4 out of 5 stars Indispensable, but not infallible.......2007-10-03

This really is an indispensable book for anyone seriously interested in pottery as an art or profession. It contains lots of great information. It also contains some errors, most of which are little. Also, the rendition of the Chinese character for "raku" is ugly and missing a stroke. The title says this is a dictionary of materials and techniques - but it's more than that. It can serve as a jargon glossary, too. Also, some articles seem more concerned about meaning and interpretation and make practically no mention of materials or technique, and in the case of the "Teapots" entry, I thought it culturally-biased and incomplete. That said, get it anyway, this book is a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Extensive, Exhaustive, Excellent.......2007-05-12

The Potter's Dictionary offers details and facts about everything ceramic. Clay and glaze materials are explained more in-depth in this book than any other I have read. Subjects are presented in a clear and concise manner and the alphabetical order makes things very easy to find. It's more like an encyclopedia than a dictionary. When needed, great graphics complement many of the articles. No wonder this book has been published since 1975, A+!!!

This book never arrived even though i paid Amazon / UPS for next day delivery. I ended up getting it from Barnes and Noble in San Diego

3 out of 5 stars OK.......2006-03-09

This book had good reviews, but it seemed overly technical without context. For example, if some chemical compound was defined, the authors did not explain how that chemical compound is used, how it can be used, etc.

After one ceramics class I set up my own studio and began potting for a living. I bought this book and found it indespensable. I highly reccommend it to all my students. It is worth it's weight in gold luster glaze

      5 out of 5 stars A Potter's Guidebook.......2002-02-27

Refreshing approach, this reverse dictionary! Outstanding aid for collectors, and a MUST HAVE for studio ceramists. Anyone in need of an easy reference guide to ware types chocked full of nit-picking details on the whats and wheres and howtos ... and whys ... will cherish this book's offerings. And, potters rejoice, for a book by a potter for potters. And historins? They are treated to a treasure trove. Hats off to the author. Hope he/she has more on the way.

      5 out of 5 stars Reverse Dictionaries.......2001-09-19

Reverse dictionaries, references that list subjects by their common descriptions rather than by their common "names" (brands, manufacture, location, etc.), are handy indeed, and needed for most all subjects. Hooray, then, that someone has finally come up with a reverse dictionary for ceramics, where one can, for instance, look for PORCELAIN, get a DETAILED DESCRIPTION, and then be treated to where one can find EXEMPLARY PIECES. That this dictionary has been put together by a long-time practicing ceramist adds unusual and very helpful richness.
      Highly recommended for anyone's library.

                                  Adult full-color graphic novel.

This graphic novel was originally published as three separate comic magazines. The first chapter takes place in London.

The first chapter opens with Lilian and Agatha sharing a bath together and Mr. Holmes and Dr. Freud in the next room. While Mr. Holmes and Dr. Freud wait in the next room, the girls activity heat up. When the girls emerge, they note that they have been having the same nightmares, so they head off to visit a friend of Dr. Freud that knows something about hypnosis and repressed memories. We meet this friend (Dr. Fester) of Dr. Freud abusing one of his patients while she is under hypnosis.

While the girls and Dr. Freud are distracted, Holmes wanders off to investigate the case of a missing woman. And oddly enough, after exiting a morgue, Holmes runs across the woman in the process of being abducted.

Back at Dr. Festers, the girls enter a state of hypnosis and recall their nightmares, which involves something called "The Institute." Apparently this Institute has something to do with Ishtar and a lot of naked women. Oh, and Ishtar is a she-male. While Ishtar and the women start to attack Lilian and Agatha, the good doctors try to bring the girls out of hypnosis. Agatha awakens, but they can't revive Lilian. While this state of affairs is occurring, Mr. Holmes enters the room leading the woman that he had been seeking. Holmes wants only Freud to work on the girl because of Dr. Festers history (which is now shown in fuzzy pink light - apparently one of Fester's patients became very attached to Fester and then died).

Agatha and Holmes return home, leaving Lilian behind. Lilian "wakes" up to find herself in a strange room. Apparently the world Lilian inhabits is really like that Matrix movie. Lilian wakes up with a lot of things connecting to her in some watery stuff. She disconnects herself and gets out of the pod. A robot comes by and end of the first chapter.

Chapter Two: Lilian is still stuck "awake" in this Matrix like world, which appears to be controlled by the she-male Ishtar. Meanwhile, while Watson is laid up in bed ill, his niece Rhona comes by to provide him some care. In his ill state, Watson imagines Holmes and his niece fondling each other right in front of him. Dorian Grey joins the fun as an owner of an entertainment facility that uses slaves to provide entertainment for his guests. Grey's men turn up at Watson's and attack Agatha and Rhona, strip them, and end up beaten by the girls. Meanwhile Lilian's story in the "real world" continues with the she-male. Apparently, the computer feeds off sexual energy. And now Agatha and Rhona are captured, and some strange magic overcomes them and they "sleep" with each other. And the chapter ends.

