One could hardly visit Paris without viewing the work of the French impressionist painters, whose innovative take on the City of Light left an indelible mark on the art world. This charming little hardcover, perfect for the pocket or backpack, allows travelers to venture beyond the museum walls and trace the footsteps of these great artists, including Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Edouard Manet, just to name a few. Three city walking tours--surprisingly manageable considering the city's size--cover not only the sites depicted in many of their paintings, but also "the studios in which they worked, the buildings where they lived, and--this being Paris--the cafes in which they gathered." Expertly organized and packed with fascinating facts, including topographical and historical notes, detailed city maps and legends, recommendations for conveniently located restaurants, anecdotes about the artists and their work, and reproductions of the paintings, The Impressionists' Paris "brings the museum experience out into the real world, to better appreciate both the art and the city, one through the other." --Stefanie Hargreaves
Book Description
Travelers who follow the walking tours in The Impressionists' Paris will never see the paintings—or the city—in the same way again. From the historic Paris along the Seine, through the bustling grands boulevards, to the cafés of Pigalle and the dance halls of Montmartre, this guidebook pairs some of the world's most beloved masterpieces with the exact locations where they were painted. Readers follow in the footsteps of the artists from the pont Neuf depicted by Monet and Renoir to the intersection where Caillebotte painted his haunting street scene; from the balcony of the Louvre where Monet literally and figuratively turned his back on the establishment to the Gare St. Lazare, the train station from which he departed for his home in Giverny. Also revealed is the view out Manet's window, where he watched—and immortalized—a one-legged veteran hobbling down the flag-draped street. Period dining recommendations and the addresses of the studios where the painters worked, the buildings where they lived, and their birthplaces and gravesites complement this delightful guide.

Satisfied.......2007-01-11
This is exactly the book I was looking for and wasn't sure existed. Even if I don't get back to Paris for years, I can still feel a little closer to its streets because of this guide. This little book can not serve as a introduction to Impressionist art, but to those who already love Impressionism, this is a delightful addition to that appeciation.
Excellent mixture of information and imagery.......2002-08-14
This and a Metro map will take care of me for a week. A little about Paris, a little about the period, a little about the artists... "The Impressionists' Paris" is a learning experience, even for a student of impressionist art, and even if you're not planning a trip to Paris soon.
All but one of these 3 walks are on the right bank, which is otherwise somewhat impressionist-deprived since the good paintings moved from l'Orangerie to Musee d'Orsay. Combine Walk 1 with a visit to Orsay one day, then combine Walk 2 with an excursion to Giverny on another day.
Work the cafes into the rest of your visit to Paris. If you're into art and food, this book is a great companion to "The Historic Restaurants of Paris" by the same author.
Don't expect to find all of the locations intact, and there's the ever-present reality of construction and scaffolding. I hardly recognized the Pont de l'Europe from Caillebotte's painting, and Cafe de la Paix is closed for renovation (9/2002).
I'd love to meet this author sometime. She did this book like I would have (if I knew nearly as much as she). Each tour has a good map, and about 14-18 pages (each) of descriptions and pictures. Walking directions are in bold.
The book has nice color plates of selected paintings, matched loosely with period photos of Paris taken from old postcards, some with their 'timbres' quaintly intact. Lengthy captions add colorful trivia. She even finishes off the book with a tastefully written list of Paris cemeteries where the impressionists are buried.
Bon Voyage!
A work of art.......2001-04-24
There are many books about Paris, many about the Impressionists, and several about Paris and the Impressionists. If you're obsessed with Paris and Impressionism, buy them all. However, if you're not willing to build a new wing for your library, or simply want a book you can actually take with you and use while you're in Paris, this is the one. It's a true gem.
c'est incroyable!.......1999-04-06
If you love Paris and the Impressionists' work this is a must have. Taking the walking tours was the highlight of my last trip to the city of lights. Williams helps you see through 100 years of change into a different Paris.
A mirror image of the artists view.......1999-03-22
I think my students will love traveling in the footsteps of the impressionists. Seeing what the artists saw is worth a 1000 words in explaining they why of the subject painted.
Book Description
The Impressionists showed us a new way to look at the world with their graceful and fleeting visions of city streets and the countryside. But one aspect of their work has gone largely overlooked--the still-life painting. Here are some of the most memorable masterpieces in this genre, from the most beloved artists of the movement including Caillebotte, Cezanne, Degas, Fantin-Latour, Gauguin, Mamet, Monet, Morisot, Pissarro, Renoir, Sisley, and van Gogh.
These works depicting flowers, fruit, and table settings provide glimpses into the quaint and beautiful private spaces of Paris in the late nineteenth century. They evoke the comforts of a well-appointed home during the era when a new modern lifestyle and a new modern style of painting were emerging.
This charming book was produced in conjunction with The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., which organized the landmark traveling exhibition Impressionist Still Life.

