Learning how to break the rules..........2006-12-23
I had read this book before purchasing it. I bought it to re-read and absorb the points made in the book. It will definitely get you thinking about how to "modify" the perspective in your picture to get the view right.
Great reference for classical perspective.......2002-03-11
A more technical approach to perspective than other books on perspective that I have read. Waston uses analysis of illustrators to demonstrate the points of perspective. I found this most entertaining and interesting.
I try to read this periodically to re-enforce and re-learn the principles of perspective.

A Reasonably Good Book on Sculpture - Various Media.......2001-05-15
This book is a reasonably good book on sculpture on various media (plastic, wood, clay, etc.) with a good show of pictures in it. Works of various shapes in different "flavor"---modern, tribal, etc.
A book that is worth taking a good look and perhaps you want want a copy on your book shelf.

Book Description
This title examines the complex ways that sculpture and photography have intersected, historically, aesthetically, and theoretically. Exploring the important role that images of sculpture have played in the history of photography, this volume also considers the impact that photography has had on the creation and interpretation of sculpture. The essays consider a wide range of topics, including the use of photography by Rodin, Brancusi, David Smith, and various Minimalist sculptors; the manipulation of photographs of sculpture for aesthetic and political purposes; the relationship between sculpture, photography, and gender in the late nineteenth century, as well as in the work of Hesse and Mapplethorpe; and the redefinition of the boundaries between sculpture and photography by artists such as Joseph Beuys and Jeff Wall. Using a variety of approaches, this volume also considers photography as a means of representing three-dimensional works of art.

Mister X.......2007-05-14
Mr. X is a fun futuristic comic. Not as cliche as Superman or X-men, and has some good ideas.
WHAT-- THE-- #V(* ??? (The Confusing Conclusion!).......2006-08-29
I had to wait between 8 and 10 months after reading VOL.1 before VOL.2 came out, despite VOL.2 being advertised in the back of VOL.1. But it was worth the wait... I think! Having just re-read both volumes back-to-back, I must say, that's a MUCH better way to experience Dean Motter's mysterious "epic". There's a number of references in these later episode to things that went on before, but due to Seth's obscure art & storytelling and Dean Motter's EVEN MORE obscure writing (which gets more dense and impenetrable as it goes), it's hard to tell who's who, where we've seen them before, and what's going on-- and why. With all the great covers, posters & other art by Paul Rivoche sitting around, I wondered WHY someone picked this utterly BIZARRE Dave McKean thing for the cover of VOL.2. By the end of the book, I stopped wondering. It a twisted way, it was a perfect fit.
Jeffrey Morgan, who wrote MISTER X Vol.2 (the 1989 comic-book series which followed the 14 original issues by Motter) wrote the intro to this book, an "intellectual" treatise that would fit in AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE magazine. (Take that as you will!) Following this is "Heartsprings & Watchstops", a bizarre, surreal stand-alone episode by Neil Gaiman & Dave Mckean from the 1st issue of A-1 magazine, which came out after Motter's departure from MISTER X. Reportedly, there's a whole slew of these short episodes by different creators, and I'm not quite sure why this one (like the Bill Sienkiewicz episode last time) is included here. But that mystery's nothing compared to the bulk of the book.
VOL.2 breaks down for the most part into 2 main sections. "THE SECRET" is a 3-parter (issues #7-9) which focuses on filthy-rich Whitney Welles & his family. He hires "X" as a private eye, but really seems to be setting him up for a fall. Halfway thru we discover he's mistaken "X" for his long-missing brother since the 1st issue of the comic, and only realizes his error when his REAL brother (who everyone assumed was dead) turns up. One more red herring in the growing mystery of "X"'s identity.
But the madness really escalates in "NIGHTCLUBS & DAYDREAMS", the 5-parter (issues #10-14) that serves as Motter's finale on the series. This arc focuses on a pair of competing nightclubs and music acts they've booked, but that's just a backdrop for the book's main mystery. More and more complications pile up, and it'd be confusing as all get-out under normal circumstances. Unfortunately, as Motter describes in a text piece, his personal life was spiralling out of control at the time, resulting in each successive chapter being harder for anyone to understand. Seth's art follows right along, until HIS last episode (#13) which was done without Motter's "design". (Without explanation, I wonder if Motter, as writer, was laying out the pages of the book? Without him doing this on #13, Seth was on his own.) Motter then describes how the script for #14-- THE FINALE!!!-- was sub-par, and the art even more so. Tragic.
However, readers of THIS book are in for a treat, as Motter took it upon himself, 17 YEARS after his departure, to RE-DO the 14th episode entirely on his own. As a result, the last chapter has a MUCH denser script, we're filled in on a TON of information as it progresses, and the growing confusion, complications and rampant insanity of the proceedings, at the very least, are comprehensible-- and in my view, a LOT prettier to look at! There was at least ONE revelation that made my jaw drop, and among the mysteries revealed was the fact that at least ONE death in VOL.1 never happened, except in one of the character's deluded hallucination. (SAY WHAT??!!)
The ending is not entirely satisfatory... but, like episode 17 of THE PRISONER tv series, it makes you think-- it makes you wonder-- and it makes you wanna go back and RE-READ the whole thing again from the start.
If only Motter-- or Paul Rivoche-- had illustrated the WHOLE THING from start to finish... Ah well! In a city of dreams, I guess I can dream, can't I?

