Artist's Photo Reference:Flowers.......2007-08-07
This book is excellent for anyone painting flowers as the pictures are brilliant for reference.
More flowers, please.......2006-11-10
I liked the book. It has lots of useful photos, and the author, being an artist himself, designed the book with the artist in mind, which I found wonderful. The only reason I did not give it a "perfect" score, is because I think there are some very common flowers "missing", such as hollyhocks, violets and a few others. But considering that there are hundreds of flowers, it is understandable that these flowers are not there.
Great tool as a design reference.......2000-06-24
At first glance, I was disappointed. I expected the photos to be somewhat more artistic. However, after sitting down and read it, the photos are very detailed, and that's why I wanted to order this book in the first place. It contains several photos in a page that shows the different views of a flower: close up of pedals, open & close etc - which I find very useful as a design reference. However, I must say I am not very impressed with the demonstration of the teaching, how to paint or photograph a flower. I think if the author is going to enclose this part in his book, it should be in detail, or else better off just leave it.
Great book, A must-have reference for any flower artist.......2000-05-02
If you love to draw or paint flowers you will love this book. It's really nice reference book for those who don't have a garden with dozens of flowers year round to go pick or photograph when they want to create their next masterpiece.
The book contains over 500 clear quality photos. There are about 50 different flowers in all. Each is show in several different perspectives from up close petals, to stems, in large bunches and even inside the flowers.
As a bonus there are five beautiful step-by-step demonstrations on how to draw the flowers as well. The examples include Chrysanthemums in acrylic, Dahlias in pastel, Sunflowers & Orchids in colored pencil & Pansies in watercolor.
Beautifully detailed photos of flowers, leaves & buds.......1999-03-09
Gary Green has created a dream book for artists who specialize in flowers. Using many different angles and showing all stages of growth, he has compiled a fabulous reference for those of us who are unable to keep flowers on hand. My only question is, "When will he come out with his next book?"

Great CD, so-so book.......2007-08-23
The CD that comes with this book is great. It has lots of hi-res photos, organized by category. I was less impressed with the example projects in the book. Load these photos into Photoshop, and go crazy!

Artist's Photo Reference:Landscapes.......2007-06-27
This is a wonderful reference book and I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in landscape painting or photography.
Wonderful.......2004-01-21
I think this reference book is absolutely wonderful. The author has written permission to photocopy out of the book and tips on how to make a collection of pictures into one. I also just love the variety that it comes with. I was saddened that there was no rain, but everything else widely overcomes it. If your looking for a book full of pictures, this is the one to get!!
More is Less.......2003-07-08
A photo reference should of course contain plenty of photos, but here there may be too many, or maybe it's that they're crammed four or five to a page. I've worked with small print photos of my own as a reference and it's no bother ( I can enlarge them if I need to), but when a smallish image is one of a group on that same page, well...it's just too crowded.
Perhaps less would be more.
Maybe it's my merely-intermediate stature, but I'd rather a larger format, such as a volume called "America" (or "American Landscapes") that I found at the library, with one or two great photos to a page.
"Artist's Photo Reference: Landscapes" is helpfully organized into categories and sections within those categories, and offers a few demos. That's a good thing.
I may not unload this book, but I'll more likely hit the library for some general photography books.
Good Reference Book For The Studio.......2002-02-17
This is a really good reference book for landscapes. I use it often when I need a good outdoor scene for a painting. I really like to use the landscapes that depict sunset/sunrise. This book has most definitely been the most used art reference book in my studio.
My only complaint is that I wish he had incorporated scenes that invoke Alaska. Other than the absence of glaciers this is a pretty good book. I hope if there is a second edition that he remembers to include glaciers and frozen ponds. Afterall, the Alaskan landscape is a part of America too.
Wide variety but too flat.......2002-01-01
Most of the photographs are too bland to use. Too much sun, too many similar photographs, not enough mood photographs. Where are the rainy days, why are there so few foggy pictures, why no gardens? I can photograph pictures like these. What I wanted from this book are photographs I can't shoot. Windy days, mountain towns. I am using it, but it's hard to find a good subject and combine it with others, they are so similar.

To Albania? In a Model T?.......2000-02-02
I admit to a bias. Helen Dore Boylston was a cousin of my grandfather's and I've been feeling terribly cheated since I read this book because I never met her. The story is remarkable. Two young women decide to drive from Albania to Paris. Their adventures are not, perhaps, quite as colorful as one might hope, but their daring and imagination in deciding upon such an voyage make your realize that Laura Ingalls Wilder really raised one heck of a brave and free daughter. I'd recommend it to anyone who's read the Little House Books or any of Helen Dore Boylston's books about Sue Barton.
a great find, if you can find it........2000-01-11
Rose Wilder Lane- Laura Ingalls Wilder's daughter- and Helen Dore Boyleston- author of the Sue Barton - were friends and traveled by car from Paris to Albania during the 1920's. This book is basically excerpts from their diaries and provides some wonderful insight into their lives and is great just because it is surprising in the way that people you never imagined were connected are.
Book Description
In 1996 a mass grave believed to be from the Battle of Towton was discovered by chance. This provided the opportunity for the first archaeological excavation of a mass grave from an English battlefield and was the catalyst for a multi-disciplinary research project, beginning with the excavation of the grave, and then a study of the skeletal remains, the battlefield landscape, the historical evidence and contemporary arms and armour. The discoveries were dramatic and moving; the individuals had clearly suffered traumatic deaths and subsequent research highlighted the often multiple wounds each individual had received before and, in some cases after they had died. The exciting forensic work was documented in the British Channel 4 programme "Secrets of the Dead". An important and controversial question that emerged was whether the soldiers had been killed in battle, or executed as prisoners in its aftermath. This volume publishes the excavation reports and subsequent research, revealing much information about how and in what circumstances the men died and the fighting techniques, weapons and armour employed. Also discussed are the wider implications of the discovery, both in terms of increasing our understanding of what happened at Towton, and what it contributes to our knowledge of Medieval warfare.