Chapter three: While ill, Watson "accidentally" attacks and rapes his nurse. The police arrive and arrest the nurse, as one of Dr. Moriarty's spies. The girls at Grey's place continue their strange horniness and Lilian tries to escape from the computer. More bondage and sex fill out the rest of the chapter (don't want to give everything away).

Overall, the drawing is good, but at times the earlier black & white nature of the drawing leaks through, and destroys some of the artwork (though it is less of a problem than in the previous book). This book is weaker than the two first volumes and about on a same level of quality with the third volume. The book contains bondage, whipping, she-males, and more. There is a fifth volume in the series, but it currently is still in magazine form (and is not that good; Agatha and Lilian are old now and the story involves their grandkids).

God spoke to me and this is what he said! Do you ever wonder why bad things happen? Why did my child die? Why did a hurricane kill so many people? I must be joking, let me prove it to you! In 'The Game of Life', I will answer the question, why? I will reveal the true purpose for each experience you go through. I will use my life as an illustration to show you the veil of darkness and demonstrate to you the battle between good versus evil. More importantly, I will explain why the game is about to end! Yes, the clock is ticking down to the very last second! Are you playing your 'Game of Life' to win?

5 out of 5 stars Very, very impressive.......2006-08-11

I think it took a lot of guts for an upholster to write a book like this. I was very impressed that someone without any experience could write so well. The editing may not have been perfect, but I don't think the "Divine" expects perfection (which the book is very clear about). Anyone expecting God to edit His own work is just plain ridiculous. The content was extremely enlightening, and definitely God sent. I hope this author continues to write, I think she has an important message.

1 out of 5 stars This needs edited badly. .......2006-08-11

Just on the back cover of this book, there are six errors of spelling, punctuation, and usage. If this book was truly from the Divine, surely He would edit his work. The fluidity of reading this book was sketchy at best, and positively rambling at worst. In order to affect people, a book must be tightly edited; that demands respect. I think winning the game of life must not require these demands, but reading the book does.

5 out of 5 stars It filled me with confidence.......2006-08-07

My father died last year . He was my best friend. After reading this book I stopped blaming God and I started praising his name. Now I know that my life has meaning even if I can't talk to my dad and receive the encouragement that I need to live. Now I feel like I can let go of the past and march forward with confidence so I can win my game of life just like my dad won his.

Demons and angels, self-writing typewriters, elaborate games. You have to read it for yourself. There is not a dull moment.

5 out of 5 stars Best book ever! .......2006-08-02

Best book ever! I am raising three kids, who are three and under. This book helped me deal with the frustration and loneliness of motherhood by encouraging me not to be so hard on myself. I realized that as long as I was doing my best, that was good enough, and I would succeed the tasks God had set out for me.

From the way the author wrote, I couldn't guess how the story would develop. I was surprised at the very end. Not only I was engrossed, my husband started to read when we got on the airplan. After we arrived at our oldest daughter's house for the family reunion, he refused to put down the book until he finished the entire novel. I complained to my three daughters that he was hooked.

It was the description of little things that make the characters so alive and interesting, especially the family dog Ruby is larger than life. It is compelling, moving and with depth. I cried and laughed with the novel and wished the novel would never end.

The text gives the reader a glimpse into the Taiwanese society as well as the feelings, desires and emotions of the two sisters. The book is thoughful and well written.

                                      4 out of 5 stars A junior high librarian's perspective.......2001-10-31

This book may appeal to high school age girls and older for two reasons. One reason is the romantic story line, with two sisters who respond differently to their cultural tradition of arranged marriages. The personalities and choices of the two twenty-something women are contrasted. The expectations and desires of their parents are clear, but not accepted by either San-yih, the eldest daughter, or Fun-yih, the younger. They each must deal with disappointments in their romantic lives, one as she remains in Taiwan and the other in the U.S., where she has emigrated.
Another appeal is the picture provided of Taiwanese culture in the 1970s and the life of a Taiwanese immigrant to the United States. The book may pique the interest of high school students of Taiwanese background in their cultural heritage and may encourage communications with their elders about life in Taiwan and/or life as a new immigrant to the U.S. Others may enjoy reading about traditions totally unfamiliar to them and find that the book expands their understanding of people.

                                      Book Description

Can we grow old without dying? Why do we have to grow old at all? In this fascinating book Mark Benecke investigates the biological meaning of life and death and the prospects for extending human longevity, or even achieving immortality.

