Book Description

Isolated in the remote Egyptian desert, at the base of Mount Sinai, sits the oldest continuously inhabited monastery in the Christian world. The Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine at Sinai holds the most important collection of Byzantine icons remaining today. This catalogue, published in
conjuction with the exhibition Holy Image, Hallowed Ground: Icons from Sinai, on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from November 14, 2006, to March 4, 2007, features forty-three of the monastery's extremely rare--and rarely exhibited--icons and six manuscripts still little-known to the world at
large.
The exhibition and catalogue bring to life the central role of the icon in Byzantine religious practices. Themes include the icon's status as holy object, the ways in which the icon sanctified the place of worship, and the monks' quest for the holy. The Greek Orthodox monastery at Mount Sinai not
only functioned as a major pilgrimage site for centuries but was also a cultural crossroads at the center of the shifting sands of ecclesiastical and secular politics. The accompanying essays explore how the monastery's contact with the outside world, through pilgrimage, resulted in aesthetic
exchanges between the monastery and Coptic, Crusader, and Islamic art; and between the Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic communities in Europe.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautifully Produced Volume.......2007-03-10

The reproductions in this book are beautiful, the discussion intelligent and thorough. I bought and read it prior to visiting the exhibit, and thought that it provided 95% of the experience of actually being there.

The Getty, which has had an uneven history in its prior exhibits, really did a superb job on this one. The Getty website retains an excellent interactive description of the exhibition.

5 out of 5 stars Just like being there........2007-03-09

Great book full of pictures and explanatory text. The purchase was prompted by a visit to the Getty Museum to view the exhibit. I was familiar with the monastary beforehand from a VHS tape and the exhibit provided a sense of being there and walking its holy and hallowed grounds. A time capsule of religious art and activity. The detail was very intricate and I marveled at the detail in the icons for those using crude and self-made art supplies. These icons are indeed a labor of love. They go back some 1400 years and have a span of 600.

The book serves to recollect my feelings at the exhibit, the next best thing to being at the monastary itself.

5 out of 5 stars Rare Icons.......2007-03-09

This volume is the companion to the recent Getty exhibition of original icons from the St. Catherine Monastery in the Sinai Desert, the presumed site of the Old Testament burning bush. The book provides the scholarly background on the ancient images, some going back to the 6th century and showing stylistic features common to Roman portraiture. The color illustrations are especially well done and true to the tones of the originals that I saw in Los Angeles. The book can be enjoyed simply for the aesthetics for the mesmerizing pictures, or for religious meditation, but also for insight into the historical development of early Christian practices. Given the lavish color printing in a large format, the price is quite reasonable.

    Book Description

If anything marks the image, it is a deep ambivalence. Denounced as superficial, illusory, and groundless, images are at the same time attributed with exorbitant power and assigned a privileged relation to truth. Mistrusted by philosophy, forbidden and embraced by religions, manipulated as “spectacle” and proliferated in the media, images never cease to present their multiple aspects, their paradoxes, their flat but receding spaces. What is this power that lies in the depths and recesses of an image—which is always only an impenetrable surface? What secrets are concealed in the ground or in the figures of an image—which never does anything but show just exactly what it is and nothing else? How does the immanence of images open onto their unimaginable others, their imageless origin? In this collection of writings on images and visual art, Jean-Luc Nancy explores such questions through an extraordinary range of references. From Renaissance painting and landscape to photography and video, from the image of Roman death masks to the language of silent film, from Cleopatra to Kant and Heidegger, Nancy pursues a reflection on visuality that goes far beyond the many disciplines with which it intersects. He offers insights into the religious, cultural, political, art historical, and philosophical aspects of the visual relation, treating such vexed problems as the connection between image and violence, the sacred status of images, and, in a profound and important essay, the forbidden representation of the Shoah. In the background of all these investigations lies a preoccupation with finitude, the unsettling forces envisaged by the images that confront us, the limits that bind us to them, the death that stares back at us from their frozen traits and distant intimacies. In these vibrant and complex essays, a central figure in European philosophy continues to work through some of the most important questions of our time. Jean-Luc Nancy is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the Université Marc Bloch, Strasbourg. The most recent of his many books to be published in English are A Finite Thinking and Multiple Arts. Jeff Fort has translated works by authors such as Jean Genet, Maurice Blanchot, and Jacques Derrida. He is currently a lecturer in the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of California, Berkeley.

2 out of 5 stars Rushed to market, stuck in neutral.......2004-09-06

I ordered this book as a primary text for an intro c*3 class, and I am dissappointed at the large number of typos and poor explanations of steps and procedures. There are many places where in a given tutorial, the instructions do not match to what is required; this left my students forced to guess on how to proceed.
I understand and appreciate the publisher trying to be the first to market, but jeez... have someone actually go thru the exercises with the book at hand! Assuming that all is well has cost my students lots of wasted effort.

3 out of 5 stars Good but rift with typos.........2004-06-01

First of all, congrats for finally getting a book out on Combustion, discreet's amazing motion graphic software. The book covers the surface on many of the software's features. I ordered this for my class's textbook for supplimental lessons at home. However, the tutorials are filled with many typos that would only be caught by people that would know what they are doing and easily found confusing for beginners. The typos have stopped my class in their tracks at home trying to decypher what the next possible step could be, as the book keeps misleading them with incorrect instruction. There are video tutorials of the book's projects on the accompanying cd that demystify the errors but I feel they should've got the printed instructions correct as well. Good book, just watch your step.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A976304. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis documents the introduction of the Appreciative Inquiry (AI) within the U.S. Navy and discusses applications of the Appreciative Inquiry based Large Group Intervention (AI-LGI) within Marine Corps Logistics strategic planning, implementation, and organizational change. It is a follow on from David Nystrom's thesis '360-Degree Feedback, Leadership, Leadership Development, Performance Appraisal'. Unlike traditional top down and bottom up strategies that seek to identify and analyze problems in systems. AI evaluates what gives life to organizations at their best moments by using the power of positive questioning. When combined with a Large Group Intervention, AI is a powerful tool to affect rapid organizational change. This thesis introduces AI, discusses its history, and describes the history of change efforts within the Navy. The thesis documents events leading up to and including the 'Leadership Summit', to include introduction of AI within the U.S. Navy and qualitative analysis of stories that address issues of leadership. It discusses Financial Management implications of implementing this process and describes using AI-LGIs within the strategic management process as a tool for facilitating rapid and collaborative organizational change within Marine Corps Logistics.

