Book Description
Impressionist Quartet draws us into the inner lives of a core group of mid-nineteenth-century artists-Edouard Manet, Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, and Berthe Morisot-known, collectively, as the "Impressionists." Derided by critics, sneered at by contemporaries, their work sold for pittances. They were either marginalized or dismissed altogether by the French art establishment. And, to some degree, their iconic works have eclipsed them.
Portraying them as individuals and as fellow conspirators in a new way of seeing and representing the world, Jeffrey Meyers brings to life this most popular and influential group of painters in the entire history of art. The result is an accessible and wonderfully illuminating book that offers readers a fresh way of looking at these artists and the priceless, timeless masterpieces they created.
Customer Reviews:
Frustrating Read.......2006-05-03
Think carefully before buying this book. You won't finish it. The author spends most of his time describing (but not really analyzing) numerous works of art which are not illustrated in the book. At first, I tried to look up each image online, but with the number of paintings he writes about, it quickly became impossible. It is pointless (not to mention boring) to read the descriptions without being able to see the works themeselves. A very small number of paintings are illustrated in the book, but even they are in black and white. The biographical portions of the text are interesting, but the book is perhaps 1/3 biography, 2/3 description, which makes it impossible to get through.
Impressionist Delight-ful Reading.......2005-07-07
If you love their art and you would like to learn about their personal friendships, this is the book to have. Highly recommend it.

Seven Interviews with Tadao Ando.......2003-04-11
Tadao Ando has created the best new museum in America, across the street from Louis Kahn's classic Kimbell, and chief curator Michael Auping has done a brilliant installation of the museum's stellar collection. To whet your appetite for a visit to Fort Worth, read this penetrating analysis of the creative process--a four-year series of exchanges between curator and architect. It's a must-have for everyone who cares about the art of building--for its insights and its exemplary design. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)

To simply be blunt this so-called novel is just porn on paper for any thirteen year old boy who happens to get his hands on it. This should be a good topic for discussion at the author's next therapy session.

Customer Reviews:
A great collection of Scottish fiddle tunes.......1999-12-28
This is a very well done book of Scottish fiddle tunes. There are many classics in this book, plus some gems that you may have trouble finding anywhere else, like "Belfast Hornpipe."
The only disconcerting thing the American musician may have with it at first is that the chord symbols (actually the letter names of the chords) are printed below the line of music rather than above it, as is more common in the States.
Over here, we have been spoiled a bit by low priced collections, such as the reprints issued by Dover, so the price may look a little steep. It isn't, though. Remember, this book has come all the way from the Isle of Skye, and it costs these people more to print a book like this.
The printing is excellent, everything is easily readable, and the arrangements will work well on the mandolin, too.

Customer Reviews:
my favorite.......2007-01-18
I'm a big fan of this series. Many reasons attone to that. Firstly, the artwork is amazing. Kari's artistic abilities are amazing and the pictures themselves are complex and captivating.
The storyline has a lot of twists and turns, but not enough to make your head spin. Enough to make you strongly desire the next novel...and then the next one.
I find the jokes and dialogue to be refreshingly hilarious. I laughed almost the entire time. Between that and the lovable characters, there was a lot to love about the series.
The very base of the story reminded me a bit of Ranma 1/2 by Rumiko Takahashi. However, as the novel goes on the similarities vaporize faster than Guilt-Na-Zan's male presence. the work is a deliciouly unique step into humor. Fans of humor comics and the artwork of CLAMP will love this manga. Its a great follow-up to its amazing first novel.
Unlike a lot of humor novels, the two of these mangas actually manage to carry a decent plotline behind it and connect in a seamless way, leaving you begging for more each time. Now, I anxiously await the third installment. This will delight fans of the first manga, and make converts of new readers. Thank you Kari Erika!

