Book Description
Artists have always known intuitively what science is just beginning to discover: that creating a visual image through any medium can produce physical and emotional benefits for both the creator as well as those who view it. Most important, you don't need to think of yourself as an artist or even believe you have any "talent" to tap into the healing powers of art.
In this remarkable testament to the power of creativity, Barbara Ganim shows step-by-step how to use art to heal body, mind, and spirit. By using guided meditation and artistic techniques, you can gain insight and clarity into depression, anxiety, rage, and even illnesses, including cancer, arthritis, and AIDS.
At once inspirational and instructive,
Art and Healing will teach you how to connect with negative, painful, and even repressed emotions, and then express them through drawing, painting, sculpture, or collage. Releasing these feelings through the creative process frees up the immune system and clears the mind, allowing the body to fight off disease and begin to heal emotional wounds. Filled with actual stories from those who have triumphed over adversity and with more than a hundred different pieces of artwork created using this groundbreaking method,
Art and Healing is sure to provide the tools needed for healing body and spirit.

Excellent Interactive Book.......2005-03-16
This is a very good book to help anyone learn about expressive arts and to use them for healing of self or for others. Simple and yet deep at the same time. Ganim takes us on a jouney and show us how to approach our emotions through the art work. The examples of visual pieces are just wonderful.
Excellent for individual work, group therapy, and most definitely children. This book is a very fast read and you may find yourself flying a little to fast through the pages...but I would have to say this is a worthy book to any clinician or client who want to gain understanding for themselves and others.
"art therapy" without the stigma.......2004-12-21
As an artist and teacher who has personally experienced the powerful healing benefits of the creative act, I applaud this book! I believe it can serve many who would not otherwise seek out an art therapist or art therapy texts. Don't dismiss it as "New age hogwash" until you try it yourself -- the proof is in getting those creative juices going and seeing where they take you. You can change and learn in ways that will amaze you --- and the best part is that YOUR creative spirit will show you the way, with a little help from guidebooks such as this.
Detailed yet readable, inspirational and helpful.......2001-06-19
Ms. Ganim's wealth of experience, fluency in art, and intuitive understanding of the human experience comes through in this book. Case studies and excellent color plates help to put life into the points and exercises she gives. There is a tendency to hyperbole and sometimes what seems too good to be true may be just that. But I concede that tendency to anyone who is enthusiastic about their work. This book is made to be used. The exercises are doable and procede in a logical, stepwise fashion. No one needs to be an artist to benefit from these exercises. Ms. Ganim's definition of healing as opposed to cure puts this work in perspective and gives it validity. I would highly recommend it to anyone seriously looking to experience healing in mind, body, and spirit.
really disappointing.......2001-05-23
As a survivor of serious illness, I was really disappointed by the message of this book that art making would help to reveal the hidden metaphors of illness. Ideas such as cancer results from emotional repression of anger and heart disease is the lack of ability to love are insulting, frankly, to people who have serious medical conditions. The information in this book, while presented in an easy-to-read format, is simplistic in its tone and content. The author spends more time talking about herself and her workshops than giving the reader some real guidance on art making for healing. Illustrations are beautiful, but the content was less than satisfying
Wonderful guidebook for non-therapists!.......2000-01-05
This is a great book for lay people. Many books of this type are too academic, densely written or boring to the average non-professional reader who might be interested in this topic. The writer makes the concept so easy to understand. It's filled with examples of interesting (and often beautiful) art work with words and stories by the creators. Very powerful to have the individuals who themselves have gone through life-threatening illnesses and traumatic situations talk about the healing power of art. Particularly fascinating to see examples of how art can be used globally and with the environment. Kudos to the all the people who shared so honestly their intimate stories and viewpoints, and congratulations to the author for compiling such a compelling body of work.

