Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This was fun.......2006-03-15

OK, the nudity part was what made this book intriguing, but it isn't lewd. GREAT paint jobs. Each photograph or series of photos tells a very short story. They are accompanied by quotations which enhance or explain the photographs. Give this book as a gift to someone who appreciates photography, art, humor and the human experience. The entire volume takes about 15 or 20 minutes to thoroughly enjoy, but you may want to repeat the process a couple of times. Some of the camouflage paint jobs are simply amazing!

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL.......2005-12-10

I have long admired Jo Ann Gair for her amazing artistic ability applied to human form. I was so pleased to enjoy the funny and heartwarming work of art by this extremely talented woman. The care, production value and attention to detail in each image is astounding. A true gem of artistry and humor to enchant your friends and family.

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS!.......2005-12-07

This book is for everyone! Joanne shows her enormous talent and sense of humor. What a pleasure to look at and share with others. This will be around a long time.

5 out of 5 stars genius.......2005-10-30

Imaginative and fun. The beautiful illusions only co-exist with the storybook like photographs.

5 out of 5 stars The Artistic Maestro of Illusion.......2005-10-07

Joanne Gair's book is a work of art! It's filled with many pages of comedic and colorful human canvases. Paint A 'Licious is much more humorous than first expected, and I was quite impressed with its magnificant creative concepts. The details and colors are amazing. Also, I love the fact that in the back she has photographs of each photo shoot to give the novice an idea of the complexity involved. For any art lover, or just anyone with a sense of humor, this book is a must! Look out, Anne Geddes!

      Book Description

How many times have you looked at a woodcarving project, wished you could make it, then backed away because it required some technique that was beyond you? You'll be surprised how your woodcarving world can expand with the addition of the invaluable tips you'll find in this collection. Seven of the best woodcarvers around show you some of their trickier creations, and then tell you how they made them. The first one is a sculpture called Diatoms, and it expresses a wonderfully imaginative vision of microscopic water plants in a flowing stream. It required a lot of different chiseling and gouging operations, from delicate dragonfly wings to a difficult hollowed-out fossil form. But all are within your reach, now that John Mignone has explained them. The same is true of carving lifelike human torsos. And intricate carved vases. And realistic facial likenesses in carvings of Larry Bird, Ted Williams, and Babe Ruth. Plus more secrets for improving your carvings of birds, using workholders, carving stone, and much more. 96 pages (all in color), 8 1/4 x 11 3/4.

          Book Description

Markov random field (MRF) theory provides a basis for modeling contextual constraints in visual processing and interpretation. It enables us to develop optimal vision algorithms systematically when used with optimization principles. This book presents a comprehensive study on the use of MRFs for solving computer vision problems. The book covers the following parts essential to the subject: introduction to fundamental theories, formulations of MRF vision models, MRF parameter estimation, and optimization algorithms. Various vision models are presented in a unified framework, including image restoration and reconstruction, edge and region segmentation, texture, stereo and motion, object matching and recognition, and pose estimation. This second edition includes the most important progress in Markov modeling in image analysis in recent years such as Markov modeling of images with "macro" patterns (e.g. the FRAME model), Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods, reversible jump MCMC. This book is an excellent reference for researchers working in computer vision, image processing, statistical pattern recognition and applications of MRFs. It is also suitable as a text for advanced courses in these areas.

                Description:
The developing brain is traditionally viewed to possess a great compensatory potential. Here we ask whether visual processing of point-light displays depicting human walking is compromised in adolescents who were born premature (between 27 and 33 gestation weeks) and suffer early bilateral damage to periventricular brain regions. Combining psychophysics with volumetric analysis of structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we found that even relatively small periventricular parieto-occipital lesions may result in long-lasting breakdown of visual processing of point-light displays. Analysis of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves revealed higher susceptibility of the patients' perceptual system to camouflage of a point-light figure. The lack of difference in sensitivity between former preterms with normal MRI scan and term-born controls indicates that perceptual deficiencies in patients with periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) are not simply due to premature birth. Most importantly, sensitivity in patients even with mild PVL was lower than in both control groups. Display 180^o inversion in the image plane, which is known to impair processing of point-light displays, resulted in a substantial reduction of sensitivity so that it no longer differed between the groups. Despite the social and ecological significance of human locomotion, the capacity of the brain to detect biological motion is substantially modulated by periventricular lesions even if they occur very early in life. The findings point to specific restrictions on the brain's spontaneous compensatory plasticity in perceptual development.

                  Description:
The paper presented a design of reaction-controlled chemiluminescence (CL) imaging analysis method. The design was based on controlling pH to initiate CL reaction and obtain high sensitivity. The pH value of CL reaction was controlled by ammonia, which was produced by injecting NaOH solution to NH"4Cl solution, and the amount of ammonia could be adjusted by varying concentration, pumping time and flow rate of NaOH solution or varying concentration of NH"4Cl solution. The pH of CL reagents in 96-well microtiter plates increased continuously from the same initial value due to the absorbance of ammonia and the relative CL intensity increased with the increasing pH. Based on above reaction-controlled design, the CL reaction in 96 wells could be initiated at the same time and the total CL signal of each well could be monitored. As results of above operation, a high sensitivity and better reproducibility could be obtained. A luminol, H"2O"2, CL system for determination of hemoglobin (Hb) was selected to validate the presented design. The CL intensity was proportional with the concentration of Hb in the range of 1.0x10^-^9 to 1.0x10^-^7moll^-^1 and the detection limit was 3.0x10^-^1^0moll^-^1 (3@s), the relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) for 11 parallel measurements of 1.0x10^-^8moll^-^1 Hb was 2.7%.

