Book Description
In this, the only up-to-date critical work on still life painting in any language, Norman Bryson analyses the origins, history and logic of 'still life', one of the most enduring forms of Western painting. The first essay is devoted to Roman wall-painting while in the second the author surveys a major segment in the history of still life, from seventeenth-century Spanish painting to Cubism. The third essay tackles the controversial field of seventeenth-century Dutch still life. Bryson concludes in the final essay that the persisting tendency to downgrade the genre of still life is profoundly rooted in the historical oppression of women. In Looking at the Overlooked, Norman Bryson is at his most brilliant to date. These superbly written essays will stimulate us to look at the entire tradition of still life with new and critical eyes.

brilliant.......2007-04-11
If you're wavering on your decision to purchase this work, just go for it. I took a seminar from Professor Bryson one semester, and let me tell you, this man simply exists on a whole different intellectual level. He constantly confronts and re-perceives art and artistic theory, pushing your mind to process visual information in radically different ways.
Looking at the Overlooked, The first critical book I have read on Still Life painting.......2005-09-17
There is not much literature available on the subject of still life painting that goes beyond the obvious surface information. This is the first review of the history of still life painting which reexamines the human implications of different still life ideas throughout history. The four essays are in depth explorations of the challenging questions asked by seemingly ordinary subject matter and the formal ways in which artists engage these concepts. I wish I would have known about this book years ago.
range and richness .......2005-08-10
In many american universities there is a sharp division between the classic art historians and the linguistics-inclined post modernists. Bryson's range encompasses both.
A sensitive, intimate book on the virtues of still lifes.......1999-09-05
This small and highly accessible book reflects on the significance of the slighted area of still life painting. It is a gentle and reflective reminder of the significance of domesticity and the interior in painting.

Great instructions for great pictures.......2005-06-29
I stopped my artistic development at stick figures and my children (ages 5 and 7) aren't much better. But, they want to draw different things. This series is great -- it is simple to follow and the results are great. I highly recommend this book as well as other books in the How to Draw series.

Well Done!!.......2003-07-16
Well written and incredible drawings. Anybody who likes to move around in something with a motor will love this book. Of course most kids who love cars grow up into adults who love cars. I enjoyed this book as much as my 13 year old son.
Excellent!.......2003-07-16
This is a great little book. Like a lot of guys, I love fast cars and this book was a pleasure to read and study with. Lots of practice and my techniques have improved greatly. This book is well worth the modest cover price.
i wish i could give it zero stars!!.......2001-09-13
Just with all of Hart's books this book cover is misleading. You look at the cover and think I'm really going to learn something and you read the book and get disappointed. He only shows the finnished step.He doesn't show the steps on how to get to the finnished step.Instead of describing how he draws it he gives you a history on each car.I'm sorry but telling a person the car history doesn't show them how to draw the car.I'm starting to think that Hart's books aren't very good.

It's a great beginning drawing book for 4 to 6 year olds........1999-07-10
We got this book for our 5-year-old grandson and he absolutely loved it. It's a very simple book, with only five different cars and four different trucks to draw. Each one is easy and yet the finished drawings look very much like real cars and trucks. For each vehicle, the author also adds suggestions at the bottom of the page for ways to add special features to the drawing. Our grandson spent countless hours drawing each vehicle over and over again.

A bit of skill needed.......2005-07-21
It helps if you have some basic drawing skills before you try this book. Great concepts and ideas. It is more advanced than some of the beginer books, but if you have those skills it is great. If you are buying a book for a kid that has no drawing skills yet but loves to try to draw these type of things, try "How to Draw Tanks and Fighting Machines" also sold at Amazon. It is more accessible than this one. To see more drawing books for kids you might want to check my lists on the subject.
Book Description
Montreal – an island at the confluence of two rivers, adorned with an unspoiled mountain at its centre has been the inspiration of poets, novelists, playwrights, and memoirists since the time of Cartier and is the only city in the world with a flourishing literary tradition in English and French. Its landscape, history, and cultures have been immortalized by Hugh MacLennan, Gabrielle Roy, Mordecai Richler, Michel Tremblay, Yves Beauchemin, and scores of others; the characters of Duddy Kravitz, Athanase Tallard, Florent Boissonneault, The Fat Woman Next Door, and Leonard Cohen’s Suzanne have rooted themselves in the imagination of countless readers.
Storied Streets is an illustrated celebration of this rich heritage, in which the reader is lead by authors Demchinsky and Naves through the history and literary byways of Montreal’s neighbourhoods, from their beginnings to the present, with evocative passages from favourite books helping to paint the scene. With its arresting and rare archival photographs, Storied Streets is an irresistible treasure for bibliophiles everywhere.
