Book Description
A comprehensive introduction to the principles, issues, and uses of two-dimensional design
In Introduction to Two-Dimensional Design, respected designer and educator John Bowers provides a solid foundation in timeless design principles that are immune to fads and trends. With the help of more than 160 revealing illustrations, he explores both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of 2D design, interweaving historical accounts with penetrating analyses of visual principles and issues found in important contemporary examples. He demonstrates how competing approaches to 2D design—including those based on intuition, play, chance, and empirical research—can be used successfully, either alone or in combination.
An excellent book for foundation design courses and a valuable working resource for artists and design professionals, Introduction to Two-Dimensional Design:
- Integrates applications from fine art, graphic design, architecture, interior design, and industrial design, as well as from nature and the vernacular landscape
- Covers the latest design technology, including video, Web design, and interactive media
- Features examples in context that provide the basis for methodical explanations of processes and outcomes

Description:
Producer responsibility and take-back legislation in Europe place responsibility on the manufactures for the recovery and recycling of end-of-life products. This will inevitably require the manufacturers to rethink the way products are designed and manufactured in order to improve their recyclability. This paper illustrates on the case of a fibre optic cable how this can be achieved in a practical and relatively easy way, leading to both environmental and economic benefits. The case study compares the current design the 96 fibre optic cable with several proposed design modifications with the aim of identifying the design option that would enable an easy end-of-life disassembly and recycling of component materials. The designs are evaluated on a life cycle basis for both economic and environmental impacts using the CHAin management of Materials and Products (CHAMP) methodology. CHAMP combines elements of process and design engineering with life cycle approaches to enable the user to explore technical, economic and environmental consequences of different material, process and technological options, including material recovery and recycling. CHAMP is therefore particularly well suited for addressing the requirements of the take-back and producer responsibility legislation. The results of LCA and life cycle costing obtained by using CHAMP show that cable re-design can reduce the environmental impacts by between 30 and 60% and can lead to a 40% reduction in economic costs. This is achieved by changing the internal structure of the cable, by removing some of the cable components (e.g. aluminium and organic gels) and by recycling some of the materials. Transport (including reverse logistics), processing and landfill also contribute to the overall impacts, but their contribution is less significant than that from the materials used to manufacture the cable.

Description:
The recyclability index of materials (R) is used to determine if it is economically feasible to disassemble a product. First, a percentage of the product that is composed with materials with a high R is calculated. This gives an estimate of how much of the product can be recycled theoretically. Then, a profit-to-loss margin for recycling is calculated to determine whether it is economically feasible to recover that percentage of materials with high R previously calculated. If the margin is positive, then it is economically possible to recycle that product, and if it is negative certain actions could be taken in order to make the margin positive.

Book Description
Cinema 4D 9.5: Real-World 3D Animation Production teaches how to produce commercial-quality 3D animation using Maxon's, powerful and affordable, Cinema 4D. Written for 3D animation professionals, hobbyists, and students, this practical, hands-on book uses real-world projects to teach the entire production process. Beginning with a review of how to model photorealistic objects, the book progresses through creating custom materials, cloth simulation, and character animation, to video game and simulation techniques. The book takes a software-integrated approach to 3D animation production with a focus on Cinema 4D and how to use it in concert with several other applications. This Cinema 4D-centric approach shows how real-world 3D animation production challenges can be met, not only with a great tool, but with a great tool box. Throughout the book, you'll learn a highly efficient workflow for creating 3D character animation with C4D. You'll learn various ways of producing motion graphics by integrating Adobe® Photoshop, and After Effects®, with C4D. You'll explore projects that use BodyPaint to extend your ability to create fantasy and control the realism of how image maps relate to their objects. And you'll use Right Hemisphere Deep Creator 2 and Code Gardener's XPort 1.3 to explore methods for animating video games and simulations. Some experience with 3D animation is assumed, but all levels of users will be challenged to expand their skills.
Customer Reviews:
It depends on your definition of "real world".......2007-03-20
Don't get this hoping to learn high quality character animation, but if you want to learn quick animation where time & budget is first concern then this good book. Contrary to what some have said its not all about 3rd party apps. He does cover modeling, Expresso scripting & dynamics - I believe Expresso comes with the basic CD4 and dynamics comes with the complete CD4. Even though the book is far from complete he does cover subjects no one else has the nerve to touch.
interesting anecdotes.......2006-11-03
The book really should be called "how to cheat with animating C4d by buying lots of expensive addons". The tutorials are interesting, but what is missing is basic animating in C4D with the tools already available. For example, there is no section on animating facial expressions. That is so much used in games and movies that it's omission is curious. Many of the human animations are done with using the BodyStudio plugin to import animations done in Poser. Poser's animation tools are moderately good for things like walking, but lack the sophistication of tools available in C4D. If you like premade animations, his technique is good. There is no mention of the InterPoser plugin which is a stronger way of importing Poser objects in C4D.
Also missing is any section of web based animation: rotating 3D objects in response to user input. But there is a section on modeling with IModeller 3D that really doesn't have anything to do with animation.
This book would be useful to someone who already knows how to animate in C4D but wishes to understand various addins that are useful in importing Poser animations, making games, adding keyed video (like the section on Ultra), etc. So it really a book on how to cheat in C4D and save time by buying other programs.
Excellent learning source.......2006-05-27
This was book was extremely helpful and easy to follow. It was used in class to help my students and they found the animation and dynamics information invaluable. I'm always impressed when someone can successfully communicate difficult technical information.
unleash the legend of creative animation.......2006-04-25
After working with Maya for about 3yrs now I would say this book has opened up another way for me to look at animation. It should be about the creative side to get fantastic results not about computer programming (MEL). C4D helps you get great results in no time and my man Larry has demonstrated that very nicely. Maya is so completed and confusing that you really have to be way experience to get a good enough results. I would highly recommend this book to any beginner who is wants to Learn 3D animation (so those people like me out there get, grab this book and make your first big step into the animation world). Larry Mitchell awesome book, no doubt about it, experience users of Cinema 4D you just have to wait for next book perhaps!!
Cinema 4D 9.5 Excellent! well written, easy to follow........2006-04-25
This book has provided me with a hands on guid that I have search for many years. I am new to animation, and I think Mr. Mitchell did a fantastic job of explaining and making his real world application easy to follow. This book has taught me more about professional animation than any other books in my library. To me the CD is an added bonus. I would highly recommend this book to any beginner who is trying Learn 3D animation production. The only negative thing I have to say is, why it took you so long to publish a book that gave someone like me the confidence in learning 3D animation. I was able to create my first animated characters by using this book, by adding this book to your library, you will be gaining a wealth of knowledge. By the way, when is your next book coming out? Simply, this book is GREAT.

