    Book Description

In Cameroon, a monumental “statue of liberty” is made from scrap metal. In Congo, a thriving popular music incorporates piercing screams and carnal dances. When these and other instantiations of the aesthetics of Africa and its diasporas are taken into account, how are ideas of beauty reconfigured? Scholars and artists take up that question in this invigorating, lavishly illustrated collection, which includes more than one hundred color images. Exploring sculpture, music, fiction, food, photography, fashion, and urban design, the contributors engage with and depart from canonical aesthetic theories as they demonstrate that beauty cannot be understood apart from ugliness.

Highlighting how ideas of beauty are manifest and how they mutate, travel, and combine across time and distance, continental and diasporic writers examine the work of a Senegalese sculptor inspired by Leni Riefenstahl’s photographs of Nuba warriors; a rich Afro-Brazilian aesthetic incorporating aspects of African, Jamaican, and American cultures; and African Americans’ Africanization of the Santería movement in the United States. They consider the fraught, intricate spaces of the urban landscape in postcolonial South Africa; the intense pleasures of eating on Réunion; and the shockingly graphic images on painted plywood boards advertising “morality” plays along the streets of Ghana. And they analyze the increasingly ritualized wedding feasts in Cameroon as well as the limits of an explicitly “African” aesthetics. Two short stories by the Mozambican writer Mia Couto gesture toward what beauty might be in the context of political failure and postcolonial disillusionment. Together the essays suggest that beauty is in some sense future-oriented and that taking beauty in Africa and its diasporas seriously is a way of rekindling hope.

    Book Description

Max Beckmann was among the greatest painters of the 20th century, yet no retrospective of his work has been mounted in the art capitals of New York, London, and Paris in over 30 years. Perhaps the lapse of attention has to do with the importance of abstraction in 20th-century art, and Beckmann's work is always figurative, simultaneously muscular and enigmatic and has enormous and unsettling power. Beckmann began his career as a naturalist and Symbolist in the period before World War I. After the war he developed a unique pictorial style that mixed expressionist color and gesture, mythological and mystical allegory, and the harsh new objectivity of his portrayal of modern life throughout the Nazi reign of terror. A prolific artist in painting, drawing, and printmaking--as well as a powerful sculptor--Beckmann created mysterious images and dense tableaux of unparalleled intensity and complexity during an odyssey that took him from his native Germany to Paris, Amsterdam, St. Louis, and New York. A new examination of Beckmann's role and reputation during the first half of the 20th century has been eagerly awaited. Making use of new scholarship and previously unavailable research materials, this book sheds light on Beckmann's work and his influence on and interactions with the artists of his day. Essays include discussions of Beckmann's Frankfurt cityscapes, his pictures from Italy, his triptychs, his group portraits, and his relationship with cultural politics in the 1920s and 1930s; texts and interviews by artists Leon Golub and Ellsworth Kelly; curator Robert Storr on "The Beckmann Effect"; and artist William Kentridge on Beckmann's Death. This sumptuous volume is published on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition mounted jointly by the Tate Modern, Centre Georges Pompidou, and The Museum of Modern Art, New York. It is the first comprehensive exhibition of Beckmann's work to be seen in the United States since 1984, and the first in New York since 1964.

intelligent text and many illustrations, sadly however, none are in color. Beckmann deserves more.

5 out of 5 stars The definite Beckmann monography.......2007-04-26

This book is the catalogue for the largest Beckmann exhibition ever held, in 2003,at the Centre Pompidou, the Tate Gallery and the Moma. All the masterpieces of this great artist are illustrated and explained, following a clear chronology and putting them in the historical and social context in which they were created. High-quality texts (especially the analysis of Beckmann's influence on contemporary artists like P.Guston)make this an indispensable work. Highly recommended.

    Book Description

Internationally renowned South African artist William Kentridge creates animated movies from “drawings for projection,” charcoal renderings he alters during filming. Paralleling the political upheaval in his homeland, his works reflect the tenuous nature of memory, both personal and historical.

Published to accompany Kentridge's first retrospective exhibition in the United States and South Africa, this fascinating book offers in-depth coverage of the artist's animated films, drawings, and theater productions. Kentridge has also created 16 new, previously unpublished “artist's pages” for the book.

