Very Fun Read.......2007-08-08

This is a great companion book to The Bonfire of the Vanities. I have been a longtime fan of Dunne's writing for Vanity Fair, but this was the first piece of fiction by him that I have read, and I wasn't disappointed. This book is fun, gossipy, and a real page-turner. Is it important literature? No. But who cares? If you like books about High Society or the New York social scene, this one's for you.

Tortured writing, satisfying story.......2007-04-30

No one has commented so far on the actual writing in this book--it's frequently awful and very inconsistent. Convoluted tortured sentences full of clumsy clauses. Certain sentences I had to re-read several times even to understand who the pronouns referred to. I even saw spelling mistakes.

Yet, at other points, Dunne writes beautifully. Did anyone edit this book?

The story is a virtual retread of The Two Mrs. Grenvilles, but definitely fun in a cheesy way...and the way the book evokes the later 80s is, perhaps, its strongest recommendation. Enjoyed it, but wish it had been properly edited.

I always enjoy Domenick Dunne. I had heard of this book as it is an older one but had never gotten around to reading it before. I was not disappointed!! Always a surprise twist. Dunne is a fascinating writer.

The skewed values of the rich.......2005-07-17

This book is a gossipy, fascinating, fictional look at the wealthy and their values. Of course, it's all about money and power, and the old guard having to put up with social interaction with the nouveau riche whose social skills have not quite caught up with their financial well-being. Central to the plot are Elias and Ruby Renthal whose somewhat shady backgrounds at first scandalize the established social gentry, but who eventually become social scions by virtue of their lavish parties and improved manners. Woven among the phony, materialistic values are a few characters who show refreshingly genuine emotions of love and selflessness. This is an interesting study of a group of people who indeed have more money than sense.

Entertaining and slick.......2004-06-22

I loved this book- there are many, many characters and yet the book flows smoothly and is entertaining and satisfying from beginning to end. I've read this book three times in the last ten years and each time, I feel like I'm revisiting old friends.

I have volunteered at a battered woman's shelter and was quite amazed to learn that this horrendous crime has no socio-economics boundaries. I believe that this particular book should be required reading for everyone who is involved in Domestic Violence Prevention.

A different kind of power to deal with.......2004-10-07

I have lived domestic violence in the past and for many years,I have worked with all types of abusers and victims from all socioeconomic backgrounds, so my perpective is a bit broader. I remember when this book first came out, we even attended an 'upscale violence' training as a result of this book, some were scoffing at the idea of upscale violence. The abusive behaviors and victim coping strategies are almost identical across all socioeconomic spectors, however there are two things that stand out in my experience that make this book a needed tool: the power difference. All abusers wield power over victims: Physical force, emotional blackmail, threats, finances and resources..etc...but the amount of power held by the abuser and the lack of power held by the victim are both crucial elements to consider. In a poor household, if the woman flees in the middle of the night with nothing but the clothes on her back, it is extremely difficult for her because she has nothing, no resources. Society has falsely assumed that rich women should be able to leave easily because they have so much 'power', so many resources.....not necessarily so when the abuser is both powerful and ruthless...he can find you anyplace you go, he can hire attorneys and fight endlessly to take your children away, to discredit you, and he can destroy your career if you have one......so the assumption that a rich woman can easily end her abuse and just walk away is not accurate. Some rich and powerful abusers, resort to murder too. The poor woman is limited by her lack of power, so is the rich woman, but in a different way. I appreciate the fact that the book deals with the social stigma associated with the affluent revealing that 'all is not well' in their houses, in fact, it may be quite savage and barbaric within their home. One of the worst DV(domestic violence) murders was recorded via a photo (media): a very rich and powerful, well respected doctor killed his wife by burning her alive in the living room of their mansion. And we all remember the O.J. Simpson case. Upscale violence is alive and well, scaring generations of children who appear to 'have it all'....all except a safe home.

This book came into my life exactly when I needed it! Susan Weitzman's discussion of the abuse in up-scale marriages was exactly what I needed to help me cope and understand what was happening in my divorce to a multimillionaire. After 16 years of abuse, my decision to leave my husband was only the beginning of a nightmare. His threats to ruin me, take our child, destroy my life, were combined with illegal wiretapping of my computer and legal maneuvering to ensure I could not leave. Added to this were multiple mistresses and hidden bank accounts. Susan's book is excellent reading for anyone going through a divorce to a wealthy emotional/physically abusive man. It should be required reading for divorce lawyers and judges.

Unfortunately, I knew exactly who Dr.Weitzman was describing when she described the 'upscale' couple hiding a terrible secret.