After Effects, the video-compositing program from Adobe, lets you create all kinds of footage. Real World After Effects provides users of all levels with an excellent guide to this program. The guide thoroughly reviews the basic interface elements and teaches you how to create videos using still images, videos, or both together. Next, you import and work with Illustrator and Photoshop files, audio files, and 3-D effects. There's also some guidance on using third-party software--such as Adobe's Illustrator, Photoshop, and Premiere and MetaCreations's Painter, Detailer, and Expression--to prepare artwork for use in After Effects. The authors then bring you into the bulk of the product, teaching you how to work with keyframes and animations, mattes, transfer modes, and built-in and third-party filters. This section includes a chapter on using the Production Bundle, the version of After Effects that has high-end features such as Keyframe Assistants, Motion Math, and Motion Tracker. Finally, Real World After Effects helps you prepare your work for output by managing high-resolution artwork using proxies, placeholders, and Photoshop Comps. The authors follow up with additional technical information, such as National Television Standards Committee (NTSC) compliance and film rendering, which only advanced users will need to think about. You use the project files and instructions on the included CD-ROM to follow along with each task in the book. A full-color insert shows movie sequences from the book's projects as well as other artistic and commercial endeavors. The CD-ROM also includes photos, clip art, and demo versions of Adobe After Effects, Premiere, and Photoshop, as well as Fractal Design Painter. The book and CD-ROM are for Macintosh, Windows 95, and Windows NT users.
Book Description
Adobe's After Effects has been called "Photoshop on steroids." This powerful video compositing program allows you to take still images and turn them into animated pictures. With it, you can layer moving video and create special effects that would take months to perfect with traditional techniques.
After Effects is used by high-end video production studios as well as wannabe MTV-style home video producers. After Effects achieves that rare combination of a powerful, yet easy to use, program-like Photoshop. Not surprisingly, it provides a very logical upgrade path for Photoshop artists who want to learn animation and multimedia.
Real World After Effects goes way beyond the Adobe manual. The book takes the reader from capturing a subject image to outputting the final production to videotape or posting it on the Web. The book covers the basics, but also goes into more depth at the intermediate to advanced level. Finally, it covers a variety of third-party After Effects plug-ins and filters, including KPT's Final Effects. The cross-platform CD-ROM contains "before" and "after" files for each book project.
Customer Reviews:
What was old is new again!.......2004-06-30
Why write a review about a seven year old book? Chapter 13 of this book gives indepth coverage of the "new" filters recently added to the 6.5 upgrade to After Effects. It also has copious movies and templates of the effects listed. By now it should be clear to anyone familiar with this excellent program you learn by doing (and reading, listening, plagiarising (smile)). This book allows you to do all of those things. Don't but the book unless the CD is there or you can get your hands on a copy of the CD. Some of the QT movies will remind you of some well known tricks you see everyday. Cheers.
Tough program, good book.......1999-07-22
This program isn't user-friendly, and takes alot to master. This book does a good job at making you a master of the porgram. You have to stick with the book and program. An application like this won't be mastered in 24 hours. Good tips, and advice in the book.
This is a great book but is now outdated........1999-03-25
After Effects 4.0 is now out and is much improved. It is worthwhile to learn 3.1 if you can't get a copy of 4.0 yet.
Really good, kind of Bad........1999-03-17
This book is really good in some areas, but weak in others. I got a pretty good understanding of the basics and some intermediate level aspects. But, some of lessons I completed and I did not know exactly what I did, and I even read over the hard parts more than once. There are actual typographical errors every now and then that I detected. It does give you a good feel for how somebody would use it in the real world however. I have not read any other After Effects books to compare it to.
A decent book for the beginner.......1999-02-14
I admit this book did lack in some areas, but not until the end of the book. This book WAS an easy to understand and did enable a person to duplicate the examples that were given. Where it lacked, in the later chapters, was in the explanation of why certain things were done the way they were. I would recommend this book if you have the money to spare because it does allow a person to become familiar with the basics, but unfortunately doesn't provide a clear understanding of the specifics.