My neighboors all raved about my pumpkins thanks to this book.......2007-02-12
I got this book for halloween this year. Read through it in a short sitting, and had a clear view of how to create releaf style pumpkin sculptures in no time.
I had some background many years ago in highschool pottery classes doing sculture, and the techniques detailed in this book easily recapped each of the basics and then advanced into the more skilled techniques.
I highly recommend this for anyone with little to no sculpture background.
The draw backs I found with this book are that they focus heavily on how to accomplish the effects with typical knife. Then they transition in to using more specific tools. The issue being that they spend far less time detailing the technique with the specific/advanced tools, it would have been better if they keep the same level of tenique details for the advanced tools. Also on the subject of advanced tools, the author provide teh list of tools he uses(which have been built over many years specializing in the spaced). There is very little time spent on talking about what tools are used or suggestions of locations to get ahold of them. I have found that getting ahold of tools that fit the task have been hard to find and better descriptions or sources would be extremely helpful.
Extreme pumpkin carving.......2005-10-11
Very inspiring! Great step-by-step photos to get you started. The photos make it look so easy I can't wait to try it!
Super carving book.......2004-11-01
This is the best book I've seen on carving pumpkin. There are patterns for everything from scary to comical faces. Carving is done only with knives or for those carvers with tools, good directions are available for a really terrific creation. I would not recommend unsupervised children doing this kind of carving, however. The tools must be very sharp.
Something for both beginners and advanced carvers..........2004-10-10
I had a tough time deciding on how many stars for this book. I really like the book but I was just a teensy bit disapointed. My reasons may be a little bit unfair but I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.
They walk you thru step-by-step how to carve one pattern with nothing but a carving knife and another pattern step-by-step with how to carve with carving tools. The photos on this part are great and close-up in color. For the pumpkin carved only with the knife they used 86 pictures! For the pumpkin done with carving tools they showed 40 (because it's faster and easier to use carving tools hence it took fewer pics). This part is very much for the beginner which is exactly what I needed. Under each photo (which are about 4 to a page) they tell you what tool to use and explain what is happening in the photo. This part is amazing, they did not skip on the photos here!
I am slightly disapointed however, because they only show two pumpkin patterns step-by-step and I admit I am greedy and would have liked more.
The other 18 pumpkins they give shaded line patterns for and a color photo of each finished pumpkin. Depending on how dark the shading is on the drawing is how deep to carve that feature. This will no doubt not bother those more advanced at carving than myself but it does intimidate me.
This book is well worth the price just for the two step-by-step pumpkins they did. I will learn a lot and maybe by the time I do a couple I will feel comfortable tackling the others on my own.

Customer Reviews:
Great ideas, great technique info.......2003-11-21
I really enjoyed this book, particularly for the ideas. There are so many different "personalities" of pumpkin faces represented, in addition to some abstract ones. I "freelance" my pumpkins and it was really helpful to see the specific cuts to create a particular effect. The patterns/templates coupled with the full-color images (with candles glowing inside) really helped me understand how to use relief more effectively to create the look I want.
Also includes patterns for 5 different melon bowls for special occasions.
My favorite is "Masque" which is simple, abstract, with flame like openings.
Also of note: Skull & Crossbones, Frankenstein, Crescent Moon, Gypsy, Batty Wings, Lion, Wildcat, and Wolf Man.
Highly recommended!
Halloween fun.......2002-10-19
Palmer is a high school art teacher and he uses that experience to teach people how to carve some spectacular pumpkins in this book. Each of the pumpkin designs has a template you can cut out to use for the actual pumpkin carving, which makes it very easy to do, since you don't need a lot of artistic or pumpkin-carving talent to make it work. He also includes technical details on the procedures, such as the necessity of occasionally using a drill to get the smaller, more precise holes and cut- outs.
There are several dozen designs, many of them the traditional scary or smiling pumpkin faces, but others include a nicely done Thanksgiving turkey and, oddly enough, a fish. While I will probably never try any of these designs out myself, this looks like a good book to learn from if you want to get adventurous yourself, or if you've just always had the urge to go at a pumpkin with a rotary drill and a carving knife.

Book Description
Pumpkins are supposed to be scary!
Based on his popular and addictive website ExtremePumpkins.com, Tom Nardone has created a full-color guide to pumpkin carving that's truly frightening. Featuring the website's signature Puking Pumpkin, and spanning everything from Drowning Pumpkin, Crime Scene Pumpkin, and Cannibal Pumpkin to Electrocuted Pumpkin and other never-before-seen designs, this gleefully gory guide is nothing short of a manifesto to take back Halloween from the cheerful, the cutesy, and the parent-sanctioned. For the egg-throwing, toilet tissue-streaming, window-soaping teenager in all of us, finally- a whole new way to celebrate October 31.

dude....this book is totally freakin' awesome.......2007-09-10
Not only has this book enabled me to hold onto my position as the neighborhood maniac, it has given me new insight on how to carve pumpkins more efficiently, spookily, and with greater ease. Mr. Nardone is quite the cut up, and this book made me chuckle unendingly. The directions are simple, the layout is handy, and I find the photographs both detailed and quite artistic.
p.s. This book is also quite inexpensive, so buying multiples of it doesn't pinch my pocketbook! Yowza!
