Book Description

" . . . It is in the nature of man to both think and express himself symbolically. Moreover, the power of symbols is magnified when a society has broadly shared experiences, a deep knowledge of its cultural traditions, and common sentiments about those experiences and traditions. The fact that these conditions exist in Japan to a striking degree has insured that the country continues to enjoy a cultural life meaningfully enriched by the use of symbols."

So begins Merrily Baird's definitive guide to the symbols of Japan. Begining with a brief but insightful explanation of the development of symbols throughout Japanese history, the book looks at thematic motifs encountered in both the classical fine arts and the applied arts. The motifs are organized according to broad thematic categories such as "the cosmos, heaven and earth" and "animals of the land and sea," among others, allowing for broad reading on a number of topics of interest to a wide variety of readers, including collectors of Asian art and students of Japan.

Nearly every symbol is illustrated with fine examples of art and design from major public and private collections, offering the reader a wealth of visual information to enrich the expert commentary on each subject. Beautiful objects of a variety of media are represented: painting, sculpture, woodblock prints, netsuke and inro.

The book is the culmination of more than twenty years of research by the author, much of which was conducted while she lived in Japan. Baird's text reflects recent developments in Japanese scholarship but her prose is as accessible as it is informative, making this book an indispensable volume for both those already familiar with Japanese culture and those newly introduced to its rich complexities.

In this indispensable guide to Japanese symbols, the author, Merrily Baird, offers the reader the most lucid study of the symbolism of Japan's fine and applied arts in print today. Organized according to broad thematic categories, nearly evey symbol is illustrated with fine examples of art and design from major public and private collections in the U.S., Europe, and Japan. The book is organized to allow collectors of East Asian Art and students of Japan to both research specific symbols and read broadly on such diverse topics as plants and flowers, animals of the land and sea, demons and dieties, among others. As beautiful as it is informative, Symbols of Japan is destined to be the cornerstore of every art and design library.

5 out of 5 stars Symbols of Japan, Thematic Motifs in Art & Design.......2001-06-09

This is a long awaited book which succinctly lists and describes the symbolism seen in the Japanese arsts, making the viewing of the works much more interesting and enjoyable. The history , where they originated, how when and where they are to this day, used. The colors for different ages and seasons. How they have changed over the centuries. Surprisingly, I found some similarities in the our and other western ideas that are used in much the same way as the eastern. The information is deep and scholarly, yet reading it is not a chore.

4 out of 5 stars A general, somewhat dry study of Japanese symbols.......2001-05-29

The book is organized by themes. Each chapter is a group of symbols. The chapters are: 1 - Cosmos, Heaven, & Earth; 2 - Trees & their fruits; 3 - Diverse plants; 4 - Birds & insects; 5 - Land & sea animals; 6 - Demons, deities, and figural groups; 7 - Religion & good fortune; 8 - Objects of everyday life; 9 - Music, board games, and cultural pursuits;

Within each chapter, each subject is treated alphabetically. So for example for Ch. 4, subjects treated are: ...., Bamboo shoots, Beans, Bellflower, Bracken, Bush Clover, Chrysantemum,....

The information is there, no question. I was looking into what the heck was that egg-shaped 'tama' that I've seen associated with the Inari fox several times on netsukes, now I know (it's a wish granting jewel.) The 2 reproaches I would make are the following:

First, the information is there but it's a very dry reading. So for example in the case of the tama & Inari fox, I know now what a tama is, but I would have loved a little bit more info on why it is associated to the Inari fox, why it's shaped like an egg, etc. Basically, I would have liked some info on the legend behind the symbol.

Second, the book hesitates between being a scholarly reference book (somewhat dry content) and an entry level one (1 inch deep and 1 mile wide.) For example, the Chrysantemum gets as much treatment as the Cherry Tree (FYI, a full page), but the author only mentions that it is an imperial emblem once, en passant, in the last paragraph (as if any reader, of course, would already know that.) She also doesn't talk about how the Kikumon is used by artists who had been such authorized by the imperial family as an endorsement / reward.