Customer Reviews:
One of the Best European Series!.......2005-11-22
Ever since childhood, my favorite comics were Franco-Belgian. Tintin, Asterix, Lucky Luke and last but not least Spirou. As a kid, I read all the Spirou books in French and I thought they were amazing.
This book was written by Andre Franquin, the first artist to turn spirou into a major success. This book was drawn in the 60's, and shows the battle between Spirou and Fantasio against a maniacal inventor named Zorglub. This book is considered as one of Franquin's finest by most Spirou fans. It is a must read. I hope that someday more Spirou books will be available to the English reading public, especially those drawn by Franquin and by Tome and Janry.
Franquin's Spirous are the Best.......2003-08-20
I've read all Spirou's books 15 years ago and definitely Franquin's ones are unbeatable. Unfortunately you won't find the same imagination and humour inside the other authors'books. Nowadays, you only find Franquin's books in french. Why, if they have the other not so cool books print in english and portuguese, and probably spanish, italian..? I used to find those books in portuguese in Portugal's bookstores back then. Kim Thompson, please do us a favor. Translate all the other Franquin's books to english.I wish my kids will have the same joy of reading Spirou as I had...and Tintin, Asterix, and Blake & Mortimer. Real, flesh and bone heroes, full of humour and wit.
better than tintin.......2003-05-08
Z is for Zorglub was the 15th Spirou book Franquin made. He then left the comic to focus on his own character Gaston la Gaffe. In Z is for zorglub we'll meet the mad scientist zorglub who wants to dominate the world. However, there is one spirou book even better than this one: Le dictateur et le champignon: In which Spirou and Fantasio must battle Fantasios evil cousin Zantafio (whom is the archvillain of the series)
A fond reminder of my younger days.......2000-09-09
I have around thirty of the hardcover Spirou and Fantasio graphic novels, in Spanish, from when I vacationed in Spain as a boy. As a college student now, I look back on those days fondly, and these graphic novels have aged extremely well. This French comic series are adventure stories similar to those found in the more famous Tintin books by Herge. However, in my opinion, Spirou and Fantasio are far superior...more whimsical and imaginative (the character Marsupilami originated in the series' pages before being bought by Disney). Spirou and Fantasio travel the world, toppling dictatorships, fighting mad scientists, traveling to the future and the past, and stopping organized crime rings. A few years back, a series called El Pequeno Spirou (or Little Spirou), spinned off of the Spirou and Fantasio comics. Little Spirou stories are one page comic strips (like those that appear in the Sunday paper) full of hilarious lowbrow (and award-winning) humor. The main character is Spirou as a child, and Fantasio, unfortunately, doesn't appear in the stories. These too are worth getting. Unfortunately, as other reviewers have stated, it's hard finding these graphic novels outside of France (and Spain). Hopefully, as with Asterix and Tintin, these books will someday reach avid young readers everywhere.
Classic French comic filled with mordant wit and adventure.......1999-05-24
I read all the Spirou stories as a child when we lived in Belgium, and then afterward when we had moved back to the US. In the 60s, they were serious rivals of Herge's Tintin for the hearts of European kids. For some reason (undoubtedly some financial or distribution reason I'm unaware of) they have yet to catch on in America. Hopefully, the American printing of Z Is For Zorglub, one of the more fantastical, even outlandish, of the Spirou & Fantasio adventures, will kindle an interest. My daughter is a convert and I'm beginning to teach her French so she can read my old Spirous, which I've kept all these years.
