Book Description
From Emmy Award-winning-producer Paul Dini and acclaimed designer Chip Kidd comes Batman Animated, the behind-the-scenes story of the hit show that revolutionized television animation and brought a stunning new look to the legendary Caped Crusader. Since its premiere in September 1992, Batman: The Animated Series has been acclaimed by enthusiastic viewers and longtime fans of the Batman character as the defining image of the Dark Knight onscreen.
Now readers are offered an inside look into the creation of the series. Granted unprecedented access to the archives of the Warner Bros. Animation Studio, Chip Kidd has combined breathtaking photographs by Award-winning photographer Geoff Spear and fashioned an imaginative layout of never-before-published preproduction and finished artwork that echoes the boldness of producer-designer Bruce Timm's powerful TV show.
Paul Dini's text offers entertaining and informative commentary on the series history, development, and continuing production. It includes glimpses into the making of the Batman animated features Mask of the Phantasm and SubZero, and a sneak peek into the future projects.
Featuring a detailed episode guide, comments from the series creators and voice actors, and an introduction by Bruce Timm, Batman Animated is a must-have for Batman fans young and old.

Batman Animated.......2007-08-09
A very good buy, i was waiting to have this book in my hands for a long time and i finally have it, it's just excellent for those who love the batman animated series and animation. It has a lot of tips and information "behind the scenes" of the series.
very recomendated, the only bad thing is that it was the only book this kind, i'm still waiting for something similar but of justice league and batman beyond.
Must-Have for the B:TAS Fan!.......2007-06-04
"Batman: The Animated Series" was one of the most revolutionary and influential cartoons ever created. This book, written by B:TAS writer/producer Paul Dini, is an essential look into the creation and phenomenon of the series. While a little slim on actual reading, what is there gives you that most coveted "behind-the-scenes" info on what it took to make "Batman". (For another perspective on the show's creation, check out the "Modern Masters: Bruce Timm" interview book.)
The real meat of the book lies in its visuals: photos, line art, animation cels, background keys, licensed toys, etc. The layout of these materials seems a bit haphazard (for being done by the "design-god" Chip Kidd), with captions sometimes hard to correlate with their images and numerous fold-out pages (which I really don't care for). However, the sheer number and quality of images is amazing, and some of the full-page renderings of production key art is breath-taking. I question some of the image choices in the character-design section, particularly the villians. But, again, there's a lot of ground to cover here and the quality and quantity of pictures is overwhelming.
The book was published before Batman Beyond and Justice League, so the ending comments might seem a little off. Still as a retrospective on the "B:TAS", you can't ask for much more. This would have been a 5 star review, if only there'd been a little more reading and a bit less visual confusion.
Bottom line: Love "Batman: The Animated Series"? Buy this book.
A great book for a great animated series.......2006-03-09
Who best to write a book about this justifiably award-winning animated series than one of the series writer/producers--Paul Dini (who wrote one of my favorite episodes--"Heart of Ice")? And with graphic designer Chip Kidd involved, you have a book that looks great on the coffee table. The best word I can use to describe this book is "thorough." It contains superlative art in full color, storyboards, character designs, in-house memos, licensed products, an episode guide from the animated series, plus great information on why the series was created, why the censors said no to certain aspects, as well as facts about the movies based on the series (SUBZERO, MASK OF THE PHANTASM). My only complaint is that the book isn't longer. But that's not the authors' fault. They put together such a great book, you'll want as much insight into the creation of this series as you can get (like a good DVD provides). And these guys deliver! This is a great "backstage" look for fans of the series.
The Greatest Book Companion to Any Series.......2005-04-07
I really was blown away by how meticulously put-together this book was. Besides the animation being great, this documentive source included everything from the episode guide title cards, merchandise (including ice cream and bubblegum cards), storyboards, character concepts, and a hell of a lot more! It also includes a great photo of Bruce Timm's drawing desk- complete with all the references he uses such as G.I. Joes & knick knacks. Color photos are adorned throughout, but besides that, there are also great stories of what the animation department went through with the head leaders of Warner Bros. There is even a charicature drawing that includes everything that the animators were restricted to draw (a nude, smoking Catwoman, a boozin' Joker, Batman strangling his foe, etc- it's really a treat!)
Even if you've had the misfortunate of not being familiar with this cartoon series, owning this book will make you realize how much effort is needed to create something this vast, and how much more we need to practice to ever reach this level!
Best of its type.......2004-01-23
The best compendium of modern TV animation layout and design currently available. These artists revolutionized TV animation, and this book is something that everyone interested in the field must have. Strong work, and very good presentation here, especially the storyboard sequences. Good for artists as a learning aid, or as entertainment for fans of the show, whatever age. Clear, uncluttered presentation from the Warners studio archives. A good history of the show, and a great lesson in how to develop an animated project. You should have this sense of design based on strength, simplicity, drama and clarity.

