1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2007-09-18

Absolutely useless. Waste of money. Not worthy of its description. This is NOT A REFERENCE BOOK. This is a (poor) photographic journal of a collection, with speculative values based purely on opinion.

1 out of 5 stars Collectors guide?.......2001-11-25

Horrible prints, can hardly see details, blury pictures in black and white (a very few colored). Set up is okay, but again, pictures are horrible and crammed into the page. A waste of money!

1 out of 5 stars Not for Novices.......1999-12-13

The title "Collector's Guide..." led me to believe that there would be informational text about dating, printing techniques, and other descriptive information about post cards. The book is entirely illustrations of post cards in various categories and their prices...fine for long-time collectors, but useless for someone seeking historical information.

3 out of 5 stars Short on info, long on pictures, prices outmoded.......1999-08-28

This reference book for postcard collectors is entirely given over to images of the cards themselves, with no history, grading guide, or other information. That being said, it has thousands of photos of various kinds of postcards, well organized by subject (but I wish the reproduction were clearer). The prices are dated, and do not reflect the impact that Ebay, Amazon, and other online auction houses have had on postcard availability. All in all it's a nice pictorial reference, but not a must-have.

This information is impossible to find elsewhere, at least compiled as it is here. If you are into the history and science behing painting, this book is for you...I had to wait a long time to find this book used through Amazon, and waited even longer for vol.3 (which is still available new). I can't find any info. on vols. 1 and 4. If anyone knows if these even actually made it into print, I'd appreciate hearing any information you have.

5 out of 5 stars Something for everyone, even science geeks.......2001-06-17

This the second of the National Gallery's series on the history and science of pigments. The histories of each pigment are well thought out, and unlike many older books on this subject, the collective authors have not neglected the non-western world. From the perspective of someone who is active in living history groups and calligraphy societies, the lists of who used these pigments, along with when and where, is a welcome feature. As someone who hunts down minerals to make them into paint, the information on IR and X-ray diffraction data, along with color plates of the pigments examined with polarized-light and scanning electron microscopy are a welcome change compared to most other books on historical pigment use. As a scientist, the analytical info is worth the price of the book all by itself, from my point of view. Much of the discussion on the occurence and art history of the mineral pigments has found its way into geology and mineralogy classes I have taught.

Some of the material in this volume can also be found in Gettens and Stout almost word for word, though in the articles where this is most conspicuous, Gettens is always first or second author. To be fair, the editors of this series have never pretended that the articles were new material - though much of it has been new to me - but rather revised and updated material from the journal _Studies in Conservation_. Since the venerable Gettens was deceased by the time this volume was published, he may not have had the opportunity to revise his own material. Gettens was one of the instigators of the Artists' Pigment series, and since most of his research has not been superceded as far as I can tell, it's a small complaint and certainly not grounds to avoid this book. Don't avoid this book! Out of the three volumes in this series, this volume (Vol. 2) is the one I like best, probably because it covers most of the mineral pigments and some of the artificial pigments that I find or make. And unlike some other books on pigments, written by armchair scholars, it is obvious that the collective authors of this volume got down and dirty and played with the paints. The hands-on experience really shines through.

As someone who barely has time to keep up with the literature in my own field, I found the Artists' Pigments series a welcome addition to my library - a lot of well-researched and well-written material all in one place. I must admit that my favorable opinion of this series is partly based on the wealth of scientific analyses therein, which may not help a non-nerd evaluate this book, but I will point out that all my art-fiend friends, some of whom make their living in the fine arts, are constantly trying to borrow it.

Not JUST sports. But people in action is hard to make interesting...especially when most of your body is in the water! These are great photographs. YES, there are nudes! My favorites are the older photos, though. From the historical and revered Aperture Publishers. Originally $55, oversized hardback, 94 pgs.

