    Book Description

"The Humanistic Tradition is quite simply the finest book of its type. Fiero manages to integrate the political, cultural, and social history of the world into one coherent and fascinating whole. It is a masterpiece of scholarship . . . balanced, interesting, easy to read, and consummately beautiful. Our professors praise its accuracy and scope and our students unanimously say it is their favorite textbook." — Sonia Sorrell, Pepperdine University

The Humanistic Tradition features a flexible, topical approach that helps students understand humankind's creative legacy as a continuum rather than as a series of isolated events. This widely acclaimed interdisciplinary survey offers a global perspective, countless illustrations, and more than 150 literary sources. Available in multiple formats, The Humanistic Tradition explores the political, economic, and social contexts of human culture, providing a global and multicultural perspective which helps students better understand the relationship between the West and other world cultures.

    Book Description

The explosion of creativity that marked the European Renaissance provoked an unprecedented age of exploration and of cross-cultural encounter. From the depths of the Black Plague to the heights of Shakespeare's sonnets, book three of The Humanistic Tradition provides an exciting portrait of this period. In a compelling counterpoint to her description of the Renaissance, Fiero devotes a section to the cultures that came into increasing contact with the burgeoning West - the kingdoms of West Africa and the societies of North, Central, and South America.

4 out of 5 stars too short.. get the full book.......2007-05-15

this is a smaller version of a bigger set.. these are nice sort of like excerpts from a larger text.. if you're only studying a small section of history and don't need to ever compare before or after they are ok..but you're better off getting the vol. I or II or both depending on what your needs are. most profs are going to want you to compare and contrast what came before and after ... these books have great pics..but get the larger versions.. as these are a lot of little books, and depending on your class you may need to carry 6 little books with you instead of 1 text..

1 out of 5 stars Poor source of detail.......2001-09-03

After using this book (as well as books 2 and 3) as texts for a class, I must say that I found all of them to be overrated and a poor choice of reference. The volumes contain nice photographs but are ineffective as textbooks. For example, as material is introduced a sudden segue to a new subject leaves the reader cold. I would not recommend any of this series to those who need detail. These books support a teaching methodology that relies upon mundane memorization of incidental information rather than comprehensive study.

    5 out of 5 stars Very well-done.......1999-12-19

I highly recommend this series of six books. When I was in college, I bought one of the books because it looked so interesting even though I wasn't taking the course. In the past year, I've ordered the other books in the series. The books are very interesting and informative, with many color pictures of the art and architecture discussed. The books also discuss literature, philosophy, and the history of science. The graphic layout of the books is excellent and there are many reading selections of literature and philosophy. Even though the series concentrates on western humanities, there are also excellent sections on Asian, African, Islamic, and Native American arts.

4 out of 5 stars Educationally excellent, however, erroneous.......1999-09-24

I find this book to be full of great educational material, however, when reading the "historical" research about the Hebrews, I find that it is full of erroneous information. For example, the book implies that the Hebrews "chose" to settle in near the Dead Sea because the land of Canaan was filled with large military forces, but the Bible clearly states that God (or their concept of God) caused them to roam as a form of punishment for their distrust in him. Also, it stated that the ten commandments are all negative (as in don'ts) when I can think of two (4-keep the sabbath, and 5-honor your mother and father) are positives. And, that the ten commandments had no specified punishment. From Bible standards, it is very clear, transgression of the law requires death of either the human or an animal.

                                  Book Description

In a breathtaking land of ice and cold, death has come...by fire.

In the lingering chill of the early Alaskan spring, famed "musher" Jessie Arnold confronts the charred remains of a favorite local pub, destroyed by a suspicious blaze that claimed an innocent, unsuspecting life. This lull between racing seasons is meant to be a time of grueling training and conditioning for Jessie and her dogsled team-but instead it has become a time of fear. Because the burning has only begun, and its flames will scar and blister Jessie's world in ways she can barely imagine. And in the wake of more death, her next race will be one for survival -- as she struggles to determine whether a desperate friend is a terrified victim...or a killer.

                                  Customer Reviews:

                                  3 out of 5 stars mediocre.......2006-12-16

I agree with a lot of the other reviews that this book was not up to Sue Henry's standards. Generally I enjoy reading about the dogs and the musher's life, and I did as well in this book. However the story was implausible and I felt the ending was very weak. Almost as if the author just wanted to finish the book and did not really think it out logically.

