Book Description
During the last centuries of the "Empire of the Romans," Byzantine artists created exceptional secular and religious works that had an enduring influence on art and culture. In later years, Eastern Christian centers of power emulated and transformed Byzantine artistic styles, the Islamic world adapted motifs drawn from Byzantium's imperial past, and the development of the Renaissance from Italy to the Lowlands was deeply affected by Byzantine artistic and intellectual practices. This spectacular book presents hundreds of objects in all media from the late thirteenth through mid-sixteenth centuries. Featured in full-color reproductions are sacred icons, luxuriously embroidered silk textiles, richly gilded metalwork, miniature icons of glass, precious metals and gemstone, and elaborately decorated manuscripts. In the accompanying text, renowned scholars discuss the art and investigate the cultural and historical interaction between these major cultures-the Christian and Islamic East and the Latin West. Continuing the story of the critically acclaimed The Glory of Byzantium: Art and Culture of the Middle Byzantine Era, A.D. 843-1261, this book-the first to focus exclusively on the last centuries of the Byzantine era-is a highly anticipated publication that will not be superceded for generations.

There is a great need for such books on Byzantine Art. These three expo. and books by the Met on Byzantium are magnificent! I wish others will follow on Post-Byzantine Art.
Correction to Previous Review.......2004-05-25
The first exhibition, "The Age of Spirituality", shown in 1977, was organized by the eminent scholar, Kurt Weitzmann, Professor Emeritus of Princeton University (1904 -1993).
It is also important to note the essay written by Archbishop Damianos of Sinai, Pharan, and Riatho, Abbot of the Holy Greek Orthodox Monastery of Saint Catherine, Sinai, Egypt who on page 335 writes,"...holy icons are more than artful and historical objects. They are a vital entity and a vibrant presence in the liturgical life of the Church, which is the very context that sanctioned and fostered their creation, existence, and use from early Christian times." He goes on to say, "Indeed, by their captivating formal purity, transparency, and clarity, icons create what we may call a resonance or an uplifting in the spiritual sense. They are statements of faith ..."
Lastly, mention must be made of the conclusion of the catalogue and exhibition, which focuses on the influence of Late Byzantine icons on Northern Renaissance art. Many masterpieces are exhibited including Memling, van der Weyden, Jan Van Eyck and Gerard David. They are breathtaking, but perhaps too much icing. A preview of Ms. Evans's next exhibition?
Monumental.......2004-05-13
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has put together its third monumental exhibition reflecting early Christian and Byzantine art. The first exhibition, "The Age of Spirituality", organized by Helen C. Evans was shown in 1977 and explored Christian art between the third and eighth centuries. Twenty years later, the persevering Ms. Evans was responsible for the wonderful "The Glory of Byzantium, A.D. 843-1261". This exhibit, "Byzantium: Faith and Power (1261 - 1557) is the last of this historic trilogy and is a testimony to Ms. Evans and her team, including Mahrukh Tarapor, who visited 35 countries and in a feat of international diplomacy convinced 129 museums, churches, monasteries, collectors and libraries to part with their treasures. Approximately 350 examples of Byzantine art have been contributed with only the monasteries of Mount Athos holding out. The exhibit runs through July 4, 2004.
The eminent and long respected icon dealer, Dick Temple, writes:
"The exhibition 'Byzantium, Faith and Power (1261-1557)' currently at the Metropolitan Museum in New York is, in my view, the greatest icon exhibition I have ever seen or ever will see. There are loans from 27 countries around the world. Monasteries and museums in Greece, Egypt, Russia and the Balkans as well as the great collections of Europe and the USA have given up their most fabulous treasures for this incredible event. If, 20 or 30 years ago, someone had said to me that one day I would see under the same roof the Annunciation from Ohrid, the Twelve Apostles from the Pushkin Museum, two monumental icons by Andrei Rublyov from the Tretyakov Gallery, 40 icons from Saint Catherine's Monastery at Sinai, the British Museum's icon of the Triumph of Orthodoxy and other similar wonders, I would not have believed them. Well, it is happening now."
There are many other important examples that Mr. Temple could have used. This sumptuous and amazing exhibition should not be missed. The one in 1997 drew nearly 500,000 visitors and this one should top that.
The catalogue, which accompanies this exhibition, is massive. It spans 680 pages and contains more than 800 color plates. The illustrations are beautifully reproduced. It contains important essays and descriptions of the objects by a renowned group of over 100 scholars. Please, please please - do yourself a favor and see this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition and purchase the accompanying catalogue, which will give you much pleasure. Ms. Evans is owed every civilized person's gratitude for her awe-inspiring effort.
Crumbs from the table.......2004-05-09
This book details late Byzantine art (mostly icons, medallions, and manuscript illuminations) during the reign of Constantinople's last ruling dynasty, the Palaiologoi. Illustrations are small and the art historical writing reads like a random collection of graduate-level symposium papers (on such topics as church vestments and late tomb sculpture) and largely failing to engage the reader. The lack of narrative focus and quality works of art also lends an overall impression that this exhibition represents a culling of whatever happened to be at hand to produce yet another "blockbuster" that lacks much of either faith or power.
Book Description
The vibrant culture of Byzantium influenced the artistic traditions of neighboring cultures in Western Europe and the Islamic East well into the modern era. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2004 exhibition catalogue Byzantium: Faith and Power, 1261-1557 was among the first to focus on the art of the empire’s final two centuries and its exceptional heritage. This collection of essays by international scholars continues to expand on this area of study, exploring critical issues of politics, trade, religion, and culture that helped shape the last centuries of the empire as well as the rise of the early modern age. By taking different and innovative approaches to the period, the authors arrive at a more complete portrait of Byzantium and its artistic legacy. Included are essays by Hans Belting, Professor Emeritus of Art History and Media Studies, Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe, and Honorary Professor, University of Heidelberg, and Thomas F. Mathews, Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.