There never was any such thing as chivalry anyway!!!.......2007-05-23
Knights on "shining white horseS",fighting for their maidens and their God-nope--efficient highly trained killing machines at hire to the highest bidder and will switch allegiance from one side to the other at the drop of a hat or wave of a banner. This book really brings home the savagery of the Wars of the Roses and is a great archaeological compliment to the study of this period which Shakespeare so eloquently covered in his histories.Politics was never a pretty game and the gruesome finds here just had to be told. One skeleton shows wounds to the head where he was turning his head in order to avoid the numerous chopping of a "muscle bound" knight.Seems those knights probably had a weight set and continually practiced the martial arts in those dreary castles during the winter and didn't just wait around depressed waiting for spring to come to indulge the "pinings of love"!As a matter of fact they liked to campaign during the winter, never one to turn down a good days wage to the highest bidder!!! Chop-Chop!!By the way the guy on the front cover was a victim of a warhammer.A person could argue that perhaps it was a trepanation to relieve a headache,if they want to be in denial though.
Awesome.......2007-02-28
I have had a chance to see the book , it was borrowed from a different Universities Library. I am an undergraduatwe at the University Of Akron, I ordered the book in August of last year and was told it would take six weeks to arrive. I ordered it with a deal that Amazon had with it and the armor of Wisby, It was of a similar situation concerning a mass grave discovered in the 1930,s I received that one right away and can whole heartedley recommend it. I origionaly ordered it for a class I had last semester in Medieval Archaeology. I passed the class but not with Blood Red Roses, it was duwe in October of last year. I am sorry to report that regardless of contacting Amazon, Im am told that the order no longer exists. I am also sorry to state that as a result of this, I am recommending that Amazon not be contacted with orders for Books.
Towton Grave Study - "A" For Effort.......2004-01-14
There are few authoritative works in print that add significantly to our knowledge of how people fought and died during medieval warefare. Blood Red Roses attempts to do so.
I was somewhat put off by the cover illustration of a skull with a big square hole in the side of it. This made me fear that this book was not likely to contain any "real science". In my opinion, serious books don't need to convey their content with gruesome photographs designed to capture "the publics" attention.
This book is a compilation of contributions from people who worked on the site, and/or are "experts" of varying degree in associated fields of study. The benefit of this is that you get different perspectives on the subject. The negative part of this is that all of the authors started out their chapters with very repetitive introductory material. I kept thinking, "gee, this is the same thing I read in the last chapter". What was the editor thinking?
The material presented was, in scope, remarkable. The editors picked a big nut to chew, and their attempt to relate the physical findings to a wider historical, archaeological and social perspective is to be commended.
The actual material presented varied in quality.
Part I, covers the site discovery, some historical background to the battle, excavation technique and the finds themselves. I thought this was by and large, well presented. Some of the authors convinced me they were good thinkers and writers. It was a little disconcerting to see so many footnotes referencing other works by the contributors to this one (they all referenced each other! - usually notes refer to definitive works by acknowledged authorities in the field - which these folks are not, except maybe in the "science" of phrenology).
Part II is the best. It covers the analysis of the human remains. Expertly presented in my opinion. There is even a handy anatomy chart in the appendices for you folks who never bothered to learn anatomy. What I like best about this section is that the author is content to relate what the bones revealed. Other writers in this book were willing to reach beyond what was evident.
Part III is the weakest part of the book. This section deals with arms and armor of the period, and speculation concerning combat techniques. Nice background info, including the bit about how the author has "shot arrows into the air during a snowstorm at night" to verify that arrows are hard to see in flight. There were no weapons found in the grave pit, but this didn't stop the authors from speculating about whether a hole in a skull was made with a pike or a hammer. There was also repetitive speculation as to why these soldiers had head wounds - why weren't they wearing helmets?!!! All the contemporary art shows combatants wearing helmets! Some serious reaching going on here. It's okay, I think to say, "I don't know" from time to time.
Part IV wraps everything up by wondering what it all means. They attempt to discern much from the bones exhumed from the grave. To
a large extent they are successful, although I felt they pushed a little too hard to reach some conclusions.
The appendices are excellent! Case studies, lots of detail data, good reference material.
In conclusion: These folks did a LOT of work putting this book together. It is unique as far as I know in it's attempt to nest a grave exhumation into a wider, more meaningful dissertation.
The line art (illustrations) are really good - the photographs were well chosen and big enough to see detail. Oxbow Books put this out on good white paper. This book is a keeper.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in military history, wound ballistics, or archeology. The good parts are really good, and the not so good parts are still better than some other published works.
I LOVE THIS BOOK!.......2001-10-20
I just recived the book today and I HIGHLY recommend it! :) It covers every ascept of the amazing find, from the site, to armor and weapons, to where my intrest lies, the skeletal finds. The case studies are very intresting! :) If you have no idea where a Sacrum is or what Spina bifida occulta is, they cover that in the back of the book. Great for anybody intrested in medieval archealogoy or physical anthropology.