The first section of the book discusses the biological fundamentals of why death exists and what modern biology, especially the biology of genetics, tells us about aging and death. Human life and death, Benecke explains, is shaped by cellular life and death, so he examines the mortality of the normal cell as well as the "immortality" of cancer cells. In the second part Benecke assesses the various ways that we humans cope with a finite life span and the looming certainty of death, including such topics as the link between sport and vitality, the legends of Dracula and the undead, melatonin, vitamin C, and "the French paradox" concerning the link between alcohol consumption and heart disease. The third part looks at the possibility for extending our lives through cloning, organ and brain transplants, live cell therapy (favored by Sir Winston Churchill among others), and deep freezing of humans for reawakening in a future age.

Finally, Benecke tells us what we can learn about the prospects for the human race from a study of the earth as a whole-for we can stay healthy only if the earth is healthy. Climate change, overpopulation, population "crashes," Gaia, and the possibilities of future emigration into space are explained and explored. The Dream of Eternal Life concludes with a look at the human genome project and developmental biology, and Benecke sheds light on what this knowledge will mean for us in terms of understanding the nature of human life and our place in the living world. Throughout, Benecke maintains a scientific and skeptical attitude to many of the claims and counterclaims made by countless experts and fellow scientists.

Benecke knows how to explain complicated science terms in a simple, easy but very complete and delicate form. He mentioned a little bit of everything regarding life and death processes so you finally have a broad, complete concept of the mechanisms that have to occurred in all living organisms. Very Philosophic and Scientific at the same time (not a common trait to find in the same book!) Really helpful, interesting and enjoyable book!!! I really recommend this book for everyone who is interested in Biology, Philosophy, Biomedicine, Forensics and whoever that is inquisitive and always wants to learn and understand the real meaning of LIFE and DEATH other than the basic concepts. CURIOUS BIOLOGISTS MUST HAVE TO READ IT!!!

2 out of 5 stars Does Not Reflect Current Science.......2003-01-31

I bought this book hoping that it would provide a decent overview of current work on anti-aging medicine. I was sorely disappointed. Benecke spends much of his time on popular culture, philosophical musings, and general health tips like vitamins and the effect of alcohol on heart disease.

He does not cover the advances of the last 10 years in genetically engineering animals to live much much longer than the norm, using caloric restriction to extend life, the success of synthetic anti-oxidants in extending the lives of nematodes and fruit flies, or any other current scientific topic in anti-aging medicine.

5 out of 5 stars Life, death and everything in between..........2002-09-09

Mark Benecke has immortalised himself in this most witty of forays into the popular biology of life and death. All the concepts in this book are well-clarified, and easily accessible to scientists and non-scientists alike. Dazzling in its detail while remaining true to the `big picture' all the while, the narrative is almost like a cameraman zooming in and out to capture a panoramic landscape, looking at each issue from many angles. This is one of the many strengths of the book, making it well-rounded and non-biased on every level. The progression through basic cell and molecular biology to the concepts of life, death and immortality leads the reader in a satisfyingly logical order. From Dracula to Darwin, Gaia to genome, climate change to cryopreservation, this book is comprehensive enough to have it all. If you are human, and have an interest in life or death - read this book now!!

Biomedicine, aging and immortality are considered in The Dream Of Eternal Life: Biomedicine, Aging, And Immortality, a title that discusses the biological fundamentals of why death happens and how modern biology can explain its functions. Life and death is shaped by cellular life and death, the author explains: chapters consider the possibility of extending life through treatments and other options.

                                      5 out of 5 stars DREAM ON!.......2002-05-13

As a science writer, I've long been familiar with Dr. Benecke's cutting-edge work as a forensic entomologist. But it wasn't until I read The Dream of Eternal Life that I understood the good doctor's almost cult-like celebrity status in his native Deutschland. Not only does "Herr Maggot" turn up regularly on the front page of the German tabloids, some of his country's most talented writers and playwrights have been busy immortalizing the existential meaning of his undeniably gruesome forensic work (most famously, determining time of death by the insects found on murder victims).
In The Dream, Benecke proves himself to be the ultimate philosopher-scientist, peering beyond the physicality of the life science to address the BIG questions: Why are we here? Why do we die? What gives it all meaning?
A true renaissance man, Benecke also proves himself a knowledgeable and talented historian. In Dream, he traces the unfolding of our current understanding of life, evolution, and the powers that drive them. I especially enjoy his way with quotes--some of them obscure, but all of them enlightening. Among my favorites, in Chapter 1, Benecke ties together American biochemist Stanley Miller's famous recreation of the chemical precursors of life on Earth with German biologist Ernst Haeckel's earlier jest: "Condense away--soon enough, something will start crawling." As you may recall from high-school biology, that's pretty much what Miller did!
Importantly, you don't HAVE to remember your high-school biology to follow Benecke's enjoyable text. Unlike the majority of scientists-turned-writers, he conscientiously explains the basics for the layperson. Those who come to the book with a science background will enjoy the rich context he weaves for familiar milestones in research. I only wish The Dream of Eternal Life was around when I was 19 and trying to figure out the "meaning of it all."