A wealth of colorplates, essays, and an interview exploring various facets of Kentridge's creative process, and a chronology outlining both his and his country's milestones make this book the most comprehensive examination of Kentridge's work to date.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Catalog of an Incredible Exhibition.......2002-10-13

William Kentridge is a white South African born in 1955. He is best known for animations, based on large charcoal paintings, which have as their subject the complexity of living a meaningful life in the warped society of South Africa.

Kentridge makes the films by working on the charcoal paintings, then clicking the film camera one frame at a time. He then walks back to the painting and works on it, before exposing another twenty-fifth of a second.

Kentridge is articulate and interesting and has established himself as a great artist in the tradition of Hogarth, Daumier and the German expressionists. His exhibition, which closed here in Los Angeles last week, was breathtaking. This book is the catalog of that exhibition.

    4 out of 5 stars a very interesting artist.......2002-09-18

I leave off a "star" only because viewing Kentridge's drawings can not substitute the experience of viewing his films. Indeed, looking the charcoal drawings I wonder at what stage of the sequence it is in. Is this the last step in the drawing? Looking at a drawing outside of its time base can also be a positive. I love searching the surface for smudge marks and erased hands and arms. His drawings end up being a record of movement (something that most single drawings fail to capture). For anyone who doesn't know, by the way, Kentridge animates his charcoal drawings using filmic stop motion techniques. The results are amazing. Anyone interested in drawing and painting, the birth of early film, and South African Politics: here is your artist.

      Book Description

In the course of designing his recent production of Mozart's The Magic Flute, artist and animated filmmaker William Kentridge created a mechanized theater maquette. When he saw the miniature stage's potential as sculpture, projection site, and installation, he began to imagine Black Box, the freestanding structure whose development and installation are documented here. A movement-filled, visually charged piece, it is peopled with two-dimensional mechanical figures, completed with scenic elements and lit by flickering video. A digital projector displays animated films created from Kentridge's charcoal drawings and sculptures. Kentridge considers his title term in three senses: a "black box" theater, a "chambre noire" as it relates to photography, and a "black box" flight data recorder, as used in airline disasters. The clandestine fourth reference may be to his ongoing exploration of German history and its convergence with South African history through Namibia, a former German colony that came under South African control prior to gaining its independence. Black Box evokes all that, and the joyful mechanics of pre-cinematic visual spectacles, magic lanterns, the camera obscura and the zoetrope. A unique and richly layered meditation on the act of seeing, on vision and experience, and on the nature of knowledge itself.

          Product Description

Although William Kentridge is now well known for his films, drawings, and theatre productions, he began his artistic career learning etching at the Johannesburg Art Foundation under Bill Ainslie. He spent two years teaching printmaking at this Foundation and his earliest exhibitions featured his monotypes and etchings such as the Domestic Scenes series. William Kentridge Prints is the first book to focus specifically on Kentridge's formidable print oeuvre, filling a gap in published work on the artist to date. It is also the first major publication on William Kentridge to be published in South Africa. The book includes over 180 works and presents the full range and complexity of Kentridge's printmaking, from his linocuts of the 1970s to his recent sophisticated and distinctive Thinking Aloud drypoints created while he was working on his production of Mozart's opera, The Magic Flute, which premiered in Brussels in April 2005. David Krut began publishing William Kentridge editions in the 1990s and in 1997 compiled and edited a CD-ROM on the artist, the first publication on Kentridge to address the full range and complexity of his work. Krut compiled and edited the final print list for this book and contributed the Introduction, which gives a brief history of Kentridge's projects and collaborations with printers. The publication of this book coincides with a travelling exhibition that opened at the Faulconer Gallery, Grinnell College, Iowa in late 2004 and travels to other museums in the United States through 2007. William Kentridge Prints includes a Foreword by Lesley Wright, Director of the Faulconer Gallery at Grinnell College, the Introduction for the original exhibition catalogue by Kay Wilson, Curator of the Faulconer Collection, and an essay by the award-winning poet, critic, and translator Susan Stewart, Professor of English at Princeton University. Stewart has published four books of poetry and several critical texts including The Open Studio: Essays on Art and Aesthetics (University of Chicago Press, January 2005). In addition, the book includes a series of rare personal commentaries by Kentridge that give wonderful insight into the ideas and working methods of an obsessive and highly sophisticated printmaker.