How to Get ANY MAN to do ANYTHING You Want is quite possibly the most evil (and most important) book ever written! It is the definitive guide to solving all of your problems with men, forever. This hilarious and unfair guide to men shows you exactly how to get what you want - when you want it - without a lot of hassle, and makes you laugh all the way to happiness and personal enlightenment. Every woman should own a copy of this book (it fits nicely in your purse, and hides well under the bed). Nothing is left to chance. If you have a man in your life (or want to get a good one) this book shows you how to make him think of you as a goddess as you get him to stop fighting you for control, end arguments quickly and easily, and buy you that diamond tennis bracelet you have had your eye on. This book will make you more popular than you can imagine (well, with guys anyway), and transform a dull, boring relationship into a lively, fun one with lots of romance and affection for both of you.
Customer Reviews:
I absolutely loved it!.......2007-06-13
What a traitor this author must be. Reading this I felt like I was in the guy's locker room alone with a turn coat. The language is a bit raw at times, but not obscene. It's like having an older brother warning you about stuff guys do, and showing you how they think and how to make them get all stupid over you. It was brutally honest. Of course I had to try everything out for myself, and to no surprise, these things worked. Guys for the most part are a lot easier than they let on. A wink and a smile can get you far without having to do anything you feel uncomfortable doing.
Some of what you read here may not sound like it can work, but I have had a lot of fun playing with the advice here, and as long as it works, I am happy to have hot guys doing nice things for me for a change.
It worked for my daughter.......2007-04-26
When my single daughter got this book she was so excited but I rolled my eyes thinking, "Whatever." But I have to admit that since she has read this book she has had more confidence and has seemed to come out of her shell. Lately I have seen her out on the porch talking to various guys in the neighborhood who now wave to her everytime they pass by. She said she really liked the section on "how to meet guys". All you have to do is smile, and these days that's all she seems to be doing - smiling. Its nice to see. She gives this book 5 stars. Who knows - maybe this book can help me get my husband to finish all those projects that need to be done around the house - hmmmm.