3 out of 5 stars Fun, Fast, Read.......2006-02-04

If you like dogs, and you like easy, uncomplicated mysteries, and you like strong, single, capable female heroines, you'll like this book. I did--very much. It's my first introduction to Sue Henry's "Alaska Mystery" series, and it certainly won't be the last.

Light on improbable plot but strong on descriptive details (really interesting information on how to mush a dog team, which I found captivating), the story concerns a series of arsons that come to involve heroine Jessie, her cabin, and her good name among her compatriots in the Alaska town in which she lives. It all centers on a former friend named Anne, whom Jessie picks up at the airport, only to regret the reunion the minute they meet.

I found the denoument so confusing that I'm still not sure who did what to whom, but nevertheless, I found the whole reading experience lots of fun--enough to want to try more Sue Henry.

                                  3 out of 5 stars Mush !!.......2006-01-16

Jessie Arnold, champion dog sled racer and dog breeder, is horrified when her favourite watering hols, "Oscar's Other Place", is burned to the ground, but even more so when an unidentified body is found in the ashes. She is even less pleased to be visited by a former neighbour, Anne Holman, who claims to be in hiding from her abusive husband, Greg.Anne is frantic to retrieve something from the burned out remains of their former home, which she claims was burned down by Greg, and pressures Jessie to take her back, by dog sled, to the ruins. She digs up a metal box which contains the bones of a baby who, she says, was murdered by Greg. On returning to town, Anne is confronted by Mike Tatum, an arson investigator who declares Anne to be a fire bug who caused the death of a family. Anne insists that Tatum is obsessed with proving her guilt and is not to be trusted. After Jessie's cabin is also burnes out, the story becomes fairly obvious but the author's descriptions of the Alaskan scenery and the details of long distance dog sledding are excellent. Perhaps readers who have followed Jessie's earlier acventures ( this is book 5)would gain more pleasure than I did from this book, but, to start at this point, it was rather ordinary.

3 out of 5 stars MORE FRIGID ADVENTURES.......2005-10-05

Sue Henry's Jessie Arnold series is wonderful in evincing a feel of the Alaskan wilderness and life in the "slow" lane. Unfortunately, Henry's books while generally entertaining are a little too laid back in their delivery, and Arnold comes across as a less effective heroine than she should be. In BENEATH THE ASHES, Arnold is approached by an old acquaintance to help her dig up something in a cabin where she lived ten years prior, having Arnold as her neighbor. We immediately dislike this friend, Anne, and it isn't too long before several arsons immerse Jessie in a complex plot in which she becomes a main suspect. Henry isn't a master of suspenseful plotting, but her images of the wilderness and her love for the sledding life is evidenced and entertaining.

the book beneath the ashes is about jessie arnold being framed for burning down the local pub, her house, and a couple other places that were linked to an arson murder 10 years ago. jessie tries to prove her innocence while looking for her missing friend ann holmon who is also a suspect in the arsons.

This book suggested the big "what if" someone actually knew and stood by while thousands perished! With all the scandalous behavior in corporate and political America, is it possible for someone to have inside information like this and, worse yet, use it for personal gain at the expense of human life? Makes me wonder!!

Beneath the Ashes: In the lingering chill of the early Alaskan spring, famed "musher" Jessie Arnold confronts the charred remains of a favorite local pub, destroyed by a suspicious blaze that claimed an innocent, unsuspecting life. This lull between racing seasons is meant to be a time of grueling training and conditioning for Jessie and her dogsled team-but instead it has become at time of fear. Because the burning has only begun, and its flames will scar and blister Jessie's world in ways she can barely imagine. And in the wake of more death, her next race will be one for survival-as she struggles to determine whether a desperate friend is a terrified victim...or a killer. Dead North: With her cabin a pile of ashes and her life in pieces, champion Alaskan "musher" Jessie Arnold has gratefully accepted a friend's proposal that she drive his motor home up from Idaho, along the Alaska Highway-a breathtaking, two thousand-mile-long route winding past hot springs, glaciers, and ice-blue lakes. But the idyllic trip takes a dark turn when a teenage hitchhiker brings terror aboard. Frightened and alone, Patrick Cutler disappears just before the police inform Jessie that the young runaway is wanted in connection with two shocking murders. Suddenly she is cast into a raging maelstrom of dark secrets and deadly consequences. And the cold and empty road she's traveling could be leading her not to her home...but to a grave in the trackless wilderness.