3ds max 4 Ground Rules is not, despite its name and the picture of a green-lawned golf course on the cover, about creating terrain and landscapes with 3ds max 4, Discreet's 3-D CG animation package. It's a new series from Autodesk Press, and its charter is to lay the groundwork for new users so they can build their own projects.

Michael Todd Peterson is an experienced writer and 3ds max user, and the breadth and depth of his experience shows in this book. More than 600 pages and 17 chapters cover everything from the absolute basics to advanced and complex features. Sections cover installing and navigating the interface of 3ds max 4, and there is a bird's-eye view of the workflow in a Max project--using basic shapes to build a model; using models to build a scene; adding detail with textures, lights, and particles; adding and animating a camera; and rendering the finished animation to a movie.

Later parts of the book are about modeling. Techniques are discussed for surface modeling, patch modeling, using splines and compound objects, creating editable meshes, and using modifiers and how they work with the stack paradigm. The last third of the book is all about animation: an introduction to animation, using Track View, character animation, and special-effects animation using particles, space warps, and more.

For anyone climbing 3ds max 4's learning curve, this is probably one of the better books available. The author's easy style, the use of screenshots, and the rich material on the CD make this book a valuable asset to any Max user. --Mike Caputo

              Book Description

The first in our new Ground Rules series, this book paves the way to mastery of 3ds max Release 4 basics - that is, the "ground rules" - by inviting readers to work through thoughtfully crafted examples, exercises, and tutorials for this powerful design and animation tool. A refreshing alternative to command-driven books, 3ds max 4 Ground Rules puts novices on the fast-track to new skills as it guides them to an understanding of the fundamental principles underlying 3ds max Release 4 use. Fast-paced coverage spans the entire spectrum, from exploration of the user interface through Character Animation and Special FX. In addition, unique features, such as AVI files and full-color inserts, result in an extraordinarily interactive experience that goes beyond that offered by other introductory books.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great for absolute beginners.......2004-05-04

3D , unlike 2D 'photo' applications, reqire that you know a fair deal about the nature of the 3D world and the multitude of features and modeling techniques before you can do anything!
If like me, you don't know your arc from your omni then this book will get you up and running.
Written in a simple language, you'll find that pidgen descriptions eg. 'a row of buttons will appear under the title box. Click the third button from the left, adjust the value to -20.5, then click on the check box to apply this value' - are a godsend when you're sat in front of your monitor and you don't really know what you're doing yet; things are happening onscreen and you feel that you're making progress. Guiding you through the motions helps give you a feel for the program and you can move into the following chapters with a bit more understanding.
Following the tutorials to build and modify a robot forms the main teaching element (as you only really learn by doing). But I would have liked to see more stand-alone examples of the seperate modeling methods, as you can only read so much about splines, sub-objects or modifiers before it all starts to blur.
Overall though, this book seems as good as any for a complete beginner. Though it's value as a reference book once you've worked through it (due to the absence of stand-alone tutorials) could be limited.
If you want to learn 3D but don't know where to start, try here.

5 out of 5 stars Nice and Easy - Still reading.......2001-12-23

One aspect of the book is that it is easy to read. Samples, examples explanations. Definately worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners.......2001-12-17

I have read many a 3DS MAX book. -- Well I have tried to read many that is. -- Believe me I have tried off and on for a year or so now. --- This book *truly* is a beginners book that will start you off on the ground level and have you doing things very quickly that are fun. -- I learned more with 3 hours and this book in front of MAX than I had in 3 weeks prior just because this book has a good focus.

Everyone gives everything 5 stars... and I try not to... but then again... I usually only feel inclined to rate things I trully feel derserve high praise. -- This is one of those things.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but not a lot detail.......2001-08-07

If you are a newbie to 3ds max then this would be a good book for you. I am on chapter 7 of this book and am finding a small fraction of difficulty. This book doesn't get into as much detail as I would have preferred it to. One thing I didn't like was making this robot model. All it really is, is spheres and cylinders. But I guess it's just a newbie book. So let me just say that its not the best book in the world for max 4. Seriously my friends, if you want to start 3ds max 4, there are better books out there than this one. Overall, this book is an alright book to get a novice modeler up and going.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read, easy to learn.......2001-06-17

This book makes it so easy to learn 3ds max! The writing style is so easy to read and follow. You can learn quickly and painlessly just by doing the examples. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn 3ds max 4.

                    Book Description

The new world was an unspoiled frontier perfect for colonization, a virtual paradise of boundless beauty and limitless resources, untouched by human hands...but not untouched, as the unsuspecting colonists soon discovered. Now marooned on a planet infested with the deadliest Alien species ever encountered, the colonists learn firsthand the Law of the Jungle: adapt or become extinct. And a little helping hand couldn't hurt, inexplicably provided by the selfsame Predators who destroyed the colonists' ship and made them prisoners in paradise. Are these extraterrestrial hunters actually showing sympathy for the humans' plight, or do they have something even more monstrous in mind?