Book Description
This well-written and fully illustrated history of mechanical copying before Xerox reveals the importance of the humble copy press from its origins in England in 1770 to its demise in the 1930s. The work is divided into two parts; in Part One, historian Barbara Rhodes discusses the social impact of the copy press in the office place and the traditions, materials, and methods that were used. In Part Two, William Streeter takes the reader into early development and manufacturing of the copy press. With over a thousand line drawings, photographs, and actual U.S. Patent Office documents, Streeter presents an incredible array of copying equipment. This work is an important addition to the libraries of copybook, and eary industrial equipment collectors, conservators, and historians of British and American business history.

Great Starting Comic for all Ages.......2007-09-05
If I had the choice I would give this 4 and a half stars but I don't think its a 5 since its mostly light fare with only few foreshadowings of the epic fantasy adventure to come.
Bone Vol. 1 is the start of the adventures of Fone Bone, Phoney Bone and Smiley Bone. They are cousins kicked out of Boneville for Phoneys wrong doings and left in the great unknown. This is where there journey begins. They soon get split up and the comic is mostly about there finding each other and just setting up the story for the volumes to come.
I highly recommend it to fans of books, comics books, cartoons or anything fun/cute. Don't judge it by its cover, there's a deep and slightly dark fantasy story to be had which only begins to bloom in this first volume.

Most excellent all age entertainment.......2007-08-10
Over the years, I'd picked up single issues of Bone now and again, and was quite enchanted with the quality of artwork and story telling. But was a bit let down that they were published in black and white, which didn't really seem to fit with the rest of the graphic look of the books.
Finally, they have been colorized! The color treatment here is superb. Smith seems to be mining the Carl Barks and Walt Kelly territory, but he's got him own special gifts to display here, in this collection of reprints enjoyable for youngsters and their parents. Highly Recommended for all ages.
Cute one for the kids.......2007-08-07
Set your expectations properly and you'll find a fair story here. They're simple characters in simple, kid-safe adventures. There's Smiley, the tall guy with a very short brain, Phoney with his inane get-rich schemes, and Fone Bone, the protagonist, an all-around nice guy trying to do the right thing for everyone. We also have bold dragons, ineptly evil rat-beings (but I like rats!), a beautiful maiden for chaste and silly romance, and other characters that are easy to identify and to identify with. Then, behind them all, there's the mysterious bad guy, plotting against ...
Well, just see for yourself. The plot and characters work well for unsophisticated readers. Still, the text doesn't talk down to a young reader with an artificially stripped-down vocabulary. If you or yours are in the target demographic, it could be a good bit of fun.

A very fun read........2007-08-03
I'm kindof rediscovering graphic novels again after many years, and I definitely am glad that I came across this first volume of the Bone series. The characters are very fun, the plot interesting and engaging, and the artwork is visually captivating. It makes good fantasy adventure reading.
Somewhat funny.......2007-05-17
The graphics, paper quality, and general presentation of this book are all excellent. The author is a skilled artist. However I eventually got bored with it after a while. It was funny at the beginning, but the same humor was all the way through.