                    Description:
A simple, sensitive and high throughput chemiluminescence (CL) imaging method was described for the determination of recombinant human tumor necrosis factor-@a (rh TNF-@a). The proposed method has the advantage of showing the specificity of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), sensitivity of enhanced chemiluminescence (ECL), and high throughput of CL imaging method. In this system, 96 well transparent microtiter plates were used as solid phase materials. The method was based on the use of two monoclonal antibodies against rh TNF-@a, one ''capture'' antibody and one labeled with horseradish peroxidase (HRP), in a ''sandwich'' ELISA format. A cooled CCD camera has been applied to image the weak chemiluminescence from the ECL. The CL intensity was proportional with the concentration of rh TNF-@a in the range of 9.0-312.0pgml^-^1 and the detection limit was 1pgml^-^1. The proposed method has been successfully applied to the determination of rh TNF-@a in human serum, the reliability of the assay method was established by parallel determination and by standard-addition method (R.S.D.=4.7%, recoveries=94-108%).

                      Description:
In this paper, a novel gold nanoparticles based protein immobilization method was designed. Biocomposites of gold nanoparticles and proteins were successfully coated on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) plates and polystyrene microtiter plates. The proteins could be immobilized on solid materials with high density and better bioactivity. Based on above design, chemiluminescence (CL) imaging assay for determination of H"2O"2 and recombinant human interleukin-6 (rHu IL-6) was developed. The linear range and the loading capability were greatly improved when compared with imaging assay performed with direct proteins immobilization. Under the selected experimental conditions, a linear relationship was obtained between the CL intensity and the concentration of H"2O"2 in the range of 1.0x10^-^6 to 1.0x10^-^4molL^-^1, and rHu IL-6 in the range of 2.0-312.0pgmL^-^1. The detection limits were 2x10^-^7molL^-^1 (3@s) for H"2O"2 and 0.5pgmL^-^1 for rHu IL-6 with relative standard deviation of 3.8% for 3.0x10^-^5molL^-^1 H"2O"2, and 4.4% for 39.0pgmL^-^1 rHu IL-6. This method has been applied to the determination of rHu IL-6 in human serum with satisfactory results.

                        Description:
Investigations of inorganic oligomers are important in both chemistry and physiology. In this contribution, we propose a laser induced light scattering imaging (LSI) and a total internal reflected light scattering imaging (TIR-LSI) technique, and apply them to characterize the interactions of inorganic oligomers with biopolymer in aqueous phase and at liquid/liquid interface, respectively. In aqueous medium, synthetic chromium(III) hydrolytic oligomers (CrHO) react with DNA, and the resultant binary could be extracted into the H"2O/CCl"4 interface in the presence of triocyctyl phosphine oxide (TOPO), forming a DNA-CrHO-TOPO ternary amphipathic complex at the interface with the associate constant of 1.32x10^3mol^-^1dm^4 for a given 1.0x10^-^4moll^-^1 TOPO. Under the excitation of a 441-nm He-Cd laser light beam, the resultant light scattering and total internal reflected light scattering (TIR-LS) signals of the formed binary in aqueous phase and ternary at liquid/liquid interface could be easily captured using a common microscope coupled with a CCD camera. By digitally analyzing the CCD captures, we demonstrate that aggregations of the CrHO-DNA binary in aqueous phase and DNA-CrHO-TOPO ternary at liquid/liquid interface have occurred, respectively.

                          Description:
The efficiency and lumen output of light source for illumination system were analyzed based on Etendue, this analytical approach can predict light source collection efficiency. A new method for measuring the output intensity distribution of light source with elliptical reflector was put forward; the collection efficiency vs. Etendue curve was estimated with this technique. The Etendue was changed by moving the mobile aperture gradually and the intensity distributions were recorded by CCD camera in this measurement method. The method is very convenient and the experimental result matches well with the theoretical model.

5 out of 5 stars A Japanese Gangster Classic !.......2002-02-20

Strain is a great organized crime comic that easily rivals John Woo's greatest gangster flicks. It is basically about Mayo, a Japanese hitman who charges only $5.00 per whack because "that's all we're worth" he says. It follows his adventure through Maylasyia and other parts of Asia where he combats and eludes the Mob, paramilitary forces, and the local law enforcement.

As for the art......BEAUTIFUL! Ryoichi Ikegami's drawings of people look exactly how an Asian person should look. None of that big eyes, big head crap. And the wonderful detail! I am one who greatly appreciates detail in comics and Mr. Ikegami delivers. The automobiles and firearms are almost photorealistic-looking at times! A caution, this is a very mature story filled with gangland killings and graphic depictions of sex, and other adult material. Definitely not for the faint of heart or the squeamish. But if you can handle the subject matter, then I highly recommend this comic book.