                From Library Journal

At long last, the familiar and overused photographs of the "Day of Infamy" can be retired. The 430 prints in this new and welcome collection were gathered from various Japanese and U.S. sources, and most have never been seen by the general public. The majority were taken during the height of the air raid itself, many from Japanese cockpits. Along with numerous maps and sketches, they are arranged according to the various phases of the battle and are supplemented with commentary by two of Gordon Prange's coauthors (Goldstein and Katherine V. Dillon). The overall effect is to give the reader an uncanny sense of being present at the battle. This book will make a wonderful companion piece to Prange's now-classic At Dawn We Slept.

5 out of 5 stars Shouldn't be your first book on the attack, but..........2007-08-30

If you have gleaned all the knowledge possible from the multitude of first person and general overviews published, this book will give you a concise knowledge of the tactics and timeline of the events. It contains a wealth of photographs that you will not see anywhere else, and each one of them is pinpointed to the minute when it was taken. You will see the first bomb hit the floating drydock, you will see the California disappear into a sea of burning oil, and you will see period photographs of the men involved (on both sides), what they did, and where and when they died doing it. True, some of the photographs are dark and lack contrast in the details, but hey, if you don't know what the Oglala or Nevada looks like up close, then you are not ready for this book. Another nice feature is that you rarely have to turn the page to study a photo as it is referenced in the text. It would have been nice to have this book printed on glossy pagestock, but I believe the publishers suspected it would not have a wide audience. Nonetheless, it is an invaluable reference for the serious student of the Day of Infamy.

                3 out of 5 stars Adaquate.......2006-07-30

Nice collection of period photos related to this part of history. and the written material isn't that bad though neitehr insightful or really much.

That's the sum value of this book.

                1 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!.......2005-11-13

This book is absolutely terrible, a waste of money. The photographs are so badly reproduced that they're little more than muddy smudges. The quality is far worse than anything your local newspaper can produce in the way of pictures.

I can only assume the current version is different than the one that was given five stars. I've seen many of these photographs in other places ... and some original prints. Most of them come from beautiful monochromatic prints, not difficult to reproduce or to print in books. And, in this paperback version while the size is nice, it's a waste. You could double the size of the book and it would still be a waste.

There are many examples of a caption identifying something (very large something at that) on the deck of a ship. It isn't so much that you can't identify the object, you can't even make out the ship.

There are many instances of this. If you're inclined to buy this sort of thing, this is one instance in which you'll be far better off looking at a copy in a regular book store to insure you're not disappointed and throwing your money away. I know that I threw mine away.

5 out of 5 stars If You Read Only 2 Books On Pearl Harbor, This Has to Be One.......2001-06-19

I just finished "At Dawn We Slept" and was very impressed with it. I then saw the movie "Pearl Harbor". On a coffee stop at the bookstore, I saw this book, and bought it on the good impression of a similar volume about D-Day by the same editors. The coffee was just OK, but the book is tremendous.

This book, as did the D-Day issue (see my review if you're interested), presents original photos tied together with a fairly simple narrative that tells the story of the Pearl Harbor attack. You'll get to see photos of all the major players, Kimmel, Short, Yamamoto, et al. Some of the attack photos are pretty amazing. The original Japanese photos are stunning and good for hardware fans. The Japanese ariel photos lend great detail to the story. The superimposed flight patterns are very instructive. As I implied above, after Prange's book and the movie, this book was the crowning glory to my Pearl Harbor reading.

This book will catch you off-guard. At first it looks very simple, which it is, almost for children, but when you dive into it, it gets surprisingly detailed. All the US planes that were involved are present in photographs, even a B-18! The text presents facts and occurances, and no politics. 90% of the ship photos are spectacular.

So, go out and buy this book. You really should have it, then read one of the many books about Pearl Harbor. The photos will make the story live. Well done Mr. Goldstein and Ms Dillon.

                Book Description

"December 7, 1941, a date which will live in infamy." So did President Franklin Delano Roosevelt address the American people about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that initiated America's entry into World War II.

But what if things had happened differently?