The book is quite well illustrated with generally at least 1 plate per page. Illustrating ALL themes would have required 2 more books! Some of the pictures are of unusual subjects such as modern jpz art pieces that I at least had not had the opportunity to see before, or a couple of amber netsuke. Loads of inro boxes, netsuke, and prints. I have not seen a single sword blade (but there's at least 1 tsuba.) There are a great quantity of small size example of mons, typically a couple for each key theme (e.g., 2 for each of Stars, Sun, Moon, Lightning, but none on Snow, Rocks, Mountains,...)

All and all I will give it a grade of 4 out of 5, as an entry level reference book for Jpz culture *generally speaking*. If you are looking for an treaty focusing on a specific art, or one that would give you more than the raw information and include legends and stories, you might be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars An essential book for Japanese art and culture.......2001-05-07

This wonderful, fascinating, and gorgeous book is one of the most useful volumes I have ever come across. After years of wondering what visual images signify on Japanese artifacts like a wedding kimono, this remarkable book enables us to understand what they mean. If you want to know what an adulteress looks like, you will find out in this book. An adulteress wears one pot on her head for every adultery. The puzzling world of the netsuke, in which men often sport frogs on their heads, is explained here. The index is entirely useful, so that anything can be found quickly. I looked up "tanuki" (like our raccoon) and "hair," and found a wealth of information immediately. This book is so beautiful it is enough simply to look at it, but it also gives the reader access into deep understanding of Japanese culture. You will amass an enormous understanding without even being aware of it. Merrily Baird has gone ardously and exhaustively afield, and the result is a book that is astonishingly readable, often funny, and completely sound. I intend to give this book to friends interested in art and in Japan. I hope everyone will take a look at it. Believe me, you won't stop looking very easily.

      Book Description

Duluth, Minnesota, ìThe Zenith City of the Unsalted Seas,î is located on the shores of Lake Superior. Once a center for shipping, lumber, mining, steel, railroads, grain, and one of the nationís largest ports, it housed some of the wealthiest people in the country. During the 1880s, the New York newspapers believed that within 20 years it would be larger than Chicago. ÝÝDue to all of this wealth, the city grew at a remarkable rate, yet it also suffered through several recessions that almost destroyed it. With many handsome houses and remarkable buildings, Duluthís architectural heritage is among the strongest in North America. At the turn of the 20th century, it boasted more park land and green space, per capita, than any other American city, and offered residents a lifestyle that was incomparable.

5 out of 5 stars Aweswome pictoral history of Duluth!.......2007-07-01

I bought this book for my Grandmother who has lived in Duluth her whole life and knows the story behind every building, mansion, and important Duluthians and she loved it! She recognized many of the old buildings and names, and she even learned a thing or two from it! She said it was the best book anyone has ever given her and I really enjoyed looking through it myself. I would really like a copy for myself!

5 out of 5 stars Historic photographic view of a beautiful city .......2004-10-03

The quantity and quality of photos in this book amazed me. Sheldon T. Aubut and Maryanne C. Norton do an outstanding job captioning the photographs, giving plenty of interesting information, but not enough to lose one's attention. Being born and raised in Duluth, I was surprised at how little I actually knew about the city and some of the buildings I knew so well. I couldn't put the book down.... I truly was mesmerized.

      5 out of 5 stars A Story Well Told..........2002-08-03

Sheldon T. Aubut and Maryanne C. Norton bring the history of Duluth, Minnesota's buildings to life in this book. "Duluth" starts with an early history of the Indian settlements of the Sioux and Ojibwe people, to Minnesota Point and the street car line serving both residents and businesses in the late 1800s.

Then we tour the West Downtown business district with its two-story structures where families lived on the second floor, to the West End now known as Lincoln Park. Continuing on our journey to East Downtown discovering mainly retail with fraternal organizations and theaters built in the 1870s and 1880s to the early government buildings constructed from the 1860s to 1900s and later.