            Book Description

South African artist William Kentridge makes drawings that he erases, alters, or adds elements to, then progressively films them, thereby bringing the drawings to life. William Kentridge: WEIGHING...AND WANTINg focuses in detail on the the artist's 1998 film of the same name, and the drawings he used to make the film. WEIGHING...AND WANTINg is one of Kentridge's most personal films, and its poignancy is expressed through the intimacy of the large-scale color reproductions of the charcoal drawings. Over 80 film stills punctuate the catalogue, enabling the reader to follow the film sequence. An insightful essay on the drawings and film, and biographic information about William Kentridge completes the catalogue.

Painting on silk can be an elaborate, labor-intensive process yielding highly artistic creations, but it can also be a relatively simple craft allowing beginners to produce pleasing results. This little book follows the latter approach, demonstrating that with minimal equipment and just a tiny bit of practice, anyone can achieve these brightly hued, cheerful designs. Flowers, sea creatures, farm animals, angels, and abstract designs bedeck pillows, cards, bags, pictures, and other items, all with step-by-step instructions for transferring designs, painting the silk, and making up the finished piece, plus ideas for special effects and tips on choosing silks and paints. If silk painting interests you but complicated projects intimidate you, this is a good place to begin. --Amy Handy

                  3 out of 5 stars 10 projects for beginners.......2000-06-17

I am a little bit disapointed by this book. The section "How to paint" is too short and the explanations are not sufficient, especially for beginners : only the very easy techniques are explained (water, salt) with no step by step illustrations. However, the 10 projects are nice and easy enough to make.

                    Book Description

World War I stereoview sets remained popular for many years after the war ended. In the United States, the most commonly encountered World War I stereographs were produced by four companies: Keystone View Company, Underwood & Underwood, and W.E. Troutman of this country, and Realistic Travels of England. Of those four, Keystone was the largest and in business the longest time. It produced over 800 war stereographs, most a part of one or more of the seven principle war sets. The Great War Through Keystone Stereographs describes these sets from the first one in 1915 to the last one in 1932. It includes photos of over 120 stereoviews and complete title lists for each set.

While Keystone stereoviews are the most common in this country, not all Keystone cards are common. . The Great War Through Keystone Stereographs provides for the first time a sound basis for estimating their market value. Anyone who looks at Keystone war stereographs card on eBay will find that dealers and collectors alike betray considerable ignorance of their scarcity, with common cards being offered (and purchased) at $25.00 and rare cards and sets going for a song. As we approach the centennial of the Great War, stereocards about it are likely to become increasingly popular. The collector who owns this book will avoid overpaying and will be able to find bargains.

. The Great War Through Keystone Stereographs is far more than a catalog. The chapters on each set offer serious students of the war and photography insight into Keystone's editorial decisions as they continually tried to improve the quality of their coverage of the Great War. It also establishes previous unknown links among producers of stereographs of the period and makes sense of the baffling number patterns apparent in any group of cards. It is an indispensable a reference to historians and dealers.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Great Collector's Resource.......2007-05-06

Unlike the first reviewer, I bought this book for what it is, a resource for understanding Keystone World War One stereoviews. If you're looking for a picture book of WWI, I agree, this ain't it. The late Tex Treadwell compiled a list of over 1000 WWI stereoviews issued by Keystone View Company. No boxed set ever exceeded 400 views. The author of this book has managed to figure out which ones went with which boxed set, the year that they got included & when various views got deleted. In many instances the origin (source) of the view has been figured out. Personally, I am impressed with the author's efforts and like the book. If you collect World War One stereoviews this book is a must.

1 out of 5 stars Not a Collection of Stereo Views.......2007-04-04

This is a collector's guide to Keystone stereo views of World War I--namely lists and information on the views available. If you actively collect this genre, this is a great guide. But if you're looking for a book of photographs (stereo or mono) of the Great War--forget it, you'll be (like me) very disappointed.