Peter Straub's Mr. X is an enthralling, complex tale of a decent young man troubled since childhood by barely understood flashes of precognition and an awareness of a shadowy "other."
Ned Dunstan returns home to Edgerton, Illinois, a raffish and atmospheric Mississippi River city, as his mother, Star Dunstan, lies dying. Impelled to trace his tangled paternal lineage after Star's death, Ned finds himself caught up in a web of murder and other heinous crimes, not only in the present but also in a past that his elderly great aunts Nettie, May, and Joy would prefer remained undisturbed. The aunts, whose remarkable gifts include teleportation and telekinesis, frustrate his search for knowledge, partly to protect their own secrets and also to shield Ned from the mysterious and omnipresent force that seems to dodge his every step. He is aided in his efforts to discover the mysteries of his birth by a doppleganger who may or may not be his twin, and also by a lovely young woman, Laurie Hatch. She is the estranged wife of Stewart Hatch, an Edgerton scion whose own history is inexorably linked with Ned's and with the entire Dunstan family.
The secondary characters, from the elderly aunts to a lawyer named Creech who is the essence of the small-town "fixer," are deftly drawn. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Ned Dunstan's birthday is fast approaching, and every year on this date, Ned experiences a paralyzing seizure in which he is forced to witness scenes of ruthless slaughter perpetrated by a mysterious and malevolent figure in black whom Ned calls Mr. X.
Ned has been drawn back to his hometown, Edgerton, Illinois, by a premonition that his mother, Star, is dying. Before she loosens her hold on life, she imparts to Ned the name of his father, never before disclosed, and warms him that he is in grave danger. Despite her foreboding, Ned's determination to learn as much as possible about his absent father ignites a series of extraordinary adventures that gradually reveal the heart of both his own identity and that of his entirely fantastic family.
He discovers that he is shadowed by an identical twin brother who can pass through doors and otherwise defy the laws of nature; he becomes the lead suspect in three violent deaths; he investigates the secret shadow-world within Edgerton; he learns to "eat time" and remembers the one occasion when he and his sinister brother united into a single being. Finally, at the moment of battle, he must call upon everything he has learned to save his own life.
Brimming with the author's trademark wit, understated eloquence, vibrant characters, and brilliant sense of pace, Mr. X displays Peter Straub at the top of his form.
Customer Reviews:
Fans of Lovecraft LIKE revulsion, right?.......2007-07-27
I just finished it, and feel relief. I hate to leave things unfinished, especially when I've given them so many second chances. It's blue-collar doesn't match the money from the sky, or the shadow out of time.
This book was recommended by my beloved paperback eating machine of a grandmother, likely because she knows I like creepy stuff, not because I'm well-read.
The content is fun enough, for an 80s story that wants us to believe it's a 90s story, but the style begs so desperately for the 'clever yet not pretentious' badge that it ends up less than pretentious, merely pedestrian.
Two stars instead of one because it wasn't bad for its ilk, two instead of three because it wan't as good as it thought it was.
A book that makes you think.......2007-04-01
I've always liked Lovecraft stories, but Poe's poetry has always seemed slightly boring to me. Somehow Straub has melded the two and I think Mr. X is a masterpiece. After reading all of the Tim Underhill and Tom Passmore related books, I decided it was time to read Mr. X and I was not disappointed.
I haven't stopped thinking about this book since I finished it. Ned Dunstan has an odd assortment of relatives that range from a homicidal maniac to deformed cripples with birth defects to kleptomaniacs with enhanced mental powers. It's hard to figure out if the narrator is Ned or his "brother". He may possibly have a split personality. I plan on reading it again to see if I missed a few clues.
Do not waste your money!!!.......2007-03-30
I was determined to finish this book. Eventhough, it was the most hard to follow, confusing and BORING book that I have ever read! It is definitely not a page turner. I was not thrilled, horrified or left in suspense. I kept on reading in the hope it would all come together and make sense. That never happened.
Disturbing...But Captivating.......2006-06-14
This book confused me from the beginning. There is a boy, Ned Dunstan, who is given up by his mother and leads a very disturbed childhood. Everything about Ned's life is bizarre, including bizarre scenes of himself seeing through the eyes of a serial killer. These scenes are explained in great deal, and are very disturbing. As the story goes on, it only gets creepier and in someways, confusing. For the most part I was able to follow the storyline, but I would not recommend this book for anyone who gets squirmish during intense scenes. This book is very graphic, and if you can't appreciate the meaning behind the story, then you should probably not bother. This book is not meant to be humorous, and is intense from pretty much start to finish. I would give this book a 7 out of 10 because, although well written, graphic horror novels are not really my style.
A Great Thriller With Lovecraftian Sensibilities.......2006-05-28
Straub crafts a thriller led by protagonist Ned Dunston, who returns to attend the funeral of his mother and finds himself the lead suspect in several murders.
Along the way he find that the "shadowy" twin brother that he recalls from his youth does exist -- though is still shadowy -- and uncovers secrets surrounding his mother, unmet father, his family background and powers.
A Lovecraftian theme is weaved throughout and in true style of HP, the reader is left with the understanding that the world is not as normal as it seems and deep down is quite disturbing.
A strong recommendation from anyone interested in thrillers with a Lovecraft theme.