This book is important to women who have escaped from an abusive relationship or are considering an escape. From practical advice to checklists of traits of an abusive man (denial in these situations is very, very strong - seeing the evidence before your eyes brings you closer to the truth), to the case histories, the book brings home the reality of an abusive relationship.

Religion Doesn't Matter.......2005-03-02

In the begining, sophomore, Dinah Adler, gets asked by Geoff Ruggles, a junior quarterback, to help with decorating for the all-school dance. At first, Dinah says no but after a while she finally gives in. Dinah finds out that Geoff likes her a lot and wants to date her. Dinah tells her mother and grandmother and they do not like the idea of Dinah, a Jew, to go out with Geoff, a Catholic. In the middle of the book, Dinah's brother is having his bar mitzvah and Geoff wants to go. But, Dinah's mother and grandmother refuse because of his religion. Then, Dinah and Geoff have an argument because Geoff thinks that it shouldn't matter what religion he is, but Dinah thinks that her mother and grandmother are doing it because they love her and don't want her "to start something she can't finish." In the ending, Geoff's friends go missing and Dinah is worried about them. So, Dinah's freshman neighbor, Edna, calls Geoff and tells him that Dinah wants to help him find his friends. It takes Dinah and Geoff a while, but they find Geoff's friends. Dinah's grandmother, who works at a shelter, helps Geoff's friends on what to do next and what to tell their parents. The next day, Dinah's mother allows Geoff to go to her brother's bar mitzvah because she realized what a good person Geoff is.

Fools in love.......2003-03-12

This book is mainly about this 1 girl and she thinks that she isn't cool at all! But then she changes her whole out fit just for other people to like her! She thinks that she will never get a boyfriend, but finally she gets 1! When she thinks that she is finally so cool her mom doesn't like who she is going out with, because he isn't the same religion as her she is Jewish and he isn't! They end up going out any ways she didn't care what her mom said and you will find out the rest when u read it. I don't think that u should read this because this book was really boring but in some parts it was good!

People like Us

This book was about a Jewish girl and her family. Her over coming the pains that she went through in high school, and why her grandparents and mother don't like inter-religion relationships.
When Sarah would go to school every morning, she would always wait to get to her art class because her crush was in that class with her! One day he went up to her and asked if she would like to help with a school project that he was in charge of. She said yes, after thinking about the whole thing for more than three days. They became very good friends and he started to get that little high school crush on her too! He asked her if she would like to go bowling with him and some guys that Friday she went home told her mom and they both were thrilled. After her grandparents heard everything, they asked what religion he was. She didn't know and she told them that but she also knew that he wasn't Jewish. Her mom didn't like the idea of going out with someone that's not the same religion as they were. They didn't want her to start something she couldn't finish.
Overall I did like the book because it brought something in to my life that I would other wise not even think about. It's sad to see someone that may be head over heals for someone else, and they couldn't even get started. I would recommend this book to everyone! I love it!

The sublime visions of Surrealist master Rena Magritte often began in a viewfinder. In this major study, the first of its kind, noted photography critic, author, and Magritte scholar Patrick Roegiers draws eye-opening connections between the artist's enduring paintings and his use of the emerging medium of photography, which he used as a hobby, as well as a serious component of his painting, and as an art in itself. Examining more than 200 previously unpublished photographs from Magritte's personal collection, Roegiers finds both important source material and illuminating biographical revelations. We see here pictures of friends--including the Belgian Surrealists Scutenaire, Nouga, and Mesens--and acquaintances, whom Magritte sometimes shot in stage-managed tableaux. We glimpse his family and especially his wife, muse, and model Georgette, posing whimsically and earnestly, as they decamp for Paris in 1927 and return to Brussels three years later. And perhaps most vitally important to understanding Magritte's work, his self-portraiture through photography provides crucial insight into the creation of his bowler-hatted icon and paintings such as La Clairvoyance, from 1936. A photograph of this last work shows the artist at the easel of the famous painting of himself painting a bird. Later in life, as Magritte's fame grew, he himself was also a subject of other photographers' pictures, including photographs by Duane Michals on Magritte's first trip to the United States in 1965 and by Adelaide de Menil in Texas, in which the artist amusingly trades his bowler for a Stetson. This clear-eyed, all-encompassing look at what Magritte saw through the camera, and what he did in front of it, adds substantially to our appreciation of the artist who gave us the eye of "Le Faux Miroir."

This book illustrates the reader through Magritte's life while giving background to the works. I read this book for fun and subsequently decided to study Magritte in school. It discusses surrealism as a whole as well as the historical context of Magritte's work. This book got me hooked on Magritte!!