Customer Reviews:
SEXY IN ANCIENT EGYPT.......2005-11-12
One of the things I love about the Gallery Girls collections from SQ Productions is the endless variety of themes they come up with for these fantastic pin-up collections, not to mention the always considerable talent that works on them. Eternal Temptation 2 is the second volume of pin-up art using the mysterious ancient Egypt as the back drop. Intrepid tomb raiders, sexy mummies, and luscious Egyptian queens can all be found in the book that features a painted cover by fan favorites Fastner & Larson, and features artists like Glas Gallego, Arantza, Pedro Cuevas, San Julian, Palaez, and many more into this 64 page book.
While this theme may be a tad bit limiting in its scope, it's the artists who really take ball and run with it to produce some wonderful illustrations. An elaborate piece by Blas Gallego has a nude blonde slave being dragged before an Egyptian queen by a mummy. Daniel Pascarelli shows off another mummy shambling forward carrying the body of a topless pyramid explorer as her comrades look on helpless in the distance. One of my favorites is a 40's inspired piece by Marashi of good girl art showing a lovely and buxom blonde tomb raider surprised by a mummy who grabs her from behind. I love the vintage style hair and bra in this piece that is so reminiscent of old pulp covers.
I also love the rather gory item by Quintabani showing a woman sitting with her back to the reader as she holds a severed mummy head in her hand. Bondage and S & M fans will love the piece by Boada with a nude slave on her knees, fresh from a whipping as evidenced by the marks on her back as the queen sits amused. Palaez and Arantza are always a highlight of any Gallery Girls collections and they do not disappoint here. Palaez draws a beautiful queen being worshipped by a pair of mummies who are on their knees embracing her. Arantza produces a glorious Egyptian woman in gold head dress standing before an ornate sarcophagus.
Quite a different route for this Gallery Girls collection but certainly no less stunning.

50 Rules Just for Me.......2006-06-08
When I read this book I was just looking for something to help me get ideas for a comic I was working on. In the end I found another one of many of the books that I've come to love.
The story is basically about twins who turn out to be total opposites. The sister is responsible, doing well in school, and takes care of everyone in the house, including her father. Her brother is the total opposite. He sits around the house all day playing with the cat, oesn't really care how he does in school, and basically forces people to take care fo him. When he is forced to do any work he doesn't do much, such as when he has to babysit his little brother. He complains that he wants food and his brother ends up giving him cat food.
The story doesn't have much of a plot apart from the fact that is a life we all face. Falling in love, making friends, and trying to keep everything in tune, just basic life.
In the story you meet many interesting characters life the twins' older sister who is a comic artist, their younger brother who wants nothing more then be cute, and the twin brother's usually dark, but charming, cute friend who might have a thing for his best friend's sister.
Even though it basically has no plot the story is wonderful and something you will enjoy again and again.
A good book.......2006-05-02
I just finished this book, and I enjoyed just about every page. I'm more one for comedies, but although this one wasn't really funny in any way, it's still a good read. Unlike most manga, this one is actually the kind in which things happen that would happen in real life. All the time you're reading it, you almost feel like you're part of the story. That's how I felt anyways.
Revolts around TEENS as usual. .......2006-02-22
Manga may be big in Japan, but it seems to be for and all about TEENS, TEENS, TEENS.:P Even though this one takes place in Korea!
Read all about those amazing creatures called "teens"! They are all svelte, beautiful, and of course, white. We are all so fascinated by those wealthy white-bread young things who are more doe-eyed than slant-eyed, like true Asians are. And like ALL manga characters, they resemble supermodels and pop idols who live in big, magnificent houses - a dwelling so typical of most manga teens. No wonder Britney Spears and Paris Hilton have totally taken over the world!
Oh, and let's also share Japan's great interest in those mysterious, mystic places where TEENS go to, called "high school". Wow! Cool! At least those teen characters featured here don't have any magical or superpowers, though they do come in a "pair", like Luke and Leia. How original.
At least one of the girls looks like an overaged adult - the kind we really don't see much in manga anyway - that's exactly what happens to our gorgeous elf-like beings called "teens" once they pass a certain age. They become invisible housewives and salarymen!XP
Oh, and you have to be a TEEN to read that kind of stuff, too!
Pleasantly Surprised.......2005-06-10
If you're looking for a light-hearted manga book, 50 Rules is perfect! It's not very deep or meaningful and there isn't much of a plot, but it's very entertaining. It's the sort of manga you can read more than once!
I enjoyed it!.......2004-11-19
