Book Description

"I can think of no better way . . . to more efficiently and compactly review the ambitious, ingenious, irreverent, and sometimes exasperating art of our time."

-Art Journal Widely praised when it first appeared in 1995, Art Since 1940 tells the story of six decades of art in America and Europe through a series of in-depth biographical profiles of individual artists, astutely linked by illuminating discussions of the cultural influences on their work. Artnews hailed this lively volume as "a fascinating book" by "a superb critic and art historian." For this Second Edition, the author adds a new final chapter and extensively reworks the last quarter of the book to incorporate current thinking on the art of the last 20 years. 351 photographs, 246 in full color, 8 1/2 x 11" JONATHAN FINEBERG, winner of a Pulitzer Fellowship for critical writing and author of scores of articles, books, and catalogues on modern and contemporary art, is professor of art history at the University of Illinois. He lives in Urbana, Illinois.

5 out of 5 stars Illuminating Book.......2006-07-05

I used this book when I was a student and have referred to it multiple times since I graduated. Simply said, I love it. It presents the work of artists of the major movements in a clear way, without the jargon that is so common in other art books. I would recommend it for anyone interested in modern and contemporary art or anyone who has been to a museum of modern art and not understood what they are looking at. It is also a great affirmation to all of us working in creative fields that there are actual people producing this work, and Fineberg beautifully illuminates these personalities.

1 out of 5 stars Ewwww..............2006-03-23

Let me start off by saying that I'm not a fan of contemporary art. That being said, this book is incredibly difficult to read. For me, each sentence took several re-reads before I could get some type of clue as to what he was trying to say. I consider myself a good reader and this book was way out there with the uppity language. My husband would get a kick out of me reading sentences to him, just because they were impossible to understand. If you like this sort of thing, then you might like the book. I, however, did not like the book. I also did not like how they would describe a work of art in great detail, yet show you a totally different piece from that artist. It made if difficult to visually see what they were talking about. My professor did a much better job explaining the material covered in this book.

2 out of 5 stars No Photography!.......2004-10-01

By this book, 1940 marked the time that photography died and was replaced by vast amounts of performance art. Can you seriously present a "survey" of contemporary art without even acknowledging photography in any form?

2 out of 5 stars Bad Religion.......2004-05-15

This book by Finberg is professionally written, edited, and with lots of high quality color examples of the art being discussed. It covers a wide range of individual artists and art movements from the 1940's onward. The problem with book is that the range is not wide enough. Fienberg doesn't give equal treatment to art forms, and the visual arts even begin to take a backseat to performances and installations. It can be argued that new genres of art have emerged and should be discussed, but certainly not at the expense of other forms in a book presented as "art since the 1940's". There is a lot of art since the 1940's that isn't mentioned, though it should be, either because of significant cultural impact, or because of influence on artists that are discussed in the book. For example, there is no mention of animation of any kind, and relatively little coverage of realism, figurative work, design, comics, or advertising. Whether certain people like it or not, Ansel Adams, Walt Disney, Gottfried Helnwein, H.R. Giger, Dr. Suess, and Playboy magazine have had a major impact and more worldwide recognition than virtually all of the artists Fineberg discusses. While some may cast these off as unworthy of discussion in a book about "high art", knowledge of the evolution and integration of the "low arts" is essential to understand concepts of "pop art", "appropriation", "feminist art", and "post modernism". Fineberg's tone is celebratory with certain artists more than others, and makes odd choices on which artists to give the most attention to. The reason I titled this review "bad religion" is because this book is like a sermon about art by someone who is presenting their own doctrine, rather than telling the whole story. If you read this hoping to be educated about art, you are out of luck, unless your goal is to sound intellectual while sipping wine at the opening reception of the next retrospective show of minimalist art in Los Angeles, New York, or Chicago. Oh, it might also be useful if you are writing a paper for an art history class...

4 out of 5 stars excellent!.......2002-11-12

I purchased this book for my Contemporary Art class. It's chock full of great information, and lots of excellent quality samples of art throughout. Worth getting if you're interested in 'educating' yourself in the vernacular of art -- both modernism and contemporary.

Book Description

Featuring 50 seminal short films by key animators from around the world, this book discusses the work of early pioneers such as Oskar Fischinger and Jan Svankmajer as well as contemporary animators such as Larry Cuba, Tim Hope and Run Wrake. All of the films included are independently produced personal work. Most of the featured directors make a living in commercial animation but, freed from the constraints of a client brief, they use their short films to experiment with new ideas and techniques, many of which subsequently find their way into commercial applications. Labors of love, these films can take years to complete - each second of the film may consist of up to 25 frames of animation. Grouped according to four main themes, all forms of animation are covered, including 2D, 3D, Claymation, stop frame and web/Flash animation. Each project is accompanied by a 500-word review including comments from the director. Details of software and method along with the internet address of the production company are given in the technical credits.

