Book Description

What do they all mean – the lascivious ape, autophagic dragons, pot-bellied heads, harp-playing asses, arse-kissing priests and somersaulting jongleurs to be found protruding from the edges of medieval buildings and in the margins of illuminated manuscripts? Michael Camille explores that riotous realm of marginal art, so often explained away as mere decoration or zany doodles, where resistance to social constraints flourished.Medieval image-makers focused attention on the underside of society, the excluded and the ejected. Peasants, servants, prostitutes and beggars all found their place, along with knights and clerics, engaged in impudent antics in the margins of prayer-books or, as gargoyles, on the outsides of churches. Camille brings us to an understanding of how marginality functioned in medieval culture and shows us just how scandalous, subversive, and amazing the art of the time could be.

I had to read this for a class. This is not for anyone unless you are searching for strict information. Camille manages to give countless astute observations that would be very helpful in building up a paper. But as historical book unto itself that guises itself as text interpreting Medieval Europe through rebellious artwork, it just doesn't hold much water. The confines here are soooooo narrow that unless you have already a great passion for artwork of this period you will be left quite numb.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Exploration of the Margins of Medieval Culture.......1999-12-07

For readers unfamiliar with the culture of the Middle Ages, it is surprising, and perhaps even disconcerting, to learn that a medieval manuscript of a prayer-book could contain marginal images of human excrement, or that medieval churches were frequently adorned with gargoyles depicting diabolic and uncanny figures. This book by Michael Camille, professor of art history at the University of Chicago, is devoted to explaining these strange "margins" of medieval culture. Camille essentially argues that, while such marginal images could on the face of it be interpreted as subverting the conventions of the dominating center of culture, they ultimately served to reinforce it. As the author puts it on page 127, "the edges of discourse...always return us to the rules of the center." In other words, medieval artists toyed with the margins of culture, with "otherness" and difference, yet ultimately sided with the "good" and the "normal." Interestingly enough, the marginal images which were so typical of the high Middle Ages disappeared at the beginning of the modern age. Camille suggests that the margins lost their function of hinting at the ugly reverse of mainstream culture in an age where the mainstream both asserted itself more strongly, rigorously demarcating "low" from "high" culture, and at the same time dissolved difference in the medium of bourgeois taste. Peasants and drunkards, for example, became the explicit object of a genre called the "grotesque." At the end of this fine book, Camille writes: "art collapsed inwards, to create a more literal and myopic dead-center [devoid of the medieval playfulness], taking with it edges and all" (p. 160).

5 out of 5 stars My first Martha Stewart book.......2002-12-07

I have used many of these projects and loved it. The ribbon trays I have given as gifts were well received, and once I got the glass cut, were just gorgeous. I found baskets on sale one day, and they just all came together, not as expensive as I thought. I think the ribbon cost the most, but still, a really great gift for not a lot of money in my case. Recipes, of course, and things like candlemaking are showcased here. So glad I bought it!

I am usually a Martha fan but I see these books of hers as an attempt to just suck more money out of us. Almost everything in this book can be found in past issues of her magazine. If I would have known that I would have went to the library and decided what was best myself.I believe all of her books are this way---I mean samples from her show and magazine. Nothing new or surprising.

5 out of 5 stars Make your Christmas one "from the heart"........1996-12-09

Martha Stewart presents some of the most beautiful and creative ideas to make Chirstmas special. Her gift and wrapping ideas allow for the kind of creativity that will make each gift truly special and "from the heart".The decorating ideas she presents are truly beautiful and have given rise to many new holiday traditions in our home and in the homes of the many friends that have borrowed this book from me. The fact that she provides the names and addresses of the mail order houses she gets her supplies from for all of the wonderful things she shows in the book is a god-send.

With 18 sheets of embossed die-cut paper scraps packaged together with a 48-page source book, this nifty package provides step-by-step instructions for 10 projects, and even gives you the paper motifs with which to make them. The technique is basically a variant of decoupage, but most of the cutting has already been done for you. As Victorian Christmas explains, the lovely scraps can be used to decorate a cookie tin, pie platter, table centerpiece, wassail bowl, potpourri jar, or your own decorations. Sprinkled throughout are beautiful photographs and paragraphs explaining various Victorian customs, such as the traditions of gift-giving, card-making, and tree-decorating.

4 out of 5 stars You Will Think It's Christmas 1900.......2001-06-07

This double book has it all-instructions and the materials to make projects. The very beautiful book has several Victorian projects to make using the Christmas "scraps" which are included in the second half of the book. The projects are somewhat disappointing, however, the reproduction paper pictures called "scraps" make up for the lack in originality of the projects. The rather lackluster projects were the springboard for my own ideas with which to use the paper "scraps" of Father Christmas, Victorian angels, flowers, etc. Overall, the paper pictures were the stronger of the two halves of the book, but well made up for any weakness in the project suggestions. Gorgeous pictures. Well worth the money.