good for fans.......2006-06-10
I love Batman the Animated Series. When I heard of this book, I immeadietly bought it. You'll data on every character from the series and what episodes they first appeared in. Some of the pictures are photo shots from the series. Great for Batman fans.
batman guide.......2006-03-19
my three year old son loves this book he wants to know who all the characters are and he loves to tell them back to you. this book has been wonderful!!
Good for kids.......2004-07-13
I grew up watching this series, and fell in love with Batman because of it. The moment I saw a preview of the pages for Nightwing and Harley Quinn (my favorite characters) I rushed to order this. However, I was a bit disappointed. I'm used to the "Ultimate Guide to ---" Books and was expecting this book to be just as detailed. It is very thin, and not very specific. This book is great for people and kids who know very little about the series and want to get acquainted. For true fans, its not even necessary. Only major characters are covered. I would have been more impressed if a character like Rupert Thorne's accomplice Candace would have gotten a page. I don't see why not, she appeared in multiple episodes. However, in this book, Rupert himself only get a paragraph on the "Other Villians" page. An episode guide would have also been nice. The most you get here is a list of where each major character first appeared. I hope a more detailed book will appear in the future.

Fourth in series does Fine .......2004-09-17
The third of fourth in DK's junior guidebooks to the WB's animated series follows the similar format as the previous ones. Like the others, Mr. Beatty does a fine job in picking the illustrations from the comic book stories from the programs, but a few more captions from the actual show would have been appreciated.
Still, it's fun and colorful. And considering that sometimes the regular full priced guidebooks can have some content that some adults might object to, this text is eye-catching and can introduce the younger readers to the less complicated animated series history.
I do wish the book had a few more pages to explain things a bit more, but it's great for what it is.
Though the Batman Beyond series isn't currently being shown on cable, but can be caught on DVD, this guidebook is a great way for the kids to introduce themselves into the world of Batman Beyond.

Book Description
This hardcover edition is limited to 400, each signed and numbered by the author.
The earliest railroads in Dutchess County were the north-south routes that served New York City, Albany, and Montreal. These routes were relatively stable and successful. With that success as an incentive, an east-west railroad was chartered and built. The first eight years of east-west railroad operations in Dutchess County saw turmoil, conflict, and multiple financial failures.
The railroad tracks that ran from Dutchess Junction and Matteawan (Beacon) through Hopewell and Millbrook to Millerton and to Connecticut at State Line had several different names in their first few years of existence. Out of that chaos grew the Newburgh, Dutchess & Connecticut Railroad, the subject of a new book by Bernard Rudberg of Wappingers Falls published by Purple Mountain Press of Fleischmanns, NY.
The ND&C Railroad under the leadership of John Schultze and Charles Kimball established an operation that survived through good times and bad for over twenty-five years until it was absorbed into the Central New England Railway later becoming part of the New Haven Railroad. Still later, eleven miles of the old ND&C line became part of the ill-fated Penn Central, next Conrail, then the Housatonic Railroad, and currently Metro North.
Early sections of Twenty-five Years on the ND&C: A History of the Newburgh, Dutchess & Connecticut Railroad set the stage for the entrance of the new line. The heart of the book is the twenty-five years of ND&C operation from 1879 to 1904. Recently discovered ND&C record books now in the possession of the Beacon Historical Society (33,000 pages in 48 volumes) are a window into the everyday events and problems of running a railroad in the late 1800s. This remarkable resource contains everything from compensating farmers for cattle run over by trains to dealing with the great blizzard of March 1888, as well as ordering locomotive repair parts or reporting the office washroom drain is clogged again. After spending more than a year of spare time reading the books, the author came to think of Schultze and Kimball as old friends even though both have been gone for over 100 years.
The author conveys the human side of the struggle to build a successful business and preserves the contributions that Schultze, Kimball, and the railroads made to the world we live in today.