A Date Which Will Live in Infamy is an anthology of fictional alternatives to the events that led up to, occurred during, and followed directly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The authors and their original stories that appear here for the first time are:

"The Sumter Scenario: A Time Wars Story" by Simon Hawke • "The Secret History of Mr. Churchill's Revenge" by Tony Geraghty • "Cain" by Jim DeFelice • "Pariah" by Ed Gorman • "Green Zeroes" by R. J. Pineiro • "The East Wind Caper" by James Reasoner • "Path of the Storm" by William C. Dietz • "The Fourth Scenario" by William Hallahan • "Victory at Pearl Harbor" by Brendan DuBois • "I Relieve You, Sir" by Barrett Tillman • "Beer, Betrayal, and Ho Chi Minh" by Doug Allyn • "A Terrible Resolve" by William H. Keith, Jr. • "December 7th, 2001" - A Classroom on the American Continent" by Allen C. Kupfer

2 out of 5 stars Too defeatist in my opinion.......2002-07-29

After reading through this collection of "What-If?" stories, I can tell that I will not be holding on to this too much. Although the stories themselves are pretty good for the pulp novel status. Overall, a majority of the stories in this book are too defeatist in nature. The actual event though horrible and a loss for the US probably would not of lead to some of the time-lines that some of these authors pose. A number of them list the West Coast of the US being over run or captured. Finally, as others have stated the appendices listed are the good parts of this book. They explain the realities behind the attack, a time line of the attack, and finally an explanation of possible alternitives and the chances of them affecting the outcome of the attack. Possible better alternative histories of the attack on Pearl Harbor could be found in the book "Rising Sun Victorious" or in the books "What-IF and What-If 2"

5 out of 5 stars A Needed Book For This Time.......2002-01-07

This is one of the very best collections of alternate world histories that I have read and one I would use in the classroom were I still teaching. However, the stories as good as they are take second place to two very thoughtful essays by experts at the end of the book. Paul Thomsen gives an excellent diplomatic perspective of what went right and what went wrong in events leading to the attack. The greatest praise must go to historian William Forstchen who sums up the "The Realities of an Alternate Pearl Harbor". He brings out things that most of us either did not know or did not fully understand. It is his premise that even in the worst case scenarios all going against us, a third wave of attack destroying the oil tanks stored at Pearl which would keep us out of the Pacific for a year, the sinking of the three carriers that were away at the time of the attack which would mean no victories at Midway or the Coral Sea, the taking over of the base with veteran Japanese soldiers which would lose us Hawaii, and even the bombing of the Panama Canel which would take a year to rebuild, we would still have prevailed. Maybe the war would have been a year or two longer, but American moral resolve and production would have won out in the end. We were heavily devalued by most of the Japanese command and they would not foresee that in the American gestalt there is a sense of morality that makes us fight for what we see as not just territorial goals, but for freedom. In doing so we believe in complete victory. If anything, the Japanese would have been worse off to have gone beyond their success at Pearl. A year longer to get started would have meant more production of weapons on our part and by 1946 we would have had more than three atomic bombs. We likely would have laid waste to Japan to pay back for the conquest of Hawaii, the bombing of Panama, and raids on California. As it was, the Japanese were surprised at the resolve we did show. They thought we would be forced to compromise and negotiate a peace. They were as surpised as Muslim fanatics must be today in seeing our reaction to the attack on the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon in Washington D.C. and related actions. We prevailed then, we will now.