One by one, they find their way into a deep, forested valley filled with wonderful and terrifying creatures." So begins Smith's charming masterpiece. Like the best Disney and Warner Brothers cartoons combined,
Bone had me laughing out loud. I firmly believe that once you read
Bone you're hooked for life. The beautiful hardcover packaging is well worth the extra money.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Ok, whimsical sort of comic, at times. I can see where this would be quite popular with kids, with its cross between Disney comics and the look of casper the ghost, wendy the little witch, hot stuff, and all those sort of gohst line of characters. This is what it reminded me of, anyway. Not enough to want to read any more though.
Great Series!.......2007-02-04
I was hooked about 3 or 4 pages in. After I read this i went and bought the next 4 available volumes. I cant for the remaining books to come out. The color looks great, I have not previously read Bone until this color edition.
Stupid, Stupid Rat Creatures!.......2006-08-14
Color. It is amazing what a little color can do to a story. Now, I know I am going to anger those that are hardcore black and white Bone readers, but this critic found more enjoyment reading the fully-colored second chapter to this series and less enjoyment reading the first book which I found in rather drab ink. Is that superficial of me to say? Is it like saying I prefer a non-smoker to a smoker without taking into account his/her personality? Perhaps, but for me it was very clear with this opening book. Without the bold colors, the imagination seemed to be less, the humor seemed more cardboard, and the characters felt less original. While I still enjoyed learning the history of Fone Bone and his entrance into Thorn's life, I just couldn't get into this opening book like I did the original. Call me crazy, but I didn't put this book down with a great excitement to read anything but a full color version of the third collection.
Again, you won't find me giving this book a bad mark, but there was something lacking from this first collection to the second collection. The second collection seemed adventurous, infamous, and quite boiled, but this first book seemed choppy, secluded, and rather unplanned. From the opening segments with the locusts, to the sudden downfall of snow randomly, to the unclothed bath with Thorn, I just felt unmoved. On the counterpoint, there were scenes that I just loved. Oddly, with this first collection it was more of a hodgepodge of themes than a focused story. Smith has done a fabulous job of creating a enormous world with mystery and excitement, but without the color and at times cheaply drawn panels (i.e. the introduction of the rat king and the hooded mystery man) it just feels rushed. Again, I could sound superficial, but this opener without the color drawings just didn't feel the emotion behind this story. Ug - call me old-timer - but I like color, bold strokes, and deep mahogany emotion.
Enough about the grudging, what did I like about this story? I continued to fall in love with the mystery of Bone and the connection with the dragons. Where does Thorn fall into this picture? Who is the masked man? I love the fact that Gran'ma can fight better than anyone else in the story! I love the fact that the hooded man is on the search for someone outside of our main Bone character. I love the darkness that Smith has chosen to head in this epic story. That is the only plus that I can give this black and white story, the ability to expose the darkness stronger and the classic pure characters. One element that I didn't see (or perhaps ignored) in the second book but was extremely relevant in this opening story is the sexual undertones. Surprising as this sounds, but there is something eerie between Thorn and Fone that Smith is not afraid to bring to the picture. I didn't see this coming, and was rather shocked/intrigued by the rather adult situation in what is promoted as a child's book (while we all know it is not ...) All of these moments in "Out of Boneville" started a strong chapter to a very original series.
Overall, I was impressed again, but at the same time rather unimpressed. I definitely need to finish this series with color, but others will probably be angry with my words. I love the characters. I love how they do not fit within the parameters of other graphic novels, and that the image that is presented on the cover (one of a cute cuddly character) is different than that which is inside the covers. This is a surprising story. I cannot wait to finish the series. I suggest this to anyone wanting to start the epic, but I strongly recommend the colored version!
Grade: **** out of *****
The Start Of A Great Adventure.......2005-06-02
"Out From Boneville" is the first of nine volumes in a graphical fantasy adventure written and drawn by Jeff Smith. It is a wonderful blend of humor, fantasy, and mystery which creates an engaging adventure that leaves the reader wanting more.
The story opens with the three Bone cousins (Fone, Smiley, and Phoney), who have just managed to lose the angry townspeople who have chased them out of their home town because of the dealings of Phoney. Unfortunately, they have chased them right of their map of the known world, and they don't know how to get back. A swarm of locusts then causes them to become separated leaving Fone searching for the other two. He finds himself stuck in a valley trying to last the winter, after which he hopes to find his cousins and then they can try to find their way back home.
There are many twists to the story as well. There is a dragon that occasionally appears, but Fone can't seem to convince anyone else that dragons exist. There are the Rat People, who are the main villains, who try to capture and eat Fone, but are often foiled by the dragon or their own stupidity. There is Thorn, a beautiful young woman whom Fone meets near the end of winter, and her Grandmother who likes to race cows. There is Kingdok, the leader of the Rat People, and the mysterious Hooded One, who is clearly looking for Phoney, but we don't know why.
This is a highly entertaining series, and well worth reading. The series is available in nine volumes, or as a one volume edition (1300 pages). The volumes don't stand on their own, which is about the only negative I can think of, so you may want to go with the one volume edition.
A beautiful start to a top-notch graphic novel series.......2004-07-29
'Bone: Out From Boneville,' collects issues #1-6 of Jeff Smith's seminal Fantasy-Humor comic series that first kicked off in 1991. Anyone with an appreciation for top-notch comic book storytelling will quickly appreciate Smith's keen sense of compelling, exciting narrative blended in with keen-humor and characterization in every panel. For those not sure what this series is actually about, in a nutshell it can be described as a fantasy epic with strong overtones of humor and adventure populated with compelling characters of human, animal and mythic-being variety. Whether or not you're a fan of the fantasy genre you will nonetheless find yourself compelled with the story from the get-go thanks to Smith's wonderful storytelling ability. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.