3 out of 5 stars Quirky, cutting edge, and a little out there..........2005-01-25

First, to add a detail to something mentioned by another reviewer... Only DVDs with a Region 1 encoding will play in N. America, the "Unlimited" DVD is Region 2. Most consumer DVD players will not play the disk. However, all of the home computers I have tried the disk in play it just fine.

As for the book and DVD content, if you're looking for cute Pixar style, Toy Story type shorts this will disappoint you. If you're an animation enthusiast who likes to puzzle out how someone accomplished their work, there's plenty here for you to sink your teeth into. Mostly it's non-narrative works of moving non-representational art. Pretty cool if you're prepared for it before you press "play".

4 out of 5 stars Beware.......2004-04-21

Excellent book and great selection of films. But beware - the DVD is in PAL so unless you are playing it on a computer or have a DVD player that converts between NTSC/PAL, you won't be able to view it.

5 out of 5 stars A Visual Feast.......2004-02-08

With over 500 images, ANIMATION UNLIMITED is a visual feast. It's also a selected survey of some of the most significant works and artists of the past and present, including some fresh new talent. For many, the book will be a source of discovery, revelation, and inspiration. With a 2-hour DVD included, it's more of a curated exhibition of innovative works rather than an exhaustive history of the art form. It leaves you wanting more - but that's a good thing. For those active in, aware of, or curious about experimental or independent animation, ANIMATION UNLIMITED is affirmation that there is another world and history of animated images as exciting and valid any other more familiar or popular genre. Each of the concise artist profiles included in the book's four sections is a mini-profile of personal commitment, unique style, technical invention, creative drive, and visionary exploration. Pure abstraction and digital forms share attention and space with traditional handmade approaches, character animation, and narrative. ANIMATION UNLIMITED should, at the very least, serve as a primer to a rich and unique form of artistic inquiry and visual expression. It opens a door to animation of unlimited possibilities.

                  Book Description

This magnificently illustrated work offers a comprehensive view of the textiles and techniques of pre-Columbian Peru. An introduction discusses yarns, dyes, looms, and raw materials; the first of the two-part text examines weaves, and the second considers such nonwoven materials as braiding, felt, and embroidery.

                  1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-03-09

I thought that this book would focus on more on the symbolism of the textiles, but I was disapointed. The book was primarily dealing with the technical aspects of weaving a is a little outdated. The images were all in black and white so I could not get a good feel for the textiles.

5 out of 5 stars Must-have for Andean textile classification.......2007-02-07

We used this book and a few others for comparisons with a collection of ancient peruvian textiles at a museum I worked for several years ago. It was very useful and we referred to it frequently. It included all of the techniques used in the museum collection (consisting of 100's of fragments), and had plenty of pictures for examples. Of course the techniques aren't limited to Ancient Peru, but would apply to just about any textiles--(however the pictures are ancient peruvian). I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about ancient or modern textile techniques--a valuable resource in any museum with this type of collection.

This unabridged reproduction of a 1962 classic should be an essential edition to any textile collection: Textiles Of Ancient Peru And Their Techniques covers raw materials form Peru, weaves unique to the region, and techniques and materials used in nonwoven efforts. The result will please any avid textile artist.

An excellent reference from one of the foremost figure-drawing teachers, this classic manual provides artists with invaluable instructions on rendering the intricacies of the female figure. Bridgman's photographs and progressive drawings offer students and other beginning artists a suitable alternative to the use of costly live models. 32 black-and-white photographs; 37 drawings.

Actually I bought this book to my husband, he is a great illustrator and comics artist, he likes to buy this kind of book looking for new ways of drawing the human body... He got two or three new things from this one, what is a good sign... Well, no complains at all. It made us buy the "Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing from Life".

                                    3 out of 5 stars Bridman's "other" book.......2007-01-09

I have a deep and abiding admiration for Bridgman and all his work. This one however is a bit of a departure from his other works. It consists of photographs of models and scetches and studies of those photographs, with no text, explainations, or breakdowns of the information. While I have always found his books more useful for their illustrations than their text, the ad hoc feeling of this text left me at sea at first. However, it is useful if you want to look at his choices in how he simplifies the form, accentuates aspects of the body and, as always uses line weight. The only reason I rate this as mediocre is that there are very few drawings and the photo reproduction is not very good.

1 out of 5 stars This book should not have been republished without some revision.......2006-04-06

This book is nothing more than a few photographs from the 1950's, with a couple of very loose interpretations of the photos. There is very little detail to the sketches, and even less text. A book for the beginner this is not!

I guess for 7 bucks it's not too bad.