Book Description
When giant bones are found on a farm in New York State in 1801, no one knows what sort of creature they came from. Are they the fossilized bones of an elephant or of a mammoth, the huge animal that has recently been unearthed in northern Russia? Or do they come from a different animal entirely? There's only one way to find out--dig up and assemble a complete skeleton of the creature. And Charles Willson Peale is just the man to take on the job.
At the age of sixty, Peale has already made his mark as a portrait painter and scientist, as well as the founder of the first natural history museum in the United States. If he can put on display a skeleton of the mysterious creature, people will flock in even greater numbers to his Philadelphia museum. The skeleton may also help to prove a controversial new theory: that some animals that once roamed the Earth have become extinct.
As he searches for more bones, Peale must dig at several different sites. He is confronted by flooding, threats of cave-ins, and oppressive heat but persists in his quest. What he eventually finds confirms the existence of a previously unknown animal -- the mastodon It also provides solid evidence not only that some animals have become extinct, but also that the Earth is far older than anyone ever imagined.
Based on Charles Willson Peale's own diaries and journals, The Mystery of the Mammoth Bones is a gripping scientific thriller.

MASTODON FIND 2000.......2000-03-13
I FOUND THIS BOOK WHILE RESEARCHING OUR OWN MASTODON FIND NOT MORE THAN 75 MILES NORTH OF THE SITE OF THE FIND RECOUNTED IN THIS WONDERFULLY WRITTEN STORY. I HAVE PRESENTED MY RESEARCH TO VARIOUS SCHOOL GROUPS IN OUR AREA AND HAVE ALSO DONATED COPIES OF THIS BOOK TO THE VARIOUS SCHOOL LIBRARIES. WHILE THE BOOK IS WRITTEN FOR CHILDREN, I DID NOT FIND IT BORING. I ACTUALLY FOUND IT VERY INTERESTING AND LEARNED ALOT MORE FROM IT. I WAS AMAZED BY THE SIMILARITIES OF THE ORIGINAL FIND WHICH TOOK PLACE IN THE EARLY 1900'S AND OUR RECENT FIND. ALTHOUGH OUR TECHNOLOGY IS MUCH MORE ADVANCED, THE SITE IN WHICH WE FOUND OUR MASTODON, IS STRIKINGLY SIMILAR. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN THIS SUBJECT.
Book Description
This isn't an ordinary Civil War tale. It is the all-true but little-known story of Adam "Stovepipe" Johnson-Kentucky legend, Texas hero, and Confederate cavalry officer-who boldly led the first Confederate raid across the Mason-Dixon Line to capture the thriving river-port community of Newburgh, Indiana, during the American Civil War. Not a shot was fired.
With the politically divided landscape of Civil War Kentucky and the steamboat economy of the Ohio River as its backdrop, this is the historically accurate account of surprise nocturnal strikes, opportunistic military occupations, and a swashbuckling Rebel icon's daring daylight invasion into the Northern homeland that sealed the fate of western Kentucky for the remainder of the war.
Vivid, thorough, and painstakingly researched, Thunder from a Clear Sky documents five critical weeks of 1862 Civil War history and shares the untold tale of one man's immeasurable impact on a nation at war.
Customer Reviews:
A Forgotten Gem Shines Again.......2007-03-06
Adam Johnson's Confederate Raid on Newburgh, Indiana, was a little-known footnote to history even in the communities where the story unfolded. Most who knew about the raid knew only about Johnson's use of a phony cannon battery to deceive the Indiana homeguard into giving up the town. Thunder From a Clear Sky is the equivalent of a backstage pass into the workings and reasons behind the raid. Told in a story-telling style, this book is a wonderful example of what is possible when a talented researcher and writer dusts off a forgotten gem. The book has single-handedly sparked a revival of interest into Adam Johnson's amazing life story.
A welcome contribution to Civil War and military history shelves........2007-01-06
Written by Ray Mulesky, Thunder From a Clear Sky is the breathtaking true story of Confederate cavalry officer Adam "Stovepipe" Johnson, who led the first Confederate raid across the Mason-Dixon Line to seize the river-port community of Newburgh, Indiana during the American Civil War. Not a shot was fired. A highly accessible true story of how an ordinary man proved capable of a military master stroke, and the fallout thereafter when the territory he claimed was retaken by Union troops. A welcome contribution to Civil War and military history shelves.
