Book Description

This book will have beginning artists of all ages drawing faces that are strikingly realistic and detailed. Artist Carrie Stuart Parks honed her fast and effective drawing skills as a professional forensic artist. Here she makes drawing fun and easy, showing beginners how to render vivid self portraits and portraits of others, all in a matter of hours.

Artists will successfully learn how to master proportions and map facial features accurately. They will then study shapes within a composition and learn to draw them realistically. Lastly, artists will study the subject's values and use them to bring life and accuracy to each portrait. A final "checking" step helps artists capture heightened realism and accuracy.

This book features clear step-by-step instructions, before-and-after examples from students, and proven drawing exercises used to train artists throughout the country.

5 out of 5 stars Secrets to Drawing Realistic Faces.......2007-04-11

This book was recommended to me by someone who is an artists for crime victims. It was used in the classes she went to. I am practicing drawing eyes at the moment. I have to say that I am now drawing the best eyes ever. This book explains more that where to put the features. It explains how to make the features come to life.

5 out of 5 stars Drawing Techniques Analyzed and Simplified .......2007-03-23

Again, I checked this one out from the library before purchasing. I did not want another book that just told me to sit down and 'draw what you see'. When it comes to faces, the proportions are the hardest part for me. This book goes into great detail explaining how to 'measure' the features of a real person, not the imaginary kind we see in fashion layouts. I have actually seen great improvement after only a few drawings. The best way to improve is to do separate studies of each facial feature until we get them right, and this book explains how. Practice is what brings the progress. Finding time is the problem. This book makes it very clear that anyone with good eyesight can learn to draw peoples' faces. It's just like learning any other skill. This woman teaches this course to police artists, ordinary people with no previous artistic training. It works!

5 out of 5 stars This book really helped!.......2007-02-08

I love this book, I got it from the library, but I had to have my own copy. I was able to actually capture a likeness for the first time! Her technique of measuring can be applied to more than just faces. I bought her second book, but this one is better.

I am very happy with this book, gives you a step by step insight on portraits. This book was also shipped to me within two days, fast and efficient!!

Realistic Figure Drawing
by Joseph Sheppard

When I review DRAWING books, the first question I ask is, "Is this for BEGINNERS?" Because I feel an obligation to the book buyer to provide good information, and also to prevent a beginning student from being discouraged, and feeling that they are defective, or ....just cannot get it.

It does not seem to occur to the buyer that many authors just cannot teach. Instinct seems to suggest that that if book gets published, it must contain credible instruction by someone who knows how to teach, and everyone seems to desire to cash in on the Big Bucks market of HOW-TO-DRAW. It may seem surprising that this is just not so. Perhaps as many as half of all drawing books are not very good for beginners. I know. I've gotten familiar with most of the books on the market, and I know what I'm looking for in good instruction.

Page 3 addresses the subject of the canon of PROPORTIONS, the ratio of head, limb and torso size to the rest of the body. That's typical of a beginner book.

So is "Realistic Figure Drawing" for a BEGINNER? I believe the author, SHEPPARD, is confused; but I've seen this before. Even though Sheppard can boast credentials as an art instructor, we must ask if his book is good instruction.

Chapter Two, "RENDERING FORM IN LIGHT & SHADE". This shows simple SPHERES and CYLINDERS and the shading patterns used in most elementary drawing books.

Throughout the book, Sheppard's final anatomical sketches appear. I troubles me very much when an author uses completed and "advanced" level examples in a drawing book. For one thing, no beginner can copy them nor come close. The other issue is that beginners ought to work at producing rough shapes, such as are represented by the HUMAN PUPPETS, stick figures, block figures, or figures consisting of egg or triangle shapes. These are missing.

"Realistic Figure Drawing" does contain examples of the author's "5-minute rough sketches", but these appear at the end of the book, on pages 107 to 131. That is why I feel so puzzled as to how to rate this book. Either it is or isn't for BEGINNERS, and if the author is unclear about who he is teaching, how can anyone decide if it is worth recommendation? This book does not seem to be a complete system of instruction, so I must give it a lower rating.

The list price of $21.95 seems a bit high.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2000-04-05

I found this book very helpful in understanding the human figure. It doesn't cover everything that I would have liked however, but it does cover a great deal of both male and female forms. With highly detailed drawings, practical techniques, and easy to understand text. This book makes an excellent addition to your drawing library.