I've just had a lot of fun figuring out what I can turn the Christmas cards into. Sure we all know about cutting out gift tags but this goes way beyond that simple suggestion.
The author shows place cards, party table decorations, placemats and coasters, all made with the colorful pictures from Christmas cards. She even makes a Christmas village of little houses, a creche, furnishes a doll's house and creates a merry-go-round.
The black and white photos look a bit dated, but use your imagination to picture today's stack of cards transformed into lots of projects. I even cut old cards into bookmark sized pieces to slip inside the cards I send next year.
It's fun for an adult but will keep the kids busy too.

                        Book Description

Gustave Le Gray's life was as romantic as any novel. A young painter in Rome, then a fashionable portrait photographer in Paris, Le Gray received commissions from Napoleon III, and astonished viewers with his painterly landscapes and ravishing seascapes. Facing bankruptcy, he fled Paris with
Alexandre Dumas to Palermo, traveled to the Middle East, and finally settled in Egypt, where he became drawing master to the ruler's children and continued to make photographs until his death in 1884.

Le Gray's work had remained largely unknown by the general public until he was rediscovered in the 1960s and was deemed by connoisseurs to be the Monet of photography. The fruit of years of research, this complete retrospective offers, as no volume before it, an assessment of Le Gray's important
place in the history of photography.

This catalogue was originally published in French to accompany the exhibition Gustave Le Gray, Photographer (1820-1884) at the Bibliotheque Nationale in spring 2002. This English-language edition, edited by Gordon Baldwin, associate curator of photographs at the Getty Museum, coincides with an
abridged version of the same exhibition at the Getty Museum that will run from July 9 to September 29, 2002.

3 out of 5 stars The Art is Fantasic but..........2004-10-12

The art by Anacleto is simply amazing. There is an issue in here done by a different artist that pales in comparison to the rest of the book (Guess he needed a week off). But the story's pretty generic (Fairies, witches dragons, etc). I recommend it nonetheless

4 out of 5 stars Fantastically Fractured Faerie Tale.......2003-04-06

Brian Holguin is one of those rare comic book authors who could have a five-year-old doing his illustrations and you just wouldn't care because the story would suck you completely in regardless. Fortunately for us he doesn't have a toddler, he has the terminally gifted Jay Ancleto, and if that isn't enough to send you into the throes of ecstacy then I don't know what is.

Between the two of them they conjure up an utterly believable realm where fairies and ancient gods walk among us, as human as you or I but merely gifted with magicks and a conditional immortality. Lady Kildare is beautiful, chain-smoking, leather-loving, fairie with a take-no-prisoners attitude and a day job at a curiosity shop. Pug is her tattooed, incorrigible partner in crime who's as handy with a broadsword as he is with the dispatching of a case of beer. Her cousin Gwynnion is fragiley insane in a thoroughly endearing way and it is she who serves as the catalyst for the Second Coming of The Dark One. The three of them, plus some other eccentrically magickal characters you may or may not recognize, have to trek halfway around the world, through worlds mundane and magical to try and save both realms from imminent Armageddon.

Which is not to say this is just one long, drawn-out, bloody swords and sorcery story. Just the opposite. There are many quiet, character development moments infused with humor; especially funny are Gwynnions meanderings in and out of sanity (Or as close to sanity as she can get) and a scene where Kildare has to deal with one ignorant customer after another until all she can do is disparagingly declare 'Oh what fools these mortals be'.

The only thing that keeps this book from being a five star read is the disconcerting jump from Ancleto to a fill-in artist- who is still very good but works in a completely different style that gives you a jarring transition- for one of the four issues. Also, Ancleto's fully shaded, photo-realistic illustrations are so perfect as-is it would have been nice to see them without computer effects layered on top of them. I defy you to look at the untouched black and white covers and sample panels at the back of the book and think that they could be improved in any way with a bit of color.

Graphic novels are the DVDs of the comic world; as such the extras are what make or break the final prouduct and Aria simply teems with them. About a third of the book is nothing but bonus material, including a cover gallery that features all the issue's covers, even the alternate ones, with all the logos removed to let you appreciate 100% of the beauty. There's also a bonus prose story by Brian Holguin and lots of assorted sketches and pin-ups by Jay Ancleto.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking..........2001-08-02

The volume contains the first set of issues from the wonderful series, Aria. Jay Anacleto's photo-realistic artwork is breathtaking, and Brian Holguin is the master when it comes to writing fairy tale stories for adults.