Book Description
A timely book about history's first desperate efforts to conquer the spotted beast of smallpox.
What is it like to be caught in the terror and chaos of a smallpox epidemic when you and those you love are unprotected? What is it like to get smallpox, or to watch your children battle the disease?
The Speckled Monster tells the dramatic story-both historical and timely-of two parents who dared to fight back against the disease. After barely surviving the agony of smallpox themselves, they both flouted eighteenth-century European medical tradition by borrowing folk knowledge from African slaves and eastern women in frantic bids to protect their children. From their heroic struggles stem the modern science of immunology as well as the vaccinations that remain our only hope should the disease ever be unleashed again.
Jennifer Lee Carrell transports readers back to the early eighteenth century to tell the tales of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu and Dr. Zabdiel Boylston: two iconoclastic figures who helped save the cities of London and Boston from the deadliest disease mankind has known.

Couldn't put it down.......2006-04-17
Maybe it's because I have a degree in both history and English, but this book suited my taste perfectly, and I was surprised at the negative reviews. I picked up the book and finished it in two days because I couldn't put it down. Ms. Carrell has made the tale read like a historical whodunit. I read her chapter, then her endnotes. If you like historical fiction and you also like historical nonfiction, I think you would enjoy this book.
medicine vs politics.......2006-03-10
Not since Laurie Garret's THE COMING PLAGUE have I enjoyed a book more. The detail of the research is tremendous and the story it tells-- of a medical breakthrough for the western world despite politics, racism and ignorance is fascinating. It is so easy to lose sight of the true terror caused by this disease. Carrell's work brings it to life.
Too Much Fluff.......2006-02-04
Jennifer Carrell is a gifted writer, but she misjudged the approach to rendering what should have been a fascinating topic. The book should have been 100 pages shorter. I got halfway through and gave up; I refuse to spend that much time reading through so much irrelevant and/or fabricated extraneous filler.
Eye-opening... historically fascinating....but............2005-11-27
The book has a great story to tell... but, I wish Ms. Carrell had written it more clearly..
I find myself jumping around, skipping boring, antiquated writing passages to get to the real historic juice of this story.
I know Ms. Carrell is a scholar, but I think even scholars can (and have) written passionate books without sinking in to intellectual drudgery.
This book plods along.. I want to know things.. and I have to wade through a lot of rhetoric to get there.
I will get to the end of this book.. but, I wish the author had written it without the 18th century drudgery. Wow, this book is hard to get through.. But, I am hungry for the info.. so, I'll carry on.
Interesting but..........2005-08-12
Overall, this book is rather interesting. However, there are some aspects of the book that I think are poor and I am surprised that others failed to mention them.
First, we'll start off with the negetive aspects. First and foremost, the book dips in and out from intimate nearness to the characters to cold, infomational-type explaining. I generally feel little toward the characters and am impatient with the inconsistancy. Carrell seems to have trouble with balancing fascinating, animated narrating and dry narration.
Also, her organization is lacking. The weaving of story and information of the era etc proves clumsy and rough. Though never really confusing, it is often inconvenient to the reader. I enjoy the historical, informational parts, I simply wish they were better integrated into the overall story.
The last negetive aspect is her akward grammer. I noticed an alarming amount of improper or incorrect sentences. It doesn't harm in the way of conveying the message, but it often stumbles the reader and forces them to re-read and ponder over the mistakes.
On to the positive aspects. This book is quite fascinating, to put it bluntly. I have read many medical novels or accounts on smallpox, but this is the first historical novel I have been lucky enough to read. It is rife with historical information (obviously), such as the royalty at the time, who died of smallpox that is of importance to the story, conditions at that time, fasion, etc. I am pleased at her attempt to relay the infomation in an interesting, colorful way by making it into a tale instead of a simply narration. It is also unique in that it presents two different individuals' history of smallpox.
Not only is it interesting, but hey, it provides photos. Pictures are always nice, and show smallpox in sickening detail. Various other pictures of people in that era, a map, etc also grace the center of the book. It allows the reader to visualize the people and disease realistically.
Overall, this book is interesting, sound, and informational. Her writing abilities leave something to be wanted, but the content overrules a bad rating. Had Carrell a better editor or had she been a better writer, this book would have been absolutely fantastic. Instead, I reget having to curse the book with less that a perfect score of three stars. I recommend it to anyone interested in 1700s' history or smallpox.
