The editorial review is right in stating this is more of an inspirational book than anything. There are a few sections of the book where Buechner gets into enough detail that it can be put to use by the reader, but they are in the minority.

Look at the table of contents, then realize that nearly all the discussion in the book carries minimal technical depth. It is NOT an instruction book or tip book - it's a few interesting paintings accompanied by the meanderings of a talented painter.

If you like Buechner or his work and want the book for that reason, it's a great book with a handful of insights as a plus. If you want the book because you're an aspiring artist and it's been recommended to you - everything here is covered elsewhere again and again, but in far more depth.

This is a terrific book, and I own many many instructional art books. It is worth buying for the illustrations of his pictures alone. There is much to be learned from this book, I recommend it highly.

Most inspiring art book I own.......2002-07-02

This is the best art book I've bought. I love it. Inspiring and informative, it goes through many techniques such as glazing and scumbling in a helpful and achievable way. For the serious art student, I can't recommend it enough. The author presents his material in a clear and easy to understand manner and his writing is encouraging and helpful.
I always put off portrait painting because it seemed so difficult but this book changed my whole perspective. I would recommend it to any struggling or hesitant portrait painter. It's gotten me a lot more serious about my art.
I also have to say that I found the writing style clear and easy the follow. The author doesn't pontificate or put himself on a pedestle and for such a good artist to want to share his learning after a life time of painting, is one of the things that makes this book so good.
Some books you read and give away and others you keep and continue going back too. This is a keeper. I'd give it 10 stars if I could.

Unique and Enlightening.......2001-08-10

Thomas Buechner has written a fine book. The Sunday Painter in the subtitle might make you think this artist is an amateur who paints only occasionally. Actually, he is very professional and now a full time painter after retiring from his career as director of several museums. He conveys to his readers the secrets of layered painting in oils as opposed to alla prima, all-in-one-session painting. He really opened my eyes to the beauty of glazes and scumbling, letting previous layers show through to mix their effects in the eye of the viewer. His insights into atmospheric perspective are unique in all the books I have read and are themselves worth several times the price of this book. This book has expanded my understanding and helped me paint much more vibrant paintings than before. Thank you Thomas Buechner.

It's More Inspiration and Soul Than Techniques.......2001-06-24

I had been referred to this book by a female artist friend of mine a week before I wrote this review when she left to attend a workshop by the author in New York. I got my hand on this book a few days later and finished it (not in one sitting) in about two days.

This is more of an inspiration than techniques book. A very enjoyable book, indeed!

Although the author does cover the WHAT's and HOW's (along with the WHY he paints) in his book, his techniques are presented in a way that, perhaps, is more appreciated by professional artists than starters. Specifically, the author briefly presents his techniques in just one page/painting in average. Several technique demos are presented, and they are very good. If one needs to be spoonfed on every technique in oil painting, this is NOT the book to look for them. A lot of techniques he mentioned in the book can be found elsewhere. The author does provide a (long) reference citation for further reading.

What is so good about this book, instead, is the inspiration and humbleness that I feel when reading his book. Born in 1926, only began painting full time in 1987 (at 61 years of age) even though having done most "art-related" jobs since 1945, and still painting, his book is simply a natural outcome of this lifelong artist.

If you have a camera with any manual settings and know how to use them this book may be too basic for you. As another reviewer mentioned the images are poor quality, which can make it difficult to discern the point being made.

If you're new to photography in general this isn't a bad book. If you're beyond that look elsewhere.

Great information, but marred by problems.......2005-04-26

202 Digital Photography Solutions contains much useful information for anyone wanting to learn more about photography, including topics often barely touched on by similar books, e.g., caring for lenses. Yet the reader is not overwhelmed by useless detail. The information is well chosen and well organized, and the numbered "tips" layout is easy to follow.

There are two problems with this book. One is that the author's somewhat offbeat sense of humor eventually begins to grate on the reader's nerves. Must every pun and play on words be explored? He'll warn about creating "dark shadows" and then add ("like the tv series"). And on and on.

The other problem is a more serious one. The sample photos are all in black and white, and are so badly printed that they detract from the book's effectiveness. There is nothing visual to inspire the reader or amateur photographer. Eventually one may wonder why, if the author knows so much about photography, his photos are so bad?

A Must for Amateurs.......2003-09-16

This book is great an amateur like myself. It gave me the courage to try some new things and made digital photography both easy and fun. I would recommend this book to anyone who is just starting out with a digital camera or someone who wants to learn to get the full potential from their camera.