A nice read.......2006-10-12
This book is a fascinating story. The author puts you into the story. You can almost smell the gunpowder.
History comes alive!.......2006-09-01
Although I'm only mildly interested in historical books, I truly enjoyed reading this book. The book's ability to engage my interest was through taking a true story with real people from an ordinary place and telling the story of how they acted and what happened when the history altering civil war directly touches their lives through one man's actions. Very thought provoking! The writing so skillfully weaves details from historical research with the people involved in this event that it is both enjoyable and informative. Great book!
Thunder From a Clear Sky: Stovepipe Johnson's Confederate Raid on Newburgh, Indiana by Raymond Mulesky.......2005-10-24
I have read a lot of books regarding the Civil War. Being a history buff, I'm always looking for more. Living in Southern Indiana made this book appealing because it is local history. More interesting is that it takes place basically on "the line" between the north and south. With only the river separating the strong beliefs on both sides of the War, the story is true for so many borderline areas. Ray writes in a way that makes the reader believe they are actually witnessing the raid and I was able to relate easily to the feelings that the characters were feeling. When he described the chaos in Newburgh and the clear conflicts with the inhabitants, it was very easy to get wrapped up in it all. He also takes the time to give a full narative to the people in the story so that the reader understands throughout how they fit into the book. It is a very well researched historical account of the struggles of the people during that time. As someone who constantly has a non-fiction book in progress, I highly recommend it.

Newburgh: The Heart of the City focuses on one of the widest thoroughfares in the Northeast, Broadway, the main street in Newburgh, measuring one hundred thirty-two feet across. Known as "the heart of the city," Broadway was the activity center in the twentieth century. It was lined with government offices, commercial and business enterprises, schools, churches, restaurants, firehouses, farms, fortune-tellers, and entertainment and recreational establishments. Broadway was not only the street of everyman but also the street of presidents, playing host to both Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy.

Book Description
The Great Unknown tells, in words and pictures, the story of one of the most important turning points in the study of natural history. Two hundred years ago, Charles Willson Peale, founder of America's foremost natural history museum, heard that a number of large bones were found buried in a farm field in upstate New York. He journeyed there and, with great effort, excavated and eventually assembled the bones into an almost complete fossil skeleton, only the second in the world. It was the first skeleton ever assembled of what we now call a mastodon. The imposing mastadon skeleton was soon put on display in Peale's museum in Philadelphia. People came from all over to see the huge creature. Not only did Peale's curiosity and determination pave the way for future paleontologists, his discovery of the mastodon was pivotal in convincing the public of the reality of extinction.

Great Unknown.......2007-09-19
This book has more pictures than written content. It would be okay for an eight year old. Even at a discount,as over priced.

Customer Reviews:
Morse is amazing!.......2003-04-03
This is the third book in the Soulwind series by master illustrator Scott Morse.
In this volume, we again find ourselves with Nick, our protagonist with the Soulwind sword.
Morse's art is just phenomenal, especially his calligraphy style. He is, without hyperbole, one of the greatest artists working in the medium.
Each volume can be read independently, but all five are great!