4 out of 5 stars Pearl Harbor Redux.......2001-11-24

An anthology of allohistories, that is, "what-if" stories based on the attack on Pearl Harbor. Like all anthologies, some stories are superb, some are weak, but overall the level is quite high. The only flaw, and it isn't a serious one, lies at the hands of the editors in their selection and organization of the stories. I'll leave the weakest part of the collection, Part 1, for last.
Part 2, 'Alternate Actions', are the stories by Pineiro, Reasoner, Dietz, and Hallanhan. These are the most traditionally "what-if" stories, hinging on a minor event causing a major change in result. Three are very good, and one, Reasoner's 'The East Wind Caper' is outstanding. A hard-boiled private eye (see Bogart in the role) stumbles onto the Japanese plot and saves the day. Well told, tightly paced and humorous.
Part 3, 'Alternate Aftermaths', contains stories by DuBois, Tillman, Allyn, and Keith. Of these, Keith's 'A Terrible Resolve' is the best, a tale of Japanese victories which lead the Empire up to the beaches of California before the success of the Manhatten Project and the actions of American kamikazi bombers, turn the Imperial Navy back.
A Postscript by Kupfer, which posits a Nazi victory over both America and Japan, is the most chilling story in the book.
The Appendices give an excellent historical background of the real world event, of the military and diplomatic realities which the allohistorians in the anthology had to manipulate for our entertainment.
Now, the worst for last, and as I previously said, it isn't too bad. Part 1, 'Alternate Architects', has the four stories by Hawke, Geraghty, DeFelice, Gorman. Very little allohistorical content in any of these, and what little there is, is only background color. Mostly these four just rehash old conspiracy theories about Roosevelt and/or Churchill knowing that the attack was going to happen and allowed it to go on in the hopes American would enter the war against Germany. I've got no problem with this belief, though I think, like most conspiracies, the proponents are assuming malice where simple incompetence is enough of an explanation. My problem with these stories is that so much of the tale is given over to rehashing the arguements, lecturing the reader on why the plot really did happen, that the stories are just plain boring. The editors could have had a much stronger anthology by leaving this part out and putting more of the rest in.
One observation, something that gave me a small grin. When reading the stories, watch for similarities between them. Variations on the phrase "cigarette, cigar, and pipe smoke" pops up in an awful lot of stories. I suspect the editors handed our a very detailed background guide to the authors, and some of them lifted material out of it verbatim.

                Book Description

Pearl Harbor is the story of the worst battle defeat ever suffered by the U.S., and of how courage and ingenuity rose from the smoldering wreckage to build the worlds most powerful war machine and, in victorys aftermath, to wage peace with even greater scope and success. In stirring text and dramatic photography, much of it rarely seen, LIFE brings Pearl Harbor alive in all its terror and heroism.

Don't look to this book for accurate or in-depth information on the attack on Pearl Harbor. This book is useful for the photos and as a companion to books like At Dawn We Slept by Gordon Prange or Walter Lord's Day of Imfamy.

What do you expect from a Life book. Great pictures and that is what this book delivers. Unlike other books dealing with Pearl Harbor, this Life book examines the conditions in both the U.S. and Japan, then goes in detail about the attack, and then shows some of the personal glimpses of some of the participants sixty years later. This book excels in both its photos and personal portrayals of people.
There are some flaws in this book. An experienced person can pick them out quite easily. For instance, it talks about the battleship Shaw blowing up, well the Shaw was a destroyer. It also details the invasion of Belgium and Netherlands, and states the invasion of France was later, both invasions occurred at the same time. There were other mistakes, so hopefully this does not confuse the beginning historian.
This book was a OK read, and the pictures are great.

                      Book Description

When bombs rained down on Pearl Harbor in 1941, Japanese American college students were among the many young men enrolled in ROTC and called upon to defend the islands against invasion immediately after the attack. In a matter of weeks, however, the military government questioned their loyalty and disarmed them.

In this book, Franklin Odo places the largely untold story of the war-time experience of these young men in the context of the community created by their immigrant families and its relationship to the larger, white-dominated society. At the heart of the book are vivid oral histories that recall the young men's service on the home front in the Varsity Victory Volunteers, a non-military group dedicated to public works, as well as in the segregated 442nd Regimental Combat Team that fought in Europe and the Military Intelligence Service. Odo shows how their war-time experiences and their post-war success in business and politics contributed to the simplistic view of Japanese Americans as a model minority in Hawai'i and glossed over significant differences in their lives and perspectives. No Sword to Bury is a book about a critical moment in ethnic identity formation among the first generation of Americans of Japanese descent (the nisei) as well as a history of their community during the war.
