4 out of 5 stars Great introduction.......2007-07-27

As a cardiologist with an interest in vascular imaging, this was a very good introduction. I appreciated the colloquial style and illustrations. The only critisism would be the absence of any mention of variations caused by vascular pathology

5 out of 5 stars RVT.......2006-06-03

This book is an absolute must have for anyone in the field--not just for beginners. Donald Ridgway just has a way of explaining the vascular system & scanning techniques like no other. I understand the vascular system & I learned how to scan (pretty much on my own) thanks to his book. Very helpful. Great humor. I hope Donald Ridgway writes a guide for abdominal & ob/gyn scanning in the near future.

This is an excellent book for the beginner. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A completely fair and balanced five stars.......2005-08-12

Okay, I'm the author. In all these years no one has ever put a review up here, so I'm going to do it.

This is a guide to scanning the vascular system with ultrasound. It was meant to be a vascular-sonography version of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Volkswagen Repair, or the Pete Seeger banjo book: easy to read and make sense of, and practical. It takes the reader step-by-step through protocols for scanning first carotid arteries, then lower-extremity veins, LE arteries, upper extremities, and the abdomen (though that chapter is necessarily only introductory, since that's an especially complex area). In other words, rather than theory and interpretation, this book is about how to push the probe around and get the images and Doppler--very concrete.

My feedback on this book has always been positive: people tell me that they have been able to learn the techniques with a minimum of grief.

So what the hey, I'm giving myself five stars. Excuse my towering immodesty.

Don

(P.S.: By the way, you ARDMS registry people, this is good for 16 ARDMS-approved units.)

3 out of 5 stars 3 ½* Misleading Title: More Body Than Brain.......2002-11-21

This book is really more about the organs and tissues then the brain. Because the brain regulates the entire body, the author spends an inordinate (and misleading, from the title) amount of time on topics other than the brain; for example, the different types of teeth, and the layers of the skin. For this reason, a lot of fascinating brain-related information is omitted.

The author is also a bit too glib, and this gives a very mixed tone of the serious and the off cuff: "the two are brought together by sexual intercourse (a term often shortened to `sex' when people are in a hurry"). Moreover, admonishments to care for your body (brush your teeth, exercise more, etc.) seemed out of place. On the positive side, the book has some fun illustrations (although a too cluttered at times), and the large color pictures of the organs and brain are fairly easy to understand. 62 pages, with a short glossary and an index.

5 out of 5 stars T.......1998-11-04

This book guides you through the Human body like none other with very detailed pictures and captions. It tells you about how surgeons can replace organs and how doctors look inside you body. It also gives a picture of each vital (and non-vital) organ and tells you how it works.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars It's overpriced.......2006-06-20

"The Beginner's Guide to Drawing People" by Patricia Monahan

It is way overpriced. Besides, offering a drawing book that offers FEMALE nude studies, and neglects entirely, MALE nude studies, does not make the book a bargain, especially when it is titled "Drawing PEOPLE". If a book is about drawing PEOPLE, shouldn't there be MALE people as well?

This book has 216 pages. That's twice the number of pages that most figure drawing books have, and the FOUR authors still limit it to nude female anatomy? Is that sexist, or merely neglectful?
The best "instructional" books always come from the singular vision of one author. Sure enough, this book has a "fractured" feel.

4 out of 5 stars An Inside Look at Zoology.......2005-12-06

"To find out how a car works, we take it apart and study its insides... To find out how an animal works, we take it...er, no we don't. We look in this book!" So begins Steve Parker's irreverent and informative guide to animal anatomy.

While no animals were harmed in the making, and no scalpels are required, the book provides an inside look at animals you're unlikely to find on the dissecting table. For instance, the book compares a hippo with a mosquito and shows that despite their drastic exterior differences, they share many organs with similar purposes. The guide then goes through "Slithery-Slimies" (earthworm, coral and jellyfish, starfish, squid, lobster); Bugs (dragonfly, beetle, moth, bee, scorpion, centipede); "Fins and Scales" (shark, salmon, electric eel, frog, turtle, crocodile, chameleon, python); Birds (ostrich, penguin, swallow, owl), and Mammals (whale, kangaroo, bat, elephant, tiger, monkey). Each animal is given a large, fact-filled page.

The Beginners Guide is crammed with blocks of information, so much so that it can be hard to know where to look next. Each page is generously and colorfully illustrated, and each chapter begins with a mechanical look at animals (in keeping with the car analogy).
One thing Animal Autopsy lacks, though, is information about autopsies. This is a great primer of comparative *anatomy*, but readers thirsting for the what's and how's of dissecting should look elsewhere. The other omission is in definitions; readers might be frustrated at what's not included in the one-page glossary.

The Beginner's Guide to Animal Autopsy is a great resource for kids wanting to know more about zoology.