This book's intended target is mainly die-hard, enthusiastic, Bridgman completists- which pretty much describes me perfectly these days.
Since I actually revere Bridgman as a genius, I felt I almost *had* to get this book. In a way, I'm actually glad I did, at least for curiosity's sake(!). I now understand why this book has been out-of-print. Here's what it contains: 32 'average-quality' black & white photos- 26 of a nude female model; 4 of a nude male & female couple; and then 2 of a nude male model only. Many photos are cropped; some are completely full-figured. Two props are used: a large, shiny ball, and then a medium-sized piece of drapery. Bridgman's drawings are placed next to most photos- he usually depicts a part of the model in his famous, beautiful, and popular-classic style. The main problem here, as with many of Bridgman's works, is that the drawings are *mainly* sketchy & faded. Some of this is obviously due to this being originally printed in 1935. But here, some drawings are *shockingly* faded- almost completely useless(!). Even more odd, a few of these sketches are crystal clear, almost as if someone had re-traced them. Additionally, the quantity of drawings here is severely lacking. If it weren't for Bridgman's exceedingly popular name, it'd be a joke anyone would think this worth reprinting. Yet as a Bridgman fan, I *did* buy it- I just couldn't restrain my curiosity. And keep in mind: when I say the drawings here are *sketchy*, I mean they're even *more* so than in Bridgman's nearly-famous The Human Machine. For the highest quality Bridgman work, in my opinion at least, see The Book of a Hundred Hands, Constructive Anatomy, or Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing from Life. These 3 are *currently* my favorite Bridgman works.
THE BOTTOM LINE- ONLY THE MOST ENTHUSIASTIC BRIDGMAN COMPLETISTS NEED APPLY.

P.S. Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing from Life mentions *this* book as being included within its pages. However- I can't for the life of me find any of these drawings in that Complete Guide. If any *are* included, they certainly ain't easy to find!

Zaftig is a Yiddish word meaning ripe or luscious, and is commonly applied to curvaceous women. This book celebrates these women principally through its many reproductions of paintings, and through quotations from those who argue for the attractiveness of zaftig women. The arguments for feminine substance are arranged the matically, and include an attack on the cult of thinness, a defense of zaftig as a natural state, an exploration of eras such as the Victorian age, in which abundance was preferred, and an examination of subcultures in which heavy women rule, as on the opera stage.

Every comment is a fat woman looking for an excuse to justify her weight. In the olden days, food was scarce, so weight implied wealth, health, education, and status.

Today, food is plentiful, so obesity implies poor genes, poor education, laziness, or poverty (since healthier foods and diets tend to demand acccess to more expensive and complex recipes and ingredients).

Men are most attracted to the most women who offer the most benefit to the species at any given time. These days, its thin and athletic.

This book is a lie, a fabrication intended purely to perpetuate a fantasy and make a bunch of guilty and self-conscious fat people feel better with themselves.

It would be far healthier for you folks to simply acknowledge and accept reality: you are not desirable. Deal with it.

As an artist, I really appreciated this book. As a woman, I really appreciated this book. Curves are certainly more interesting to paint, draw or sculpt than angles and sharp lines. I bought this book because I decided to do some soul searching; to change my body image. I think that if a large woman studies these images enough, it will positively reshape her ideas of beauty and self worth. There is one section called "The Cult of Thinness." It is the most provocative chapter in the book, because after you look at the large woman, you'll be smacked in the face with a classic image of Venus, who really looks more like a man, really.

I will agree with reviewers that some people are thin and can't gain weight if they tried. However, they don't need a book. Media fetishes them and without fat acceptance movements, women will never be thin enough. I really feel sorry for any person, large or small, who has been through alienation or abuse because of appearance though.

Simple and tells it like it is- or how it was and how it could be. A work of Art in and of itself, it was a joy to see how the fuller figure can be viewed as something beautiful.

Beautifully bound, beautiful captions, and of course beautiful art work. It's hard to make a better purchase than this book, I'm glad I bought it instead of a wieght loss book!
My only quarrel is that the pieces mostly show full, plump women who don't fit the definition of "fat", and there are few black women, although the author seemed to be trying to focus on classical paintings, so it can only be expected since it is no doubt difficult to find classic works of art where the subject is a person of African descent.
But overall, I love this book and flip through it's pages often, it's a great mood lifter. Believe me, this is more likely to make you feel good about yourself than any diet pill claims to.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely, curvy women.......2000-12-19

This book has prints of paintings, drawings, etchings, sculpture, photographs, and advertisements featuring curvy women, some highlighting their bodies, and others their faces. The prints are beautiful, and some of the best art in the world is featured. I especially love Rembrandt's Bathsheba (from the Louvre) and Reni's Cleopatra (from the Pitti, I just saw it during my stay in Florence). I do wish that the pages with the prints had the titles, artists, and locations of the works right there. Instead, the titles and artists are listed in an index at the end, and there is no mention of where these artworks are, so that if one is interested in seeing a painting or sculpture in real life, one can pursue this. But on the plus side, the book is easy to read, and very enjoyable visually.