Our hosts guide us through the hills, which rise from Lake Superior for a look at one of the nicest residential areas of the time. Personally, I did not know the city once had more millionaires per capita than any other city in the United States and this wealth produced many beautiful commercial buildings, homes, and bridges.

We then steer towards the East End, an area filled with the period revival homes that were much in vogue. Lastly, the "Streetcar Suburbs" where it was possible to live away from the crowded downtown area and commute, and Skyline Parkway, a roadway near the top of Duluth's hills.

"Duluth" is the perfect gift book for architectural aficionados and those that want to learn more about this area. The book offers a wonderful sampling of the city's significant structures and makes for enjoyable reading about its wonderful historic treasures.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent look at historical Duluth.......2001-10-25

Sheldon T. Aubut and Maryanne C. Norton's 'Duluth, Minnesota' gives an inexpensive look into the history and architecture of this picturesque city. I wish it had been available before my last trip up there last year. I will definitely re-read it before my next visit. The book's easy-to-read conversational style keeps you moving through, and the photographs tell a fascinating story. Very highly recommended for anyone with an interest in this part of the country.

5 out of 5 stars Handy guide book tells Duluth's story well.......2001-09-25

Sheldon T. Aubut and Maryanne C. Nortonýs ýDuluth, Minnesotaý allows readers to glimpse Duluthýs impressive past without spending $50 to $100 on a large format coffee table book
The medium format paperback, which sells for $19.95 (part of Arcadia Publishingýs Images of America series), is big enough for large, clear photos that give readers an idea of the wealth and power the late 19th century Duluth leaders enjoyed. The city is broken into several sections or neighborhoods, outlining the history of each ý mainly in photo captions. The authors are able to give a solid background on city history without bogging the casual reader down and without allowing large gray blocks of text to mar the book.
The stories and photos of several people who helped build Duluth and some of the celebrities who had connections with it are interspersed with historic and a few contemporary photos. President Rutherford B. Hayes owned property there and singer Bob Dylan was born in Duluth, to name two.
The captions under the historic photos tell readers what they most want to know: what the buildings were used for, what year they were built, and what became of them. The authors give enough architectural detail to help casual readers see what a Richardsonian Romanesque or Shingle house looked like, without sending one scurrying for a dictionary of architectural terms. This is an entertaining and handy little book to have, whether someone has visited Duluth or not. For someone who IS contemplating a visit, it would be an ideal guide book. I would definitely recommend it.

      Book Description

Spring Grove: Minnesota's First Norwegian Settlement is a tribute to the state's earliest Norwegian emigrants, and to generations of Norwegian Americans who have made this small farming community amongst deep valleys, fjord-like bluffs, and winding streams their true vesterheim. It is a tale told through striking historic photographs, many previously unreleased, and personal narratives, often humorous and always insightful. The area was first settled in the 1850s by pioneers like James Smith, who, inspired by the landscape, named the place Spring Grove. Smith was followed by the likes of Big Ole Gulbransgutton, who chased crooked land surveyors out of town with his bare fist; by the innovative Mons Fladager, whose business acumen earned him the title of"Father of Spring Grove"; and by the 20th-century cartoonist Peter J. Rosendahl, whose work gave a comical voice to the challenges of cultural assimilation. Spring Grove: Minnesota's First Norwegian Settlement also conveys the universality of the Norwegian immigrant experience, and anyone with Norwegian roots who desires to learn more about their ancestors will find it an enjoyable read.

My brother sent me a genelogy of our family. My grandparents lived in Hallingdal and were from the Ole Olsen clan until they arrived in Chicago. They were given the name of Halling because there were already too many Olsens. The genelogy my brother wrote was interesting but boring. Chad Muller made information come alive and exciting. Can't wait for his next book.

