988). Roman Signer's work has been exhibited at major venues across Europe andNorth America as well as international exhibitions such as the 48th VeniceBiennale.ROMAN SIGNER offers incredible insight into this prolificartist's life, career and influences. This book is an exciting addition toany contemporary art library as well as the perfect gift for anyone with aninterest in or appreciation for art.Customer Reviews:

Roman Signer: Travel Photos
Roman Signer Manufacturer: Steidl ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 3865212824 Release Date: 2006-11-15 |
Book Description
Since the early 1970s, Roman Signer has been making art that refuses to be described in conventional terms. His objects and installations look like science experiments, and his photographs and films seem only to document their results: In compliance with carefully planned and strictly executed and documented procedures, Signer sets off explosions and collisions, sending his materials flying through space. Videos like Boot with Rocket capture the original setup, soon to self-destruct. Signer's work gives cause and effect a humorous twist, as it does the scientific method, taking on the self-evidence of scientific logic as an artistic challenge. But in the midst of all this, Signer has also been making a much quieter and more conventional body of work, not unlike the one most readers keep in a shoebox on a shelf in their closets: His "Reisefotos," or travel photographs, track the great experiments of 20 years on and off the road, found works that, like Signer's own, called out to be documented. Whether his subject is a host's arrangement of objects or an event he's reluctantly participating in, it takes on an illustrative or narrative element, and sometimes a touch of irony. Travel Photos presents a previously unknown but completely characteristic side of Signer's work.
