Customer Reviews:
The human body is nothing more than irregular cylinders, cubes and other shapes. .......2006-08-15
I would recommend this book after you have taken a basic drawing class. First you must master the ability to see all around you as basic shapes. After you have completed that task, this book is the next logical step.
From the begininng, this book offers different ways of observing the human body. Nothing much is needed to begin drawing the human body than a pencil and paper, this book will lead the way. However, for those advanced (or really motivated beginners) this book offers a list of other items to purchase.
Each part of the body (except for the feet!) is nicely described in the form of observation and basic shapes. Once you've learned that the human torso is nothing more than a irregularly shaped egg, the rest becomes easy.

Feeling ambivalent about this one, but here's why: ..........2004-06-29
I looked over this book very carefully. At first I thought Greg Albert was the author. [I just finished SLAMMING Greg Albert for a different but poorly authored text elsewhere on Amazon!] But looking carefully, the cover states that Greg Albert is only the "editor" of this book, published by NORTH LIGHT.
There was something disturbingly familiar about the illustrations which are excellent...and then I realized, that North Light was the same publisher for WALT REED's "THE FIGURE", published in 1976, and that what North Light Publishers have done is invite GREG ALBERT to do a revision and update of WALT REED's "The Figure" with some new illustrations added, and slapping on an entirely new title. Well...okay...
This may give me an unpleasant feeling concerning authorship, but I did give Walt Reed's text a FIVE STAR rating on Amazon.com, and this has new illustrations added in.
This is an excellent book on beginner drawing, full of Walt Reed's original BLOCK FIGURES and human puppets. NORTH LIGHT PUBLISHERS was wise to update and revise the current text and continue to polish it.
I was disappointed.......2004-01-08
I had high expectations for this book, thought it would teach me the correct way to render my sketchings of people better... I really think the sketches in the book could have been better, I thought it looked a little amateurish. Although the author covers many things and tries his hardest to convey what needs to be done, I think the photo lacks more instructions and step-by-step advice.
For instance: he will start with a semi outline of a body and just show you how to fill it in... it wasn't until later in the book he actually tries to show you porportions.
And in the beginning, he has you starting off my scribbling. Maybe that worked for others, but not for me.
I am starting a college drawing course in about 9 days and have been practicing my techniques from different books, but this is one book I'd rather leave on the shelf.
Basic Figure Drawing Techniques(North light Painting).......2000-09-17
An excellent choice, for beginning artists. This book includes many essential tools in figure drawing; such as the underlying bases of the figures, many different distinct poses, and also a good introduction to anatomy from an artistic view, yet still easily understandable by beginners. Within, this book you will find many introductory techniques that start from scribble and transform into to beautiful life forms as well as, well-written passages thoroughly explaining everything every step of the way. Therefore, if your interested in figure drawing and have never before even picked up a pencile;this book is your best choice!
Book Description
The foundation to drawing a character is the penciled under-drawing. An under-drawing that has somehow gone astray, once penned, ultimately results in artwork that just will not pull together or lacks balance. This volume explains in thorough detail how to handle the pencil, before the pen ever touches the drawing. Using actual examples of how a well or poorly penciled under-drawing can affect the final work, this book passes along many helpful pointers. Use this book to learn the absolute basics of penciled artwork, manga-style!

A good introduction to the basics of Manga art style ! .......2007-08-15
I Got my copy of this book thru amazon,And was really disapointed because they kept delaying the shipping date and had to wait over 2 weeks until it actually got shipped. However the book it-self offers quite alot of potential for learning to design and draw your own Manga charecters it covers many topics on both the realistic and the manga style such as the design of the eyes/Nose/Mouth , Also it was very helpful when it came to Head drawing from all angles in addition to that it also covers drawing the human figure . The only reason why i gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because all the charecters in the book look like from some 80's anime . And i am not that much into that style i love Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's style more it's modern and realistic .
This book is awesome!.......2007-03-17
This book has really helped me figure out how to draw manga step-by-step. I got it for my birthday and I'm always using it. It's got some really great stuff in it, so I would recommend it to anyone who has *some* experience.
It's good, but needs more........2007-02-14
This book had good pictures and examples to help a person draw manga and it's characters, but buy a different book if you are a beginner. This book wasn't very helpful to me, but if you are a good artist already and hope to be reminded to how to draw a few things like the head and body of manga characters, then get this book.
But, I don't really recommend this book because it needs much more pages and helpful pointers.
Super Kawaii book!.......2007-01-04
I knew this book should join the rest of my how to draw arsenal when I first laid my eyes on it! This book is sooo helpful in character drawing, it gives you the run down on different kinds of eyes, hair styles, faces, nose, ears, and the body. Another good thing about this book is that it shows you how the hair should be placed on the head, and how it flows when you are doing a certain action. This book also covers the types of pencils and erasers used for under drawings, and examples of the thickness of each pencil. It also has a small section of kawaii chibi characters! Aww! I would definitely recommend this book for those who want to start off drawing manga. Another plus is that the book doesn't contain any nudity at all. Perfect for those who are offended by nudity.
don't have a clue how to draw manga this is the book you should start with.......2006-02-28
Fantastic, I would say this is the first book anyone interested in drawing manga should buy. I have other manga books, but this one is the best.
Book Description
The human body is one of the most intriguing subjects in the world of art, but its subtle curves and shapes can be a challenge for beginning artists. Basic Anatomy and Figure Drawing provides artists with clear and helpful information about the skeletal and muscular structures and how to apply this knowledge to create accurate renderings of the human form. The detailed, 32-page instruction book introduces fundamental drawing techniques--from holding the pencil to creating realistic textures and shading--making it a wonderful resource for beginning artists.

