    Book Description

The modern artist strives to be independent of the public's taste--and yet depends on the public for a living. Petra Chu argues that the French Realist Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) understood this dilemma perhaps better than any painter before him. In The Most Arrogant Man in France, the first comprehensive reinterpretation of Courbet in a generation, Chu tells the fascinating story of how, in the initial age of mass media and popular high art, this important artist managed to achieve an unprecedented measure of artistic and financial independence by promoting his work and himself through the popular press.

The Courbet who emerges in Chu's account is a sophisticated artist and entrepreneur who understood that the modern artist must sell--and not only make--his art. Responding to this reality, Courbet found new ways to "package," exhibit, and publicize his work and himself. Chu shows that Courbet was one of the first artists to recognize and take advantage of the publicity potential of newspapers, using them to create acceptance of his work and to spread an image of himself as a radical outsider. Courbet introduced the independent show by displaying his art in popular venues outside the Salon, and he courted new audiences, including women.

And for a time Courbet succeeded, achieving a rare freedom for a nineteenth-century French artist. If his strategy eventually backfired and he was forced into exile, his pioneering vision of the artist's career in the modern world nevertheless makes him an intriguing forerunner to all later media-savvy artists.

                  Book Description

During the 1860s and '70s, more than a decade before the development of French Impressionism, Italy produced a group of avant-garde artists whose fervently nationalist paintings anticipated some of Impressionism's theoretical concerns. These artists were called "Macchiaioli" because they based their technique on a quickly rendered macchia, or sketch.

In the first extended sociopolitical interpretation in English of this important group, Albert Boime places the Macchiaioli in the cultural context of the Risorgimento—the political movement that unified Italy, freed from foreign rule, under a secular, constitutional government. Anglo-American art criticism has generally neglected these painters (probably because of their overt political affiliation and nationalist expression), but Boime shows that these artists, while deeply political, nevertheless created aesthetically superior work.

Boime's study departs from previous research on the Macchiaioli by systematically investigating the group's writings, sources, and patronage in relation to the Risogimento. The book also examines both contemporary and later critical responses, revealing how French art criticism has obscured the achievements of Macchiaioli art. Richly illustrated, The Art of the Macchia and the Risorgimento will appeal to anyone interested in nineteenth-century European art or the history of Italy.

If you were ever in a high school or college marching band, this book is DEFINITELY for you. These toons bring back a ton of memories about the perils (yes, there are perils) and humor of being in a marching band. Band life is a unique culture, where little black dots on a piece of paper represent the foundation of a collection of very dedicated people. Who'd have thought selling fruit was the solution for the "pay to play" concept? You surely don't see FOOTBALL PLAYERS selling fruit. Nooooo! But band kids do (or at least their parents do). And all this to play music.

In that vein, Tales From Band Camp captures the ironic humor that you have to have when participating in marching band. After all, there is a certain level of craziness required to put on a ridiculously plumed hat game after game.

Most enjoyably, this book completely captures the inside politics that occur between sections. Trumpets get all the glory. Piccolos get the "hard parts", and saxophones get no respect at all!

Pick up this book for someone you know who is or has been in a marching band. It's guaranteed they will identify with it completely!

This book is the best!!! (Though I would not recommend bringing it to math class with you.....it's kinda hard to explain a bassoon joke to your teacher after you disrupted the class with your laughter)