5 out of 5 stars If you enjoy well written non fiction you're in for a treat........2003-12-07

Like John McPhee, Muller has the ability to take a select subject and make it fascinating. Even if you are not a history buff or a genealogy enthusiast, you will find yourself drawn in and captivated with the characters and tales from Spring Grove. I learned a lot from this book. Muller's descriptions and attention to detail point out many features of historical photographs that would otherwise have escaped our notice. It's very interesting to really think about and comprehend what day to day life was like for the early settlers in Minnesota. This book offers a glimpse into some of the odd immigrant customs carried over from the old country, for example, some farm families, after purchasing a farm would then change their surname to the name of the previous owner or the founder of the farm. Also, I was amazed to realize that many people did not own horses and since there were no other people living in this area and therefore no public transportation, if you wanted to get somewhere you had to walk and it might take a month to walk there!

Anyone who enjoys well written non fiction will enjoy Muller's work. Buy this book, you'll be glad you did.

The heavily wooded area of western Hennepin County, known as the "Big Woods" to early explorers, slowly transformed into three trade centers with the first permanent settlers staking their claims to land in 1854. The initial pioneers emigrated from such faraway places as Germany, Ireland, England, and France in search of a better life, and the fact that many of their ancestors still reside in the area demonstrates they found just that. Rogers, Hassan Township, and Fletcher Remembered is a photographic tour of three early trade centers that formed a community. The pictures, newspaper clippings, and stories provided by local residents and businesses capture the rich history of the area and illustrate how emphasis on church, education, commerce, and entertainment created the endless opportunities enjoyed today.

In 1942, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Sinclair Lewis wrote that the Lanesboro area was ìÖworthy of Vermont in its sturdy quietude. Throughout this district, secret little valleys branch off from the major valleys of the Root River, and there is room enough and view enough for 11,000 poets.î ÝÝPromoted in the late 1860s to east coast investors as an idyllic retreat, Lanesboro was established as a resort community and soon realized an impressive boom due to its unparalleled waterpower. Progressing not as a tourist area, but rather along other avenues of commerce, the community once hailed as the ëbiggest little town in southeastern Minnesotaí fell off the fast track of growth before its charm could be diminished by too much progress. Today Lanesboroís beautiful 1870s downtown is on the National Register of Historic Places, and the entire city is a haven for the artsóa showcase for the natural beauty that Sinclair Lewis touted more than sixty years ago. Book Description

Poeple in Southeastern Minnesota are a small yet distinct group of people; small, because in a world-view they are few in number, emigrated from a small area in Poland, and settled in a relatively small area similar to the area they left; distinctive, because of the cohesiveness of the community, and moreso, because the Kashubian language is unusual even in Poland. ÝÝThis book describes the culture of the Kashubian community, illustrated with over 200 vintage images. It salvages a history that has almost been amalgamated into the swirling melting pot because of the difficulty of their language, the spelling of their names, and the lack of recognition of their efforts. From the first Polish-American fighters who gave their lives to the Civil War, to the lumber mills that offered so many new residents means of survival, these photographs visually outline the experiences of the earliest Kashubian immigrants, and a history nearly lost.

This book is a thouroughly interesting history of the Polish ethnic community in eastern Winona, Minnesota. While most of the book concerns Winona and the people who gave the city the shining domes of "St. Stan's", it also places things into geographical and historical context by going back to the place in Poland where much of the community came from, and going west to some of the places settled by Poles who left Winona.

If you are interested in the history of Winona, Minnesota, don't miss this one (even though Winona is not in the title). I'm not even Polish, and I found this book worthwhile.

          Book Description

Sauk Rapids and Benton County tells the rich and interesting history of one of the oldest counties in the state of Minnesota. Benton County was named for Thomas Hart Benton, long time Senator from Missouri, for his efforts in securing the passage of the Homestead Act that helped early settlers, their families, and their descendants live and prosper in this region. Sauk Rapids, one of the five original townships created in Benton County in 1858, was named for the rapids of the Mississippi River near downtown. For several years the village was the northernmost point of steamboat navigation on the Mississippi for passengers coming up from the Twin Cities. ÝÝFeaturing nearly 200 vintage photographs, Sauk Rapids and Benton County takes the reader on a historic tour of the past from the Indian settlements of the Ojibwe, to the Great Northern Railroad, to the Sauk Rapids cyclone of 1886, to the Benton County ancestors, and to their present-day descendants with their businesses, industries, and daily activities. This is a great little book with a wealth of photos from Benton County. Though St. Cloud has boomed west-ward, the east side of the river including Sauk Rapids has a rich heritage and this book captures this very well.