This is a great book for any artist.... The experience of having a model to draw from for as long as you like is an invaluable tool for capturing detail and tones. the fact that the book is in japanese is not a problem at all because it is almost all pictures.

Halfway decent reference.......1999-05-18
The poses are somewhat static and too mundane. I realize that, for the successful artist, being able to capture the mundane along with the fantastic and fascinating is essential, but overall, this book was disappointing.
I highly recommend the Elte Shuppan "Pose File" series over this line.

Inspired by a legend of the Karuk people, the story of how Coyote captures fire and how Eagle, Cougar, Fox, Bear and others work together to help is a dramatic tale of bravery and cooperation.
Customer Reviews:
To read aloud.......2003-07-11
My highest recommendation on this book is due to the fact that my five-year-old grandson loves the book and asks me to read it over and over to him. The illustrations are very nice and colorful, the book is done with wit and humor and is a fun read.
Beautiful illustrations, good story.......2003-01-19
I'm fond of stories from Native American cultures that attempt to explain the facts of the world. In this story, we learn how Yellow Jackets got their black striping and why fire comes from wood. Coyote is sweet and knowlegable; less of a trickster than he often is, and more caring of the animal community than usual.
The illustrations are beautiful and remind me of Jan Brett's. They have good detail and personalities on the animals faces. My favorite aspect of each animal though, was the token clothing or jewelry. Coyote wears a hat, eagle wears a necklace, fox has earrings. None of the jewelry are blatent but are subtle and understated, appearing as though the animals are comfortable in their adornments.
excellent and authentic.......2002-12-13
I found this book by accident in a local bookstore, and was astounded by the beautiful illustrations, as well as impressed by the afterword by a well-respected Karuk individual. The story of the race will captivate younger children, while the pictures will keep their parents entranced.

Really good tale --.......2002-01-09
This is a story telling how the "animal people" long ago had no fire, and how they got it. Coyote figures prominently in the story, as the group's leader, but each animal plays a specific role. While i wouldn't recommend this story as an exemplary book, it nevertheless captivated my kindergarten ESL classes through repeated readings. Solely on the strength of the story and their interest in hearing it told, i was able to slowly glide them from a part Chinese-part English initial reading into a total English telling of the story, over a period of a couple of weeks.
We acted out the story as a class for graduation, and the kids had a happy and thrilling time putting it all together. Social cooperation and the ethics of possession are all essential to the tale, which basically consists of the Animal People stealing fire from the recalcitrantly greedy Yellow-jacket sisters. In the end, though, the Willow captures the fire and holds it fast, but thanks to Grandfather Coyote's ingenuity the animal people learn how to coax fire out from the wood.
The pictures are colorful and vibrant, and quite expressive of the story; the text is weak in some places, but never fails to convey the drive of the plot. With the proper performance, this book becomes a lively chase with a happy ending.
A Great Tale.......2000-03-27
The Fire Race is a wonderful tale. It has great illustrations and the different characters really come to life. The whole story is full of action. It's a great tale about how we got fire.
Excellent illustrations and engaging story.......1998-12-03
A beautifully illustrated book. The story involves lots of "wild" animals that even a little 2 year old will enjoy this tale. It is similar to the "Very Busy Spider" in its animals helping each other. All my kids love this tale from the 8 year old to the 1 1/2 year old.
