Seven Dada Manifestos and Lampisteries (A Calderbook, Cb 358)
ASIN: 0674185005 |
Book Description
The Dada Painters and Poets offers the authentic answer to the question "What is Dada?" This incomparable collection of essays, manifestos, and illustrations was prepared by Robert Motherwell with the collaboration of some of the major Dada figures: Marcel Duchamp, Jean Arp, and Max Ernst among others. Here in their own words and art, the principals of the movement create a composite picture of Dada--its convictions, antics, and spirit.
First published in 1951, this treasure trove remains, as Jack Flam states in his foreword to the second edition, "the most comprehensive and important anthology of Dada writings in any language, and a fascinating and very readable book." It contains every major text on the Dada movement, including retrospective studies, personal memoirs, and prime examples. The illustrations range from photos of participants, in characteristic Dadaist attitudes, to facsimiles of their productions.
Customer Reviews:
A classic, and a great intro........2007-05-13
This is Motherwell's classic book on Dada. It was the only comprehensive look at Dada for along time. Good for an intro as well as a comprehensive coverage of the original Dada's and their works.
Excellent resource for Dada history.......2005-09-22
Motherwell has compiled an impressive look into the world and lives of the dada artists. Exceptional!
Anti Unincorporated.......2000-12-20
Dada not only wrote and painted, it talked, drank, agitated, danced, babbled, burbled, shocked, indulged in self-loathing, took notes, held exhibits, dressed up, hooted, wrote scathing criticisms of itself, whistled, made noises with its skin, fell in love with itself, mailed letters, and then committed suicide. Huelsenbeck, Tzara, Breton, Ball, Duchamp et al. enacted Dada selves out of hatred for war, but their hatred and iconoclasm continued when they discovered that the monster that lives off of war didn't die on Armistice Day (the one in 1918). They became anti-everything that was Modern, Reasonable, Commonsensical, Appropriate, in other words, everything that would help humans hide from (while justifying) their own self-destructiveness. They tried to open up the unconscious and display it for Europe and America. This book charts that process better than most. The best of the essays about Dada is "The Dada Spirit in Painting" by Georges Hugnet, but the best pieces here are by those who, in writing and painting, were being Dada: Eluard's and Huelsenback's poems, Ball's "Dada Fragments," Tzara's "Seven Dada Manifestoes," Ribemont-Dessaignes' "History of Dada," and Breton on Duchamp.

Airbrush Artist's Pocket Palette.......2002-06-04
Airbrush Artist's Pocket Palette
This book is bad book for a beginner........2002-01-03
As a beginner I found this book to be inadequate for my needs. There are 63 pages of nicely spiral bound(book lies flat) examples of various effects. That is to say... 63 pages of coloful rectangles with some comments about how to achieve a particular effect. It's sort of like reading the ingredients for a recipe but not telling you how to mix the ingredients or cook it.
I imagine that this book has some use to an experienced airbrusher but I suspect that once you have the experience the book is not very useful and is merely a nice 63 page of pretty rectangles.
This was not a good book for me.
Excellent examples and wonderful illustrations.......2000-04-16
The Airbrush Artist's Pocket Palette is filled with wonderful techniques to create hundreds of effects and textures. I would not know how to create hair, skin, wood, metallic surfaces, stone or highlights with my airbrush without this book.
You will need to have some knowledge about color palettes and airbrushes to fully understand the techniques descibed in the book.
The book also contains several pieces of completed artwork. The techniques they used to create the paintings are described with the corresponding painting.
I have enjoyed this book since the day I bought it.

"...a Beginning".......2004-06-15
That is what this rather simple book is, a beginning. Having been out of the MAC world for years and, over the past week
back in it, I was expecting more. But I read (or skimmed) cover to cover and found that one week of hands on has brought me to a point beyond this effort.
With 10, 10.2 and 10.3 out already, this book is a bit behind. There are WONDERFUL (and I mean that) links, resources and 'further reads' listed and that is a great part of the text. But for anything beyond basic, I'd go elsewhere or wait for Hart to follow up. More performance issues, some step by step (for instance, updating Macs, bringing across email in a Windows network? How? Something I ran into in replacing older Macs)
Overall a great effort and does simplify. It's a beginning.
The first technical book I ever read cover to cover!.......2000-05-04
This book does exactly what it says it will do: it teaches you how to operate your Mac in a non-Mac world giving many, many practical solutions. It even gives impractical solutions when no practical solutions are available! Published in year 2000, it is a treasure of fresh web links that allow you to get current information on every topic covered. Instead of going into boring, techno-babble the book focuses on giving scenarios of what is trying to be accomplished, such as finding the best way to transfer files between Macs, PCs, and Unix platform machines. Then it provides solutions in general terms naming any hardware or software required to accomplish the task. Finally, it provides a resource list at the end of each topic which includes related commercial, shareware, and freeware publishers, hardware manufacturers, and their web sites. If you are the person in your cross-platform organization or school that other people rely on to provide them answers, this book is a valuable resource!

