        Book Description

Paul Cezanne's life and work were deeply rooted in his native Provence. Some 50 oil paintings and several watercolors and drawings are reproduced in this volume, which focuses on the artist's landscapes, but also discusses his "Bathers" and still lifes.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars A delightful introduction.......2006-02-09

This book is a fine introduction to this great artist. The reproductions of the paintings are superb. One thing I really like is that although the author supplies many useful (and jargon free) comments and observations about the Cezanne's life and work, he or she also lets the artist speak for himself through choice selections of his writings. I understand what Cezanne was doing better now. Makes a good gift book too.

3 out of 5 stars More biography than painting.......2002-06-18

This book is well illustrated for the cost of the volume, but it is more of a biography than a book on paintings. It is also well written in readable prose, but the pace of the narrative is broken up by the fact that the illustrations rarely correspond to the place in the text where they are discussed, requiring a fair bit of page flipping. This could have been easily remedied by the publisher. Furthermore, many of the illustrations provided are not discussed at all, or only mentioned in passing. Nevertheless, several key aspects of Cezanne's approach and influence are briefly mentioned, and the text can be enjoyably read in an afternoon. These comments refer to the hardbound edition.

5 out of 5 stars What a great series!! What a great book!!.......2000-11-18

This is the second book I have from the Pegasus Library and I am impressed yet again with the high quality of this book. I love art books, but finding books with high quality images and interesting text is sometimes difficult given my limited price range. This book on Cezanne comes with a commentary which I found better written and more informative than many of the essays found in the huge tomes which seem to dominate the art book world. But every art lover knows the commentary is but a distant concern compared with the quality of the images themselves. The reproductions in this book are bright and clear, crisp enough to see the details, but not unfaithful to the originals. I could go on and on, but I will stop...in short, buy this book!

4 out of 5 stars A Study of the Man.......2000-02-26

This book is a departure from the ordinary. Yes, there is much about his art and work, but there is much more about the man himself. Any who wish to get a reading of Audubon's personality, his mind-set, his values, must read this work by Foshay. Our business is Audubon, and we feel this book is the best to come out in years. Like the images Audubon produced, this book has "life" in it - Audubon's life. It will make you feel that you know the man. - EZ, Princeton Audubon

                Product Description

Located at the tip of the Waccamaw Neck between the Waccamaw River, Winyah Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Hobcaw Barony is a 17,500-acre plantation in Georgetown County, South Carolina. Originally home to the Waccamaw Indians, the acreage was subdivided by colonial settlers into numerous smaller plantations where rice, indigo and naval stores, produced by slave labor, were exported during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Continual economic setbacks in post-Civil War South Carolina led landowners to sell the various plantations that compose Hobcaw Barony to Wall Street financier Bernard Baruch. Baruch used Hobcaw as a hunting retreat and family refuge, eventually selling the land to his oldest daughter, Belle, in 1935. Belle's foresight and love for the land led her to establish a trust through which Hobcaw would serve as a preserve for research and education in marine science, forestry and wildlife.

Plantation Between the Waters, by Lee Brockington, senior interpreter at Hobcaw, brings the centuries of history surrounding Hobcaw Barony to the public in remarkable clarity. The images and text provide an intimate glimpse into the lives of the people who have been connected to this unspoiled landscape for generations.

The South Carolina Grand Strand--popularly known as the Myrtle Beach region--is only 55 miles long, yet few coastlines have a richer, more colorful history.

Numbered among its parade of colorful characters are hardened explorers, seasoned woodsmen, remarkable women, famous soldiers, powerful politicians, violent men, and gifted visionaries.

This collection of historical tales proves that sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Beware the Plat-Eyes.......2005-10-29

Elizabeth Robertson Huntsinger published her first book of Georgetown ghost stories in 1995 and followed it with this volume in 1998. In many ways this book resembles it's predecessor except that the writing style is much better in this entry. It is indeed very obvious that Mrs. Huntsinger has grown as an author and that is quite a feat considering that her first venture was very well written.

