Just Not A Good Fit For A Classroom ....she said self-referentially.......2007-04-20
I was given this book several years ago when I was out book shopping with a teacher I love to be with.
We were both rather caught up that day in the spirit of the art and poem.
Feels almost a decade ago, so it probably was.
I liked Chagall's pictures some of which here I had not seen, will never see (though I've made a good stab at knowing his work)and appreciate this book form and maybe, in my way, felt that the poem was pushing me to consider them from a perspective I might have seen differently sans text. It would be typical that my friend was drawn to the words reading it to me several times, and I think drawing a bit of customer interest, while I was held by the images. Well we were in a children's bookstore in the art books looking for things to use in teaching...so I guess in a way...we were behaving rather like a child might finding the National Geo holding pictures of "naked people" something I recall of my brothers days. I imagine the internet fills that role now.....
This said I would contextualize this...I was raised in another "time" and in the arts and literature. In my era if creating a piece we were asked frankly to shock, disarm, question to engage with literature and art for its ability to speak the human truth that often is hidden or obfuscated. That love contains a side that exists physically ....a kind of accepted truth. Thus you have Cummings poem. Which is a bit..risque. Or these paintings. I don't know why I find reality TV not this or expressions in culture now different but I do. I am aware that changes in outlooks now conclude that a book like this one would be kind of a scandal in school.
Not that I was taking it there, but in my time I think "nobigdeal". I find this odd with what goes on media wise...but enough said.
I would imagine the persons exchanging this as a gift would be talking of love, or like my friend and I feeling silly happy about an aspect of living. If I put it on the coffee table in a stack of art books my kids read it, enjoy the pictures, like the book but I doubt think much one way or another besides its sweet. To me at the time I found it spoke to journeys in our lives, positive aspects of this thing denoted as love functioning in our days....funny...irreverent. Rather a playful relationship to the viewer maintained, nice diversion. I'd give it to someone with a heart.
WOW!.......2002-09-24
This is one of the most beautiful combinations of poetry and art. The poem is really quite beautiful. The art is inspirational. I don't knwo that I'd give it to a couple for their wedding though, cause the poem is about a man who is cheating on his wife....So don't take the advice of the other reviewer, the couple might look at you funny!
I'm Impressed.......2001-05-10
Just got this book and I love it. I purchased it based on reviews that I read and they are 100% correct. Beautiful pictures and a touching poem. Great as a wedding gift.
a beautiful marriage of words and Chagall.......2000-11-25
If you are a Chagall or e.e. cummings lover, this book is not to be missed. It is an absolute treasure and such a beautiful marriage of words and art! The images perfectly complement the text. Highly recommended, even as an introduction to either of these two artists.
a charming how-to for the romantic at heart.......1999-06-18
A terrific combination of art appreciation classes and literature for reading outdoors--took me back some 35 years to college days in its content, and then back up to the present in its pervasive wisdom. A joy for the ear and eye, just like its message--lovemaking is for lots of ages and stages and a delight to the senses. Should be on every bookstore's front tables.

Book Description
From street scenes to portraits, landscapes to architectural studies, this fascinating collection of photographs allows us to glimpse a time and way of life now past: Ottoman Syria, Palestine, and Egypt in the latter half of the nineteenth century.
P. Felix Bonfils was the first French photographer, and one of the first European photographers, to settle in the Near East, establishing a studio in Beirut in 1867. He is credited with introducing the genre of Near Eastern photographic portraiture, and the selection published here, taken by Felix, his wife Lydie, and his son Adrien, includes remarkable portraits of Bedouin, Ottoman officials, Shiite Muslims, and village peasants, as well as examples of the clothing worn by different sections of society. While many of these and other pictures were posed and made use of models, and while some have been criticized for pandering to the taste for the exotic prevalent in Europe at the time, the Bonfils collection is nevertheless an invaluable social record, containing many sensitive ethnographic portraits and objective and unobtrusive field-shots.
The Bonfils landscapes, panoramic views, and architectural studies of Near Eastern cities and monuments are also important historical records of places and buildings that have deteriorated,

Customer Reviews:
Good book for beginners.......2007-07-03
I generally like books from the Thomson's digital photography series. Their books are typically lucid, well illustrated, and informative. Karney's book fits well into the Thomson series. He brings his expert, professional knowledge to the craft of wedding photography, focusing primarily on the technical aspects of the profession.
But keep in mind Karney's book is a general guide about wedding photography. If you already have such a book, you probably won't learn too much different in this one. He introduces the basics of choosing camera and software related equipment, setting up and carrying out a wedding shoot, and processing the photos after you've shot the wedding.
Specific chapters include: Equipment Matters, Computers and Software (main focus on PC and Windows users. No Mac examples present), Setting Up a Website, Getting Ready for the Big Day, Making Creative and Fun (this section could be expanded), and Proofing, Selling, and Printing.
He primarily shares and explains the tools he uses, such as iView Media Pro iView MediaPro 3 (Win/Mac) and Photodex ProShow. He doesn't delve into the latest popular software like Adobe Lightroom Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.0 Win/Mac or Apple's Aperture Apple Aperture 1.5. But the workflow process he introduces could apply to almost any digital management system.
The book is well illustrated and even contains a few useful camera tutorials that every photography should either know about or learn. In fact, it would be great to see Karney write an entire book of these types of tutorials.
Cons: The book is lacking in a few areas. I felt he should have spent more time on photo technique and style. You will certainly need to check out other books on this subject. And many of the photos included in the book, while very nice, don't always illustrate the points he's making on a particular page. For example, all the tutorials could have used photos to illustrate what he is instructing readers to do. I also think he could have included more about how Photoshop actions useful to wedding photographers. PS actions are huge time savers for anyone in the business. And finally, the business aspects wedding photography are not well introduced in this book, but again you can find more information in other books about this topic. Check out Best Business Practices for Photographers
Overall, though, the book is one of many that a serious beginning photographer should read. I've read better ones than this, but I do appreciate the information and experience Karney shares in his book. I highly suggest getting this or a similar book if you're just starting out in the profession and you're looking for ideas and suggestions from a pro.