      Book Description

This full-color monograph showcases Doig's first show in a public gallery dedicated solely to his paper works of the past 14 years. An artist who credits such inspirations as Hopper, Munch and Matisse, Doig re-works and re-interprets images drawn from photographs, film stills, postcards, paintings and even album covers to explore notions of memory and fantasy. Doig's haunting and atmospheric work is often compared to the early 20th-century paintings of the Symbolists and Surrealists and is seen as having revived the Romantic spirit. He was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1994 and has been featured in the 54th International Carnegie Exhibition as well as many leading museums including the MoMA, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Tate, and the Dallas Museum of Art. Exhibition Dates: Dallas Museum of Art beginning September 13, 2005 The Gallery of Windsor beginning December 4, 2005 Art Gallery of Ontario beginning March 8, 2006.

5 out of 5 stars One of the absolute best, and I've read most of them.......2002-08-16

In the midst of a very terrible time in my life, I stumbled across this book. It blew me away. I have read many, many books on suffering and dealing with life's tragedies. This one is different in that it does not simply regurgitate the standard pat answers to why suffering exists and what to do when it happens ("Trials are actually a blessing! They'll make you a better person! Embrace them!" -- Give me a break.). Joel Freeman avoids preachy, sanctimonious language and never gets condescending. He gives you practical strategies for dealing with not only suffering and grief but the accompanying feelings of unfairness and "God's absence" that go along with these. My faith in God was strenghthened by my having read this book.

5 out of 5 stars SO, WHAT DID YOU EXPECT?.......2002-04-02

Sometimes life isn't fair, but we expect it to be...why else would we be so angry and hurt when it isn't. We wonder:

                      * If God is a God of love, why is there so much suffering in the world?
                      * Why do the wicked seem to prosper?
                      * Why do terrible things seem to happen to nice people?
                      * Why does life have to hurt so much?
                      * Isn't there an easier way to grow?
                      * Can any meaning be found in suffering?

Endorsed by the likes of Joni Eareckson Tada, Billy Graham, Paul Meier and others, When Life Isn't Fair: Making Sense Out of Suffering (Hardcover, 144 pages) presents helpful insight, poignant stories and touches of humor in revealing a biblical perspective on these questions. Written in a highly readable and thought-provoking style, author Joel A. Freeman, Ph.D. encourages readers to seek a greater understanding of their feelings through personal reflection. He also prompts discussion about their expectations of themselves, others and God.

Published by New leaf Press as part of the Trusting the Master series, Dr. Freeman's newly revised and reprinted book contains Bible verses that speak to specific situations. Drawing on his years of experience in counseling people through their grief and suffering, Dr. Freeman provides a framework upon which can be found true, lasting peace and security.

As a State of Maryland Board Certified Professional Counselor, Joel A. Freeman, Ph.D. holds a Master of Science degree in counseling from Loyola College (Baltimore) and also a Ph.D. in the same discipline. He served as mentor/chaplain for the NBA Washington Wizards for 19 years ('79-'98). As president of The Freeman Institute™, Dr. Freeman conducts team building/leadership/diversity/change management initiatives for leaders of other nations, government agencies, corporations and faith-based organizations. This story of spiritual discovery and opposition as a result of convictions should resonate at some place with every person trying to get ahead in life. In this case Rev. Nace is struggling to find himself theologically while at the same time fending off annoyances such as church members and denominations who can't get it. A real story of the intolerance and shallowness of some religious crowds. A searing personal account of loss and redemption, although one gets the feeling there is still more redemption to take place. A lot of supernatural happenings here and challenging stuff.

2 out of 5 stars Politically Correct Advice to Graduates.......2002-09-18

I looked, but could only find eight or nine provocative excerpts from commencement addresses. The remainder were politically correct generalities. A large number of addresses were delivered at Smith College and Sara Lawrence College. If you want to get the advice of Steinem, Winfrey, Jordan, King, Edelman, Cosby, Du Bois, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful compilation of witty, insightful grad. advice.......1997-06-20

"Life Isn't Fair" is a welcome surprise. I was searching for gifts for both a high school graduate and a college graduate. I was dismayed after poring through many "graduation" books which were overly sentimental, impractical and, quite frankly, boring. "Life Isn't Fair" is none of that. It's a wonderful compilation of graduation advice from a rich variety of commencement speakers. The book is thoughtfully organized by topic and, within each category, the range of opinions, ideas, concerns and humor was surprisingly diverse and entertaining. I decided this would be the right gift for my two graduating friends. (I ended up reading the entire book before I gave it away.) I definitely recommend "Life Isn't Fair" to anyone who is graduating from anywhere.
