Ian Roberts, thank you for your wonderful book, Creative Authenticity: 16 Principles to Clarify and Deepen Your Artistic Vision! I have read it four times and will continue to refer to it. I have read many art books in the past few years and yours is the best. It isn't a 'how-to' book but more of a 'why' book and Roberts has truly pegged the drive and spirit that makes one want to create art.

I am impressed by the contents of this book. I have been thinking most of these thoughts but this has put these thoughts all together in a way that solidifies all of those thoughts on creativity. I am about half way through it now and will certainly be going back through this book many times over. I do wish that it was available in an audio format. Those of us with failing vision really could use that kind of help.

I've just completed reading this treasure of a book and plan to go back to it again and again. I have something highlighted in every chapter! So often I found myself nodding and saying "Yes! Yes! That's exactly how it is!" Ian Roberts understands the quirky artistic brain, our fantasy fears and foibles and writes so well about them. His writing style is a joy to read.

As a practicing graphic artists for many years, and always trying to understand the creative mood swings in making and creating art. I completely enjoyed the insight Ian Roberts writes about being an artists. Even though he writes from a painter's perspective, his book is completely applicable for all visual art makers. Being a serious artist is not easy and it shouldn't be...doing art is about stuggles...looking at a blank piece of paper or canvas can be frightening and this book breaks down the various areas to help understand and ease that fear. I highly recommend this book to any serious artists who is seeking to understand their own creative process.

Our librarian intoduced us to this one and it's a hit for all age groups. Everyone who "picks it up" becomes engrossed. The format is different & takes a little getting used to but worth every penny! Many catagories, neat facts & trivia, nice artwork, pictures, diagrams, etc. Highly recommeded to encourage reading.
A Gold Medal to the Designers.......2007-07-04
I think it's fair to say that this hip British encyclopedia is an unquestionably 21st century book. Its intricate layout is geared to engage minds acclimated to Internet hot links and lots and lots of graphics. If PICK ME UP had come out twenty years ago, its continual cross-referencing and graphic density might have made it indecipherable. But for today's Acquired Attention Deficit Disorder reader (young or old), the title says it all: Once this fascinating volume is picked up, it will not be set down anytime soon.
PICK ME UP's writers have seen to it that the book has absolutely stellar content. And I was pleased to see that they shirked no delicate issue, choosing to engagingly explain topics that public school teachers in the States would only tackle with a parental permission slip. Not that the book is prurient; rather, it turns its sensible gaze upon all aspects of behavior and history in such an astute, clearheaded way, one is inclined to turn its pages again and again.

A Pretty cool book.............2007-03-22
This book has some nice patterns and includes an area in the middle of the book with pictures of the completed projects. I like this -- it helps you see what a pattern looks like and if you would want to spend the time knitting it. What I really like is how she rates each project with a fun rating system -- Flirtation (quick and easy), Summer Fling (requires a bit more time) or Love 'o your Life (you'll need to put a lot of work into it). She also give you variations on each pattern so you have the ability to make it unique and your own. I look forward to making some fun items.

I got this book as a gift from a non-knitting relative. After flipping through it casually (and seeing the kooky pictures and read the bit about the author rubbing needles on her head), I tucked it away for a few months. What a mistake! This book has so many patterns, and the variations included with each pattern, while a little bit confusing, make this one of my favorite knitting books to just flip through.
As a fairly new knitter, lately I've found myself grabbing it to look at the explanation for various stitches when I can't quite get it from Stitch and Bitch.
Will I be making beer cozies or hand-holding mittens? No. But I would still recommend this book.

If I had the time, I would knit all the patterns in this book...I liked them all that much. There is quite a range of patterns, from frilly girly things to not so frilly girly things. The best thing about this book is that most of the patterns have 2 or more variations given and also tips on how to go about making the pattern completely your own. So you're actually getting at least double the patterns that are written in the book. I would definitely recommend this book to other knitterly types.
Not exactly self-inclusive........2007-01-04
I've been knitting scarves with the garter stitch and stockinette stitch for awhile, so although I'm comfortable with needles in my hands, I don't know too many tricks. I was excited to see the different stitches and lace patterns in the book, but it took more time to work them out than I think it should have because the abbreviations ('yf' 'yo') are not quite explained in the same way in which they are to be used. Also, some abbreviations aren't explained at all. As someone who hasn't encountered stitch patterns before, I found this pretty confusing. Also, I found some errors, most notedly in the instructions to make a six-stitch cable (in case anyone wants to know, the instructions for row four should actually be used for row FIVE; for row four, simply repeat row two). Basically, it has some cool stuff, but if you're pretty new to knitting, make sure you have somebody more advanced around to help you out when the instructions hit a snag. Also, they should have probably hired a proof-reader.

If you look past the goofily-styled photos, there's a lot of useful information here that goes beyond the usual beginners' books. Besides the how-to basics, the author covers both English & Continental methods of knitting, how to make your own knitting needles, the basics of techniques like Magic Loop, the "jogless jog" for stripes, and tricks like how to know if you have enough yarn to finish a row. There are also a couple of crochet basics which are useful to know (and instructions for a simple crochet flower, a nice extra). Each pattern concludes with ideas for adapting or personalizing that particular design, which is also helpful.

While I am a big fan of his website and stories, the stuff in this book is pure crap. Half of "his" lines are old lines I have heard used a dozen times. A couple of them are adaptations of jokes that are from the 2nd grade -- and weren't even funny then. Personally I think this is very out of character for Tucker. A real letdown.

It's not that this guy isn't original, although he's not. (His act has not only been done by better writers, it's been done by every drunken idiot you hung out with in college.) It's that he's not even particularly clever.
Seriously - buy yourself a copy of "Animal House" instead... at least that was original (at the time) and well written. Then, with your change, go out & get really wasted, and tell your friends about it. It worked for me - and we laughed and laughed and laughed.

For anyone who is trying to decorate a house from the mid 19th century to World War 1, this is the book to own. Whether you want a period style or not this book will help you understand what the house looked like when it was new and what the intentions of the builders and first owners probably were. It is jammed with photos and they are mostly middle-class houses that an ordinary person can relate to. Get 2 (you'll want to give one as a gift).
