Contrary to Redmund's review, this is a tidy collection of one of history's most underrated daughtsmen. For those like me, who do not like Ruben's paintings (note to Redmund: Rubens had a virtual factory of workers who did most of his painting), this book is both surprising and delightful.
A Great Collection This is Not.......2002-09-19
This book is not one of the best among those in the Dover Art Library. A handful (about a half-dozen) of pictures are good with sufficient details and/or a tight organization to be appreciated. Most are so-so. Some are definitely fillers. It does not help that Rubens himself, according to the Publisher's Note, did not think highly of his own drawings and did not even sign a single one of them. All told, this selection is not impressive.
Rubens's paintings, rather than his drawings, should rightly be his legacy.

This is an excellent book on the drawings of Rubens. The works are very diverse and a whole range of different media are used. This is a great book to study for an art student.

This magnificent book presents a selection of drawings by Rubens. The color reproductions are beautiful and sensitive - a must for all those who enjoy to look and learn from this artist. A thoroughly enjoyable book and truly professional presentation.

A simple mission lies at the heart of Rubens: to give the most complete picture of the great Flemish master as possible. No fewer than 163 paintings, sketches, and drawings by the artist, plus nine tapestries, are put to this worthy task. A faithful, objective understanding of Rubens arises, from his beginnings under the influence of his master Otto Venius and Italian art, right through to the end of his career, when he basked in a major Spanish commission. Rubens is at home in all genres, and all are represented here: from landscapes to portraits, from altarpieces to genre scenes, and historical paintings too, of course. Even the talents of the decorator are revealed in his painted sketches, drawings, and tapestries. For this publication, the master's oeuvre is divided into five groupings: Rubens' Beginnings, Rubens and Italy, The Middle-Class Patron, Official Commissions, and Secular Subject Matter. Through the inclusion of tapestries, particular attention is paid to the genesis of his art. Works such as Descent from the Cross, Laying in the Sepulchre, The Stoning of Saint Stephen, and three altarpieces created for the city of Lille's churches and convents are included. From this impressive homage to Rubens, the general reader, connoisseur, and historian will all hopefully come to know Rubens better, and also be stimulated by the juxtaposition of works never presented in this way before. Rubens.......2006-05-10
I found this book to be dissapointing. The reproductions are small and far from a comprehensive catalogue (Though a comprehensive catalogue would be tough considering Rubens painted over 1700 paintings). The most dissapointing aspect was the size of the prints. The text is generic art-book text, and nothing special. I understand that this book was made to represent an exhibition, but I was expecting more for my money. I'm not saying that it's a bad book, just that it is perhaps overpriced especialy considering it was orignally sixty dollars. I recommend buying "Rubens: A Master in the Making" and "Peter Paul Rubens" by Gilles Neret, a book from the wonderful Taschen publishing company. For both of those books, which together come out to about the same price as this one, you will get more for your money. If you really want a great book on Rubens and you don't mind small reproductions I highly recomend buying "Rubens" by Kristen Belkin from the Phaidon Art & Ideas series (a great series), and it's only thirteen dollars online. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a markedly bad book, it just didn't meet my expectations. I wanted large, detailed, color reproductions, and there was very few in this book. I should give credit where credit is due and admit that there were some portraits that I had not seen before and was pleased to discover, and also that there were numerous reproductions of tapestries that Rubens designed that I had also not seen before... hence the three stars.
Not quite what I was looking for.......2006-03-09
This is a good exhibition catalogue for the Lille showing of Ruben's work, but is not a comprehensive catalogue raisonne of his work. Since a number of his masterpieces could not be shipped to Lille, they are not included in the book - with the exception of some small black and white reproductions. It would have been great to have large colour plates of works such as the Samson and Delilah in the National Gallery in London.
In spite of this limitation the book is definitely still worth having: the reproductions are excellent and the selection of works is representative.

This is a really short Powers volume, as the words 'Kaotic Chic' appear again, seen near a corpse. There is one woman that is really, really, really unhappy about The Powers and what they are allowed to do.
Basically, what you have here is a commentary on the ethics and legality of those individuals operating, and the devastating effects their conflicts can have on those around them. This is all wrapped up around a crazy murder case.
Decent, but not the series' best........2006-04-21

Welcome to a world where regular, everyday mortals and superpowers coexist side-by-side-- and, unlike most such worlds, there are a whole lot of people with superpowers in this one. Bendis and artist Mike Oeming pose the question of what such a world would be like, and for the most part, they've given us quite a satisfactory answer.
Anarchy, the fifth Powers book, hands us a string of murders of Powers, and a detective squad who can't make heads or tales of it. Finally, they go to the one person they think can get a handle on things: Christian Walker, dismissed from the force a year before for giving an interview to the press.
If you like the series, you'll continue to. Anarchy isn't going to change many minds one way or the other about the series; it's good, but not great. ***
The Powers universe gets darker........2004-03-12
The series by Bendis and Oeming appeared, at first light, to be a police procedural applied to superheroes; "NYPD Blue" cops exploring superhero-related murders. That was interesting enough for the first several story arcs. With this particular story arc (collecting Powers issues 21-24) the focus widens to reveal a widespread antipathy towards the Powers. It's what would have happened if extremists like the Ku Klux Klan or the Weather Underground found popular support for their murderous plans. It's no longer just "murders with capes" - it's a society turning against people it once adored. It's like the stories of "celebrities in trouble" that fill our news. (It's also much like comic book fans who have "outgrown" the superheroes of their youth, and how they hate their early obscession.) The author and writer have said the "Powers" story is building up to a final conclusion - although they insist they aren't even half finished with the stories they want to tell - and this volume, slimmer than most of the "Powers" trade paperbacks, is an important step on that road.
It Just Keeps Getting Better.......2004-02-11
Deena Pilgrim must solve a new mystery involving a series of brutal murders on superheroes, but these deaths also bring a new perspective into the forefront concerning how superheroes affect everyday lives.
Bendis and Oeming have produced one of the best arcs yet in this innovative title. Bendis' writing is, of course, very good as we see the best characterization yet of the series in a story that is darker and more serious than earlier stories. Bendis pulls out all of the stops as we see Deena when she is pushed to her limits, but we also see a tender, caring side as she confronts her relationship with her partner. Also, many of the past story arcs finally come into play as well as some heavy foreshadowing that alludes to future arcs. Oeming's cartoon noir art matched with Pantazis' dark, yet at times very vibrant colors combine to create visuals that perfectly match the story. Also included in this book is an interesting interview between the creators on their own careers. With better storytelling and improved artwork over the first storylines, "Powers" continues to be one of the best, most original titles in years. Keep them coming!
NOTE: This book is recommended for older readers due to strong language and violence/gore (a comic book equivalent of an R-rated movie).