The book is divided up by topic (subject or artist), these being: Fashions in Body Type, The Cult of Thinness, The Goodness of Zaftig, Eve, Venus, Other Goddesses, Women as Symbols and Personifications, Cleopatra, Bathsheba, Hilda, Rembrandt van Rijn, Pieter Paul Rubens, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Boris Kustodiev, Aristide Maillol, Gaston Lchaise, Reginald Marsh, Pablo Picasso, An Opulent Age, Opera Divas, The Stage, On the Beach, Youthful Plumpness, Motherhood, Confidently Voluptuous, and Women's Bodies in Other Cultures.

As an aside, which is more just a comment than a criticism: with all of its pictures celebrating size, it must be admitted that most of them are of fair, white women; women that have pale skin and women of "other cultures" are fit into the last chapter, and they are mostly other cultures through the European gaze (Italian, French, Swiss). While St. Paige argues that most people and most cultures have preferred heavier women to thin ones, can we also not argue that many people prefer paler people too, as evidenced by the images in the book. But I'm glad that there is an attempt to put people of colour in the book.

The author puts a lot of emphasis on the idea that women are naturally curvy, and that thinness is freakish. While I agree that women tend toward curviness, not all women can be a size 20 either, just like not everyone can be a size 2. And the argument of "naturalness" doesn't sit well with me, as it has been used to justify many unpleasant things. I am not a zaftig woman, but I appreciate the beauty on these pages.

4 out of 5 stars A great book for Beginners........2003-02-22

I have noticed that the people that have reviewed this book did not give it very good reviews. But I think I know why. Well for one, one of the guys thought it was an art book, when it is obviously an instrutional book.

Before I go any further, I would like to emphasize that this is a BEGINNERS book. If you are looking for advanced techniques on photographing the nude, you may not like this book. As for me, I found it very helpful. As I am a beginner in nude photography.
The author does not go into much detail about each subject, but gives enough information to help out well. Plus, i find that part of the fun of photography is exploring, and we dont want all the fun spelled out for us.

The author goes step by step through the different kinds of nude photography. I have to say that the models are not very attractive, but that is a part of the beauty of photography. We are not looking to make playboy models here. For me, I am into black and white, so I was able to skip through much of the book to the parts where I was interested in. I also prefer real sunlight rather than artifitial light. This was an area of the book that helped me a lot. You are shown different views of models and how the light effects them. Also, the diffence in sunlight and lamp light. And trust me, there is a very big difference.

All and all, this book was a good buy for me. I am glad that I purchased it. I dont plan to read it and follow it as a photography bible, but there are some helpful tips that are nice.
Again, I will say that this book may not be for experienced photographers and is not an art book. But to help all of us amatuers out and to show us what we need to know.

3 out of 5 stars not an art book.......2000-12-30

this book is not a book of art to look at, rather it is more of an instructional book, how to photograph nudes. though i don't think that these principles apply just to nudes, you could use them on any portriature. hedgecoe really has the basics down. the problem with the book, why i only gave it a three, is that the examples he uses are not very good pictures. i've never seen any of his other work, so i don't know what kind of photographer he is, but my understanding is that he can create better images that was shown in this book (in fact, many of the pictures look like leftovers from his work done in the late 70s early 80s). also, many of the techniques he describes are ones any photographer should know about, or at least any photographer who isn't just starting out. and a beginning photographer shouldn't try to take on nudes until they have a little experience under their belt. the final problem with the book is hedgecoe's apparent surprise at using computer imaging. it almost feels like he has just discovered the digital camera and photoshop.

it's not a horrible book, but i wouldn't recommend it to anyone who isn't a beginner.

                                    2 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......1999-10-04

What a disappointment. This book contains very little that specifically relates to nude photography and nothing about glamor. It's a mediocre photo book. Most of the pics aren't even very good. This book doesn't come close to matching the quality of the author's other books I've seen.

                                      Book Description

The twelve essays in this book employ a wide range of visual material from varying periods in history to explore different attitudes to and representations of the human body. Each essay serves to analyse how visual representations of the body work metaphorically and systematically to define and reinforce beliefs and social practices. Many of the essays focus on a single painting, photograph, or other object to examine the wider implications of the image of the body and the body as image. An impressive range of methods and approaches is brought to bear, serving to demonstrate the intellectual vigour and breadth of the subject of the body in art, and the richness of the material with which it can be studied.