I breezed through the book in one evening...the book has little text and many photos, which to me, is a good thing. The value of this book is in the pictures. The author did a nice job of providing history "snippets" without straying too far from the topic at hand. Also, the pictures were annotated well...calling out little details that might have been missed if the author had not pointed them out.

The photos of the cyclone were amazing! Also, the cities that donated to the rebuilding effort was a great list...it indicates this disaster drew national attention.

          ---------------
          Cons:
          ---------------
The book ends rather abruptly and uncermoniously with a couple photos of church cemetaries. It might have been nice to direct people to other resources or "further reading" information.

Though street names are mentioned, a modern map of Sauk Rapids, Rice, and Foley would have been nice to help visualize where some of these buildings in the pictures once stood (or maybe they're still standing???...I'm particularily curious where the sawmills were???). Also, a illustrated arial map of the path of the cyclone would have been a nice addition.

          ---------------
          Conclusion:
          ---------------
Should be required reading for all Sauk Rapids and Foley (and even Sartell and St. Cloud) high-school students (and residents).

I'm giving it 4 stars due to the fact that I feel it was missing some illustrations to show where buildings were. But, otherwise, the content and photos are 5 stars all the way!

I'll gladly make it a fixture on my coffee table!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sauk Rapids, county history come alive.......2002-10-20

What's the best way to get people interested in history? Pictures, of course.

Ronald Christopher Zurek pieces together almost 200 vintage photographs into a regional history in "Sauk Rapids and Benton County."

Going back as far as the 1850s, the book explores the industries, businesses and the people that have contributed to the area's growth.

James J. Hill's influence on the railroads and the tiny saloon that was to become Coborn's Superstore are just some of the highlights. Group portraits dominate the book, capturing the lifestyles of granite workers, young men leaving for World War II and operators connecting telephone conversations at the turn of the century. And we can't forget the Prohibition era federal officers reveling in their moonshine bust.

The Ojibwe American Indians who originally lived in the Benton County area serve as a brief introduction to the rest of the book. One chapter focuses on Sauk Rapids' fatal 1886 cyclone, with photos of the destruction.

          5 out of 5 stars A pleasant journey through Middle America's past.......2002-07-29

In "Images of America - Sauk Rapids and Benton County", Ronald Christopher Zurek has brought a collection of vintage photos and text into a cohesive history of the early years of that region of Minnesota. I have to admit that before reading this books I had no idea that sauerkraut was made in big wooden vats, but the photos from the Foley Pickle Factory certainly enlightened me. This book is a wonderful look into the past of a Midwestern small community. From the early Ojibwe and Sioux settlements to the daily life of the European settlers it fascinates us with high quality black and white photos.

The history of the railroads, the "Sauk Rapids Cyclone of 1886", the vintage family photos and all the other elements of this book should be a compass to the current residents of the Benton County proclaiming their heritage. The next time I pass through that region I shall have to spend time looking for the landmarks that still exist, and pondering the ones that have passed.

This book is "a keeper" and will be a welcome addition to my history collection.

4 out of 5 stars A prime text for how to draw funny animals........1999-09-20

I lucked into this book a few years ago, and have returned to it time and again while drawing funny animals. It fully endorses the Disney/greeting card style that artists like Walt Kelly and Wallace Tripp have used so well. The book is laid out alphabetically by animal, which is useful, and includes some full-page pics. Some unusual animals like sloths and camels are included, but I can't figure the lack of a section on foxes. There are a couple of poor points. I bought the trade paperback, and its glue gave out immediately. I love the book so much that I'm springing for the hardcover now. Also, there is very little text, and what is there is not of much use. All is all, the artist of anthropomorphics will find this a very valuable text.