Excellent book for a beginner.......2007-06-12

I got this book from my local library before I got my camera. It was incredibly helpful in many areas. I used the information to pick which dSLR camera to get. Then I used it to help me pick which lens to buy to go with my kit lens. Now I am using it to learn more about how to take good pictures. This book is a wealth of information! Now I just have to decide if I want to shell out the money for it when I can keep getting it from the library.

One thing that I like about this book is that it doesn't try and persuade you towards one brand or a another. Some books are very obviously pro-this or pro-that, and it is hard to get a non-biased opinion. I felt that this book was pretty neutral in that sense.

It is a great book for someone considering or just bought a new digital SLR. Besides the basics and theories, it also tell us what kind of "gadgets" we need to get for our cameras.

This is really a book for the beginner or intermediate photographer just hopping into digital photography - not for the professional looking for the latest technical improvements in the industry. This book helps you get your act together and make the plunge into this new and fast growing technology. Even the most knowledegeable amateur can pick up some new tips - Greg pointed out some basics like keeping your best pics as "read-only" files. File organization, how to buy a camera, managing and storing files, turning digital images into print, and just plain basic computer management of the whole digital photography process is what this book is all about. Many of us need to read this before we get embroiled in the techy issues of this new industry.

More Than a Beginner's Book.......2002-04-27

This book is a truly wonderful source of ideas, and a wonderful source of information on some of the programs a digital photographer might want or need. I'm not at all new to digital photography but I learned a great deal from the book, and got several invaluable ideas from it. I was also reminded of several programs which will make digital photography easier and more fun for me, my family, and my friends. If every definition isn't precise, if every single idea doesn't appeal to every sinlge reader, that's not the point. The immense value of this book is that anyone with an open mind *will* learn from it and will find at least several ideas she/he wants to incorporate into their own experience. It's one of the very best digital photography books I've read.

I bought this book based on the glowing Amazon reviews. I started with the book's basic definitions. The book says that "A pixel is the smallest unit used to make an image on a computer." Used by whom? I skip to Dots per inch (dpi) and find "dpi is a simple term than tends to be confused with image size. Dots per inch is an important characteristic of both output and input devices." I still have no idea what the author is talking about and go to the referred image size and find "Image size is usually expressed in terms of inches or pixels." I hope the books gets better because it can't get worse. ... Jim Hagan

THE BEST FOR THE BEGINNER.......2001-05-29

I am new in the digital world. I found this book to be super for me. I am a mature individual (61 years) a beginner and I now feel I am a PRO. I am sure that there are many like me that did not grow up with computers and are either afraid or in the learning phase. This book uses the KISS approach. IE keep it simple stupid. There are more folks that are starting out than are the true PROS. This book will get you there in a hurry. Best money I have spent in a long time.

In 350 pages, Mr. Georges has given a beginner an amazing course in digital camera fundamentals, software, imaging techniques, and electronic display. So often we are not wise enough in a new subject to even know what to ask, but this author seems to sense that, and answers those questions before they are asked. As I learn more about the possibilities I have with my digital camera, this will be a reference I will want at my fingertips.

Kramers Ergot is a new comix anthology showcasing the very best new cartoonists in comics. Some of the better known contributors include Xeric winners Anders Nilsen and Hans Rickheit, award-winning animation filmmakers Kathleen Lolley & Stefan Gruber , Fort Thunder art associates Ben Jones and Joe Grillo, Neil Fitzpatrick (Neil Jam), Mat Tait (Comix 2000, SBC), and Justin Howe (Coober Skeeber). Stories range from light hearted and whimsical, to existential and psychosexual, to the surreal within the nostalgic. Cartooning styles are also quite varied but all of which are held together by an acute aesthetic sense of book design and long lastingness. Kramers Ergot is the only book of its kind: an exquisitely produced showcase for the finest young cartoonists emerging on the comix scene. Contributors also include Neil Fitzpatrick, Sara Varon, Mark Burrier, Zack Soto, Sammy Harkham and Luke Quigley. Kramers Ergot is edited by twenty-one-year-old Sammy Harkham, who felt that there was a serious dearth of books in well produced formats that presented work by new cartoonists. Many of the established anthologies that previously published unknown cartoonists side-by-side with established artists are no longer doing that anymore, or are now defunct. "Hopefully," Harkham said, "people will pick up an issue of Kramers Ergot and feel like they are getting shown what’s emerging in comics today."