Her first book contained hardly any first person accounts of hauntings and although this entry could use a few more of these eyewitness accounts they are certainly more in evidence in this book than in the last. There are a couple of chapters that don't deal with ghosts in a real way but those chapters aren't all that distracting and the chapter dealing with Hags and Plat-Eyes is completely understandable since these two entities are such a staple of Southern lore.

The area around Georgetown was a leading rice producing area before the Civil War and many of the stories contained in this book come from the old rice plantations of Georgetown County. Throw in a pirate or two, a haunted lighthouse and a headless British soldier and you have the recipe for a very good ghost book. One would have to wonder how this author could fail to produce an interesting book with such fine material to work with but I can assure you that many authors could fall flat on their faces with this material. Mrs. Huntsinger does an admirable job of telling these stories and she does so with the charm of a real Southern lady. She has an enthusiasm for her subject and a fondness for the area that come through loud and clear in her writing and this combination is always a distinct plus in this genre of book.

This book will definitely accompany me on my next trip to the South Carolina low country so that I can follow the directions the author so kindly provides to the sites she discusses. Then maybe, just maybe I will see the Terriers of Pawleys Island or the floating coffin of Kinloch Plantation for myself.

After reading "Ghosts of Georgetown" for the first time, I had to read the second one. This was even better.

                  3 out of 5 stars Georgetown's Ghosts Galore.......2005-10-02

Over the years I have read a fairly large number of these books of ghost stories and have found that the true art of writing this type of book lies in finding a proper balance for each story included. To produce a book that is informative, chilling and plausible requires not only a talent for writing and a general knowledge of the subject but also a willingness to do a lot of research. Elizabeth Huntsinger shows a good deal of talent for the first two categories but has for the most part missed the boat when it comes to research.

Much to the author's credit there are no swamp monsters, UFO stories, or old Indian legends to be found in this book. While stories like those mentioned may be interesting, they have no place in a book of ghost stories. There are also only a couple of really well worn stories here and for the most part the ghosts found in this book will be new finds for even the most faithful reader of ghost lore. Furthermore, the writing style of this author is excellent and very readable and she makes no historical mistakes that I could find.

That leaves only the lack of research to lessen the effectiveness of this book. Mrs. Huntsinger has done a good job of researching the history of the haunted site and it's ghost. The problem is that she never took the time to look for and interview people who had experienced the phenomena in question. Recent eyewitness accounts always lend an air of believability to this type of book and that kind of documentation is almost totally absent from this book. A little more digging and a few interviews would have gone a long way toward taking this from an average book to an excellent one.

Finally, the author includes directions to the haunted places that she has chronicled. This kind of feature is always helpful to anyone who might want to visit the ghosts in the Georgetown area. The directions are too vague however and when I tried to follow them to the burial place of Alice Flagg I got totally lost. These directions did get me to the general area however and after only one stop to ask for directions I found poor old Alice. Vague or not though the directions are a thoughtful addition and I would like to see more ghost books include this information. I truly appreciate the author's effort in including directions.

Last summer while on vacation in Myrtle Beach, I happened down to Georgetown County for a day on the Winyah. The scenery was breathtaking, as was this book. It was an excellent works and I especially liked being able to read history of places I have been. This book is absolutely wonderful.

This is an excellent book about a time in our history that should not be forgotten. Learn how several families worked the plantations and see pictures of various buildings, homes, churches, and gardens. Names are listed in the index for those interested in tracing family history. The Allstons (also spelled "Alston" because a branch of the family dropped one "L")played a major role on these plantations.......even to this day. Learn many interesting facts about rice production during the 19th century and how and why it came to an end in the 1st decade of the 1900's.

I read this book at my cousin's house when I was eight years old, and never forgot it. It made a Garfield fan out of me. The plot, characters (which were new to me at the time) and funny drawings all appealed strongly to me.