                                                Book Description

Manga fantasy is the swords-and-sorcery Japanese animation style featured in the most popular video role-playing games on the market. Best-selling author Christopher Hart's latest tutorial reveals the secrets and techniques that go into building these worlds of wonder. An increasingly fashionable style among both digital and traditional animators, manga enjoys unrivaled popularity among the game players themselves, allowing them entry into fabled worlds of startling beauty, terror, and adventure. Manga Mania Fantasy Worlds throws down the gauntlet for people interested in creating these scenes for themselves. Artists will learn how to illustrate detailed backdrops and landscapes, rugged weaponry, and, of course, fearsome creatures-aliens, faeries, ogres, and much more. In the straightforward style that is his trademark, Christopher Hart teaches the basics and the intricacies of creating manga fantasy illustrations that practically jump off the page.

                                                Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Another Collection of the Work of Christopher Hart.......2007-06-21

"M.M. Fantasy Worlds" displays hundreds of illustrations by Christopher Hart, and is a good showcase for his approach to Manga. I agree with the reviewer who identified his style as westernized, although this shouldn't discourage a Hart fan.

I don't think that this book lives up to the claim, "HOW TO DRAW THE AMAZING WORLDS OF JAPANESE COMICS" that appears on the cover. Mr. Hart pays ample attention to the steps in creating a selection of character types in his style, but relatively little to the worlds that these characters exist in.

That's not to say that his drawings aren't fun to view, and even to study. For example, on page 44 he points out the on-off switch in a medievaloid dungeon's torture device. The astute reader will also find anachronistic lighting fixtures in that illustration. The point being made is that mix-and-match technologies and architectural styles are creative opportunities.

However, Mr. Hart seems to offer his opinions as generally accepted principles. On page 65, he says "Faeries have wings and elves don't. Faeries also may have antennae, whereas elves never do. And, faeries can be very tiny in size, while elves, ... are not so tiny that they can be held in the palm of the hand...." Without going into the 19th century's effect on western culture and the stature of elves, I've got to point out that making undersized elves isn't a universal principle: and probably isn't in the free-wheeling world of Manga.

To end on a positive note, Christopher Hart's Manga world is a charming place. The wildly improbable castle and tributary town on page 42 still helps lift my spirits, when I remember how much I paid for the book.

Christopher Hart's book manga mania fantasy worlds is awsome! The book has alot of characters for different genres that would be helpful in giving your characters a special ability and a sense of personality with each power/ability. I love how the book has difference in each race, and gives you a variety of worlds. This book is a must have for those seeking to create a manga in a certain genre background and for ideas of what kind of race they would want their character to be.

2 out of 5 stars Not All Its Said To Be.........2005-07-11

Quiet honestly the one thing that makes Chrisopher Hart's books on Anime and Manga "less" than others is the fact that he isn't very good at it. Oh, he makes some good points, especially when comparing American comic drawing with manga style drawing, but there are better books out there.

If this is all that is available then you won't be to dissapointed in buying it, but being as they are usually around $20 (at least where I am) then you might want to get your moneys worth and stick around for one of Hikaru Hayashi's many How to Draw Manga books as they are usually more detailed and better drawn.

4 out of 5 stars Very Nice Artworks but somewhat Westernized........2005-01-26

I had mixed reviews about this book, but I had to admit that the reason why I bought this book was because of his fantastic cover art. :)

First of all, there’re some really good references on the fantasy, science fiction and medieval world. For example, you can find knights, faeries, monsters, dragons and even aliens in the book. Plus, topics on evolving medieval weapons, differences between elves and faeries, special effects and even the turnaround section (which tells you how a person looks like when “turned around) are covered. There’s also a section telling you what’s a weak and dynamic drawing looks like, which helps if you’re interested in honing your manga-drawing craft. Another great section I would like to point out is the “Castle” section. The book also covers some different places within the castle, such as the dungeon and drawbridge, and I find this really helpful when drawing the inside of the castle.

Unfortunately, there are only one example for most creature, beast or place, which can be rather limiting if you’re trying to draw the same creature in a different way. However, I think this is where your imagination will come in. Also, I noticed that some of the artworks have a certain “American” style (instead of Japanese) to it, but many of the artworks are very nice and attractive.

For the serious mangaka-wannabe though, you are better off getting more “technical” & "Japanese style" books such as the “How to Draw Manga” Series, but overall, this book will make a great reference or resource book for people interested in fantasy and drawing cartoon/manga.