Book Description
"Sometimes we forget, and in forgetting, remember who we are," writes the girl on the train. She becomes committed to a path through the reality of 36 hours, on a journey that encompasses years of living. Saints and Lovers tells the story of a woman going home, a story peopled with the lives of friends and demons who travel with her. As the train draws nearer to a destination, the nameless woman finds herself coming face to face with these beasts, in flesh and in memory, and the terrible secret she has been running from for so long. At the same time harsh and tender, the story of her life crosses the landscapes of space and consciousness, weaving fantasy and memory into the moment that is now, here. Poetic and compelling, Saints and Lovers paints the contours of human emotion and the heart's ability to forgive while still staying true.

dont waste your time or money. The books sucks and the author is a waste of flesh
Great Story!! Beautifully Witten!!.......2005-02-26
I absolutely loved this book. The author's style of writing is so vividly descriptive, poetic and absorbing, you find yourself drawn into the story like you are watching what is going on rather than reading about it. In addition to the story, the book has other levels of appeal; psycological, philosophical and poetic imagery, which give us food for thought and introspective reflection about ourselves and our relationships. Each of us have encountered or behaved like the different characters in the book. I couldn't help but think, 'How would I react? What would I do? or say? Why?' I could not put the book down until I finished it. When it was done, I wanted more. Actually, I think I'll read it again.
More Than Meets The Eye!.......2005-02-26
Like looking at an abstract painting, this novel has so much more to it than meets the eye. The story is compelling. It unfolds through the main character's flashbacks as she travels by train to a destination you learn about later in the story. At the same time, a parallel, more personal, journey is also unfolding. The details created the pictures. The poetic imagery and stream of consciousness created a flow that just carried me along as I read. I loved it. It's a keeper!

Customer Reviews:
Good info, but insufficient for passing the exams.......2003-01-31
I just passed (January 2003) both A+ exams, using this book as one of my references. The book and CD did test you on the info in the MS A+ Certification Training Kit; however, the nature and scope of the sample test questions are different than the current A+ questions: some sample test questions ask you about arcane topics or are a dozen lines; none of the questions on my test neither covered any of the arcane topics in this book nor were longer than 2 or 3 lines. I would recommend using this book and the Microsoft A+ Certification Training Kit Review as supplements to one or more of the slim A+ Adaptive Exam books by either Meyers or Crayton. The practice tests on the included CD were good.
On the tougher side of things.......2002-09-13
Now admittedly, the A+ Readiness Review is purely for exam preparation by throwing out multiple questions at you based on CompTIA's exam objectives. In this the authors succeed as you get a blend of relatively simple, straight-forward questions to some very tough troubleshooting scenario problems. If you have no problems working your way through all the questions in this book, you are very likely to pass both A+ exams. However, this book provides the barest of coverage on the topics so it would be a very good idea not to use this book as your main study guide. The A+ Readiness Review cross-references its questions to the proper sections in its meatier brother, the A+ Certification Training Kit.
This book is not representative of the actual test.......2002-02-03
I used the Microsoft A+ Certification Readiness Review as a supplemental study aide for my A+ exam. I passed the exam with flying colors but I attribute my success to the "A+ Certification Exam Guide" by Mike Myers.
The questions in the Microsoft book are much more difficult than those on the actual exam. Many of the questions are lengthy scenarios that in no way mimic the actual exam. I would caution those who buy this book that your progress cannot be accurately gauged using the practice exams in this book. The actual exam simply is not this difficult. I would strongly suggest that you buy the Mike Myers book and read only the sections marked "test specific". Once you do this, you'll be more than ready for the exam. Don't waste your money, or more importantly your time using this book as a study aide.

Customer Reviews:
Help with cinema? Buy this book... and be an expert!.......2005-08-09
The book is exactly what I need: informations, films chronology, the actors and actress, his history, the movie history, photos, posters. A most complete literature about cinema and all related with. Acurated with dates, it shows the important facts since 1894.
Treasure trove.......2005-05-29
This volume starts at the very beginning, 1894, and progresses through to 2004. As the years go on and films become more advanced and common, we get more pages devoted to each year, with lots of great pictures and movie posters along the way. It's pointed out that the little articles on each film or subject aren't actual news clippings from back then, but they did try to write them as though they could have been. Naturally, even given the length of such a volume, there were some things that were left out, but there's also a lot more that isn't left out, and this is after all just meant to be a year-by-year review with little news clipping-like pieces to accompany the films and events of each year, not a hugely in-depth account of each and every single film and even of every single year in cinema history. The only slight problem I have with it is that there are some urban legends reported as fact, such as Walter Matthau's birth name having been Matuschanskyayasky, Buster Keaton getting his nickname from Harry Houdini (when is this urban legend going to die already!?), and a certain sordid bit of misinformation about the murder of Ramon Novarro, which was actually made up by Kenneth Anger in his notoriously false 'Hollywood Babylon.' A bit pricey, but worth every penny.