Sniffer Troubleshooting Manual.......2005-04-27
For all those looking for a book to learn to use Sniffer, or for Network Analysis or troubleshooting, this is the book. Robert and all have done a great job. If you plan to buy a book on or about Sniffer, then this is it.
Niloufer Tamboly, CISSP
Awesome Reference.......2003-07-11
I am a Network Engineer with about 6 years experience in networking and systems. This book is really cool. I have worked on so many networks that needed to be repaired and I wish I had this book years ago when I started learning. This book will not fail you. You will learn how to use the Sniffer, Troubleshoot with it, analyze with it, and best yet, you learn how to find problems in networks and this book tells you how to fix or redesign based on what the problem is. This is one of the better troubleshooting books I have seen. I also like the fact that the authors all work for fortune 500 companies, are certified as Sniffer Experts and CCIE level, how can you go wrong with this book? Hope this helps you as this book has helped me.
Great book to carry with your Sniffer.......2003-05-20
I'll keep it short. Thought that as an Sniffer University Instructor this book would not add much for me, but reading the book i found out that is really a good book to have in your neigborhood while working with the Sniffer. It just covers all aspects of the software and many things more that will help you on the way using the Sniffer to troubleshoot or monitor your network.
Excellent reference, great info on filters, triggers, alarms.......2003-05-01
This is an excellent book. The chapters on analyzing network issues and reporting are very good. I also liked the chapters on triggers and alarms. The coverage of troubleshooting is solid--three separate chapters, each full of good info and tips.
Concise, detailed book with good examples.......2003-04-29
I have been using this book on the job for a couple of months now, and it has greatly helped me take advantage of the most powerful Sniffer features. The authors do a great job of explaining how everything works and then showing you with real examples from a production network. This makes it much easier to apply the knowledge to your own network. The guy from Canada who slammed the book and complained that the authors aren't Sniffer certified must not have read the the page where it says the Technial Editor and lead authors are both SCE/SCPs.

Haunting Memories.......2002-09-20
"I like to remember things my own way . . . as i remember them. not necessarily the way they happened." These lines from _Forgotten Highway_ evoke the feel of Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean's compelling and evocative _Violent Cases_.
Enter the dimly lit, vague world of a man (who looks amazingly like Gaiman himself) remembering incidents from his childhood: a world of odd dentists, stupid birthday parties, evil magicians, and violent cases (violin cases). Our hero (for all of Gaiman's children are heroes) goes through his coming of age, in a frightening yet curious way, by peeking behind the curtain, while Gaiman's words and McKean's art take us along for the ride, peeking behind the curtain of memory.
Gaiman readers will definitely see similarities in style between this story and _Mr. Punch_, which, in my mind, stands as a companion piece to this book. Memory and its tricks, traps, twists and turns serve as the vehicle for both, and it's the uncertain but unquestioning way that we go through the memories that make these books so brilliant.
We all have memories. And if we look at them very closely, we begin to realize how scary some of those memories can be. As Gaiman shows us time and time again, the world is a threatening one to children: too big, too confusing, where children are constantly lied to and hushed even in moments of brilliance. Yet somehow we made it. Let Gaiman and McKean remind you how.
Very tastey.......2001-10-03
As usual, Neil provides his fans with another must have item.
A Compelling Gaiman Story Minus the Supernatural Elements.......2000-02-14
The persistence of memory is a common theme in Neil Gaiman's work. His characters often struggle to come to grips with their dimly-remembered pasts (take Rose Walker in "The Doll's House" or any of the characters in "A Game of You" from The Sandman, or even the protagonists of "Black Orchid.")
"Violent Cases" explores the gauzy environs of childhood memory. As he would later attempt with much more poignant effect in "The Tragical Comedy of Mr. Punch," Gaiman here examines a grown man's efforts to make sense out of violence in his dimly-remembered past, in this case revolving around a man who may have been Al Capone's osteopath.
The tale, while simple, is masterfully plotted, allowing the reader to make connections the narrator himself may not make. While the telling is a bit ham-handed in spots (you can almost see Gaiman grinning smugly at certain points; not a good thing), one must reflect that this was written quite early in the author's career, and marked quite a departure from comic book conventions. Even Art Spiegelman felt it necessary to use some of the art's cliches in his groundbreaking "Maus"; Gaiman chooses to ignore them quite audaciously.
The artwork by Dave McKean shows a strong Sienkiewicz influence almost wholly alien to his later work, yet still quite appealing.
I highly recommend "Violent Cases" to anyone with a more mature taste in comic books and to fans of Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean's body of work. Although an early effort, "Violent Cases" clearly presages the glory to come for this most successful comic book collaboration.
Proof positive that comics can be great literature........1999-08-18
This is the comic you should hand to anyone who says "Comics are for kids!" Absolutely beautifully written, this evocative and dark tale about the nature of childhood memories (like the other volume, Mr. Punch) is simply fabulous. So many lines made me stop and think "Oh, now that's perfect." I am frequently stunned by just how very good Mr. Gaiman's writing is. Mr. McKean's artwork isn't something to sneeze at either. Go find this book! And while you're at it, do yourself a favour and find another spectacular Gaiman/McKean collaboration "Signal to Noise"
Gaiman & McKean em sua formação.......1999-07-16
Violent Cases.