Not only was Claude Monet (1840-1926) a leading member of the impressionist movement, he was also, as this charming book reveals, a master interior decorator. A virtual room-by-room guided tour of Monet's beautiful and much-visited home at Giverny, this volume offers a vivid impression of daily life in the beloved house where the artist lived for 40 years with his second wife and their eight children. With its pink stucco walls, green shutters, and brightly painted original furniture, the house reveals Monet's brilliance and innovation as a colorist, which transcended his light-infused canvases to inform his choice of hues for wall paint and furniture. Each room is explored in its own chapter with glorious color photos: the dining room, painted in two shades of yellow and adorned with Japanese prints; the blue-and-white-tiled kitchen; the blue drawing room; the studio as it appeared in its heyday. Enlarged paint swatches of Monet's unique color combinations accompany each chapter so that readers can reproduce them in their own homes.
Book Description
Claude Monet was as meticulous in the decoration his family home at Giverny as he was about the planting of its world-famous garden. Monet's home has been fully restored and decorated according to his revolutionary views on color and light. This book is an to visit the house on a summer's day in the 1890s to marvel at Monet's decorative vision,

The impressionist master,Monet's home represents a palette of vibrant color harmonies, and light fused into a radiant home of personal warmth and beauty. A perfect setting for the lush gardens flourishing outside. A full view of the rooms, that made Monet's house truly an artists abode with its elegant, yet simple furnishings.

Book Description
A celebration of domesticity and the daily life of the world's best-loved artists, filled with paintings, sketches, photographs, and quotations from diaries and letters.
Impressionist artists and their homes are inseparably linked: Monet and Giverny, Renoir and Les Cagnes, Pissarro and his Hermitage. For each, home meant something slightly different: a place of comfort in a rapidly evolving society, a sanctuary immune to changing fortune and fame, a simpler way of life away from the city, or a place to entertain and to express individual taste. All of the artists, however, made their homes a mainstay of their art.
Through this book we follow the artists' daily activities and routinesworking, dining, bathing, socializing, sleepingand come ever closer to the extraordinary characters behind the paintings. Here are Berthe Morisot's conversations with her cook; Degas' relationship with his devoted housekeeper; Monet's highly unconventional ménage with his second wife; the lingering mood of pleasure at the end of a good meal, as reflected in Renoir's Boatmen's Lunch. The reader witnesses the birth of the modern world, with its telephones and central heating, and explores the relationships between the artists and their models, mistresses, wives, friends, families, patrons, dealers, doctors, gardeners, and children.
The extended Impressionist family includes the American "Givernistes" who gathered around Monet in his later life and Impressionist artists from other countries. All find their place, and the book is completed by biographies of the supporting characters and the locations of Impressionist homes for today's travelers. 180 illustrations in color and black and white.
Customer Reviews:
Nice images; error- and cliche-ridden text.......2007-08-07
The illustrations are lovely but most are available elsewhere. More disappointing is the reprinting of anecdotal and scholarly information that has long since been disproven as factual truth and covered thoroughly elsewhere, in both more and less scholarly form. Buy this book for the pictures, but look for your up-to-date information elsewhere.
Well Written and A Very Enjoyable Read.......2006-05-31
Highly recommend this book. I have read many books on the French Impressionists and this book is in my ~Top 5~. Goes over the personal lives of the artists and their relationships.
Also, check out Pamela Todd's book, ***The Pre-Raphaelites at Home** if you are interested in that period of art.

Book Description
Villa Langmatt in Baden is one of the prime gems among Swiss private collections open to the public. In 1908, Sidney and Jenny Brown began to assemble the collection, the first Impressionist grouping in Switzerland, and today the results of their astute, sensitive collecting are presented in the original domestic environment in which the Browns lived with their beloved Impressionist masterpieces. Works by Camille Corot and Eug ne Boudin stand as preliminary pictures, followed by treasures from Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro and Alfred Sisley, as well as Paul Cazanne and Paul Gauguin. Also featured are pieces by Gustave Courbet, Henri Fantin-Latour, Odilon Redon, and Mary Cassatt. The collection is rounded off with a few 18th-century canvases. A Home for the Impressionists presents the complete group of paintings in the Sidney and Jenny Brown collection, as well as a selection of applied art objects, including furniture, silver, 18th- and 19th-century porcelain and Asiatica. Each catalogued work is detailed by a contributing art historian. Essays discuss the history of the collection, the architecture of the villa, which was designed by Karl Mose, and the gardens, which were laid out by Otto Froebel.
